We are three weeks away from adopting our third (Lady III), who we have been waiting on for 14 months. Our second Chow Chow, Lady II, left this Spaceship in August 2021 at the age of 13. We never had the skin issues with our first two, however, it is great to know in detail what a Chow owner has gone through and the solution that was found. My chow has been on Apoquel long term to control itching. I would give him half the vets recommendation and that would manage the issue. But I recently discovered Nutri-paw anti-itch treats. These have been helping massively, and I have been able to reduce the amount of Apoquel I have been giving him significantly. Our allergy test revealed that he was allergic to grain, rice and cereal. Cutting these out of his diet has also helped (be mindful, most dog treats have cereal in it). As we have had him on these tablets for a while, I started ordering them online. It's less than half the price compared to the vet and never had any issues ordering online.
Which allergy test did you take ?
@@chloeman5888 it was a blood test through the vet which screened for everything. it was about £140. but I think there is an even more detailed test they could do to home in on a specific area..

I have an 1 an a half year old chow,looks exactly like carter(same colour ears everything💙he’s recently had such a rough time.at first like carter it started at his back end.he had allergy test and all came back normal.everything was fine in regards to his food then he started at his tail.at first I thought it was all part of his zoomy time(chasing the tail)until I woke up one morning to a poorly tail)he’s living his best life in his lampshade wen left alone.my vet hasn’t mentioned apoquel.i just want him to live his absolute best life without having to wear his lampshade and be back to his normal fluffy self.thanks so much for this video,it’s definitely something I will be talking to my vet about.also with his teddy bear cut do you think that has helped him?
By the way, I was able to change my show line German shepherd's coat by changing her diet as well.. Raw diet for her : ) Thanks for the video!

I have a question. So I’m going to get a chow chow sometime soon and I have Tourette’s. I was wondering if they would take being taught how to being my service animal well? I don’t how to explain this. And would they hate me if they grew up around me being kind but hitting myself? I used to have a dog that I would softly hit(I controlled what I could) and he never hated me for it. Is it the same for chow chows?

First thing I heard about the Chow Chow is diet shouldn't include chicken, not to trim their hair and ensure hair is 100% dry after washing him as dogs can't get sick. Wondering why vet or groomers didn't say that to you. Also, new clothes need to be washed before wearing them. They may contain cgemicals from where they are made that can irritate the skin

Carl, I feel like you may need to change your vet. I mean they should have know that Chow Chow's have this problem. Instead the make you go through all that expensive testing etc. I have found a lot of vets are just in it to make money, i hate to say that but that is the case here in the US. They know we love our pets so much so we will be willing to spend all the money to get them back to normal. They will never offer quick simple treatments. I found I big difference between different vets. Just a suggestion to think about.
