  • I know this doesn't apply to people looking to get the authentic experience of Three Houses, but there is a great mod by triabolical "No Monastery" that removes the monastery and I think it really helps with the pacing of the game. It does take some liberties rebalancing the game to accommodate for the lack of monastery, but I think it's great for replayability if you want to focus on the story and battles. There are some nice QoL updates as well, like removing gender-locked classes and making the route split choice more clear in Black Eagles.

  • Hey, everyone! I really hope you enjoyed the video! This one was a LONG time coming! That being said though, there were a few small editing mistakes caught late that I unfortunately cannot fix now due to lost footage😅 I tried my best with what I could do in KZhead studio, but it kind of sucks and couldn't let me do everything I needed to! But I'm also not going to re-record the whole video! So if you find one of the editing mishaps (or easter eggs, why not), you get a virtual pat on the head (so long as you're nice about it)! Thanks for watching!🍵

  • Great video! I had a lot of fun with Engage, but mainly because I'm a Fire Emblem veteran and preferred the return of more traditional elements like the weapon triangle and a more streamlined experience overall. The monastery was a lot of fun at first in Three Houses, but eventually it felt like a chore and slowed down the pace of the game too much for me. Three Houses definitely has more replayability though!

    • I disagree that 3h is definitely more replayable as engage is much better for doing ironmans. I also find engage units more customisable than 3h units as every class is viable. in 3h you only really need to play 2 routes AM/VW and CF as AM/VW/SS are practically identical. I also find the monastery makes replaying super tedious. If you just want to see everything the game has to offer 3h has more replayability. If you want to do challenge runs then engage has more replayability.

  • Really interesting video! Thanks for putting it together. I have been trying to make this decision myself. The last (and only) Fire Emblem game I played was the first one released (in Europe at least) on the Game Boy Advance. I was more looking for something where the story stays out of the way and there is more of a concentration on the battling so it looks like Engage is the way to go. Want to play them both eventually though.

    • Engage is very cool, but I would recommend Awakening or Shadow of Valentia if you have a 3Ds (especially Valentia if you are an old school player). I started with Fire Emblem (Fe7) on the GBA too, and Valentia would be the closest you have in term of game style (it's a remake from Fire Emblem 2). Engage is quite fun, but you will have a TON of management and things to do at your base between battles (leveling skills, doing mini-games, collecting stuff, leveling bonds etc). This is a trend that got more and more traction since Fire Emblem Fates, and it is very forced on the Switch games (to the point it almost take 1/2 of my playtime in Engage). Valentia and Awakening are more streamlined in term of game experience, especially Valentia where you don't have to overthink with mechanics like reclassing, inheriting skills and all that jazz 🙂

    • @@mega77 Not to be mean or anything, but how the hell did it take you *that* long to do the in-between battle stuff in Engage? 😭 You do support/bond conversations, collect the items from the farm animals, cook a meal and do the arena. Then potentially upgrade/buy/engrave weapons or items if you need to. Those take like 5 minutes, maybe 10 if you're really slow or indecisive (like me lol) and then you can go to the next map.

  • Thanks for the detailed comparison! I was looking exactly for this. However, now I'm wondering 3 Hope's or 3 Houses? 😂

    @justanotherday5441@justanotherday544110 ай бұрын
    • 3 hopes is a warriors style game so, essentially just going after hordes of enemies with hack & slash style of gameplay (think Fire Emblem Warriors or Hyrule Warriors) where as 3 houses is a strategy RPG that you strategically take out a set number of enemies and it’s more story based vs hopes being more combat based. (I hope that helps.)

      @jennnorris4829@jennnorris482910 ай бұрын
    • I would definitely play 3 Houses before 3 Hopes!! Given that 3 Hopes is a Warrior game (hack and slash ALL of the enemies) and 3 Houses is your standard FE fare, it's hard to compare on a gameplay level as it definitely comes down to personal preference. BUT 3 Hopes is a fun companion to 3 Houses as it gives an alternative look on the story events of 3 Houses!

      @qualitea_individual@qualitea_individual10 ай бұрын
    • From what I gather, Three Hopes' story VERY much assumes you're already familiar with Fodlan and the story of the original Three Houses, and would probably be very confusing if played first. So that's also something to consider if you're thinking about getting either.

      @BigKlingy@BigKlingy8 ай бұрын
  • Problem is both of them have merits and both have downsides. I feel like, honestly, I would have had a more refined Three Houses type experience (make the monastery far more streamlined, add more class customization so Wyvern Lord isn't the God class for everyone who isn't a gremory or magic user). Engage had good ideas but I feel like it was just an odd experiment whose intent is to figure out things for a future game. I don't know why they made skills a running gamut from near worthless (Etie's skill to gain strength when using an item, when she's probably going to be made into a Sniper and never have 1-2 range to make the most use of it and also limited) to amazing (Yunaka gaining crit for being in rough terrain). Also, Backups being so good leads to a meta where you want lots of warriors with longbows so you can roleplay as an Artillery Commander. Even though Three Houses is by far more of a chore (monastery), I've finished it six times. I haven't finished Engage once. It's bizarre. I presume even played slowly you could finish Engage twice before you finish Three Houses once.

    • Funny, I find Sommiel to be way more tedious than the monastery (probably because it doesn't reset between each fight or event). In engage if you want to optimize your run you will have to visit Somniel after each Story / Training / Emblem Battle. I also find it to take more time because you have to manage your skills more intensively than 3H, by getting bonds to train your characters with the emblem you want, reclassing, upgrading weapons with material, emblem powers and so on. in 3H you basically do your tour, fishing, dueling, best dish at the cantina for everyone + training your students and its done for the week.

      @mega77@mega7710 ай бұрын
    • @@mega77 I don't understand the idea that the Somniel is more tedious, but then I only have to interact with it once between each story event rather than up to four times.

    • Yeah class/character balancing and the tedium of the monastery activities were definitely the biggest issues on repeat playthroughs. There are mods for Three Houses if you're looking for a more streamlined experience (No Monastery). I think what both Three Houses and Engage should have done is just streamlined all the hub worlds entirely, given players the option to do every activity from one menu and remove redundant choices (auto-eat with all the students, having to unlock Bond levels in increments of 5).

    • @@QueenAleenaFan when I have the characters battle each other I can't skip the fights in Engage but can in 3 houses, roll for the rings and also clean them, when you want a stat boost you have to play a mini game ect. In 3 Houses all I do is eat for supports, skip training battle animations and garden Even if the sommiel doesn't force you to go every time, to get what you want from it takes longer than in 3 Houses

  • Honestly the problem of three hosues is that the balancing wasn't made with metagamers in mind, and most of the core old school fire emblem community clearly are metagamers The players who don't look up growth and strategies online can enjoy a lot taking time to grow an army with various classes without knowing which one are broken, and when you just going blind the monastery is a pretty fun thing (exept maybe at the end when you have too many actions a month and start running out of new things to do) But yeah for a new player just teaching your class your own way without knowing that it would also work if you made a full optimised wyvern knight party is fun. But the people who played casually like that aren't the type to go online and get engaged in heated debate about the game, so of course if you ask the fans community it'll look like most people didn't appreciate the game, but if you look at big polls made on more people, usually the game is very appreciated for it's story and it's customization gameplay. So really for me recommanding three houses depends on if you're the type who enjoys going blind or if you're the type who can't stop himself for looking up the metagaming of tactical rpgs to maximize their effectiveness, I think both are valid, tho personally I always do a first run of tactical rpgs blind with as little meta informations as I can because I belive that in an rpg figuring out your own strats is half the gameplay

  • This was my first video I watched on your channel, and besides a bit of a major spoiler you accidentally let slip, this was very well-done! As a longtime Fire Emblem fan since 2005, I agree with all of your takes, and wholeheartedly hope for an epic combination of the strengths of both of these games! However, what I'd like more is for another game in the style of Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn! Those games were masterpieces that undersold, so we might have to petition Nintendo quite a lot to ever get a return to the style that nearly killed the series. What are your experiences with other Fire Emblem games and spinoffs?

I'd love to see something like those two again, especially because I never got to experience those games when they came out (and even if they get a port, which would be great, it still wouldn't be ~the same~), so that would be awesome! • Engage is more like the 3DS games plus it’s a love letter for those who loved the 3DS games because there are returning characters and references to those games. Three Houses is kind of its own thing, a lot of focus on the social link stuff. Kind of FE meets Persona, but that dating sim stuff for me was a bit too much in Three Houses. I love the Persona games but I found it a bit annoying to have to do that stuff when I really wanted to focus on combat and the main story. Engage focuses much more on the main story and combat like we’re used to. Of course the relationship stuff is still in it but for me Three Houses had way too much of it. Engage also has the most addictive combat of any FE game (to me). Depends on what people want out of a FE game. Engage is much more like Awakening and Fates thank god lol

I picked Verdant Wind and I also felt the story was too long (I'm told it is the longer route). Being midway through Engage, I definitely feel like it's more fun with a lacking story. I beat the alternate world bit( no spoilers) and now Im on chapter 15 in the main world story and I'm just ready for it to end. Game play is cool, maps are fun but the story is reused from previous games and the Hounds are becoming a crutch. Its making the battles a slog to get through, especially with all the Skirmishes which you basically have to do to level up. With three houses, it was long but I was never bored and ready for it to end. Plus I'd venture to say there is much more replay value in Three Houses

  • If I had to recommend one of those 2 Fire Emblem games to someone who wishes to try the license, I would pick Engage. It's a cleaner looking game (graphics, UI, combat animation), and tacticaly more interesting. The story is a huge "Fire Emblem cliché" good dragon vs bad dragon + plot twists, it can't get more Fire Emblem than that. . I also find that the game does a good job introducing past characters, and could trigger the player curiosity to play other Fire Emblem games and discover characters like Lucina or Ike in their respective entries. Plus I like that the main Character is voice acted. BUT I would recommend 3H to a gamer that heavily values story over gameplay. I do not find Engage's story that bad, but 3H is definitly more interesting, especially on the lore and character side.

A good story can heal our heart, can inspire us, and relieve our anxiety from real world. 3H stories are touching and deep, characters are vivid and unique. I feel like they are just my companions along the journey, but Engage lacks it. I have no feelings for those characrers in Engage.

Seems like 3 Houses is a slow burn, kind of reminds me of the Persona series with long stretches of social sim / worldbuilding in between the combat gameplay. When I was younger I used to say the story doesn't matter, but I'm so uninterested in Engage's plot and dialogue I'm finding it a slog to get through, even if the rings add a LOT of user expression.

  • I really liked this video, so I'll drop a short version of my thoughts on the story of both here as well. 3H: I personally always go completely blind into new FE games, so all I know about them is usually just having seen the box art. 3H having you choose between the three houses was a pretty big surprise to me. Instead of rotating through armies like Radiant Dawn or having it split between 2 paths like Echoes, actually making the player lock themselves into just one third of the cast this early was pretty bold, but I liked it. I thought it'd also add a lot of replay value that way. Then I found out you can recruit pretty much everyone regardless of house, which was pretty disappointing to me. The reason this is important to the story is because of the impact it has on the post-timeskip maps. Like when I see a generic enemy axe unit wielding the Freikugel and standing in the center of the enemy formation because I snatched away Hilda to my side, it's jarring. It takes me right out of the story that the map wants to tell me, because this random unit is so obviously meant to be Hilda that I cannot take it seriously. I know there should be an emotional moment here where I fight my past aquaintances... but I'm not. Because I snatched them all to my side. This takes away so much from these confrontations. The world of Fodlan itself is very interesting and the major amount of political play reminded me a lot of the Tellius games. I'm personally not big into political intrigue stories, but it was done well enough to keep my interest. The only times the overarching story of the world felt lackluster were in Golden Deer, which kinda felt like a sidequest for a lot of its main story compared to the other routes, and when it comes TWSITD before the DLC was added, since we get next to nothing on them, which I thought was going to be a setup that leads to something later, but it just kinda never did. The blue and red routes are amazing story-wise, with gold lagging behind and white feeling honestly like an afterthought. Edelgard wants to change the status quo because it's in a horrible state where a majority of the people are oppressed because of the way they're born, she wants to topple the current rulers and establish a complete meritocracy. She belives the current system itself is fundamentally flawed and must be destroyed before any real change can happen. This goal is always treated as a good thing by the game, regardless of the route, but her methods are painted as unnecessarily cruel, warmongering and hypocritically evil at times. Dimitri wants to protect the status quo because, while it's not the best way it could be, it has proven itself as a mostly peaceful system. He believes he can achieve a betterment of the current system from within, rather than destroying it and building a new one. He thinks trying to create a new system through war is unnecessary and would only lead to pointless deaths in way too high numbers to be a reasonable idea. Claude... doesn't really believe in anything as hard as either of the two others. He's fine with keeping the current status quo because it worked decent enough until now and because he and everyone he cares about benefit more from this system than from trying to tear it down, but if it were to be toppled, his side wouldn't really lose out on much, so he doesn't care either way. Since he has no horse in the race, it leads to his post-war story to feel kind of pointless, which is why they had him go on this whole other sidequest with nemesis that's mostly unrelated to the war going on behind him. I really liked how the game portrayed none of the three options as objectively correct, but rather as different opinions on an issue. And you, as Byleth, have to side with one of them depending on what you yourself believe. Engage: The story is a lot more simple and a lot more straightforward, more reminiscient of the GBA titles rather than the Tellius games. This is both a strength and a weakness in regards to the story. Being focused on a simpler plot with a smaller cast of characters meant they had time to let the villains breathe and to let the themes shine. FE villains have always been kind of a coinflip. You usually have a metric ton of one-off smalltime crooks, generals and evil politicians in armor that get sent after you like fodder. Not helped by the fact that "boss" enemies in FE have always been kind of a joke anyway, since they're usually just slightly stronger versions of regular units, with the unique portrait/model being the only real difference. Even moreso when they can't move off their single tile. In contrast, Engage's villains are more engaging (hah) than ever before. They're introduced pretty early on and re-fought over the course of multiple maps, letting them develop and be their own characters much more than most FE villains. A villain feels a lot more real when they've been messing with you for like 5 maps now, rather than encountering each of them once and instantly beating them, or only seeing them in cutscenes before the singular battle with them. They're also elevated further by the Emblem system and the introduction of revival stones as a mechanic, but I'll mention those later. In exchange for putting more focus on the villains and the overarching themes of the story, the individual character development for your units besides the handful of main lords falls short. If you want to engage with a character, you have to do it through their supports, since they won't get any spotlight outside of their join chapter. I personally don't mind this as much, but I get why some people dislike it. Engage is cheesy a lot of the time, but I think it's a good kind of cheesy. It gave me a lot of Tokusatsu/Magical Girl vibes with the way it very obviously and clearly wears its themes on its sleeve. The game straight up having an animated transformation sequence with a catchphrase for Engaging à la sailor moon/power rangers? The simple "good triumphs over evil" story then fittingly feeling like a classic superhero cartoon as well as being in direct contrast to the themes of the previous game? It's incredibly camp, but it's also just so fun and charming. I can't help but love a game that so openly and genuinely revels in this kind of childlike joy and the idea of hope in the indomitable human spirit always winning out in the end. Now, to say something negative that sadly hurts both of these great games, and even more others: Both Engage and 3H suffer from one thing that drags down both of the stories imo. And it's... customization. To be precise; a customizeable protagonist. And it's not only those two. All FEs with custom protags have suffered for it and, hell, even outside of FE this is a problem. When your main character is intended as a blank slate player self-insert, it often leads to them not being allowed to be a real character. Because what if Player A wouldn't act like that? What if Player B wouldn't say that? What if Player C wouldn't make this or that choice? Now, I think Awakening and Engage handled this problem the best, with Fates being pretty bad about it, but 3H handling it a lot worse than either of them. The 3Ds (and technically prior, with Kris and Mark lol) games had the "advantage" of not being voiced in that regard. When Robin/Corrin doesn't talk, it's not a big deal, since nobody talks. It's all text. 3H, being the first fully voiced FE with a customizeable protagonist, made the baffling decision to keep Byleth completely and utterly silent. But not only silent in voice, but also almost entirely silent in conversations in general. For the vast majority of everything happening on-screen, Byleth is just standing there, silently nodding along and sometimes being given anywhere between 1-3 non-voiced dialogue options that don't change anything. Character interactions are 3H's strong suit... except anytime anyone is interacting with Byleth. The conversations come to a screeching halt and turn from real dialogues into a Dora the Explorer-esque "talk-to-the-person-behind-the-screen" type of deal. Any character talking with Byleth feels incredibly forced. Like they're being held hostage by the game and made to talk to this cardboard wall that only gives completely non-answer one liners as responses. This is also the biggest problem with the story, that Byleth is in it. I genuinely think the game would've benefited from Byleth actually dying at the end of the monastery section... or just not having them exist in the first place. Just let the three lords be the protagonists of the story, they already are anyway. Engage also does this, but to a much lesser degree. Firstly because Alear is also fully voiced, thank god! Alear being voiced and not having dialogue options, but rather having regular dialogue, means that they're much more of a real character than Byleth. Secondly, because the game doesn't take itself as seriously as 3H does. Alear is still a pretty non-commital, standard "option A" character, but this works better here because Alear plays the straight man to the much more wacky and silly cast of Engage. They're pretty much the only normal person in the army, which makes their usually boring and generic blank slate personality less of a problem and more of a character trait specific to only them. Alear is almost a proper full character already... now please stop letting us name our protagonists in future games. I'm tired of hearing "Professor!" or "Divine One!" Just give them a set name and let the others say it, please, I am begging on my knees here.

  • Honestly fire emblem engage makes me cringe alot just watching it as a 20 year old it seems childish alot of the time unlike to others in the franchise which makes me really want to get a switch lite and fire emblem three houses it's more my style and it's not childish after watching it but il give a chance to engage after getting three houses and dose anyone agree

  • Its classic revamped Fe in engage and you get an immense story with much better characters in three houses. The payoff is greater with three houses because you literally grow with your characters

  • The difference is with three houses the story is really good and the combat is still good enough but.... with engage the combat is really good but.. the story is really really bad and makes it for some and me not being able to even beat the game...

  • Both great games. Engage is more the essence of fire emblem distilled. Three houses is more experimental and brings something new. Both deserved to be enjoyed.

  • If you don’t want to go through a slog for the first half of the game, go with Engage. If you don’t want to be bogged down by a terrible story, go with Three Houses.

  • If you want the best possible intro to Fire Emblem absolutely Three Houses. It’s better in every way except gameplay and graphics. Art style is another thing. I love both but Three Houses is a clear league above in terms of story. Engage is better for veterans

    • @@nemesis8508 That Three Houses is the best possible intro into Fire Emblem. I would even say it's one of the *worst* possible intros into the franchise, because it (alongside maybe Echoes) are pretty much the biggest outliers in terms of how mechanics work. If you start with Three Houses, really like it and then want more of that, you're out of luck, because none of the other FEs are even remotely close to being like 3H. Thanks to FE changing it up a lot with each new entry, this is true to a certain degree with _any_ game in the series, but 3H changes up many of the more core ideas that are present in a vast majority of the games. To make a comparison here, it'd be like saying Spiderman 2099 is the best possible entry for someone looking to get into Spiderman. 2099, like 3H, is great on its own, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone just starting out the series because of how different it is. Miguel O'Hara is a Spiderman just like how 3H is a Fire Emblem.

    • @@skeletonwar4445 I have to agree with this. Three Houses is so radically different to the rest of the series, both in story tone and gameplay, that starting with it might leave you confused if you try to play any other entry. The closest thing to "getting more of 3H" is Warriors Three Hopes, and that's a Musou spinoff.

  • I really think if you have to debate an older game vs new game then it’s kinda obvious that the older game might be lil better…and honestly FE community kinda asked for engage wanted a traditional fe and devs listened I just hope that the next fe game has the story of 3h and the gameplay of engage

  • If you're in for the gameplay and want to challenge yourself, go with Engage. The game was so fun to play, it was amazing... and you can skip the cutscenes, i mean... the story and the characters, no matter how incredibly annoying both aspects are... you can completely ignore them, that's what i did after i finished the game once and frankly... i even felt like wasting my time on my first playthrough. If you're in for a good story and AMAZING characters with... ok gameplay, go for Three Houses. What's better? A game with good story, amazing characters and ok gameplay or a game with phenomenal gameplay, awful story and boring characters? I know my answer, but people should decide for themselves

  • For a newcomer I'd say Three houses is better in every way besides graphics. Engage has tighter gameplay and back to the roots with the triangle, but the story, soundtrack, characters and not too difficult gameplay is perfect for a newcomer in three houses. Also the replay value in three houses is insane! and once you have become good enough, maddening difficulty is there as well. It's a complete package! Engage is more like a one and done, it's good, but not on par with three houses I'd say.
