A politician's career derails when a live interview goes awry.
CHOKED UP is used with permission from Jill Worsley. Learn more at worzel.co.uk.
Fiona Lacey is a British minister for the environment who is giving a high-stakes, career-defining interview. Prepping for it is highly stressful, with Fiona getting conflicting perspectives from boomers, zoomers, her staff and even her Gen Z son, who doesn't even want to be there.
But during the live interview, she gets into a coughing fit, which finds her taking a cough drop on air. This sets off a maelstrom of online commentary and memes -- all of which put Fiona and her future in politics into the spotlight in a very uncomfortable way.
Directed and written by Jill Worsley, this acerbic, intelligently crafted short comedy is less about actual political issues than the nature of contemporary online and social media discourse as it intersects with any issue. Through clever, smart writing and directing, briskly paced editing and sharp performances, it captures the unique "butterfly effect" of how one incident can ignite a swirl of noise, which carries away any hope of a substantial discussion far from the intended target.
The deft writing quickly sets up the situation of Fiona's work, the high stakes and care she puts into it, the flurry of advice about the optics and her slight nagging cough. But the storytelling quickly reveals its light yet satirical hand when Fiona's cough live and onscreen unleashes a hurricane of online commentary. The film has fun with the range of responses that Fiona's cough sparks, each one more absurd than the next. It makes fun of both sides of the aisle, so to speak, but more importantly, it captures the broader media landscape as one driven by outrage, "hot takes" and attention-seeking, no matter what the stance or topic is.
In the center of the chaos is actor Maxine Peake's excellent performance as Fiona, which is always pitch-perfect and truthful, no matter what is being thrown at Fiona. Peake plays Fiona with competence and earnestness, which get befuddled at first at the absurdity thrown at her. But Fiona becomes increasingly indignant as her viral moments spin out of control, and as she tries to respond, the clunkiness of her repair efforts derail her reputation and career. At first, Fiona and her team try to take on the torrent of critics on their terms, responding to various incidents and charges leveled at her, which become increasingly ludicrous. But eventually, Fiona gets fed up enough to speak her truth to power, cutting through the noise to get to the heart of what matters to her.
Fans of sharp political satire like VEEP, IN THE SOUP or even older films like NETWORK will find much to enjoy in the smart and entertaining CHOKING UP. And true to its nature as a satire, it stays committed to the joke to the end. Just when you think Fiona has triumphed against all the haters online with a stirring moment of truth and conviction, the final joke's on her -- because the ultimate power move is to remove the player from the game altogether.
😂😂😂😂 A real picture of politics today 😂😂😂😂. Everything triggers everybody today 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, I didn't like seeing the people be triggered. I understood that the film used it to drive home a good point, but it gets exhausting to see politicians give in. What's more annoying is that politicians like her are usually aligned with the triggered people.
When you've got nothing to lose, you've got everything to gain
That primal scream outburst sounded really cathartic, bordering on psychological detox, it also shows the cough sweets were very effective. " I'm not affiliated with the cough sweet company either " .
In politics, side show is what always the attention grabber, the actual topic of concern remains in the background and hidden
Yeah, I agree, and it's so frustrating. We can craft a well written message that is respectful of people's time and sensibilities, but the majority will not respond.
I laughed until I choked 😂, fun, funny and still made a serious true point about the sad state of politics today, great job 👏
I did to 😅😂
IMO, the best comedies, such as this one, make fun of everyone. Well done!
Does it make fun of climate activists, though?
@@000aleph I didn't watch it carefully, but it seemed like it was defending climate activists.
@000aleph why would it though? The point was that everyone focused on how that politician talked, the exact words she used and not the actual issue, which was the climate change. An actual problem, unlike the chocking thing.
@@JateCharaireFATE Why would it?? If you feel that only climate activists should be exempt, then shouldn't you be contradicting the guy, who started this discussion? Why should Aleph defend a view that he never claimed?
@@eugenetswong ... I didn't think my response would prompt anyone "defending" anything cause it wasn't a view? Aleph was asking a question (which you responded to, as well) and I responded with the reason (I think) they didn't include climate activists. and anyway these comments should be about the film, not defending any views. as for the OP, they didn't ask a question, so there was nothing to reply to.
What a gorgeous location to shoot and a hilarious story to boot. Great work!
Maxine Peake is a superior actor. Give her an Oscar. No! Give her TWO Oscars.
Stopped being a fan since she started spouting her politics.
EXCELLENT!! and timely. Thank you to all who made this film.
As a person with a tiny throat still paying my medical bills from getting a fried noodle stuck in it and trying to change society to take accountability for stopping climchange, i second the suggestion to make this a series!!!!!😂🙌💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
LOL! So hilariously accurate!
That smile at the end..😊
Fantastic cast! This should be made into a series……
He should sample the scream as well...
Bravo ....simply written and fun to watch ❤
Hahaahahaaha !! This is the most hilarious thing i have seen in a long time
I'm just here to endorse that you can NEVER go wrong with positive vibes from music! Oh and excellent film! Shows how easily beguiled people are by what they see and hear often far cry from the truth and reality.
Delightful film. I watched it after viewing a dozen short clips of the press reacting to their personal twists on the morning "news"....
Awesome acting performances from everyone in the cast especially Maxine 😎. Cool Iceland location shots
Cli-mergency. Lol. People seem to want to mash words together all the time. At some point its actually too much tho
I don't think anyone's actually used that word in real life... plus, it's only "too much" until it becomes a mainstay part of the english language, like basically all words have
Absolutely hysterical!!! Thanks for making me laugh!
A perfect example of the screwed up world we live in. Great performance from Maxine 👍👍👏👏
Absolutely brilliant Well done and right to the point. This captured me throughout the whole video
Maxine Peake, one of the UK's top actresses from the past 20 years. Very funny in here.
Amazing short movie, reminds me of black mirror. This defo should be a series!
Please help me find the short film, it was on omeleto- where if a couple stays in a relationship and one of them takes a step, that person ages 10 years. What's the title of the film?
ChatGPT4: "The short film you're asking about, which features a concept where one partner ages by 10 years if they take a step, is titled "If You Never Answered X.""
@@000aleph No I tried ChatGPT already. It's funny how confidently it gives wrong answers. Just makes stuff up that seems 100% legit. Thanks for your effort.
May I suggest that you search through the Omeleto catalogue. I know the one you mean, it shouldn't be too hard to find. Good luck.
@@MW-us3sv How is this comment helpful? I've searched through every catalogue of their every channel, didn't find the film. If you know which one I'm referring, why didn't just tell me the name? Why sit there with the info and still make me work? Work I've already done? What does your comment achieve? Uncool.
Excellent !
Superb film. Loved it.

Brrrrilliant!! So on point. The world has gone mad. Maxine Peake is ace!! 👏🏻😁 They all were. We must look after our planet though. And each other ✌🏻🌍

Jostling space today. The social media has only itself, but the mainstream media can also broadcast on social media... Now Iceland stands shoulder to shoulder with the Amazon basin...
politicians are the lowest of the low

@@johnbowman1076 oh yeah I thought she looked familiar
Absolutely delightful!! Thank you for sharing.
I played EverQuest for 100 hours - Should You?

Two woke points in one short- done 😂 ! And really tragicomedy - Idiocracy state of today, what an ignorant bliss on all accounts
Climate emergency? Bwahahahaha.
