Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is among the busiest airport in the world, but the city that it is in, Amsterdam is not even in the top 10 most populated cities in Europe, yet the airport manage to have millions of passengers every year competing with massive cities like London and Paris.

This sounds like an AI trying to construct a script.
An American accent using the metric system. Not unheard of but c'mon. We ain't fancy lol yeah I think it's AI which I'm past being sick of
Saying that Paris only has 2M people is like counting only the population of central London
It's the same for saying Amsterdam has 800,000 people. It has, but the surrounding area has about 1,5
London is still Larger than Paris even if you include it's metropolitan population. When it was part of the EU, London was the largest urban area in the EU
@@dredits6658 Actually it depends on the metrics. According to the OECD Paris is 500k larger, but then Eurostar says London is 2M larger. Either way, the difference is insignificant compared to the 4x difference the video implies.
@@MrStino1 Yeah… it’s absurd. The Dutch government could hypothetically expand the Amsterdam city limits to include the whole country if they wanted to. However that wouldn’t mean the city is now suddenly 18M
Used to fly via AMS and its a great airport for traveling. This video has a few misses. First Netherlands is in Schengen and many people outside Amsterdam will go to other countries to fly such as Brussels. Next as part of KLM is their partnership with Delta airlines. Delta has turned Amsterdam into a massive hub and has flights to Amsterdam throughout the US. Given its geography Amsterdam is a great connecting airport for North American travelers going to Europe, Africa, and even certain parts of Asia.
Many aspects are missing.... it has very good train connection means that many people even from Belgium or Germany are going here to depart/arrive... Netherlands has a very well established international conference infrastructure. There are sometimes corporate conferences/trainings with hundreds of participants. The Netherlands is a very busy international business hub, many companies have European HQ here and business people travel a lot to here/ from here...
This video just repeats the same thing over and over in slightly different ways LOL 😅
Fun Fact für Schiphol and KLM: The king of the netherland has a commercial pilot licence and he flies minimum twice a month as a copilot the keep his licence. So when you are flying with KLM from or to schiphol there is a chance the king is in the cockpit. :-)
What's also important is you can get a train from most of the country which terminate at the airport. You can't really do that in the UK.
Schipol and Paris are also used as transit airports by UK passengers from airports that are too close to London to have flights to London such as Cardiff, Bristol, Southampton and Norwich.
if we had a good rail service, people in those cities could get to the london airports within an hour. that’s a big customer base heathrow is losing out to

It would have made more sense to compare London, Amsterdam and Paris population using the metropolitan region. It's not fair comparison due to administrative reasons for example, the Paris metropolitan region has a population of over 10 million
You r right! Paris suburb is 12 millions people, and serve 25 millions within 1 hour driving or train connection. I think its the same with London metropolitan.
When I saw the traffic statistics and the population number of Amsterdam I thought, How???
Amsterdam is a city not a metropole. It is part of the Randstad metro area ( roughly Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht) with 8 mln people . Just like San Francisco has just 800k inhabitants , but the Bay Area 9 mln ...
They forgot to mention that the agglomeration of Amsterdam is much bigger than 800k inhabitants, plus the WHOLE COUNTRY uses Schiphol airport. London has like 3? International airports..
Wait till you look at Atlanta (47k pop vs 110M passengers)
Amsterdam really serves the whole randstad region (and you can argue the whole country) since Schiphol has flights the other airports in NL doesn’t. Btw the randstad region is 9 million people and includes Rotterdam. It’s about the same land area as the London metro but has more farm land seperating the urban areas.
Exactly. De Randstad is a metropolitan area which covers (most of) the western part of the country. For the rest of the country, it depends which airport is closer. It’s sometimes more convenient to either travel to Brussels or the airports near Düsseldorf or Cologne/Bonn. The video makes it sound like Amsterdam is The Hub for The Netherlands and that’s simply not true for various reasons.
For me, Amsterdam is maybe the least interesting place in the Netherlands. It's beautiful but I really love other Dutch cities. I spent a week in Enschede earlier in the year and loved it. We went to Friesland too and it was beautiful. If I ever had to leave Australia (my home), I would definitely choose to live in the Netherlands.
Id live there just for the kronic weed
Cause everyone always goes to the city centre. Whenever people I know come to visit Amsterdam, I’ll let the, visit the touristy places on their own, but give them a proper city tour myself showing all the real cool spots
It is. Also many anti-car, pro-bike supporters all use Amsterdam as a great example of urban cycling while local Dutch citizens even despise Amsterdam as for them it severely lacks necessary bike infrastructure to the point that some German cities like Aachen are more bike-friendly than Amsterdam
@@Kuricang31 When was the last time you cycled through Amsterdam? Yes there were some troublesome streets in the past but right now I can’t think of any dangerous spots+ it is still improving year by year
You should live in de Bijlmer area in the South East of Amsterdam very friendly and safe area you’ll fit right in
France is not "in the top 5" of the most visited countries in Europe, it's #1, with Paris being the most visited city in Europe and London coming in 2nd. Plus both CDG and AMS serve not only their respective cities but the metros surounding them ,so that's 11 millions people for Paris and 2,5 for Amsterdam ,which are the numbers that should be used here since you are referring to Greater London.
London, United Kingdom - 19.6 million visitors yearly. Paris, France - 19.1 million visitors yearly. Istanbul, Turkey-14.7 million visitors yearly. Rome, Italy-10.3 million visitors yearly. London is first.
#1 is in the top 5

People in the Netherlands don't fly domestically. They take the train.
not sure where this data is from, but much is inaccurate. Firstly, "there arer no airports in the north of the netherlands". Groningen airport hosts international flights daily. The list goes on..
These "educational" youtubers are only good for entertainment purposes at best. I usually just watch em for their opinions rather than facts. Unfortunately, even channels like Wendover, RealLifeLore, Johnny Harris, etc often post false info.

I fly KLM a lot and it always strikes me how many passengers are non-Dutch transit passengers. Many Scandinavians travel within Europe with KLM over Schiphol airport Same for British and East Europeans. And obviously the inter continental travelers to literally ALL continents. When a plane is delayed the crew always announces the transit passengers' connecting flights and gates. That's when I notice the diversity of passengers on board.
To be fair the Amsterdam metropolitan area (and in extension the whole Randstad which is at most 40 minutes away by train) has a lot more people living there together. People outside of Randstad generally drive a car instead of taking the train.
Nice video. Please do a similar video of why Dublin's airport services much more people that the total population of Ireland (at least, it has at some point processed upto 32m passengers) while greater Dublin is not upto 3m inhabitants and the Republic of Ireland is not upto 6m inhabitants
Wow, that's a lot more than Dublin. For like quintuplin. 😄
Eindhoven airport has many low cost routes all across Europe, in addition, both Eindhoven and Rotterdam have charter flights during summer. Main reason for why AMS is so busy is many connections and transit passengers who don't even leave the airport
I went to Europe on a trip in high school. We flew into Gatwick, south of London. I had no idea it existed until I got there. A few days in London, then by bus to Paris and then on to Amsterdam. So all three cities. And we flew out of Schiphol. Amsterdam is great! It has a real small town, countryside feel. Another thing you overlooked is the days of the Dutch Empire. All of the Dutch colonies around the world led to the start of KLM. And of course, the VOC. The Dutch East India company. And Royal Dutch Shell. For a "small country" the Netherlands has a worldwide presence. Like France and Britain and (UGH!) America. Here where I live on the East Coast of Canada there was a KLM ticket office. Amsterdam to Toronto and the return flight was Toronto-Halifax-Amsterdam. To load seafood on the return was the story. It was like that for a few years but they closed the KLM office here. I'm bummed about that.
Good to hear such small real life stories😀
Here in the Netherlands we never book klm flight for European destinations. Because klm is the most expensive company to fly with here in Europe
London Heathrow runs at full capacity, so if there's any kind of weather problems the delays get really bad, something to consider if you're connecting there from Scotland. Schipol doesn't have this problem so much, definitely better hub airport for Scotland than the London airports for thus reason alone.
It’s a true shame that the government wants Schiphol to shrink and lose its current position while the countries around us move on and grow their airports. One thing I’d like to mention about the video is that there’s 3 other airports in the country with international flights of which one is in the north (Groningen, Eindhoven, Rotterdam, Maastricht). They do have flights outside Europe too (Turkey, Morocco etc). The difference with Schiphol is that they don’t have long haul flights :)
Yeah shrinking the traffic at AMS doesn't really make sense.
You can shrink Schiphol if you take out the many flights to Paris, Brussels, Luxembourg, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, etc. These flights mere exist to fill other planes and are perfectly replaceable by a train.
@georghuppertz5727 as a flight traveler I am not sure I would like to travel by train instead of plane to catch another flight.... if there is a delay with the train I would miss the second flight without any compensation, if the first flight is delayed the airline simply rebook my second flight, i do not want the inconviniences of carrying 3 luggage from train station to airport, stress about waiting time at luggage drop off and securitiy check lines at an airport I do not know well etc etc.... i do agree that trains should replace flights everywhere where it is reasonable but combining longer train trips with flights can work only if the train trip is also covered by the same airline as the flight before/ after to achieve similar level of comfort and I do not think that this will happen anytime soon
Maybe the government needed to learn from the UK government about the dire consequences of limiting air traffic at Heathrow, which only causes traffic nightmares both in the sky and land
@@Kuricang31 Yeah the train to plane thing is really only going to work if their is a baggage drop at the train station and check in.
Amsterdam schipol serve all the country 17 millions inhabitants also Belgians the country is small and the airport railway station is super connected to all 4 corners of the country and internationally too
also, with good railway and highway connections to western Germany, you can add several million Germans as potential passengers.
Same thing for Atlanta Airport also. No competition. Most places around the world have fierce competition. USA New York should be way busier but has fierce competition. Dubai could be busier but haas fierce competition just hours away.
Dubai doesn’t have much competition as the other airport isn’t a busy airport
@@Samguy55AUH is pretty busy though and could even be reached by car within an hour or even less from DXB. Emirates is just a stronger player in the UAE compared to Etihad. If you zoom out even further, DOH is also very close by and growing significantly.
NYC busier? which one? LMAO
Amsterdam doesn't have 800k population, it's about 920k in the municipal area, and 2,5 million in the metro area.
People tend to forget that Schiphol isn’t in the Amsterdam municipality, but it is still called Amsterdam airport. I live in the same municipality as Schiphol (Haarlemmermeer) and we don’t call ourself Amsterdam. In fact our municipality used to be under water.
4:30 the Netherlands does have a commercial airfield in the north called Eelde
A lot of people in the south and east of the country use Brussels, Cologne, Düsseldorf airport and so on. Even with public transport sometimes.
Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag and Utrecht together are the Randstad region (with many other towns in between them). The Randstad as a whole is the biggest megalopolis of Europe and the economical heart of the Netherlands, with more than 8 million inhabitants. Schiphol Airport is right in the middle of The Randstad. You should see the Randstad as one large city, with excellent rail connections and infrastructure.... often someone lives in one city within the Randstad and works in another. Commuting is fast and easy.
Eindhoven hqs connection to some Tourist destination outside Europe and i fly from there to UK regular basis... But yes schipol is more comfortable and has more connections 😊
London is served by 6 airports. You should add them together. Also you should add the southeast of England to compare to Netherlands as a city
She didnt say Schiphol is busier than Heathrow she explained why a small city has the 4th busiest airport in Europe
There are only 3 airports that serve London (in this sense Greater London) actually. The other 3 other airports are fake as they are all painfully far from London itself Worst of all is London Ashford which is much closer to Calais (FRA) than London itself
Its not just 4,5 million, pretty much everyone has to travel through Schiphol. I live in Rotterdam, but the chance that I can get a flight in Rotterdam is slim. So its closer to 15 million people who use it. the other 2 million might be able to use another airport
I think you missed the part she said 17.5million depend on it.
KLM is never a cheaper option lol It'd be nice if you can pronounce the names of places properly.
Fries land
@@OllieV__nl😢😂😅😢
amsterdam does not have a population of 800,000, by that metric you should only count manhattan as the entirety of "NYC" with just over a million people.
Northern Netherlands does have a minor airport which served some destinations, and still do to summer destinations. But as stated Schiphol is still the main airport. Also Schiphol serves as a major transfer hub for trans continental flights. A lot of flights from the North America connect to flights to Africa and the Western Asia, and vice-versa of course.
That airport is extremely small and is a money pit. The aiport is simply not viable and it is not likely that it ever will be. Seeing enviromental regulations i would not be surprised it will be closed soon.
There is Also another one Den Helder but its for the navy and helikopters to offshore platforms
You said the province of Groningen doesn't have a airport but it does Groningen Airport Eelde wich have connections to Greece , Spaans and Turkey . There is also Maastricht-Aken Airport
But you can’t say that amsterdam has 800k population when the Randstad is considered as one big metropolitan area with 8.3 million
You forgot about the Maastricht Aachen Airport in the south :)
As a person that uses schiphol, munich and frankfurt for transfers. Frankfurt is by far the worst airport. Everytime I transfer in Frankfurt I have to go though security twice and have to go up and down to get to terminal E. Moreover in Frankfurt they use tiny ass boxes, as with someone witha laptop that doesn't even fit in the box flat I end up using 7 or 8 boxes.
This sounds like me in a presentation trying to come up with something to say
Explained well. Just that it's pronounced s-(choking sound)-ipol
Hey, you said there are only 3 airports in The Netherlands. Maastricht and Groningen have also holiday flights from companys as Tui and Corendon.
You should name them all: Maastricht (shared between D and NL), Eindhoven and Eelde (near Groningen)
This airport is the definition of a nightmare. Crowded, understaffed and inefficient. Avoid it at all costs unless you have many hours to waste and the patience of a saint. You will need both.
Schiphol is the closest airport to me. So i have no other choice.
Wait till you fly in-and-out of Heathrow or Charles de Gaulle. Schiphol Airport is much better and more comfortable than those 2 hellish nightmares!
Daily flights is around 1370, not 800. There s non stop flights coming in and going out on multiple runways, it’s crazy
That number is expected but is not always reached. According to Schiphol numbers are at about 92% compared to 2019 (search Schiphol, vooruitblik vliegverkeer or A look ahead at air traffic for regular updates on the numbers, generally bi-weekly)
Why do you exclude Istanbul?
Great Video! But in Correction London has 10 million people living now
Airline hubs play a huge role. The best example we have in the states, in my opinion, is Detroit. If Delta didn't have its Asian operations based out of there DTW would be a fraction of the size. Probably only the North terminal would exist.
Many people in the east and south use the many airports across the border in Germany and Belgium. If those people would switch to AMS, it'll probably be number one in Europe 😅
A lot of Germans also fly from Amsterdam because it has more transatlantic flights than the Düsseldorf airport in the far West of Germany. And it is easter to get to than Munich or Frankfurt from the Düsseldorf, Rhine and Ruhr region....
It is because of connecting flights....very few people are disembarking at Amsterdam
I live i Houston. When i travel to the UK , i go via AMS; ust to avoid Heathrow.
This aiport is crazy busy I scheduled a shower at the airport but because the lines were so long I missed my slot to shower and had to board my connection flight smelling like a 2-dollar bath cloth
4:23 Drenthe have Groningen airport Eelde and is in the north of the Netherlands
The map doesn’t show all the London airports, Heathrow, Gatwick, City, Stanstead and Luton. That’s a significant factor in the South East of England. However as many long distance flights go from Heathrow thats often the option for many UK travelers. But Heathrow has poor public transport access. There’s no direct access by rail other than from the capital. And that is what Schiphol gets right with its rail connections. And that why people outside of London often connect on KLM City Hopper to Schiphol. It’s quicker and cheaper than UK rail. Much as i like the single terminal concept at Schiphol there has to be limitations to its growth. There is already a lack of gates with many short haul KLM flights going from the Fokker Farm. Although KLM manage it reasonably well, it’s hardly ideal.
Most important thing is missing: the excellent rail connection
Paris is way bigger, more like 10M. 2M is just the old historic city boundaries
Measuring cities by city proper is such a bad way to measure population
The number of people in Amsterdam of of April 2024 is 934,927. It expected to be 1 million around 2030. But yeah it’s small compared to other European capitals.
the case with Berlin Airport dates back with Germany being divided for 40 years.
I would not say it is easier to get to other Euopean Cities from Schipol airport. Maybe Brussel that about it.
Amsterdam has Schiphol as a economic motor and Rotterdam the port. They both are transit hubs for other countries
Just unfortinate that theyre reducing it because a few people have to complain while theyre living next to the airport themselves.
A lot of the people from the netherlands alsp go to Düsseldorf or Frankfurt airport
Not everything you said in this video is correct. The Netherlands has 5 commercial airport which serve passenger aircraft. One of them is actually in Groningen/Drenthe, called Groningen Eelde Airport. But since Amsterdam Schiphol has most intercontinental flights for the Netherlands, it serves as the intercontinental hub. All the other airports do have international flights (not domestic flights as you had called them) to other destinations in Europe, mainly served by low-budget airlines such as Transavia, Ryanair and Easyjet, but also by charter airlines such as TUI and Corendon.
There's something wierd about this channel but i cant really figure out what it is. The script and the narration feels like ai, but the editing is fine af
LHR need 1 more runway to conquer the AMS
Most people that live like 30kilometres away from the German border will just go to Düsseldorf or Köln Airport in Germany
Why excluding Istanbul?
Few things you forget, First Schiphol Group is the owner of lelystad ( pretty small ) eindhoven rotterdam maastricht and Groningen
AMS is a hub between North America and europe
KLM co owner in achiphol group is the only airline in europe to fly to taiwan (KLM aisa) and china (klm)
Klm also is 1 of the only airlines who fly to smaller places like vienna
The main reason Amsterdam Schiphol is so busy : 37 %. are transfer passangers
Well the Netherlands has more airports: Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Lelystad (only for tiny planes), Rotterdam, and some more
That railroad map at 2.50 has a lot of missing lines
Paris has population of 2,1 million???? wtf?
The intramuros figure is probably correct, but since the Greater London figure was mentioned the same should be done for Paris (10.8 m in that case)
EHBK left the chat, has some flights to Dubai, also cargo flights And flights to the Gambia and Egypt, if I remember correctly, those are not in europe The amount of wrong information being told in the video is immaculate, I’ve reported you for misleading info
I already commented you got facts wrong, but you also are wrong about the amount of flights from both Rotterdam/The Hague airport and Eindhoven Airport. Both have more than 100 flights/day
"The North of the Netherlands doesn't have a commercial airport". Am sorry to say, but you're forgetting Groningen-Eelde Airport
The narrator ruined it for me
Also Netherlands borders Germany with a big Airport in Düsseldorf for example
Eindhoven has an airport. So its not like there is no other international airport in Netherlands.
Eelde still exists too...
From Rotterdam airport you can fly to the Maghreb countries
5:28 "you don`t necessarily need a big city nearby" indeed, did you know that Schiphol is actually not located in Amsterdam and still it`s called Schiphol Amsterdam. its Adres is in haarlemmermeer not Amsterdam
Don't forget to MIND YOUR STEP 😊😊😊😊
So basically Amsterdam Schipol is just a bigger Tirana Rinas
Please change the narrator 🙏
So many things wrong in this video. Saying that there are no commercial airports in the north (waving at you Groningen Eelde) or further south (hello Maastricht Aachen Airport) is BS. Apart from that, a lot of people in the east and south travel to airports on the other side of the border because of good and direct connections (Weeze, Düsseldorf, Bonn-Cologne, Brussels and Brussels South) so they don't use Schiphol in the first place. Next to that the most important thing is missing; the reason why Schiphol is so busy is because of it's role in the intercontinantal hub-and-spoke principle thanks to mainly KLM and the partnerships it has struck in the past decades. This has made Schiphol a major base for flights in and out of Europe to other continents and therefor it is a huge transit airport. About 35-45% of the annual passenger numbers (71M) are having a transfer on Schiphol, so don't go in or out from the Netherlands. And that is what makes Schiphol such a major airport compared to it's humble location.
7:19 Terminal 1 at LHR does not exist any more.
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has far fewer passengers than Heathrow(pre-pandemic), let alone all the other London airports included
Yes. So?
1:27 that's not true... from Rotterdam The Hague airport (the Netherlands) you have flights to Nador and other destinations in Morocco. that's Africa so outside Europe :)
She just skipped Groningen wich is not that big but some european countries fly there
Not enough population? It's the most densely packed country in Europe (if you discount microstates such as Monaco and San Marino). Unfortunately the Dutch government agrees with you they think we can house many more millions. Schiphol is overrated, too big with one huge terminal instead of multiple terminals with a lightrail in between them which is more convenient as you don't have to walk so much.
Im pronouncing schiphol wrong until i found this video
super underatted!
Yeah, Amsterdam is a great city with a real small town feel.
Dont forget about Flevoland airport
LEY is effectively just a General Aviation airport with ATC service. Not served by any airline.
Nobody flies domestic in Netherlands
Maybe some day Lelystad Airport will open
What your saying is not true, Eindhoven airport and Rotterdam airport have international flights
KLM is waay better than other European airlines. I tried lufthansa oh God never again, their airport is just bad for connecting.
So, you compares cities (not metropolitan areas) to regioes in the NL.... thats not right at all!! GL has 8.6M as you say but it serves way more: oxford, salisbury, milton keyes, cantebury etc etc... if you do this to all major cities 4.5 is nothing!! i think the main reason is beacuse indeed it stays in a central position, its the major IN airport, great road and rail conections to all contry, major scientific and reserach hub in europe, the IN city of the hague...
Eindhoven Airport does fly outside of Europe…. So that’s incorrect (it flys to Morocco for example)
Last time I checked it was in Africa
