I agree with all of them except the AirKing. I think they improved it , aesthetically and mechanically with a better 70hour movement. .I think it made sense to change it up.
Love the new AK. If nothing else the lume on the 3, 6, and 9 is great. I think the thinner case makes it look more elegant and finished, even though it's a sports watch. Big win for me.

Now I get why the much hated Moonswatch made it into your favourite watch list! I confess that I have a soft spot for the Air Kings (both old and new) as well as for the Millgauss. But while being admittedly a Rolex fanboy, nothing could drive me to that horse hoof of a watch which is the Deep Sea Challenge. Happy Holidays everyone!
My friend and I were discussing the new AirKing and shared the thought that Rolex missed an opportunity with the AirKing. Considering that it’s a pilot watch, they could have added a jumping hour function to the movement to make it even unique. The AirKing already has a quirky design, might as well add that to the movement. Omega 41mm Aqua Terra has a jumping hour feature and adding that to the AirKing adds that another unique layer to its overall design.
I wish Rolex did jump hours outside of its GMTs. Omega is superb at this.

I wish it had maintained the curved case as before. A new case more similar to the Yacht Master or the Daytona.
100% agree that the 222 should be on the fav. list and the "hockey puck" of a Deepsea challenge on the worst. It is a top heavy watch because of the 9.5mm sapphire glass on the titanium watch

wow, one of my favorite brands had three of the six........but i really have to agree with you. every year around new release time i get so excited about what could be and then get so underwhelmed after the release.
The Deep Sea Challenge would look great on the outside of a submarine, but not on someone's wrist. Would be an extremely cool paperweight to have on your desk though! To each his own.

I love the watch world. I don't have the means to purchase any of the watches presented. But, It's still so exciting to see the new releases. It's kinda like waiting for the blockbuster movie to come out. I'll never meet the actors. The hobby is pure entertainment and a love for beautiful craftsmanship.
Oisin: I agree with your selections for "worst of year" with the exception of the Rolex "Air King" (new one with 05 dial). While agree maybe "not needed" I like that the 3 - 6 - and 9 are now "lit" (glow in dark) and I don't mind a sports watch having the "sports watch" case style. Want dressier? Get a Datejust.
Great list! Thanks for mentioning the moon swatch!!! It’s a plastic piece of junk… A.k.a. typical swatch… If they were going to try to charge $260 for it they could’ve given us something other than the logo from a mega… As soon as I held one of my hands I realize this was a terrible money grab and that it would not age well! And that means the watch and it’s not going to age well for omega and swatch… $99?! Sure that would be a great price point for a throwaway fad of the week piece of junk

I was lucky enough to get the AD call two weeks ago…. and now have the new AirKing. I personally disliked the original model… but the new release fixed everything. It’s a bit Marmite with the vague Bloodhound connection… but I like the the quirkiness tbh. Fits in between my DateJust41 and GMT II in the collection. Love it.

Again, more than decent summary from Oisín. There are plenty of ugly watches to choose from in 2022, that's for sure, and I agreed with most in this list. i can agree to this list but not entirely with the verdict on the Airking. It seems with the move to standardize the Airking by giving it the "typical" steel sports case they made it more digesteable for a wider range of customers. I prefer the old case too, but i beliefe more people like the typical steel sports case, probably giving them more options for their purchase plans. So i think it was a good move in general. And also the the OP, Datejust, Milgauss and Explorer 1 and more others still have the rounded case. So, i think Rolex didn't have to change the Airking, but they did, which is fine.

As a lefty I appreciate Rolex and other brands thinking of us. However, I wear my watch on the right wrist and never have the crown digging into my skin I would rather have some chronograph pushers on the left for me.
Agreed. Just a note: there are fountain pens for left handed people. Doesn’t work otherwise

I don't believe that anyone actually loves the Air King. People only started buying it because it was the one stainless steel Rolex sportswatch that for a time was easily accessible, and they would then convince themselves that they like it as much as Explorer, GMT, etc....
Oisin, you missed this one. Cartier Ballon Bleu Blue face, It was introduced in 2021 however, 2022 first time i saw in stores. The blue face looks great, the distraction is its almost impossible to read, you can hardly see the time at any angle because it washes out the hands.
I have a 2022 Air-King and I’m glad they fixed the naked 5…they also upgraded the movement. The 3230 has 70 hours power reserve. I’m also a lefty and don’t like left handed anything - I’m fully adapted to a right handed world..
Kinda sad to hear that a leftie caved in to the right handed world! But to each his own. I am a lefty, and I absolutely loved the Destro GMT! Out of all of my watches, including Pateks it’s my favorite. Putting it on winding it and wearing it feels natural. It was an absolute gift from Rolex to Lefties

Nobody can realistically dive in a scuba gear to the depths the rolex deep sea is rated for without dying so I don’t see the practical application. The moonswatch however is a good everyday watch regardless of the hate. Very light and I don’t have to wind it every 2 days like the moon watch

I just bought the 2023 air king. I was gonna buy a date just but I decided. I love the new aircape. I love all the changes. I think it looks awesome and I think it's an awesome watch. It's different, that's what I like about it. I like all the colors on the dial. I love the green second hand it's just so different than anything else. Everybody runs out and buys themselves a seamaster. Or buy themselves a skydweller or a any other Rolex watch, they all look the d*** same. You can most people can't tell the difference between the 1970 submariner versus a brand new submariner. Well, like about this watch is it's brand new. It's totally different and if they just continue it next year. I don't care, that's just gonna make my watch worth more money.

I agree with you with the Air King. I much preferred the quirkiness of the 116900 over the 126900. It’s what makes the watch endearing The 126900 is … example of conformity

Nice job. Considering how little Rolex has to do not to screw up their watches, that they had 2 well-deserved terrible watches on the list, made me happy. I am totally disgusted with the brand.
Actually, a left handed fountain pen would be appreciated!😉 On a serious note, I like a "normal" watch on my right wrist as a left handed person. The crown never digs into my hand. I would never buy a watch made for left-handed people.
I'm in the same boat, I tried on a Tudor LHD and didn't like how the crown dug into my wrist.

@@bjoernaltmann Yeah, I know but they don't work as good as a normal pen for a right handed person. They make left handel nibs for standard fountain pens as well. A normal nib works ok for me as long as it's not too fine or stiff.

Absolutely a spot on list. I would have loved if Lenny had presented it. He does negative so well. As for the Deep Sea. The only use for it if you buy it is put it on an expensive fancy winder and put it on your desk as an expensive conversation piece.

Oisin, I'm surprised at your not having a Planet Ocean or two for the thick wrists. I wear two of them on my 6.75 or 7 inch wrist all the time and they even look great on mine (IMHO). Great bracelet on those!!!
The Seamaster looks wrong because the dial doesn't match the bezel. It's supposed to be silicon crystals or something, to represent a beach, but they could have represented that with gold dust or something of a similar texture. So many options would be better than that industrial material they went with!

How do you wind a watch on your right arm if it is not a left handed watch? As for the Air-King, it looks like a $300 Seiko, in fact a $500 presage looks better. As for the new Deepsea, now that's a summer watch just to show off.

The Rolex GMT Master II Sprite, the color is cool, but the crown is on the left side, it should be the right side, but it doesn't interest me. Plus it's disappointed.

Absolutely agree about the left hand Rolex "7 up" GMT, for me it's just a lazy cash grab. If the decide to make watches for left handed people thats fair enough. But I believe even left handed people don't want the date window at 9 o'clock. So Rolex should have done something else than just flipping the watch case over.

The bars on the AP RO-OS Music look less like a graphic EQ and more like VU meters on a mixing console to me...which would make more sense IMHO.
VU meters are needles swinging from side to side. And yes, found on every console. There are some graphic eq outboard units and they were found on old stereos too.
@ Yes, VU meters on older analog consoles are needles. The AP RO-OS Music reminded me of the meters on a Yamaha MBCL meter bridge. Also similar to the meters on the Midas M32 digital console, and the channel meters in ProTools. I also remember the colored graphic eq outboard units! The positions of the "colored stacks" on the AP RO-OS Music just made no sense to me if viewed as a graphic EQ (as you pointed out), but made more sense to me if viewed as VU meters on a digital console. Really enjoy your content, Oisin - top notch!
I'm a big fan Tool watches. In particular the GMT function and Pilot styling. I just wish Omega and Rolex would start a turf war with this in mind. All the Rolex GMTs are really just Divers with colors and four hands. No REAL Pilot watches at all. Give me sword hands on a big dial with a clean be dive bezel and GMT chapter ring in 42.. to 44mm and you will have a winner.
I think Rolex should have made the air king a 24 hour watch. Not a gmt, just one hour hand, circling the dial once a day. Could it be more pilot?

Some of the best divers in the worl have the crown on the left side , the idea is that the crown is better protected during working .
