Broken Pair of Antique Forks Restoration and Pork Belly Test
The fork was introduced to Europe in the 10th century by Theophanu Byzantine wife of Emperor Otto the 2nd. It made its way to Italy by the 11th century and had become popular amongst merchants by the 14th. When the fork was first introduced as an eating implement it was normal for people to have their own knife and fork made which would be kept in a special box called a cadena, whenever someone threw a dinner party or a feast all the guests would bring their own cadenas to eat with. This custom was then introduced to France in the entourage of Catherine de’Medici.
Forks, however, never really caught on in Britain. Whilst our European cousins were tucking in with their new eating irons the British simply laughed at this ‘feminine affectation’ of the Italians, British men would eat with their fingers and were proud! What’s more, even the church was against the use of forks (despite them being in the Bible)! Some writers for the Roman Catholic Church declared it an excessive delicacy, God in his wisdom had provided us with natural forks, in our fingers, and it would be an insult to him to substitute them for these metallic devices. Eventually we caught on around about the 18th century about the same time that the curved, four tined variety became popular after its development in Germany.

Any idea what the forks were made of? (What kind of metal?)
Not really, but I think some percentage of silver is in there. They don't rust as easily as other metals from that era.@@janvafa9959
Truly love the extra touch of the hand washing basins and the coffee or tea in the morning!
Awesome, that is great to hear. Thank you kindly!
Gotta hand it to u, the camera works is a masterpiece. u r telling a lot more just with interesting camera angles that also feels cinematic. The production quality is top notch for sure 💯

Hey, thanks a lot Adrian 😊👍 I appreciate that! Greetings from Norway 👋😄
Parabéns meu amigo seus vídeos são ótimos e as suas restaurações são excelente ê muito bom poder acompanhar o seu trabalho um abraço.
🙏🙏🙏🙏👋😀👍🤗
very good work, the bone handle has come out really well and looks perfect for the old fork, and I have to add the workshop just gets better and better with the new additions you have added, that along with the morning tea and newspaper was a great touch adding to the period feel of the process. The video production is probably your best video to date with the extra part showing the forks and old knives in action so to speak and that pork looked really tasty lol, well done for continuing to push your boundaries and grow your skillset, I watched one of your early video's again the other day and the comparison to this one is night and day different
I don't know what to say, you know me so well. Nothing strange since you watched all my videos and followed my progress. Nonetheless, you pointed out and shared your knowledge multiple times that also helped to shape my skillset. So, I want to thank you from bottom of my heart for being there for me and helping me grow this channel. I hope you are proud of that and I hope we continue this wonderful journey 🙏 Stay safe!

Old Newspaper, Perfect Workshop, and Magnificent Menu 🍀🍀🍀
Many thanks, you are the best ☺️
Great video. Love the turn of the last century setting, tools, atmosphere. Must have been hard to get all those old muscle powered tools. I happen to have some old school tools like hand powered drills myself. R eally great video, not just the restoration, but also the historical representation of what everyday life used to be like.
Glad you enjoyed sir. Yeah, it took me many years to get here. You feedback is highly appreciated! Again, thank you so much 🙏
I love the atmosphere and of course admire your skills. Awesome work as always. 👍🏻😅
Waited a while but worth it. Fascinated by all those old tools and machines. Brilliant work and to top it all . Roast belly pork and the crackling superb . Someone else said where's the gravy. I agree lol 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for patience and kind words. I appreciate that. The reason is embarrassing, I'm missing the appropriate plate for the time period 🙈
The atmosphere in your shop is wonderful. Great craftmanship per usual! cheers mate

@@FFD_Restorations you have a lot of new additions in your shop. They look great. And, another fantastic restoration. 😊

Not the men thinking using the fork was effeminate ahahhahaha😂😂😂
😅
What's make you choose between oxalyc acid and vinegar ? I noticed sometimes you used one, sometimes the other... :)
Oxalic acid attacks rust only, while vinegar is more aggressive. Healthwise, vinegar is better option. I do not recommend use of oxalic acid since it can be really dangerous if not used correctly.
Thanks for your answer @@FFD_Restorations😉

What is the machine for with all the numbers in it?just curious
It looks like an early adding machine.
It is a currency exchange machine 😅
@@FFD_RestorationsAh well. Not a bad guess. I'm into slide rules. There are some nice 19th century examples of those.
Great video and restoration! A nice, crusty pork belly, with carrots and potatoes, tomatoes and gherkins on the side, now that's dinner!
Much appreciated 😊👍
I have been looking for some forks like these and here you have two, you have all the luck. LOL
I was fortunate to grab them really. They are hard to find. Hope you will be lucky as well 🤞
Quite fitting ~ an antique styled workshop where 2 antique forks are restored, Victorian period? The only electric things are the studio lighting and the camera
Thank you kindly 🤗 I believe they are, although I haven't found any stamps on them.
I had to chuckle when I read, "and test," in the title. I figured it meant you would take them for a test snack.
😁👍
Those forks reminds me about Dinglehopper from Little Mermaid, it shapes like a Trident.
😅👍👍👍

Ahhh… so the different handles were to indicate what the forks were to be used on? Or was it to indicate the owner?
I like your way of thinking. Unfortunately, they are just two different forks! I don't have any background story that could confirm that. Sorry!
Как я не знал об этом канале? Это просто улёт! Крутоо

In Perrault's Sleeping Beauty there were cadena made of gold for each invited fairy - but the fairy who cursed the royal daughter was snubbed, for they did not know if she was alive to invite her. Her cadena was made of mis-matched pieces, and the curse was partly for the insult. Random trivia aside: wonderful work!
