Hello everybody,
in this video i am restoring an old train lantern from the former gdr or east germany. A good friend of mine asked me to restore the train lantern for her father, who used it with his friends over 50 years ago as a light source when he celebrated and relaxed with his boys. The lantern will be restored for his 73rd birthday, then he can finally enjoy the lamp again with his three daughters and friends.
The lantern was manufactured by VEB Ueckermünde in 1967 in the German democratic republic. Funnily enough, the train lantern was produced by the ship lantern factory located there.
Before the introduction of overhead lines, which supplied the trains with electricity, train tail lights marked the end of the train or the end of a wagon. Lamps of the same design had already been manufactured and used in all German train traffic since the 1920s. In the original state, these lamps were operated with petroleum burners. The present example, however, was equipped with an electric bulb more than 50 years ago.
The video of the restoration documents all phases of the diy project. Starting with the disassembly to the assembly of the finished parts.
A restoration project that took me much more effort than I had originally anticipated.
Already during disassembly I realized that this mass product was not intended for disassembly. Rivets were used instead of screws. Hinges were mounted and then painted over and many of the metal joints were spot welded.
After I had done my best to disassemble the lamp into its individual parts, I could begin the actual restoration work.
First, all parts were sandblasted. I used corundum or glass beads as blasting medium.
Glass beads are used when only a little abrasion is desired. Since I wanted to preserve the enameled lampshades, they were sandblasted with glass beads.
After blasting I started with the metal work. With body tin I soldered cracks and deep dents. Then, after a primer coat, filler could be used to even out the last uneven areas and to create a good base for the paint.
I then painted the lantern in three colors with water based paint and sealed the whole thing with 2 component clear coat.
I then polished the paint with car polishing compound in grades 1000, 2500 and 3800.
After I finished the painting I could straighten all small and connecting parts, grind them, nickel plating them and finally polish them.
Afterwards I had to ask myself how to cut glass, because a non-original red acrylic glass was replaced by a real red glass.
I was also able to find an original petroleum burner and thus restore the lantern to its original condition. If you want to know what john wick has to do with this part you better watch the video :)
The work was rewarded this time with a "Stiegl - Goldbräu" beer, which did not perform in the test quite as well as I had expected. Nevertheless, a good beer for a day on the mountain or after skiing.
The assembly then worked smoothly and I am very happy with the result in the end. Especially after I was done with testing.
Let me know how you like the project and share the video with friends or family if you had fun.
Stay healthy

Once again, an amazing restoration Dr. Beer... Not perfect, you say? Yes, it is. It is even more than perfect. All your dedication for the sake of making another human being happy, is simply wonderful. The result -really- is something to be proud of and the best thing is, you have made someone very happy; more than that I imagine; the lantern must have sentimental value for him. I predict this is the best gift he has had in a long time. Thanks so much for sharing with us, I was really looking forward to a new project. I really appreciate the trouble and time you are taking with filming and editing the result so meticulously, it is highly appreciated. The patina, you left with enamel, is really an addition to the project. :-)
What are you doing to me???? I sit here reading the comments and try to answer all of them and out of nowhere yours pops up. Thank you so much. knowing that you've been there since a while watching and commenting on my videos is already something. But realizing how you sat down and thinking of and typing such a kind feedback really means the world to me. Thank you so much. See you soon!
You're more than welcome bro. A big thank *you* for sharing your lovely and amazing content; I hope you will keep doing this :-) It is a great honor to see you take the time to read the comments you've been given, but also take the time to comment to those as well :-) I am humbled. How did the recipient respond to the finished product?
@@user-hj7ls3lm3x would like to know this too. (I'm hoping it's nothing far from, "Don't lie, you found a replicate on eBay, didn't you?!")
My grandfather was a train engineer and worked at the railroad for many years. There is actually an old train lantern mounted outside maybe 20 feet from where I am at this very moment. My grandpa converted it to be an outside light that works with a switch inside. This really makes me wish I could restore it. Not only as an homage to him, but also because the electrics might be old and dangerous. We don't use it much, as it's really just for aesthetics and doesn't provide much light, but it does get occasionally flipped on and it worries me. However, I do still love seeing it work after all these years and love that it reminds me of him.
"BEAUTIFUL... BEAUTIFUL... BEAUTIFUL...what else could I say but... BEAUTIFUL"...😊
As an American rail enthusiast who owns some lanterns himself (eight of them from six US railroads), I have to admit that you did a real nice job in restoring that lantern. Hopefully its owner enjoys it for years to come.
Hey Kevin. This means a lot especially because you are enthusiastic for train lanterns
Excellently done. I'm sure it will be a great birthday gift.
I will find out in August. Thanks a lot J.
Great job. He’s going to be very happy!
He was and that made me happy
Truly amazing work and results. Wouldn't it have been nice to see the birthday boy with his gift?
He will receive it in august. dont know if he will like to see himself on youtube :D
Beautiful restoration
Brilliant (literally) restoration
Thank you Leonard
Great restoration! One of the nicest!
Glad you liked it so much!!!
If it puts a smile on the father's face, then it is all worth it. And I'm sure it did.
I'm really looking forward to his birthday
@@NTRprojects Oh, OK, his birthday is coming up. The look on his face will be priceless. 👍
You did a great job on it looks fantastic.
Beautiful restoration!
Thank you very much!
did a fantastic job. the the job came out perfect.
Fantastic job he'll love 💘it
Thanks a lot
Apologies if this is already in the comments - but was your friend's father pleased? I was thinking "this is so wonderful, but what if the father wanted to keep the electrical option?" and then you added it at the end! Your respect for the pieces you're working on is the reason you're my favorite. You can see it in how gently you pulled back the stays on the glass.
Hey Kendra he was very happy when he received it as I was told and he wrote me a personal email with pictures.
Perfect! I agree with another viewer that it's the best one yet. The owner was thrilled no doubt. Great job once again doc. Like your restorations so much it's difficult to watch 90% of the other guys on KZhead. If you're ever in America I would love to shake your hand!
It was such fun to see you doing this marathon. It's such an honor to know that you liked the videos so much. I'm working on the next project and I'm looking forward to see your name popping of again. Thank you Roger. Where will I find you in the US?
@@NTRprojects I'm in a small town in western North Carolina. The town is Burnsville. It's in my beloved Appalachian mountains. I wish I had found you on You Tube much sooner but just retired last year. I have certainly learned a lot and enjoyed the videos so much! Please keep going with these fascinating and beautiful restorations.
Very nice restoration.
Thanks a lot Larry
Gorgeous work! The brass turned out nicely and I love that you went the extra mile to get that red glass. Fantastic!
Everything about this project made me smile 😊
You've got it right on the money. Nicely done sir very nicely done indeed.

Your friend needs tuition on pouring a beer - bring out more bottles! Great restoration and great production! All the best
I think she was just really excited about the camera 😁
Alte Menschen brauchen viel Licht (Alterssichtigkeit, Grauer Star, usw.).
Very well👍beautiful
Thanks a lot
Great idea with this screw and washers to straighten the plate and great job, of course
I couldn't find any other way or tool to do it, so I tried my only idea and it worked out. Was a nice moment I have to admit. I'm glad you enjoyed the project.
Great channel, great work!!!👏👏👍👏👍
Thank you fellow enthusiast
Fantastic! Beautiful lantern and about as close to perfect a restoration as you can get. 😃👌🏼
David I'm pleased to receive such a nice feedback

VEB Schiffslaternenwerk, LOL. Aber gute Arbeit von Dr. Bier !

Toll geworden.
Stunning renovation!
Amazing! As all your restorations... I just want to watch more and more!
Very well done, good job on leaving the enamel alone, looks better that way. great job on sourcing the lantern for the lamp. making it whole was a wonderful decision. I think I would rate the restoration 9/10 and I doubt I could have done any better.
Thank you Christiaan!!!! Cheers!
Simply stunning!

Thank you Chazz
You did a great job and it shows in the result.
Very nice of you. Thank you!
Dude that’s a brilliant result, love it !
Thanks again Justin
You have excelled yourself!! A truly fantastic restoration!
Care and detail. You will always get a good result when you take your time. An old Polish window washer (Michael) taught me to always clean glass with slightly dirty soapy water and to use a razor blade with the glass wet to prevent possible scratching. He passed 30+ years ago but his knowledge lives on.
Sound interesting. Do you know why it has to be slightly dirty?
@@NTRprojects I Believe he said the little particles of dirt act like a very mild abrasive. He would sprinkle a small amount of soil from the flower pot into the bucket of soapy water before he started. He also kept a razor blade in his mouth while he cleaned but I don't recommend that one.
@@PRRGG1 that sounds very reasonable. Quite interesting
Cracking job. Excellent work. Window sealant is called ‘Putty’ in the UK. What you call Putty, we call ‘Filler’.🙂👍🏻
Hey Nigel. Very nice info. I hope I keep it in mind, but I cant promise that there wont be mix ups again :D
Love the window sealant (Fensterkitt) - its a bit smelly but so nice to work with. Thanks for your work!
What a great job 👏🏻
Thanks Suzanne
Your best one so far. Your creativity and craftsmanship is incredible!
You really think so? Thank you my friend!
Absolutely fantastic!
Thank you Toby
Sieht toll aus. Super gemacht.
Danke Michael
@@NTRprojects Nicht dafür. Ehre wem Ehre gebührt
Awesome restoration. Guarantee it is now better than it ever was “new”. I’m afraid my OCD would have forced me to redo the enamel inside the shades. You did well to resist the urge! Cheers! ~ John from Ohio, USA
I feel you. Sometimes I think I will leave something like it is and five minutes later I'm sanding it down :D
Fantastic restoration
Awesome video as always 👍
Thank you Francisco
One of my dearest friends collected train lanterns and he would have been amazed by your restoration. Absolutely beautiful.
Thank you Patricia that was touching
Using the smoker/oven thingy as a paint booth is GENIUS!
Thank you nIna. I even built in a ventilation by now
Wow! You light up my life 😃🤟💗
Absolutely worth it!!
If you say it, it must be true. Thank you once again

Muy bonito y muy bien restaurado precioso.
Sehr schon und wunderbar
Vielen lieben Dank Leonard
It's hard to be piece in 1967 they still were using flaimed laterns. Great job!
That's what I was thinking
British Rail were using paraffin tail lamps into the 1980s.
@@ThePillenwerfer wow really. Haven't the trains been completely electrified by that time? Or was there another reason?
@@NTRprojects British Rail was state-owned at the time so it was probably part of a general lack of investment and a feeling that it wasn't broke so why fix it. I'm talking about trains that were a string of vehicles pulled by a locomotive. Diesel and Electrical Multiple Units and InterCity 125s had electric lights from new. Even then for a good while DMUs and EMUs carried an oil one as well. Part of the tail lamp's purpose was to indicate to signalmen that the train was complete and during the day the big white lamp itself was easier to spot.
@@ThePillenwerfer yes that might be the reason. I had a job interview at German railway once and they told me that they still have technical equipment in use which is well above 100 years old
Wow looks awesome.
Thank you Jess
Thanks DR. another fine job, its not always about perfection, patina etc. make it real
Glad to hear you liked it Robert
