Mudlarking the River Thames - Finding the Treasures left behind by people long ago (May 2021)
Forgotten people from long ago left evidence of their existence in the dark waters of the River Thames. At low tide some of it washes up for us to find when we are out mudlarking. Join me down on the Thames foreshore as I search for lost, forgotten and discarded objects and then let your imagination run wild as you imagine who once owned it, smoked it, lost it and what were their lives like!? When we find lost objects on the Thames foreshore, it is really like touching history and these objects are a link to the past. Whilst researching the items that we find, we learn things that we didn't even know that we needed to learn! In today's video I find a special pipe bowl that conjured up images of pirates, but the reality of who smoked it is very different! Maybe you can help me to identify the coin I found too!
If you are tempted to try mudlarking on the River Thames then you need a permit from the Port of London Authority. You can find all the details here:-

The following organisations are really helpful when it comes to identifying clay pipes-

I gasped at the skull and cross bones pipe because I knew Nicola was going to love it!
you were absolutely right! I love it ) x
I think that’s my favourite find by Nicola, ever ☠️
It's historical evidence of the 1st anti smoking campaign. 😲👍
That river. In that city. YOUR city! Ancient place, inhabited since time immemorial, has begrudgingly accepted the refuse of countless generations. Thanks to you, that river gives back, in the form of tiny wonders. Treasures! And, you share them with all of us. Thank you!
well said.
Thank you Charles. What a wonderful poem that is!! I love it xx
So well empoemed :)
Who knew they had teeth? I sure didn’t. Thank you for telling us!
The hover boys found the bottom of a onion bottle today, the teeth(yuck). Today where I am is Mothers day,so with the help of Nic (hijacking her tube for a wee moment) thank you in advance Nicola, here goes, I lost my youngest brother in January and I lost my mom this April, so even though my heart is heavy with sorrow, I wish all mothers everywhere the very best all year round , cause moms are special everyday. Thank you Nicola for a great lark, and happy Mother's day to you as well. Much love from Canada. 🇨🇦🐘🍁🤗
Hi Marion, Oh, Im so sorry to hear of your loss - of your brother and your Mom. How heartbreaking. I send you so much love and hope you don't mind me pinning this comment so that you can get some support from other people here on this channel. Thank you for your Mothers day wishes. Loads of love to you - Nicola xx
Very sorry for your loss...from a fellow Canadian. 🇨🇦🇨🇦 May your cherishing memories of them help you through your day. ❤️❤️

I could sit and watch Nicola all day. So informative and such a pleasant voice it's a pleasure to watch her adventures in the mud. It's also wonderful to see a beautiful person getting mud under her fingernails without freaking out. From a mountain top in North Carolina, I love the way she takes me to the Thames for a day out in London because of her I hope to visit there someday. Be well, be safe, Peace.
Ahh, the old fizzy bottle stopper in the sun shot. It never gets old.
Love the glass bottle stoppers
Nicola I can’t tell you how grateful I am for your videos. I am house baound and see little of the natural world and don’t meet many o people, thanks, keep up the excellent work.
Imagine finding chain mail from the 15th century and you don’t even name that your “find of the day.”
eek, you are right! How spoiled am I?! xx
@@nicolawhitemudlark A skull and crossbones pipe is cooler!
Nicola bring us the quality and story of the past that would normally not be a part of our daily lives. Nicola, your love for the past is why we are here.
I loved the skull and crossbones pipe! It seems to be a reminder that smoking can kill you! Happy US mother's day 🌹. When ever I see ducklings running after their mother I think she must have said " come along children, we have lots to see and do!". Best wishes and hugs from Oregon 😀
Thanks Karen! xx
The fish teeth are so amazing and creepy. To think that the last thing a shrimp may see is it's impeding doom on throat teeth!😮😯😮🤤. Aww the elusive coin identity is beyond me. Love yesterday's pipes. Sorry so late to watch. Blessings Nic
OMG Nicola, that skull and crossbones pipe is amazing as is the history behind it! It's so lovely of you to get in touch With the Nightingale family and offer them them the pipe you found, what a treasure! Wonderful video, thank you x
Thanks Amanda. Isn't that pipe bowl just great?! I am over the moon with it. And yes, I hope I can reunite the Nightingale pipe with the family. I'll keep you updated. xx
Insert here.
Wowww Nicolaaaa a pirate pipe andddd chain mail?? Ohhh and that long fluted pipe with the decoration is gorg. Such beautiful finds. Pirate pipe is Josie’s fave. We really enjoyed sitting down together to watch your video tonight and only a day before a new one too! Yayy! ❤️
Thanks guys. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes I am thrilled with the pirate pipe! And well done on your recent entire MB find which I heard about. I shall look forward to seeing that on one of your upcoming videos. How special! X
@@nicolawhitemudlark awhh thank you! Still so excited about it! It will feature in Wednesday’s upload. 😀 loved seeing your little onion, it’s gorgeous. Will have to mail you and see if we can go for a lark together soon! X
The duck-ducks and geese-geese with their floofy babies at the beginning! 😍😍
I think there were coots too.
It's snowing here in NW Pennsylvania so I decided to stay in and watch you mudlark. I almost lost it when you said Fizzies. I remember those little tablets that kids loved to drop into a glass of water to give it different flavors. Sometimes we would just put the tablet into our mouth to our Mum's consternation and our delight. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Happy Mum's day to you and all the other Mums watching.
Nicola , there was a coin next to the rock off to the right of it when u found that Gray silvery coin .......u probably saw it when u edit ..lol I know it probably happens .. Love u and thanks for taking this 71 year old woman with you ...I adore your videos
I sure do enjoy the pictures of the different birds with their babies . Nature at its finest.
"Death or Glory" Also a great song by the Clash. Pipes were great ,but the chain mail was a huge find!
Yes you're right!!
At 13.29, it looks like another copper coloured disc at 5 o'clock. Love the skull and criss bone pipe!
While I know Mother's Day has passed in the UK, still, let me express my sincere thanks to you, Nicola. Not only are you a great Mum to Angelo, but you provide all your legion of followers with hours of education and entertainment. How much I appreciate you! Lovely finds today. I like the idea of a Thames pirate smoking that pipe!
Thanks so much Steve. That's so kind of you. Im so glad you enjoyed, and yes, I still imagine a pirate smoking that pipe. xx
I haven't gotten to watch the whole video yet, but your intro and establishing shots today filled me with such a sense of peace and happiness that I knew I needed to comment. I adore seeing baby birds following after their mamas. Thank you for these gorgeous shots today!
Thank you Kat! Im so glad you enjoy the shots. It seemed like a good day for it being Mothers Day in a few countries, and also with all the birds and their babies parading around at the moment. Love Nicola x
You know seeing a new video from her makes a bad day feel much better.
My favorite pipe whisperer did it again! Not one but two pipes she has not found before! As usual, another Sunday adventure that does not disappoint. Thank you for the history and the wildlife too!
Lovely description of Nicola.
Loved the Pirate pipe and that bubbly glass stopper is just gorgeous!
Looks like a number of shopping carts (trolleys) were so depressed about the lack of shoppers during lockdown, that they decided to end it all by jumping into the Thames....
haha, I know it's terrible, but there are lots of trollies in the Thames! xx
Ha! Chuckle, chuckle!
that made me laugh! just what we need.
When Nicola posts a new video, you will sit down and watch! Happy Mother’s Day to all who are celebrating today! ❤️❤️
Wow! That skull and cross bones pipe is amazing!!
Yes isn't it!? ❤️
I got to see all of the wonderful things that you have found it's so amazing that you have those little pipes that are hundreds of years old, the glass bottles which I love to collect here in Michigan USA. We mudlark here in our grate lakes, old dumps and gardens. In my garden I found a nice Wedgwood plate with a Rooster 🐓 on it it's one of my favorite things.
You were missed last week. The footage of the "let it go plates" is quite touching as these times of living with Covid19 do require detachment. Your videos are quite up-lifting, and I thank you!
Thank you! Yes, I agree - we all need to let things go sometimes and I hope whoever sent those plates to the bottom of the Thames feels better! x
I did a bit of my own research into that pottery find on the Internet - I actually paused the video, opened a new browser window, and pitched right in - and got several hits, all concerning Sunderland ship jugs. (Particular ceramic pitchers with a proprietary attractive glaze, all made in Sunderland, and bearing the illustration of a sailing vessel.) The verse on each was: ‘This world is a good one to live in/To lend, to spend, to buy, or give in/But to beg, borrow, or get a mans own/It is such a world as never was known’. Which I took to mean "this is a good world". On reflection, I believe your friend's interpretation is probably the accurate one, though. Thanks for another great outing! The 17th Lancers bit was brilliant!
Hello! Missed you last week. It's Mother's Day here in Canada. Happy Mother's Day to you. Looks like a piece of chain mail, size looks right.
How amazing is the skull & crossbones pipe, never ceases to amaze me the things you find. You have found quite a lot of pipes over the years and it's amazing that you find ones you haven't yet seen
NICOLA, I NEVER TIRE of your video's !!! 😍 Even if it's a boring day with hardly any finds, you show us the BEAUTY of nature !!! THANK YOU ! ❤
8:45 Thank you, Nicola! I'm always much less anxious when I see you wearing protective gloves!
Thanks Sheila! x
All This Awful Time Of Illness And Death, Your Programmes Have Brought Sunshine And Smiles For Everyone. You Are A Star. A Million Hugs xxxx
Thanks Roger! You're a star too, and I appreciate you. Lots of love, Nicola xx
Nothing relaxes me more than your sweet voice and the sounds of the foreshore
Me too!! Lulls me to sleep!!
Practically perfect proof of pirate presence. Past or present. Great episode Nicola. 🛳🛥🚤⛵️🛶🚢⛴⚓️
Your pirate pipe reminded me of a Mitchell & Webb skit. "Pirates are fun!" "Yes, but they're still the baddies!". I love that you pass on some of your finds to the decedents of the person who made or owned it. Really cool that you and Germander found pieces with the same epigram at about the same time! It's the magic of mudlarking!
Thank you. Yes, it's all rather magical and Im fortunate to have so many fabulous mudlarking friends to refer to! x
Another good one is The History Guy who prefaces every one of his stories that involve pirates “...after all, doesn’t every great story involve pirates?”
Love the bottle stoppers! So pretty... A PIRATE PIPE...WOW! Curious about the writing on the pottery...and a perfect whole pipe! +++ Incredible finds today!
Love that unusual pipe bowl! I wonder if my koi have those throat teeth. Koi are hybrid carp, after all. The chain mail was astounding. But the little fluffy bums you started with brought a smile to my face.
Nicola, once again some really beautiful music! Very stress relieving! I'm lucky to have a super audio system on my computer!
That onion bottle is gorgeous, just like you ☺️
A wonderful video Nicola, thank you. I especially liked the piece of chain mail and skull and crossbones pipe! This has been comforting to watch, we lost our beloved dog Archie last week which was utterly heartbreaking. He was such a beautiful soul. Mudlarking is going to be one of the things I throw myself into now to keep busy and to heal. Sending much love and best wishes to you xx
Totally love the pirate pipe - so awesome
Happy Canadian Mother's Day everyone! You too Nicola! Great finds today...love that bubbly bottle top! One day you'll find a full onion bottle and not have to reassemble it! Happy, happy day to you!
Just spotted the first Canadian goslings here in Edmonton yesterday. Wake up to Nicola's mudlarking with the birds. Spring has sprung.
Vielen lieben Dank.
@@constancemiller3753 not here in NL yet...still cold and windy and grey...I pity any baby birds out there in their nests around here! Lol
If there is a pipe to be found, only you could find them lol congratulations on the pipes, I’ve got to say I have never seen a skull and crossbones pipe from anyone else either. Naw the ducks are so darn cute too. God bless and stay safe and well, much love from Western Australia 🙏🙏🙏🙏🥰🥰🥰🥰👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🇦🇺
The skull and crossbones pipe was incredible, all of the pipes you found were lovely. There was a lot to absorb from your finds, especially the plates inscribed with the emotions. Human feelings always amaze me.
Me too!
13:59 right above that one next to the white round rock there is a copper coin....surprised you missed it
What!!? let me check! x
I saw that too but I don't usually see most of the things Nicole is trying to show us lol
I saw same thing and told my wife I bet someone else saw that too. Would be neat if you could find it wedged under that stone or brick still
Your funds today were fantastic! The pipe, chain mail, and onion bottle neck graze so much history! And while I LOVE those items, the Toulouse Geese and their babies grabbed my heart. Two females showed up at our home in far Northern California and have made their own home here for two years now. Thanks for your love and care of the feathery finds, as well! ❤️
So happy to see you again! Happy mother's day 💐
The beginning was lovely, it's like everything is coming back to life, apres Covid .
Thanks Martin. yes I agree. xx
Great video as always! Happy mother's day from Cape Town, South Africa 🌹
You are delightful. In so many ways. I love that you are channeling your inner Amelie.
Ah thank you ❤️
thankyou nicola for an enjoyable video great finds thanks for explaining your finds have a great week nicola
Hiya Nicola, Another great video, thank you. I liked the pirate idea more than the lancers, but such is life. I thought you looked very lovely, clean fingernails et al, you do scrub up well! Loved the baby birds with their mums'. You have a fantastic ability to find what to us is hidden, very envious, but as I'm binge-watching I am seeing more, when you tell us where to look that is. Stay safe, Steve...
I love when you hold your treasures up to the sun. 🤗🌞
I love your joy about your finds Nicola. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗👍👍👍👍👍💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟
Watching you find these things and listening and you explaining them all is delightful! I love your English accent.
Thanks Nick! So glad you enjoy xx
I remember the video when you found the onion bottle very well! Still watch it now and then because of the beautiful music accompanyeing it ♥
I had to laugh when you said don't put your finger in a fish's throat. Looking up catfish noodling on KZhead sometime 🤣. An 1897 Victoria penny matches the words/letters you can see on your coin with the same spacing and a left facing head.
Oh fantastic thanks for the coin ID! Really appreciate that - and... well Im off to look up catfish noodling :) Thanks! xx
Arrrrrgh me hearty Nicola it be Mothers day today so may ye be blest with Pirate treasure today ,may your pipe collection grow with wondrous treasures. The opening shows burgeoning life on the Thames shore ,lets hope your larking is also burgeoning .I among many missed you last week and seeing your smart new top I guess the French Navy have granted you furlough. Some like "Fizzy" bottle stoppers now if the content was sparkling and fizzy we'd have the start of a party so Nicola sweet one keep digging. Take care be good Cheers from Canada with ooodles of virtual hugs and kisses.XX
Love that pirate pipe! 🏴☠️
13:35. You were looking at an old & probably very cool old coin (center). I, on the other hand, was looking at what seemed to be a US penny under a brick (to the right). I like what you were looking at better. 😁
Happy Mother's Day, Nicola! The skull pipe is an amazing find and at first I thought it might be a type of memento mori. But I'm glad you researched because the true history is just as exciting. :-)
Nicola : The guinea chicken feeding the baby's , the Ducks going for a swimming with the family all the wild live having a very Spring time. Can you imagen , crosing the bridge to the Tower and there is waiting your knight.? I love to see the treasures you discover in the mud, the trolleys in the river seems universal, what a pity they don't realises what they do is so BAD. Till we meet again, be safe, be happy. From Queensland, big hug's.
Nice message to the Author-of-Plates, I’m convinced we all need to carry a Pop song in our pockets now and then… take care Nicola, good to see you!
Thank you for sharing this interesting day of finds! I really liked the skull and crossbones pipe and, as a long-time viewer, I think that may be my favorite one of all! Good job, Nicola, you must certainly have been a pirate in a previous life. Now, about those fish teeth! What? Ewww! I hope you washed your hands! LOL! Happy Mother's Day Nicola!
Lovely finds , Me and my daughter found two of the skull and crossbones pipe bowls in a river site near Manchester city centre (strangely) amongst many other pipe bowls back in about 2005 , we probably found about 80-100 over the couple of years we lived in that area most of them were Pollocks pipe maker pipes . I think we were the only people in the area who knew about the site. we used to find loads of the old bottle stoppers too a lot have war grade on them.
Wow! How amazing ❤️
The pipe whisperer strikes again. That pipe bowl with the skull and crossbones was an amazing find. Makes me wonder about who actually used it.
Greetings from sunny South Africa Nicola. My partner and I are very fond of your Mudlarking channel, when we see a new video the excitement builds:) We went "sea larking" this past weekend but sadly the tide got the better of us and it was on the high. Thank you for these inspirational videos

Thank you so much for what you do!! You are a joy to watch, always makes my day!
Thanks Jeremy. How lovely of you! x
That clear glass stopper seem to be from a perfume bottle/portion bottle!
Happy Mother's Day (probably belated for you) from across the Pond! I hope it was lovely. As an SCA member (Society for Creative Anachronisms) I've watched chain mail be made by many, many people for over 35 years, and every one of them who'd found or purchased scraps of true historical mail has brought it out and proudly displayed it; so I was pretty sure you'd found the real thing, what with the careful welds. Nice, and amazing that you saw it there in the mud! Loved the pipes too, especially the skull-and-crossbones one from the 17th; that was very neat.
Thank you! Im so delighted to have found the chain mail. Im so relieved I picked it up!x
Way cool finds! All the baby birds are just fabulous!

Interesting first find. I honestly do not know how you see some of your finds. That shrapnel was practically under that rock. A bubbly bottle stopper. Lovely pipes today. A small stopper. Maybe from a perfume bottle? I like that chair in the waves.
