What Is The Flipper Zero? Why You Might Not Need One.
The Flipper Zero is a gadget that transmit signals it transmit over radio frequencies, NFC tags, RFID and infrared to name a few. The website flipperzero.one/ calls the Flipper Zero: "a portable multi-tool for pentesters and geeks in a toy-like body" and that covers it pretty well!

Way to stay in the center of the the issues here! Tech is not inherently good or bad. It's what the user is doing with it. Reverse engineering is what makes better future engineers. Cheers and 73!
Thanks!

These types of devices are good because they highlight vulnerabilities in other devices, which should make manufacturers improve security in the long run.
I think that is a forlorn hope. I refer you to the LockPicking Lawyer channel. He shows the inadequacies of locks over and over. Yet the manufacturers continue to produce them, without changes.
@@Bugkiller991 they sometimes do implement changes, but mostly for more expensive models, though i have to admit that here in belgium the last year or 2 most of the locks i encountered that were new from the shop didn't have the same easy vulnerabilities as the same type of lock from before that period. This made me wonder if it was just random bad luck(not every lock produced from a certain model is exactly the same, i've had had locks that i bought more than 1 from the same model at the same time and even though the keys looked alike it was impossible to open one of them while raking whilst the others opened in less than a second with the same method) or if maybe they would've made improvements to it.
KM6ARC 43 years old and found a flipper zero. I got the wifi module to learn some more stuff. Glad there's a ham presence with these cool modern uses of spectrum.
I've always been interested in reverse engineering things. Mainly mechanical things because I don't need a bunch of meters and oscilliscopes to understand it. I actually am into radios and such, so I am curious about reverse engineering them. I may get a flipper some day.
The beauty of it is like the beauty of a Leatherman. Carrying a Proxmark, Rubberducky, universal remote, HackRF One, and Arduino with power supply separately is heavy and inconvenient, that's why I have one. People paying a Grand for one have no idea what it even does, which is pretty hysterical.
I love my flipper. Sure mostly what I use it for functionally I could do with other devices… but it’s fun.
I got my flipper zero, quite easily, got shipped in a week. I found a morse code feature which would be great for someone learning cw. We found the music player feature and play some music occasionally. Obviously it sounds horrible but it's fun to mess with. I do have almost all the ir remotes for our multiple TVs programmed. I even went to the club site and showed the club president the cool device, and he liked it. The community behind it is pretty cool with all the codes you can download from internet. It's a fun little toy to have and play around with. I would recommend picking one up if you can.

Great vid hosh! love the way you laid out it's capabilities, legalities, and what it can't do.
Thank you!
Great primer/explanation on the capabilities of this fun device! Having lots of fun with mine.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love mine. It's just another multitool in my ever-expanding tool kit - built to do just what it does, but with a little tinkering, can do so much more.
I'm in some of these forums and you just KNOW it's full of tictok influenced teens. The majority of the posts are "it shipped!, how do I change the animations, how do I open a telsa charge port, and cases to be 3D printed" WOW! They have NO IDEA how powerful lets say something like Bad USB is (I think the most powerful) I mean, you can carry like a hundred or more different custom payloads on one simple to use digital interface. I'm an IT guy so this would be a time saving tool for me. Most just don't want to make an effort to learn more about it. If they do it will be quite rewarding!
@@bairfreedom a lot of people on those groups post those photos without doing any other research, namely searching their questions in the group. Not only that, but like you said, a lot of people are using it to gain views on social media for things like opening a Tesla charge port....which auto closes after a minute or two anyway.

One thing that I find very useful is testing RFID/NFC blockers actually work. Many wallets and card holders advertise that they protect you from being scanned but a device like this allows you to test and confirm it is doing the job. Taking this a bit farther, you can copy all your cards that have RFID/NFC data and leave your wallet at home, use your flipper for replay only when needed, you cannot scan what is not there. On the other hand, this leaves you open to physical theft since the flipper will have all your data. Pick your poison.
If you want to test it ..use your phone
@@elischarutzler6757 ?
@@lazerninjaxxx7969 Most phones allow to read and write NFC cards. So to test your blocker...a phone would also work. A phone has actually a shit ton of possibilities comparing with such a device. But you would have to jailbreak it most of the times
A flipper will not retrieve all the information needed for an in person relay. There are only a few websites that allow you to forgo some of the info that the flipper doesn’t obtain
@@elischarutzler6757 You don't need to jailbreak an android phone to write NFC cards, it been a thing for a long time. iPhone it's also no longer necessary as a few full apps support it now on iPhone.

Been having a blast with my Flipper Zero. The GPIO function exposes some amazing functionality. I have used the Sentry Safe bypass and it works flawlessly. This device has rekindled my interest in hardware/software interfaces. I hooked up an RSP32 and been playing with it. Put Marauder on one for Wifi stuff and now playing with some other possibilities. I have some NRF24 modules coming so I can play with some of the 2.4ghz stuff. These are a lot of fun if you are into that sort of thing. All that being said be sure to use caution with these. It is possible to accidently interfere with essential equipment like medical devices. While the FCC may not be chasing every fool that misbehaves with a Baofeng I don't think you will get the same level of disinterest if you start changing the price of unleaded on the gas station sign. Have fun but stay legal folks.
I''m thinking of getting one and would love your input for a beginner.
Please forward for educational purposes how to change gas prices for educational purposes only

Man what a way to describe the nail, position, and hammer of what people see, expect, and receive. This device isn't a Swiss army knife for any electronics hacking wireless transmissions. Instead It's used for simplifying life in one area for developers or maybe some consumers. Letting new programmers have an easy for program developing using the on board features. As well as expanding the capability of sensors, chip programming, and other diy devices to be programmed or utilized in a small form factor. The forgotten part of the device though is much simpler than It's capabilities. In the field of private security development, you can program this device with many different attack methods to attack your specific security device protocol. Whether it be Wi-Fi, RFID, NFC, WPS, IR, Photocentric (photodiodes, photoresistors, phototransistors, and photovoltaic light sensors), Thermal sensors, and ANY OTHER DEVICE/SENSOR YOU CONNECT. This device is similar to math. You solve for an equation and the device lets you prove your solution. The equation being a security risk and the solution being, well- the solution. Then proven against multiple attacking methods developed by you and the public to test the solved equation.
Well said.
The black cased version was from the folks that contributed to the kickstarter. In the consumer market you’ll mostly find the white cased version.

I should get myself one for the nostalgia I have a casio watch that has a universal tv remote, it doesn't work with any tv build after 2005-ish but when I was 13 years old I would start the tv in my classroom any chance I'll get, no one ever told the teachers and it made me popular for an entire week.
I'm a trouble shooter and I think it would be cool to keep all my stuff on one of these to use like keys etc. There is a model of car, mabe more than one, that if the fob dies, there is an RFID chip in the fob that will allow you to start the car by placing the fob up to the start button or somewhere on the dash area etc. that would technically not use a code. It would use the RFID tag in the dash which cannot be rolling because the fobs battery is technically dead. The only way I could see that it is keeping up with the rolling part is if that little boost of electricity that the fob uses from the cars RFID reader magnetic field keeps it is sync. I do not think it does. I grabbed the wrong set of keys one day and was able to start my car with a dead fob that has no battery that has been sitting in a drawer for over a year. So use the flipper to copy the RFID tag INSTEAD of emulating the fob signal. Bam! your driving your car with the flipper. The door unlock signal on the other hand is the part I believe that gets people into trouble with bricking their fobs. Lol
Very informative. Thanks!
Nice Lucha! I EDC mine with my flipper too.
I think, Rolling Code will be my next project when I receive my Flipper Zero. it will be a fun addition to my TensorFlow Object/License plate Recognition garage door opener that I build with an old Raspberry Pi 3B and a camera.
Is the frequency analyzer only a feature available with the unleashed firmware or does it come stock on the flipper? Looking to also see if I can just use this for mine and my wife's remote car starter or if they are also usually rolling codes
The stock firmware has a frequency analyzer.
Many of my non-radio friend have one... yet I do not. Hope I can get one at some point though!
Got my order in this evening. Didn't know about the flipper one, though I assume it'll be a bit more expensive. Might get flipper one when it comes out if I like the Zero. GPIO makes the zero about as powerful as the ARM cortex chip on it, the flipper one with it's SOC will be able to do a lot of stuff much faster probably.
we have a long while till the flipper one comes out tbh

I would say use common sense and this will be a great tool in life. I dont see any reason for this being illegal since there is thousands of things out on the electronics market that can do all of the things the flipper does.
I have the the sub ghz card on the way for me... helps a lot with range on the sub ghz side.
@10:50 ... there is still a lot of garage doors, access doors, etc. with fix code ... therefore device like this is handy to demonstrate it and prove that upgrade to rolling code system is reasonable request.
thx for explaining!
What is that keypad that is shown near the end of the video? The one with the green text on its screen.
My flipperzero shows up tomorrow if USPS is accurate. Looking forward to experimenting around, heck I’ve already recognized I’ll need to familiarize myself with git. This led me into the m5stack/stick line of controllers and now I’m waiting on a couple of those too. -73
How long did it take them to ship it out after ordering? FedEx International customer so hopefully I get mine within 2 weeks.
They had a tracking number attached to my order in four days. USPS took another 11, but I’ll cut em some slack considering Christmas and the polar tornado HIHI

I've got one. Lovely little gadget. Unfortunately, there's been changes in the firmware and functionality between the white and black, some features have been removed. Something I would like to see is some sort of security on these things, as in a PIN number or Bluetooth connection to a recognised device to unlock it. If you've got a lot of info stored on it and it gets lost/stolen, the data on it useless without it being unlocked.
What sort of things can you do on it besides copying and emulating rfid and nfc frequencies
where did you got it? in Europe is so hard to find it
what are a few differences between the white cased flipper and the black cased flipper
Lol. I have a relative that pulls those pranks. He listens to the Tesla owner and his friend arguing about closing the charge port.😆
I want a straight IR remote I can stick a ssd in to "program" with a text file. That is, where something like the Flipper Zero is doing the harder work of figuring out "what the code is", but some way to turn around and fix a sea of $10 remotes to blast their IR code a little fiercer and do things the original remotes never did. Like crossing home automation and AV control, etc.
I dont know if i cant make a exact replica as flip 0 but the emulate radio wave is interesting.
I should have watched this before ordering mine. I work at several apartment complexes and they won't provide me with a gate opener, so I was hoping to use it to make access a little quicker and easier. Oh well.. I guess it could still be used for a little fun...
I’m in school for cyber security and am delving further into the IT world so I picked one up to play with.
I'm late to this party but I was searching today for somebody who would tell me what this thing is without being a clown and/or hype machine. Thank you.
Thanks!
I could see using this to try to ensure the security of my devices. I mean it's scary that they can be used wrong and it makes it more accessible but you can also learn to make things more secure.
Strongly considered the idea for my garage door. My garage is from the early 90s so likely has no rolling code protection and as of right now we've maxed out the number of keys that can be linked to it. It only accepts 4 keys but we have 5 cars. Because of it I was the unlucky one and need to use the key pad to open it, but my mother feeds animals in our front yard and I don't like the idea of standing there as a dear walks up to me. Being able to mimic one of the keys would be incredibly convenient. The only other thing I'd use it for is as a backup key for a hotel. Going with the family on trips usually means only 2 keys but 4 or 5 people. At the last place I went to they even had a two door entrance so I wouldn't even be able to knock the door to let me back in. Many hotels are switching to NFC so it's a fairly useful idea.
If you have to pair an opener remote, it's got rolling codes.
I bought one for $169 because i have tons of rfid stuff that i want stored on a singular device so its easier for me and i want a universal remote for any tv anytime too. Like a sonic screwdriver lol
For someone who is interesting in pursuing cyber security, do you think this would be good to use as a learning device? Like say, I was to code my own little hacks, could I use it as a learning experience?
Sure. Also the bad usb is cool to script with.
Can it pick off mall radios for analog and digital communications???
Saying it's a replay device is vastly underestimating the device's strength. It has a ton of logic and can do things like run scripts, analyze spectra, and many other things. It's not just a "replay" device.
Ordered one today I just want to learn about these
Loving my FlipperZero. Got one a few weeks ago. Have made backups for everything in my house that it can interface with. The infrared part is very useful. At work we have many models of TV's in conf rooms in many buildings. Now I can carry them all in one device instead of having to track them all down. Just one aspect that makes this device useful day to day. Very interesting stuff especially once you start playing with the firmware available in the community. As I was typing this, UPS delivered the WiFi dev board so now I have more things to test on it tonight. Love your vids Josh :) 73!
There are older phone models with IR and new Chinese phones with it, and the RFID is also on most phones as well.
@@the_mariocrafter FYI phones have NFC which is not the same as RFID. NFC is a different frequency than RFID and phones can't work with that. Very similar in how they appear to work but different frequencies and payloads and as such not compatible. As for IR, yeah I happen to have one of those old phones but not useful for just that feature as it doesn't work as a phone on modern carriers. The flipper brings together many different tools into one device. Useful to some but not as much for others.
How much does it cost after taxes ?

Will it let you download various signals from the internet to play? I've got this electric fireplace that I lost the remote for years ago, and it would be awesome if I could find something that would be able to function as a replacement. In addition to all the other cool things the Flipper does. I suppose I could also try going to the store and copying the remote signal from one of the floor models and see if that works. I haven't been able to find just the remotes for sale anywhere. As for the IR stuff, LG phones used to be able to do that. I have one that is couple years old that still does. It's great being able to control TVs in waiting rooms or at hotels.

Can also use the flipper as a POCSAG compatible pager via one of the apps and the default frequency is of course none other than DAPNET (Decentralized Amateur Paging Network). Unfortunately I haven't had much luck with it due to the lack of amateur radio operators using transmitters connected to the dapnet in my area. Personally I use my flipper mostly for infrared and the occasional sub gigahertz.
