A leading politician from Germany's Social Democrats has been attacked while campaigning in the eastern city of Dresden.
Matthias Ecke is a candidate in the upcoming European Parliament elections for Chancellor Olaf Scholz's center-left SPD. He was attacked while putting up campaign posters. Party officials say Ecke was seriously injured and required surgery. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has condemned the attack as a threat to democracy.

    • Sure sure, when a politician is attacked its an "attack against democracy". But how come we never say that kind of thing when its the voters who are being insulted, harassed, threatened, or beaten for their political views?

    • Extremism has little meaning as such as it simply denotes how far an opinion diverges from the center at a certain time. At times women and gay rights activists, people advocating for general suffrage and even those calling for the complete abolition of slavery were considered extremists. When it comes to political violence, Germany has seen tougher times. Especially the hard left became comparatively tame, there are no active terrorist groups anymore and violence in the streets has abetted. However, there is a hardly quantifiable potential for violence by lone actors, as well as new movements with comparatively lose ideological alignments. Both on the right, for example by the bizarre Reichsbürgermovement and the Incel internet phenomenon, as well as from the antiimperialist movement on the left, although I'm not sure to which degree they are buying into classical leftist ideals of economic equality. And of course there is political Islam, or Islamism as we call it - that becomes more and more visible, but is still of comparatively little effect when it comes to real violence.

Many of them are not even full time politicians and receive minimum pay for their job as representatives, most of them work full time jobs elsewhere, and many are so afraid after being targeted that they withdraw from communal politics, leaving the playing field to right wing candidates. The amount of attacks in remote regions has lead experts to conclude that these attacks are a coordinated effort to undermine democracy. Yes, some leftist extremists also attacked politicians on the far right but way less. In addition the motivation is also speaking for itself - right wingers specifically attack and weaken democracy. Right wingers are way better funded and way more organized. Left wingers attack the far right because they are afraid that the right wingers will destroy democracy.
