Nikkor 180-600mm-two things to consider before buying the lens!

I have been asked many questions about the NIKKOR 180-600mm f5.6/6.3. I decided to talk a little bit about it and tell you what I think of the lens. I picked up my notebook and jotted down a few notes, here we go:
This lens is the ultimate lens for wildlife photography, especially bird photography. Is it sharp? Absolutely! Built very well! I spent over two hours in the rain with this lens mounted on the Z9! The combo functioned flawlessly! Very well balanced with the Z9! Another plus is the minimum focus distance! Since I am often at 600mm- a quick side note: My Z9 is always in crop mode to get a better reach, we are talking 900mm! At 900mm I can still focus within 7'.88" or 2.4 meters. Really handy for closeups should the occasion arise! The price is also more than fair given the prices of the competition from canon and Sony! one thing I also like about this is its customizable buttons. I have customized the L-fn button to switch from full frame to DX Mode! Really useful!
The lens takes 95mm filters, which I do not. I just clean the front element regularly with a fiber cloth!
In case you are in the market for this lens, get one!
But before you do, you need to consider a couple of things:
1) your camera body! Please be aware that I do not think that any of the current DX cameras can handle this great lens! Why? You might ask! I answer, simply the ISO performance. I highly recommend you pair the lens with a full frame camera, as full frame cameras tend to perform a lot better than DX cameras. I roll out of the house with ISO 2000 and i gradually dial it up to 4000 on my Z9 To get a 1/160th S around sunset time. The lowest i get away with! Z7/Z7II/Z6/Z6II/Z8/Z9.
2) The lens is on the heavy side, a little over four pounds! I personally have issues with the weight! BTW, I often shoot handheld!
In summary, I highly recommend the lens if you can tolerate the weight and you own a camera body that can help the camera in capturing some great images!
I hope this helps you in case you should be on the fence, still!
Until another video, take care everybody!

  • Great video, thanks. I have been considering this lens for a while - I already have the Z 100-400 (+1.4xTC) and the Z 800 PF but feel the 180-600 could be a great all rounder. Please don't take this the wrong way, but, when I watched your video on my MAC with the 27" 5K monitor, I am afraid your images don't look sharp, they really look very soft and this wasn't selling the lens to me. Then I noticed your video is only coming up as an HD resolution video. I would really recommend making your videos in 4K as there is a very noticeable improvement when viewers are watching on 4K / 5K displays and will show your videos in much better light. Personally I always shoot 4K and make my videos in 4K as the KZhead will always downscale if the viewer only has an HD screen or the bandwidth doesn't support 4K but when it does. it really sells the images so much better. Thanks again for the video.

    • Thanks a lot Brian for your comment ! To be honest with you, my budget doesn’t allow me to invest in the processing power of editing 4k videos ! Therefore, I just shoot HD! I will however try to post slides of 4k stills! Many thanks again !

    • @@elphotography3015 I have just returned from a nature reserve where i spent the day in two hides. I had with me my Z8 with the Z 800mm PF lens and the Z9 with the Z 100-400 + 1.4xTC. Whilst there i met another photographer with a Z9 and a Z 180-600. He let me try that lens and I took a few back to back shots with the 100-400+TC and the Z 180-600 with the same subject so I will be interested to see how they compare as there was good light and therefore should give a great comparison. Now i just have to download them!!

  • I would hope Nikon will match its pro APSC to be 40- 45mp. I shot with D3/D300, my friend had D5/D500. Both DX (DSLRs) more than held their own in all forms of photography because they matched the MP of their full frame counterpart. Matter of fact the D500 iq was quite good even for weddings! It is a legend amongst wildlife users. What I now expect is 40-45 mp DX as Nikon tradition shows it can be done. The Fuji 40mp sensor iQ is really good. But I believe Nikon should develop the new APSC sensor in- house. They did it with industry changing D3. The D300 (baby D3) was a friggin’ workhorse of a camera. Capable of low light focusing and fast sports focusing/shooting. I truly hope Nikon brings killer APSC back to the table.

    • I used the D500 for 6 months on my African Wild Life >> BRILLIANT ..only problem >> It was APS-C >>. soit had to go >> sadly >> IQ is King in my Life and when I put a 24 mm on my camera it must be that not some mental calculation

    • @@Mr09260 understood. Yes the Iq is not as good as full frame we all know this. The question is if it is good enough for the average pro. How many pro photographers that used APSC DSLrs and still do? It’s all about getting the shot. Majority of us are not printing, just posting to social media

    • Yes, D500 is absolutely legendary! I owned two bodies. I have heard rumours that Nikon will be releasing a Z90 mirrorless version of D500 sometime this year! I hope they do ! Thanks for your comment.

  • I don't know if it's the fault of the lens or the photographer, but the bird photos on the film don't look sharp, to be honest.

    • 1080p, looks like too slow shutter speed or haze distortion (on most part of footage) @@elphotography3015
