The Captain Of Her Heart
It was way past midnight
and she still couldn't fall asleep.
This night the dream was leaving,
she'd tried so hard to keep
and with the new day's dawning
she felt it drift away,
not only for a cruise
not only for a day.
Too long ago, too long apart,
she couldn't wait another day for
the captain of her heart
As the day came up she made a start,
she stopped waiting another day for
the captain of her heart

  • In 1986, after 10 hours of flying to get from NYC to Hawaii for our honeymoon, I fell asleep in the taxi from the airport in Honolulu, and awoke to this song as the sun was setting and the sweet warm tropical air was wafting in the window. We were also passing Pearl Harbor. I said to myself then that this song is going to remind me of this moment for the rest of my life.

  • I was young, madly in love when this song came out. He was a captain, an army pilot, so handsome, but older than me. Our lives were so different and complicated but we were in love. He’d be away on missions, the long distance phone calls when he could call and the postcards, were my life line. I can remember driving home alone late at night thru the city and passing thru the veil of street lights listening to this song after being out with my girlfriends. I was absolutely in love and loyal to him but miserable because of our lives apart. The Gulf War broke out and painfully we went our separate ways; years past, we each married. He would always contact me on my birthday, ask how I was, and how my husband was doing and wish me happiness. We didn’t see each other for over ten years. Fate and our careers had our paths cross. He had divorced and I was going through one…. We’ve been together 23 years and married 17 yrs. We’re still in love. We are happy and blessed with our life. Time is precious and we can never get those ten years back but he will always be the captain of my heart.❤

  • I'm so glad I was in my 20s during the 80s. I realized only as I got older how special that time was in my life and not just because of the music, but the music was a huge part of it. Still have all my vinyl from that time in very good condition. I can't believe they survived all my apartment moves and exes in the L.A. area. Though one ex tried to make off with some of them, but got them back just in time. Luckily, they are safely in a townhome I bought about 20 years ago. I'm 60 now and feel like I'm in my 20s again when I hear this music. I'll have that feeling forever, and I'm so grateful for that at this stage in my life.

    • Townhomes/Condos must of costed dirt cheap back in those days. I remember they were selling for like $60-90K during the early 90s in the (good) suburbs of Los Angeles. I was barely an adult teen back then with zero money otherwise I'd be well set today!

      @80sGuy.@80sGuy.2 жыл бұрын
    • @@80sGuy. It depends when in the 90s you bought it. They were more expensive in the early 90s than the late 90s. But, yes, much more relatively affordable compared to today especially in the L.A. metro area which is where I live. A similar townhome in my area sold for $430,000 a few weeks ago. That is crazy. There is no way I would be able to afford that today. I'm grateful to have it today. I don't see how young people can buy a place in L.A. today. BTW, my place is a 2 story, 2 bd/2ba unit with a 2 car garage.

I'm just saying that to have been in your 20s during the time this music was brand new and playing at all the clubs was amazing, but we didn't know in real time how special and historic it was until decades later. I was in college around this time and remember seeing The Pretenders perform at a free outdoor quad area before they were really famous. This was around 1978. I was 18 years old and beginning to sneak into dance clubs all over L.A. The beginning of an amazing decade for me. I'll never forget that time and it will always be a part of me. I listen to those songs today and they immediately take me back to a specific moment in time. That is what I cherish now and so grateful to have had that experience in my 20s during the 80s.

  • To me, the lyrics symbolize significant life situations occuring, while the solo piano music is a musical expression of time/life slipping past.

  • I was in my mid 30’s when it came out, so had the 60’s and 70’s well behind me by then. I miss that decade, had more fun than I deserved. The mix, the vocals, the instruments. 80’s music was more complex than eras before or after.
