Did you know that South Korea is facing the worst labor market crisis since the Asian financial crisis in 1997? To find out how bad the situation is, we asked the top 1% college students from South Korea. Do they have anything to worry about? What does it mean for the rest if they themselves are struggling to find jobs? Let’s find out.
0:00 - Intro
1:00 - How prestigious is SNU?
2:36 - How hard did you study to get in?
4:16 - How do people react when they find out you go to SNU?
8:00 - Are you concerned about getting a job?
10:10 - Why did it become so difficult to find jobs?
13:07 - Is it worth going to college in 2021 in Korea?
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Korean population.

  • Now AsianBoss needs to do an interview with the kids ON THE OTHER SIDE. Aka the ones WITHOUT college degrees, and high test results etc. It would be very interesting to hear their side of the story, and how life is treating them in Korea. Their struggles, prejudices, opportunities, etc. Cause I'm pretty sure that number is higher and reflects the young population and their current obstacles, a lot better. Edit: Thank you guys for all the love! Let's hope AsianBoss sees this!🙏

The fact that I failed to pass the interview phase pushed me down, and I was so ashamed of myself for a while. Now I am satisfied with my life and living happily, but it feels strange to watch the video recalling few months ago. How miserable was it that my life existed for college entrance... Isn't it ridiculous?

    • Yeah that is a good mindset to have! Life is not only about the best university or going to SKY, sometimes the pressure just isn't worth it. For some, they may crack under pressure and have mental health issues relating to stress for the rest of their life. I would rather go to a mid-tier university than excessively overwork myself by cramming for tests and writing a thousand essays in 3-4 years. In reality it is just a small part of your life, things like family and friends can make you a more rounded out person than just 'studying all day'. Also, your English is very good! Must be from all that English studying you do... haha

    • @@WolfTitan99 thx :) Haha... That's right. Satisfaction is a good thing. I think, I didn't know how to satisfy for my life, myself. I passed for two universities' exam of SKY. I hadn't known that was enough for me. It's enough. I studied 13 hours a day for 3 years. Well, I used a translator a little bit in the first comment. I can't use English well... Thank you for your compliments. In this comment, there is MY English for telling my opinion about Korean education. Can you read it and make a comment, please? There is no time for any writing in most of Korean school curriculum. Only reading. That's why a lot of Korean people are good at reading, not speaking. Schools don't teach us such difficult things to make an exam. This is one of most harmful effects on the country. We can't learn what we really want to learn, how to think, debate, and make an creative and critical thinking. For example. I love learn languages, especially Russian :) (I'm studying in Department of RLL.) Nowadays I'm learning Latin language. And also I like to read Roman and Greek classics, such as Odyssey, De oficiis, etc. But Korean schools don't like students like me. They just want such a machine that can pass every exam they have made. There is no Russian and Latin languages in the regular curriculum. Well, we learn Korean classics. But they impose us to memorize just one analysis for it. They don't care what we feel in classics. They always say, 'Why you students can't make creative thinking? WHY?' Well, I think everyone knows the basic cause of this situation. Except for the politicians haha :) We need some change in every system of Korea... Such inefficient, competitive, and no worthy environments for the future of our descendants.

This particular way will help formulate your debating and critical thinking skills. • identify the question/s being addressed • describe the core argument/ or narrative • assess strengths and weaknesses • suggest possible counter-arguments and further questions arising • conclude with what you think, overall, about the reading concerned This technique is being taught at Master's level here in the UK. • 12:28 - 13:06 this girl speaks the cold hard facts. Not just in South Korea, it applies to Asia generally. People tend to assume the ranking of your school/uni reflects on how well you do. Kids are taught to study hard to join a good university, technically it is correct, but many kids lost the chance and ability to realize their talent/potential or dreams. And as the girl in the video said, once you get into a top uni, no one helps you out. Many people are lost in the competitive world, even if they look like they are "doing well in a good university"

    @havanaaa@havanaaa3 жыл бұрын
    • As someone who went to a top university in the States, it's the same thing. A good portion of my high school went to Top 10 universities around the world (much like the math champ in the video), and they just realize it's still as competitive. The school doesn't matter so much as the habit of working as hard as we did in high school. Not pulling 3-hour sleep nights anymore, but after doing it for 4 years, you learn to hustle and be super efficient when working. It helped to build a skill in which I can enter concentration at any time if I really force myself to. But at the end of the day, the universitiy just doesn't carry you. It's all about what you do there. If you get burnt out after high school and stop trying with that vigor, then you're better off saving your energy.

  • I'm glad that I live and studied in Switzerland. Here, these sort of rankings don't exist. You don't have to be the the best in every class and be admitted to prestigious schools and unis to be successful. The great thing about our scholar system is that after secondary school, you'd either go to highscool or choose to take an apprenticeship (you learn a job, e.g. as a mechanic). In any case you will be studying for a few years and get a diploma once completed. The great thing is that once you have your working diploma, you can still go to university to study if you wish. You will not be rejected simply because you haven't attended prestigious schools or didn't have top grades. Everyone is given the opportunity to evolve intellectualy no matter how they have performed before. Swiss highschools and universities belong to the best in the world, yet we aren't restricting access to only the top end students.

In order to conduct a survey I have contacted a huge number of kongstagram students... and you would believe how many of them told me they were so busy studying that they couldn’t even spend 5 minutes on the survey (though they were all really nice about it, and their “no” was a very eloquent answer to my survey as well). As for the ones who answered my questions.. let’s say that suicidal thoughts, constant fear of not being “enough”, and an average of 13hours of study were their average answers. I’ll never forget how painful it was to read their answers: one girl even replied “you cannot have both health and success anyways”... Thank you Asian Boss for this interview!

    • I was a straight-A student from middle school to high school. College was freaking difficult. I learned that I loved learning, but not studying. I hate the pressure of exams and finals. I thought high school was very easy because whatever was taught in class was actually similar to the questions in the exams. I have a very good memory so I was a good test taker in high school. I did all the homework on time in high school and college. The difference was some of the questions in the exams in college were not taught in class but coming from "studying" extra materials outside of class. I didn't like studying especially topics that weren't interesting. But I did enjoy learning topics that were interesting and related to my current career. If I had used up so much time "studying" for things I didn't really like to do, I would be forcing myself to "want to study" those topics. And some people have a hard time figuring out what they want to do because they forced themselves to do well on everything and forgot that they enjoyed something more than others. There needs to be a balance between "studying" and "learning". Learning something new is for life, studying ends when you get out of school.

    • I don't know where you live, but in the US it's absolutely a "male" major, despite efforts to expand diversity. It's not about the subject matter, but about the attitudes of colleagues after they graduate and find a job. Employers lowering standards to force gender diversity at the workplace haven't proven effective, since there's now the "diversity pick" stereotype to work against. It really depends where you look, some countries are better about it than others. Not to mention that, for whatever reason, high-paying subjects just tend to not appeal to women in the US. Could be stereotypes, social constructs, upbringing, etc. Too many factors to take into account.

    • @@Steambunbun There's a big difference between "slacking off" and working to the point of exhaustion. And it has been proven that workers who are happy and well-rested are vastly more productive than those who technically work more hours, but burn themselves out in the process. You say society will collapse if no one works. That's fiction, since people wanna make money, if nothing else. The true threat to all the competitive Asian societies like South Korea, Japan, etcetera is declining happiness + increased depression. Because not only do you get more suicides and mental health problems, but people won't, or rather can't, get into relationships. Less people having a partner = less children being born = a very unhealthy high average age. Can't keep a country running if 80%+ of its citizens are elderly.

Domicile is such a big thing and then students whose parents have transferable jobs end up suffering the most.Also there are more applicants for NEET than JEE every year. As far as difficulty of exam is considered they measure different skills. In NEET students have to be mentally aware because they trick you with words and has to have very good speed and memorisation power. This is the skill you need in operation theatre whereas in JEE I don't have any in hand experience but I guess it works on technical problem solving and that's what they test there. Due to social media everyone thinks sucess means: a big car, a big house, a family. Basically the millionaire lifestyle. People don't realize that true millionaires invent, innovate, and work beyond the norms of our society. Finding untapped markets and thinking outside the box. I was already aspiring to become a web developer which was a lucky goal since I'm literally living off maintainence fees and ad revenue. But they don't teach this stuff in schools. Schools teach people to be obedient. Not to be innovative. Because all countries have an old generation that wants to stay on top and stop the young'ins from innovating and taking control from them

Intelligence causes depression and the fact that you try even harder to go up will give less satisfaction levels. People are satisfied when they work on what they like. You could have your own business, become a content creator like Asian Boss itself, photographer, wedding planner and many more. We are in the era where there are many many kinds of opportunities that are easily reachable and does not require huge amounts of efforts in studying. All you need for career growth is interest and discipline. I went to one of the top colleges in India. Although I did not work so hard to be where I am but everyone around me did work super hard. I feel for them, I feel their pain, I feel their lack of social skills/communication skills. Good college probably helps out in the beginning but when people reach their thirties, academics are of very very less importance.

Poverty in Korea is relative afterall. We just need not to be taught that unless we become the top 1%, we're total failures, and going to prestiegious university is what defines us. Like you said - academic performance is only one aspect of a person and we have a vast range to choose from. And even if you know you're below average, it's about finding what makes you happy (although it's true in most cases that if you like something enough, you'll probably repeat it enough to be above average)

Once I graduated the situation didn't improve and I was lost. Worked odd jobs to start paying off my debt and just feeling lost and hopeless the entire time. Then, luckily a friend introduced me to her company to work until I figured out my life and thanks to that opportunity I finally discovered a place I liked working at. I was 26 at the time and had to go back to school to move up in the company, racked up a second school debt to get through it. But now I am working at something I really enjoy and have managed to pay off all my debt (in big part to living at home for the longest time). I think feeling lost is very normal and not knowing what you want even more so. Probably most people stumble into their careers by chance (like me). So right now, just look into all different careers. Volunteer, take summer jobs if you can, maybe along the way something will inspire you to pursue it more seriously. And honestly, if you still can't find what you like, you can always consider diploma careers that doesn't take long to study for therefore less debt, allow you to find a job more easily (hopefully) and will give you time to consider other options on the future. Sorry for this long post but I wish you good luck and hope you will find your footing in the world soon!

    • Most people have NO idea what they really want when they enter university. I've had friends who were Pre-med when they started but changed their majors to Cognitive Science. I've had friends that were undecided up till 2nd year and finally found she enjoyed Ethnic Studies so went to do Social Work. Have friends that were in Engineering up till their 3rd year but didn't enjoy it and changed majors. All eventually found their calling, but what they came with is not what they ended up doing after college. There is nothing wrong with that as long as you have an idea by the time you finish college on what you're going to do. Do internships while in college so you can see how the real world is like for your chosen career and if that changes your mind because of your experiences, know that it might just be the work environment of that place, but it may not be the same for other companies. Every company has its own culture. Some companies are toxic and have stressful environments, while others are fun and challenging, but offer so much career growth. There is nothing wrong with finding a new company to work for every 6 months - year. You do know that Silicon valley employees tend to change their company every year so they can keep raising their rate much easily? It's how you present yourself to the interviewer too.

What matters more is really how good you are at what you do and how well you can interact and work with people.

    • I understand you, I am half South Korean who lives in Africa. Both of my Korean parents always tell me , “If you don’t get over 80% or be number one you’ll never be able to travel around the world like you wished, because many people look down on people who live in Africa so if you want to visit America or Israel or Palestine or Romania or Poland then work harder, you’re Korean and Koreans were suppose to work harder, a Korean child can even beat you. You’re going to Germany when you go to college and do you think they will accept you if you came from Africa? No, if you work hard and be number one they will only accept you.” But all the stress and work is making my head hurt and I have to wake up 3am everyday to study and even in my spare times like holidays I have to study and only get a short time of rest, but when I rest all I think is “What grade or percentage will I get when I get my marks back?” or “What if I failed? What will my parents reaction will be?” or “What if I failed the next term and what if I have to start high school all over again?” and “I don’t know what career I want to take when I grow up, what if my parents will be disappointed if they knew I don’t want to be a doctor?” and “What if my parents knew I want to change my gender when I grow up? What will they think? Will they beat me and disown me?” and all these negative thoughts will never leave my mind until I read a book or hang out with my friends for a short time.

    • Oh sorry ma'am. I don't think so. I am an alum of SNU undergrad, and your comment is a typical myth, in some sense an insult (or, in the worst case, some unknown form of jealousy the student in the video mentioned) Most of my friends I know from college had happy childhood, and are living happy life. My point is, high achievement and having deprived childhood are just two separate things. Most of them really enjoyed learning and are truly enthusiastic about new knowledge. Do you know why? Because if they really didn't enjoy and just do what their parents force them to do like machine, usually they cannot enter SNU. SNU is not that 'easy' school such that any hardworking machine can simply go in, without real enthusiasm to their achievement. It's just your belief SNU students didn't have a chance to enjoy PROPER childhood. You might be imagining a machine like kid who had no friend, no playing time, no childhood happiness, no independent thinking, no interpersonal skills. Sorry, there's no place for such dull people in our school :) Hope you think about what the student in the video said, they are also just normal students.

I was really surprised to find out that the majority of my classmates studied abroad for high school and only a couple did all of their education in Korea. It was kinda a stereotype that students in the international studies major didn't receive their primary education in Korea and was easier for them to get in because of that.

  • Good thing I’m living in Germany. Going to university here I can tell it’s way more relaxing. Employers are looking for practical skills instead of how many A++++ you have. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I feel bad for the students in SK. They are living their live for education and learning day and night. Must be super exciting...

    @-Seppuku-@-Seppuku-3 жыл бұрын
    • It's not all that bad. The strict meritocracy here in Asia or atleast in the developed ones has its benefits and it really depends on the cultural lens you wear on how you see the system. You would be surprised to know that the most staunch defenders of the system are those from poor families since this is a ticket for their children to get into a really good university that would otherwise only be accessible for the rich like in other countries. Graduating from these universities means you are an appealing candidate for a job at a major corporation.

      @mcvgs1780@mcvgs17803 жыл бұрын
    • yes, might be that the German university system is 'way more relaxed' from a student's perspective and that's comparably nice. Sad fact in Germany is also that both the quality of university lectures as well as the quality of knowledge of the students has been decreasing rapidly for many years now. You can see it at the Gymnasium already, these days you have Gymnasium graduates with grade 1.0 and they are not even able to write a grammatically correct sentence in German, let alone in English. That was very different some 20 years ago. You only got 1.0 for your Abitur when your were exceptional in everything and only a few students got that mark and it was a sign of high quality and knowledge. Now everyone and his mom gets the 1.0 for the sake of everyone feeling cozy and loved and no one should feel disadvantaged no matter how bad a studentfactually is, because everyone wants to study no matter if they are incompetend in every single subject. So the universties are full of many 'relaxed' students with comparably (especially internationally!) zero knowledge and motivation. They start studying, they know from the beginning that they can take every single university test up to three times, failing two of them and that is mostly they spirit of many 'relaxed' German students 'hey and yay, I can fail two times, so I procrastinate studying for the first two times and instead go partying hard', I'll be fine to get through the third time, somehow, even if it's by the skin of one's teeth. Oh, and those 'third time's a charm' students are often the ones haggling in this third test, when they also failed that third time, trying to 'get through anyways' by discussing endlessly with the examiner. So yeah, it's all sooo relaxed in Germany compared to many other countries, true- but is that a good thing? Not in my opinion. Should it be as tough as in South Korea? Certainly not, as I think that is counterproductive as well at some level, but I'm quite tired of the often comparably lazy German students attitude focussing mainly on relaxing and searching loopholes to get through comparably easy exam situations when they have three chances for every test anyway. But, just my humble opinion from quite an opposite persepective of the initial posting.
