  • I will be the first to admit that the current sculpts sold as minis by GW are arguably the best they've ever done, but there is something about the old 80s/90s stuff that has been lost over time, and that is character. They just ooze so much character that the modern stuff is almost sterile in comparison. Maybe im just too old and nostalgic

    • Nah, I feel the same way about the 90s and 80s models

    • I agree, but a lot of the 80s/90s Fantasy minis are new to me. I think it is more than just nostalgia, as I have none.

      @CocoHutzpah@CocoHutzpahАй бұрын
    • The new sculpts are just TOO perfect. Whereas the traditional sculpts of the 80s, 90s, and early 00s still have that imperfect hand sculpted charm to them. The technical proficiency and technology of today is phenomenal, but it can produce some sterile looking models.

      @username12120@username12120Ай бұрын
    • No I agree, not only are the new sculpts often excessively detailed with fiddly bits of very limited value to the model and then everything ends up near perfect if not entirely perfect in symmetry and repeating shape across models - which just makes them less 'real'. Then there is the subject matter - some time in the 2000's maybe into 2010's all the whimsy and fun details go away in the quest for every more dull, repetitive legions. No halfling hotpot etc.

    • @@foldionepapyrus3441 The keys on the new Bretonnian duke come to mind. Nearly bent mine irreparably when I was putting together the damn Pegasus. I prefer 90s-80s sculpts because they have a few details here and there, but are a dream to paint once you get going.

    • They're perfect for it. Especially given that Colonel Schaeffer worked with the Inquisition, so they could easily have been made Imperial Agents available to work with any Imperial force (and, y'know, sell more minis). Shame that's probably not on the cards though.

They're iconic, nostalgic, still look good with more modern minis and are still in demand. I can't think of any other chaos minis that are better bets for re-release. Also: LE1 Motley Maniac the Death Jester. Also: Speciality Set 2: Dwarf Kings Court - Corbit Shortstuff, Gnome Jester (a Two Ronnies reference no doubt)...

  • A lot of the old models are better then their modern variations if you ask me, the olddar Gaurdians looked so cool in their trenchcoats and chain mail. I bought two so far and their two of my favourites out of my entire miniature collection. The mohawk, chain mail, trenchcoat and sunglasses deserve more recognition, Everything was so much weirder and more colorful then modern Warhammer.

One of my free company units has all of them, a few hunchback dregs, various Mordheim mob and a couple of Vespero's duellists. Makes a nice circus troupe with a stagecoach unit filler.

  • I just love the old 80s and 90s models, maybe because that's when I started. The new ones while more detailed, are more like small painted statues meant for display than play. I think the new Aelves sculpts suffer the most from this, so many small fragile parts that I can barely move them on a shelf without them breaking.

My wish list is every Warhammer Quest model. I'd love it to be with the rules, but even just the model would be great. Getting the Bretonnian Knight on MtO was a really awesome surprise! It's unlikely, given that they're a legacy army, but my other dream would be the Dark Elf Executioners from 4th edition that were never put on general release.

I pick some up here and there every now and then and they're still some of the most delightful things that the company has ever made. Not that I would complain about some 80's Greater Daemons, though. I have one original Lord of Change and would happily take more. The pterodactyl head is fun but the twin head and the skeletal heads have their points too.

Almost made me want Fists back in the day, until I realised "Oh, this is why in 30 years time people are gonna say they hate painting yellow". That was useful that. Could have foreseen the lottery numbers or something, but nope, just that yellow paint would seemingly forever have a reputation of being cumbersome to use.
