In my opinion, the more peculiar or characteristic thing of Scottish people is the Scottish English accent. That's why in my experience have been very difficult to progress in my comunication. By the way, I loved this video, and it has been nice hearing people talking about different subjects. I have learned a lot of vocabulary. I will follow up now!

How many hours does it take to take a train to Glasgow or Edinburgh...(the Athens of the North), one of the most beautiful and most historical cities? the UK. If you're living in Liverpool or Manchester, it's as far as it is to London. The fact that Scots are regarded by some as being "tight" is rubbish...there more generous than the average Londoner. This is coming from the past when Scotland was very poor compared to England, and they simply took care of the money they had. Actually I think the Scots are mostly closer to the Irish.

She's never made derogatory comments about English as a people. Her "crime" is to stand up for the interests of Scottish people. To take us from a situation where we have negligible influence in government, to have our own government instead. English people are deeply offended by this because they view not being in control of Scotland has a insult to them. At least that's the only takeaway I can get since, you guys hated her predecessor, and her successor, just as much. • Again and again it's weird to me (a German) to see British people who have never been to a particular part or in general other parts of the UK. I have been to different parts like Edinburgh, York, Hadrian's Wall, Lake District for a day, Birmingham, Bristol, Colchester, Brighton and a little tour around Wales with Cardiff, Swansea, Abergavenny, Barminster, Criccieth, Llangollen and the Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa, as I should say now). How come people I met in the past 30+ years who were British have not been around like that. I feel bad for not having been to Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Cornwall, any of the islands, or the Highlands or Northern Ireland yet but I'm just German/an anglophile visitor. They are Brits born and bred and sometimes have seen less than me. That is so weird. When I was little my parents took me and my brother to different places in Germany so that we know what our country looks like in different regions. And what we didn't manage to see then, I went to see later. There are still towns and cities I haven't seen, but at least I've been to every region. I can't understand this attitude of "no, sadly I've never been there (but I am also not really intererested in changing that)" and the speaker is around 60 - 65 years old. What are they doing with their lives?

  • There are a lot of ironies regarding the English stereotypical view of Scottish people, and make no mistake those stereotypical views are ages old and mostly meant to be derogatory. (1) Scotland is full of kilt wearers - The irony of this statement is that a brand new kilt package can cost anywhere between £295 and upwards of £1000. It is highly unlikely that all Scots are walking around in this highly expensive gear, and it is questionable just how many English people that make this claim could themselves afford a brand new kilt package. (2) All Scots eat Haggis - The irony of this statement is that a lot of Scots one day of each year actually do celebrate Burns night by having a Burns Supper. A Burns Supper is traditionally served up with a dram of Scotch Whisky, or even Whisky added to the Haggis as a Whisky sauce part of the cooking. Now the cheapest bottle of Scotch Whisky you will find from Asda comes in at around £7 for a bottle of McKendrick's, and that is just for a 70cl bottle. It is highly unlikely that all Scots are having Burns Suppers everyday, and it is questionable just how many English people could afford to celebrate Burns night on a daily basis. (3) Scots call eachother Jimmy - The irony of this statement is that it is totally untrue. The Scottish variant for the Hebrew name James, is in fact Jamie, and Jimmy is actually the English variant. It is possible that the misconception arose from the fact that Scots may have at one time greeted English people by referring to them as Jimmy, and this would be because so many English people were called Jimmy. Even the most famous people in Britain from recent times named Jimmy are English in origins. Jimmy Savile, Jimmy Greaves, just to name two. The list goes on. (4) All Scots go around saying "Och Aye the Noo". - The irony of this statement is that there are many English areas where people really do go around over using phrases which can be used to identify them, such as the Liverpudlian "aright la", or the Geordie "way I mon", or the Yorkshire "get t brew on" or any one of many cockney rhyming slang, but it quite simply is not true that any Scot has ever used the phrase "och aye the noo". In fact, the only people ever in this world to use the phrase "och aye the noo" are English people when mocking the Scots. (5) All Scots play bagpipes - The irony of this statement is that bagpipes are amongst the most expensive musical instruments you could possibly find. A brand new set of bagpipes would cost you anywhere between £600 and £8000. It is highly unlikely that all Scots own a set of Bagpipes, and it is questionable whether or not a set of Bagpipes is an item which many English people could afford to keep in their bedrooms. (6) Scotland is full of degeneratives that all eat deep fried mars bars and drink Buckfast. - The irony of this statement is that it mostly refers to the people of Scotland's most poverty stricken and deprived areas. Now a set of four mars bars costs £1.65 at Asda, and the cheapest bottle of Buckfast you will find online is a 75cl bottle at £7.50. Now not only are those lowest denomination of Scots spending £1.65 for four mars bars, but in addition to this they are actually frying them, which has the added cost of purchasing vegetable oil. The cheapest bottle of vegetable oil is £1.75 at Asda. Now, even English people will have to admit that this must just be something those poverty stricken Scots are eating and drinking as snacks, as doctors and scientists would agree that it would not be possible for them to only live on deep fried mars bars and buckfast. So this is something those Scots are enjoying between meals. So, here again, it is highly unlikely that Scotland's lowest denomination of citizens are living such a luxurious lifestyle that they are able to afford such luxurious snacks on a daily basis. It is also highly questionable whether or not most English people that are from council estates could afford to snack like this on a daily basis. As a lot of Scots will be able to attest, the first thing that is likely to happen when they get off a train at Liverpool Lime Street or Manchester Piccadilly, is that they are liable to be approached by a Liverpudlian/Scouser/Scally or Mancunian/Manc asking them if they have a spare ciggy, before proceeding to ask them for a light. I am sure many English people can also attest that this claim is factually true. This gives one the impression that those council estate types from Liverpool and Manchester "are not" feasting on deep fried Mars bars in between main courses, and "are not" washing it down with Buckfast on a daily basis. (6) All Scots are tight. - The irony of this is what? They spend up to £1000 on kilts, They wash down Haggis with Scotch Whisky every night, They all have bagpipes worth upto £8000 in their bedrooms, and even their poorest citizens add additional ingredients to Mars bars, washed down with Buckfast on a daily basis between meals, and they are told they are tight if they do not give English people a ciggy or a light? Do English people realise based upon their own stereotypical views of Scots, just how much Scots must be puting in to society in the way of tax?

  • As a Scottish person The English aren’t all bad but there are some who really piss me off I have English friends I don’t mind the country I just hate how they in the past took over Northern Ireland and Scotland and after they let India and America go they kept us, the brexit vote was rigged because of the amount of English people in comparison to us scots and it may seem like the votes are from Scotland but the votes for leaving the eu were English people in scotland

  • Okay! Not a good start..."what the British people think of the Scots". I thought we were British?! (After all we made Britian!) Do you mean English (as your title says)? This video just highlights why a lot of Scottish folk want to be independent. Billy Connolly - anywhere else in the world he is an instantly recognisable figure - everywhere except it seems in England, really shocking. Show a picture of the very unfunny Michael McIntyre and they would pick it up straight away. Perhaps this shows a mental bias against the Scots by the English. It is not as if Billy Connolly was an obscure person!
