A female American Kestrel doles out a meal to her four nestlings. One of the chicks goes for a ride at 1:35 after biting off more than it could chew, but the female takes special note to return the youngster to the warm confines of her care at 6:30.

The American Kestrel cam is a collaboration between the Cornell Lab or Ornithology and the Raptor Resource Project.
Four downy American Kestrel nestlings are tucked into a gravel-bottomed nest on private property near Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. The nest box is located on the side of a traditional limestone-footed barn, overlooking a rolling grassland that slopes away into folded hills and forests. Our partners at the Raptor Resource Project have watched kestrels breed at this site for over 25 years, and the wonderful combination of grassland, forest, and water that surrounds the property is an excellent example of the habitat that kestrels need to survive and thrive. Watch cam.
The young birds began hatching out of their eggs on June 14th, and the remaining egg in the nest is unlikely to hatch at this point. Over the next 3-4 weeks the nestlings will transform from downy bobbleheads to sleek, dull versions of their parents on a diverse diet of invertebrates, small mammals, and birds (watch this highlight of the female feeding the young). After fledging, the young will continue to be cared for by their parents, remaining near the nest as they learn to hunt and master flight.
Don't miss the outside view! A second camera has been installed to give views of the nest box opening from the outside so viewers can observe the kestrels' comings and goings, as well as the nestlings once they begin peering outside. To toggle between the two camera views, click the "switch camera" icon in the lower right of the livestream player, next to the settings wheel.

The mother bird is amazing and so caring 🙂
But the biggest bird is getting most of the food. The silly one that turned round last kept missing out.
I love birds of prey but the Kestrel has to be one of the coolest. Their small size and plumage is amazing
That was amazing. I have never seen a bird pick up one of its babies like a cat does her kittens before. What amazing and intelligent birds they are.

I just watched this video again one month after the first time, and I WAS.AMAZED all over again about the mom rescuing the chick. NATURE is fabulously amazing! ❤️
Hello Maria munoz
Hello
I had not expected the mother putting that one child back in the nest. Incredible, nature works...
it's what the title says... Es lo que dice el título...
I loved her when she brought her little one back to the nest 😍❤️👍🏻
What a wonderful protective mother.
Excellent parents..they provided what a parent should provide to their babies…shelter, food, safety an warmth 😊
Wonderful to see mom feeding the babies. Cute.
the little baby flipped on his back kicking his little feet in the air looks so cute 1:38
You know he eventually gets eaten by the others
Fact
I have never seen the chick returned like that by its mother! Fantastic💚
WHAT A NICE EXEMPLO FOR THOSE MOTHERS THAT DO NOT GIVE ENOUGH LOVE AND COMPRENTIONS TO THEIR KIDS.
What a caring mom she is...feeds her chicks and covers them from cold and exposure...recovers the smallest...so hard-working..TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY..HE REALLY CARES FOR ALL..
wow! mama has BIG eyes on the ack of her head!!!! Beautiful!!!!!! Thank you CLBC!!!

The mother bird's struggle to provide food to her fledglings is so tenacious that they grow up big ❤
She is such a good momma.
It was to cute how she kept looking at the little chick like " what are you doing over there" lol
That was a rare incredible moment that the mother returned back the left out chick with her beak.
ㄡ
Truth! Soo many would have let it sit there and chirp while it froze to death and just looked at it with its head cocked like "Me too dumb herr derrrr"
Amazing! 😃 I was worried there for a while…. 😵💫 Then, it was amazing to see to the mom bring the baby back. 😜 Though she first allowed enough time for the chick to do it itself but when she couldn’…. Momma to the rescue. 💕
It's always this lil one! lol😂 I miss them so much, hope they are doing fine.

Amazing video to watch 👍👍👍
Birds, protective of their eggs, but treat their chicks like a stranger at times.
@@whykoks That's not evolution, that's just how they will forever be.
That's nature, some mother will kill the weakness child to make other child lives, it's cruel but help
Its survival of the fittest. You don't learn, you don't survive.
I love how instinctual it all is, no one teaches the birdy what to do... Obviously. But it knows. Magic
@None of Thee Above yeah maybe they remember how the mother bird looked after them when they were nestlings
So sweet finally a nice mom

Que coisa mais linda, pegou e trouxe o filhote p o ninho!
You can tell who the oldest is by the way it manages to hog most of the food for itself. Poor little one didn't eat.
rotten mother kept giving the food to the biggest one..while the others got barely a crumb.....a good mother provides for all her chicks,,
Teresa Pren that’s how they ensure survival. They make sure the strongest one gets the food. It’s necessity. They act on survival. Plus if a chick refuses food, or doesn’t show interest, basically good instincts or behavior that would convince the parent of its chances of survival, it’s considered defective and waste of effort and resources. They are not like us, who have plenty of time and resources. They generally have to act on necessity. The parent does eventually feed the other chicks but top priority is to the strongest chick. Later on, when the surviving chicks are more developed and tuned, the parent can then afford to feed them more evenly, provided it’s convinced that the chicks will continue to survive and be able to fend for itself.
@@teresapren3266 not how it works lol
@@JiraiyaSama86 that's dumb as shit. Considering the vole (and most other prey items) has enough mass to evenly distribute between the chicks and ensure they all grow well. 4 healthy potential spreaders of your genes > 1. Birds are just fucking dumb
@@hiibillymayshere4238 Kestrels are known to feed all of their young equally, yes, sometimes during one meal one will get more food or all the food, but kestrels are very carefull about feeding all of their young. SchockWave ZERO is not wrong about all birds, some do not feed the smallest and weakest, but not kestrels, kestrels always try to feed them all (and if there's lack of food, they will kill the weakest to feed the strongest). Do a little research, it won't hurt.
A natureza é linda.
really incredible..
Amazing 👍 gracias por compartir saludos 👍🙋

Whoa.. Color me impressed.. 👍🌟Even if this is 4 yrs old.. Seeing the momma carry her youngest falcon back to her safety was outstanding! I wish eagles could do this.. Never seen it demonstrated b4. Dare I ask if all four made it to fledging? 🌹 😘
You'r video is exellence, keep it up.

Sweet!
Finally, a momma bird that helps her runt back to the brood.
I have to say, after watching videos of Bald Eagles & Ospreys in the nest for several months, I am astounded by the behavioral characteristics of the American Kestrel. The adult female is extremely attentive & intuitive. I was really surprised to see her drag the errant runt back to the fold. But I've not seen this kind of aggressive, competitive behavior in offspring of Eagles & Ospreys. In those nests, feeding time is much more orderly, with the chicks waiting patiently for a morsel from the parent. Of course there is "bonking" & the occasional "hissy fit" as they grow, but I've not seen this kind of free-for-all feeding frenzy, with chicks engaged in a winner take all tug-of-war with entrails. Unlike Eagle & Osprey chicks, Kestrel chicks can swallow very large items with little difficulty!
Oh the food fights got even more furious as they got a little older! It was hilarious at times how the one with the prey would try to hide it from the others and succeeded at that until his siblings eventually spotted the prey!!
Robert, an interesting observation, but I do wonder if this is just an artifact of there being 4 chicks instead of 2, when there are more chicks (in osprey or peregrine nest for example) there is usually more aggression.
True, especially when hard times fall upon the the nest.
This group had an unusually aggressive runt (smallest) chick who paid no attention to nest pecking or behavior order and just went full blast, all the time, at all the food. Normally it would have fallen in behind the larger chicks and 'in its place'. Not this guy. Here he's at it from the start. Not more than a few days after this it was stealing food from the others, taking it right out of the parents mouth and then 'mounting' its stolen prey much like other raptors. It was also aggressive, not just with food but towards the others. In short, it demonstrated very strange mean and aggressive behavior. The others, who were all 'normal' didn't know what to do with this evil runt in their nest. The older chicks seemed to let it be but eventually took runs at it just to get some food. The runt grew fast and soon was bigger than #3 and later, #2. Strange nest.
sardu55 Strange maybe, but certainly interesting, to say the least! Very enjoyable entertainment for a senior citizen like myself. And educational as well. In many ways, it resembled the interactive conditions one might observe, in a large human family...

Good mother!!!
Wow, that chick is so lucky to have such a good parent. I mean, when the smallest chick wandered away from the warmth and protection it had, the adult watched it and then gently dragged it back into the safety of the scrape and the warm underbelly of the adult bird. I think the male American Kestrel is one of the most stunning birds of prey. I thought this was a male at first but then had to check when I noticed the rusty brown patch on top of the blue/grey head colour. More often than not, the species are the same wherever, but I have to say that the male American Kestrel is so much more of a bonny bird than the UK Kestrel (also very handsome). Here's a comparison of our UK male Kestrel. kzhead.info/sun/mt2vZqeKhZyGmYk/bejne.html

That adult is a complete nincompoop. It took several minutes of pointlessly staring at the chick for the parent to finally be forced by instinct to "autonomously" pull the chick back in. Birds are like robots. They run on a program, and are essentially slaves to their instincts... which are often very poor.
@@SteveKasian are you an idiot? That couldnt be furthest from the truth. Lol how ignorant you are.Birds boast some of the most intelligent species of animals on this planet.
