This dam in the desert holds back an insane amount of water! Every year this river below gets a good release which releases even more fish! This was my first time exploring this dam spillway thing.
We set out to catch whatever we could, although our goal was 3 species of fish. Here in AZ this is one of the only active dams you can fish legally. Desert fishing can be awesome, but the lack of access places can be tricky.
We did manage some fish here in this spillway, but I will be back in the future for some more Arizona dam fishing.

For what it's worth, if you can find it, mackerel is a better bait. Especially with the skin on. The skin helps it stay on the hook. I've used this for decades and it's amazing bait. Chicken livers are fine, but even with the thread they don't stay on the hook as well as mackerel. FYI - been fishing AZ since I was 5yr old. Landed 30-50lbs catfish out of the upper salt. Mackerel or water dogs or just plain old worms.
I have used both actually. I have never had an issue with liver stayinng on using magic thread. I think both baits are a bit different so id bring both and just see if the fish are biting for fish, or liver. Upper salt id love to fish one day its just kinda far
Awww, first a little Cawp and then a little kittenfish, how cute 😉
Beautiful place to fish. At least you got out and had some luck. Keep those videos rolling.
True that! Thank you I sure will
It's ok Mark, we've all fallen into the water trying to land a trophy Carp!😂
Hahahaha hey it happens
Awesome stuff! Great scenery
You know it bro 🔥
Bro your videos are great keep it up always looking for the next one, be safe 👊🏼
Thanks man 🙏🏼 trying my best!
How deep you think it is ?
Awesome video, hopefully you get to explore it more. Been fishing there all my life and never disappoints.
Heck yea man next time I want to, seems like a spot with a ton of potential
@@TheFishinMagician20 I recommend a kayak. Me and my girl went last summer and got 7 + large mouths. Can’t wait to make a trip again
This place looks amazing!
So dope man
You can’t complain, better than a good at work. You have one of the best fishing videos out there. You just got a subscriber. I didn’t think Arizona would have that much fishing spots. I thought mostly desert out there and by the way you have a nice dog. Peace and safe to you out there fishing.
true that! Thank you for that support! It helps a ton
Can't beat the scenery?? To each their own, I suppose.
Was Sup! Them Sticks and Logs can be tricky! Ay man you didn't loose your drink tho... I mean fish! Haha
Hahaha yea man they look sturdy sometimes but are the complete opposite 😂
Next time take yourself some 9 or 10 sized circle hooks, and use that baby carp as bait for some flatty’s 😉
Nice country. Think I heard a cactus knock and a whoop in the background. You’re getting closer.😂😂
😂😂 it WILL happen
When I was a kid, one of my uncles worked for the Salt River Project. He lived at Canyon Lake dam, so I had access to fishing off the front of the dam and below it. If the turbines were going, I’d catch lots of trout. If they were off, it was monster carp fishing with top water baits. I caught some huge ones. Good times.
So awesome
Sick Fishing spot dude🔥🔥
I appreciate it! When the water starts flowing here it’ll be even better
@@TheFishinMagician20 Oh yeah. That should be great.
Thanks brother! I’ve been dying to get out to the verde and cf point but my trucks got a busted strut and tires are damn near bald. Saving money up for this summer man. Hope to see you out one day and shake hands. Keep fishing bro! Go here again in the summer you’ll see hundreds of baby carp along the shoreline and man are they fun to catch!
Heck yea man that road is rough! That’s awesome I’ll be out there again
Joann's has that elastic thread as well. Awesome video man. I am jealous you get to go so often
Good tip 🔥thank you. It’s probably not as often as you think, some weeks 3-4 times, some weeks 1 maybe 2 times
@TheFishinMagician20 Hahahaa. That's pretty much what I was thinking lol. Previous to being married, my fishing exploits were much more prolific. My college studies actually suffered
awesome brother, i prefer dams and small streams compared to big lakes or oceans, it feels more cozy when its not too open
Agreed on that! Wish we had more here that were fishable
Very cool spot 😎
My man Mike thank you
I am a fellow Arizona fisher and you should definitely go to the Surprise lake and fish for trout or catfish. It has bass and tilapia as well. I also know a golf course pond spot and a neighborhood pond spot if your curious about those as well? Video ideas....
So many people at surprise tho 😅 I like east valley ponds more. Always down to try any new golf course ponds
@@TheFishinMagician20 man I agree so much, it's pretty overfished for catfish, but.....fishing for bass and carp there on the other hand is under fished. I commented on your most recent video asking something btw bro.
@@TheFishinMagician20 and about the golf course pond, I will gladly tell you where it is, but I don't want these other people to know where it is, because it's a nice low-key spot and I don't want it to become overfished
Love that place
Same 🔥🔥🔥
It was my first time! Scenery back there is awesome and quiet. I’ll be back 🙏🏼
We’re is it
@@martiros3677horseshoe lake
I fished that area last year and it was amazing going back in march
Awesome, yea I bet you hit it when there was water flowing. Was hoping it would be like that for me but nope. Maybe they’ll spill some out come March
Hi magician, if you are looking for some catfish, you should try with chicken's hearth, It works better than liver sometimes, greetings from Durango, México, ah, i really liked your videos
thanks for the tip! Mexico in the hoouse!
Nice!!! Garlic chicken livers does not make you smell like Olive Garden 🤭 LOL!
Hora! Breadsticks
I think Olive Garden does indeed have garlic chicken livers. Look for their specials on Saturday nights. $0.99 all you can eat.
That particular spot is great for huge flathead...especially at night. Friend of mine pulled a 32 pounder out of there last fall.
So I’ve heard. I wanna try that next
@@TheFishinMagician20 I think they’re still a little lethargic and harder to catch right now but give it a month and It’ll be prime time!
@@alexanderzatusevschi4309 that’s what I’m thinking! When that water starts moving over there again I think that and the warmer weather gunnu have them feeding
@@TheFishinMagician20 yep, I tried Bartlett this past weekend and it was definitely tough, only caught one 5 pounder a the spot I usually catch multiple 20+ pounders.
Great video usually whatever species of fish are in the lake are also below the dam
Thanks! Yea I was hoping for a bit of everything but the lake above has been drained before so fishing hasn’t been the same since the.
I used to use liver until I moved back to Wisconsin and started using cutbait bluegill again like I used to. My record channel catfish in Denver were caught after a year where we had high water and I think some catfished got washed out of a reservoir because I tried for years afterwards and just caught trout and carp in the Platte River which is why I ended up as a carp fisherman
Awesome I really do like both. Definitely times where one outshines the other
On the other side of the dam there are some huge bass that are pretty easy to catch with a spinner or a crankbait.
Oh really? Will have to give that a try next time. Thanks for the tip!
At least there is still some fish there! The fishing used to be amazing there for almost everything. Once they started fully draining horseshoe and people took sein nets across the whole thing... it hasn't been the same haha you can still catch good fish the farther down river you go. Much harder to get to though
That’s what I keep hearing ! Dang sein nets is insane. That sucks. I’ve heard about further down but I took a look at the trails and said ehhhh maybe after a lift 😅
@@TheFishinMagician20 yep haha I have taken my jeep way down. Definitely need a lift in certain spots. I think you can go farther than you think though
Hey it’s rip Fletching let’s get this trip planned out
It would be cool if in a video you can show the "clicker" feature that you use for a lot of your catches. I think some reels are baitfeeding reels and that's what you use too? Either way would be cool to see it explained Great video, peak AZ fishing 👍
I will keep that in mind next time! It’s tricky a lot of things are just second nature to me, so I forget some people don’t know.
I would appreciate it if you would give us the locations you are fishing from!! I lived in Sierra Vista for 25 yrs I don't recognize this dam or the canals you fish from!! Thanx!!
I’d love to go fish with you here in AZ and take you some cool places in Oregon.
Oregon is a bit far for me to travel haha. I’ll be around spring and summer fishing here
Haven't fished there in years. Gets busy in the summer on the weekends.
Oh I bet it does. That road getting in sure is rough tho
Hmmmm…. Why don’t fishermen ever tell spots ? because people have no RESPECT for the area. No reason you can’t bring it out if you brought it in !!!
Agreed it’s insane
Absolutely right my friend... I have a few honey holes I won't ever tell about for that exact reason
@@copperstaterocketguy1640 yessir never tell
I have no idea why but shrimp seems to work just about everywhere for catfish
Me too! .....mmmmm shrimp
What reels do you use?! Whats that spinning real with the clicker?
okuma ceymar is what i use!
@@TheFishinMagician20 Awesome THANKS!!!!
Your so rite my friend some fisherman have havee no respect for the invirament first time viewing your video are kool good content 👌
It’s crazy man, can’t consider yourself an angler when people do that. Thanks for the support!
Used the carp as cut bait for giant catfish! It work 💯 if there is catfish there 😅
Yea I used to use it for big blue cats in VA a little different out here tho
I love catching carp.
They are underrated 🔥
We’ve landed 50 lb .+ flatheads out there good luck use blue gill and live carp
What Damis that ?
That used to be the best place to fish back in the day alot of flatheads
I bet it was awesome. I can see why it’s gone downhill tho
I carry a 5gal bucket with me, always filling it up at spots.
Good call
I used to fish that spot a long time ago.
Heard it’s changed a ton
Which dam is this?🤔
I i'm a Big fan
I appreciate yah 🙏🏼
Hey broo I have a lil mission for ya 😂 Well you know where the salt River is where you’ve gone trout fishing When you walk down (the direction the current is going and pass the bridge ) The water makes that left turn then maybe 50-100 yards later the water reallly settles down and is a nice spot for carp There’s like hundreds of em and reallly big ones tooo I went and didn’t have any luck catching em and was wondering if you’d make a video trying to catch those guys Since they’re pressured quite a bit I was having a hard time getting em to bite lol
Hmmmm may have to give it a look
Is this behind Bartlett?
Horseshoe reservoir
It is 75 ft deep only at the mouth and down ❤been there since I was a kid
I still can't believe people go somewhere to have a good time but can't pick up after them selfs so that other people can go there later to have a good time there also. It makes no sense. I guess we will have to pick up after others. Be blessed. My friend.
Yup it unfortunately will never end
Crazy,i fish carp with boilies and where i'm, they don't eat like these
greetings friend, good video, I would like to fish with you and make a good video, blessings
Yo what up! Maybe this summer 🔥
I was there 3 days ago
Any luck?
Where is this spot brother?
Catfish point
Where is this?
It’s either Barlett or Horseshoe.
Where is this
Catfish point
Soak it overnight in minced garlic & a lil pro cure catfish cocktail or bloody tuna oil and they will demolish that liver 💪
I have done that before! Man it’s been a while since I used pro cure 😅
The common carp are really good eating IF YOU KNOW HOW TO CLEANUM
I feel like people say this for every fish 😂
Pescado de oro
Next time bring some shade and scuba gear
You can just hook it like 3 4 times
That’s bait bro 😂
lol I agree
Did the last carp eat chicken liver?
Nah Bread
@@TheFishinMagician20 that looks like the perfect location to do feeder fishing style meaning a small method feeder for carp. Look up on KZhead “feeder fishing” they typically target smaller carp and use a thin but long rod 9-12 feet and maybe a single piece of corn on a hook or a banded pellet and a small method feeder. 8lb test line works well. In my opinion it would be really fun to fish that style here ❤️
First 🎉❤❤
Dubssss
Im in Oregon n have many lakes full of carp. I use corn treated with cokanie seasoning. Carp candy here in the PNW.
I’m give u a secret bro put that first carp on. A big rod your gonna be surprised ps only at the mouth ok
No net again..😂 thanks for picking up peoples trash
I don’t understand why people waste their time on carp! Garbage fish!
you have ads you get thumbs down every time
Llllloooooooooollll
What up Bro?? Nice spot man. It's always fun to catch anything! Ridiculous how people continue to dump off their fishing lines on shore😡 Really?? Just can't shove it in the pocket, Or place it under the hat? Crazy !! Thanks foe the video Bro. Bless.
Yo! Oh yea it’s awesome here. Unfortunately people treat it like garbage tho
U can walk right in the middle of the dam it’s Koo
That’s my secret spot ❤
I’m sorry to say your spot didn’t look so secret when I was down there 😅
@@TheFishinMagician20 wait till June flathead city dept by mouth of dam drops down 75 feet trust big ones in there
Unleash your dog...that fn leash could get caught up on anything and hinder the doggos options.
Negative, glass, used hooks, endless fishing line, and rattlesnakes are just some of the hazards here
it take a real sorry POS to leave fishing line around, or any trash for that matter, it will get a fishing hole posted and ruin it for everyone. if you can pack stuff in, you can pack it out
