  • You know you have range as an actor when you can star in a serious film like Dune, then play a joyous character like Willy Wonka afterwards, and go back to Dune again, without missing a beat. Timothee Chalamet is so impressive.

    • Even tho genes wasn't anything Roald Dahl wanted. He went against everything Roald wanted and Roald hated Genes version so much so he didn't even want his name attached to it. Genes was awful compared to the book. Johnny Depps Charlie and the chocolate factory is exactly like that book and what Roald wanted with the original

The movie needed to have heart, soul and a smile. And it did just that! As Gene Wilder's Wonka put it: “Don’t forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he wanted….He lived happily ever after.”

  • I grew up watching the original, and always singing the songs with my mom. I'm 36 now and saw this alone on opening night. From the "here we go momma" at the chocolate shop, and especially with the blown kiss towards the end, I was in tears. After the credits rolled a guy behind me tapped me on my shoulder and asked "momma's boy?" and I laughed and said damn straight. Had to see this with her when I went home for Christmas, still cried.

  • The director and Timothee were asked about doing a sequel that would bridge the gap between this young Wonka and the one in the OG movie - and they both thought it would be great, but they'd have to handle it delicately because it would have to be dark in some places. My headcannon is that Wonka loses Noodle in some traumatic way after Slugworth and co. return to steal his ideas, so that's when he closes down the factory, travels the world again, and brings back the oompa loompas with him.

  • I grew up really poor in Brazil, and every time walking to school there was a chocolate factory, "Garoto Brand", and one day as a kid I found the portuguese translated book for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It had no cover, and in bad shape, but I remember reading it and every day when I walked past the factory I'd look at it, and smell the chocolate coming off of it and dream. I came to America way later, grew up, and one day when I went back to visit my home country I walked into the factory and asked them for a tour. It felt like going through the chocolate factory I dreamt of all, and the book fueled.

Nikki started tearing up at every place I did as well while watching with my sons 😂 Going into this with 🎶 a little trepidation 🎶 I think made me appreciate it more. My oldest son used to be a fan of the Johnny Depp Wonka but after this film I showed him the original film and he has watched that about twenty times since and then this version again to pick up on all the nostalgia feels I had while watching. It was a surprisingly delight for me, though I understand those who have serious qualms with this rendition as well.

    • You know what i find when it comes to Wonka adaptations? You have to go in each time like its the first. I originally loathed Depp's version because of how far it strayed away from Wilder's but years later i watched it again and realised how much work went into it. It may not come close to Wilder but DAMN did they put in the effort. Depp is hilariously unpredictable, the kids are great actors, the design is so Burton-packed and that one guy playing ALL of the Oompa Loompas - you just gotta separate the two cause if you see each one as a remake you'll just hate it and completely look past all the amazing work gone into them. Not that this film had that problem

  • I always feel weird when someone calls Gene Wilder's Wonka "the original". 'Cause, the original is Roald Dahl's book, and Wilder's Wonka is nothing like that one. Depp's Wonka is much more like the original, but unfortunately, by the time *his* Wonka came out, everyone was expecting it to be like Wilder's Wonka and were disappointed when it wasn't. The makers of **this** movie apparently took that lesson, because now, Roald Dahl's Wonka has been replaced by Wilder's.

      @PaperbackWizard@PaperbackWizardАй бұрын
    • People who say that clearly mean the original film, not the original story; and if we're being honest it is Wilder's version that has stood the test of time and is the benchmark to this day. Being loyal to the book does not make a film implicitly better, far from it in many cases. Different mediums and all.

    • @@seanking1775 You say that like Roald Dahl's original book hasn't "stood the test of time". By the way, he *hated* Wilder's version. It was made as a blatant cash grab, full of cynical product placements that failed to become actual products because the people who made the movie were better at making movies than they were at making chocolate. The only reason that movie has stuck around so long is because people like Gene Wilder so much. But *some* people still wanted to make an *actual* movie about the *actual* book, and they did.

  • I think my favourite part of the film was seeing Matt lucas and the original horrible histories crew in several roles for this film, the guys/girls deserve even more roles in future films.

  • i love this movie it was a love letter to the classic one... it was recieved well too.. unfortunately the force awakens although a bit clunky was a love letter to the originals that got memed on bc of south park and then everyone hated on it. super sad how south park unironically ruined the trajectory of the star wars franchise by making the higher ups question jj abrams lol
