After 10 months of conflict, Ukraine is approaching its first Christmas at war.
Families across the country are without power because of Russian attacks, and some are missing family members who were killed in the conflict.
Since the war began, the BBC has been following one soldier - Lt Eugene Gromadskyi - as he fights to defend his country at great personal cost.
BBC correspondent Quentin Sommerville and camera-journalist Darren Conway joined him at an undisclosed location, near Kupyiansk in the country’s east, where fighting continues amid appalling winter conditions.

I remember this guy and his story from Kharkiv cuz he has pretty unusual surname. His father by himself organized defense line despite he was not ordered strictly cuz he was a retired colonel. And he took his son with him, so when he was killed, the son continued to command and eliminated huge armored column of russians. He was 21 at that moment, now he is 22 and he is senior lieutenant. I remember that when everyone was shocked and sad such a young man lead people to fight. Hope to hug him once.

I believe Eugene was awarded Ukraine's highest military honour.
Why shocked? It's a perfectly normal response for a young man like that raised with loving, supportive parents to want to kill every Russian in site. Being in such close proximity to where his father died - what a grotesquely inhumane thing for Putin to be doing to this peace-loving nation.

I remember seeing that face defending the outskirts of Kharkiv City itself in a video earlier in the war. The change on Eugene’s face since then is shocking. I didn’t recognize him until they showed footage from March. I hope he makes it through.
That's what war does to people. I hope he does survive too but it'll be so hard for soldiers to fight this entire war without suffering serious wounds or death because of how close the fighting is.

This is undoubtedly one of the best pieces of reporting I've seen in a while, and I've seen a lot. It's great reporting and storytelling, while sticking to news. Even the inflections of the interpreter help tell the truth of that mother's perspective. I've seen a variety of coverage from Radio Free Europe (great daily front-line coverage) and some of the bigger networks, but this hit home. I hope work like this is recognized and rewarded in the industry.
RFE is doing a great job in Ukraine since 2014.

I agree with you 100%. It thrills my freedom loving American heart to its core. I never knew anything about the Ukrainian people… Nothing to speak of. I knew they existed and that was about it since this horrible war has started I have been absolutely transfixed by their bravery and their love the freedom and their willingness to do anything it takes to keep that freedom and protect their country. Well.. too bad for them then. As far as I know it was them who started this war, really. Putin warned them prior to the war to back off from joining NATO as he view them as a huge threat to Russia, but Ukraine disregarded his warning. Russia like many other countries was left no option than to mobilized troops to stop a threat as far away from their country as possible

You have to understand they only want to protect their country from their biggest threat, which is NATO. When the US went to other countries to stop a threat, you in the West didn't complain about it, but when Russia is doing to the same thing it's unfair how y'all are treating them badly now.
