Are you always disappointed with how dinky your home grown strawberries are? If so, chances are you planted everbearing strawberry plants.
This year I planted a brand new (to me) variety, & my results have been spectacular! Check ‘em out!
The strawberry tower is limiting the size and run of the roots of your plants and, consequently, the berries are small. Plant directly into the ground and your berries will be bigger. Albion was developed by the University of California and is currently the main variety grown in California.
Strawberry roots are small and it will only get so big. That's why you can hide them between others vegetables while growing to protect from birds. But yep need at least 8 in apart with no runners

I've had that experience. Strawberries will grow in vertical planters or strawberry pots with limited space but tend not to produce as much as those with more space in ground. At least if I net them so birds dont get them all first. 😂 The other factor that could impact her strawberries is they only produce well for a few years then after three they peter out. So her everbearing might just have been out of steam. Runners are also great for new plants but they also suck energy away from berry production. Strawberries need good fertlizer treatments too to do well. I have everbearing that make big supermarket size berries so it's not an everbearing vs June bearing issue, there are multiple factors and depends on varieties as well.
I plant my Albion 18 inches apart on a raised bed, and the results are amazing. I get berries that will fill the palm of your hand.
Albion is an everbearing strawberry. U will have to fertilize it and keep it watered or the size of the berry will go down.
I know this video is over a year old, but i just wanted to say Albion IS an everbearing variety. Those tiny strawberries make me think of the Alpine varieties.

I have everberaing strawberries planted in a 2 x 4 box. They give me 10 lbs every year. The berry sizes range from extra large to extra small. The first year or so you have to let the plants get to maturity. I never ever harvest all my berries. I leave some berries behind because they will fertilize your plants. I've never had to add anything to my strawberry plants other then tree leaves for the winter. Come spring my plants come up to my kneecaps and I'm 5' 3".
They also need full sun. Mine didn't like the shade and once I transplanted them into full sun the berries got larger. I've had these berries for 11 years now. Good luck!

Money are great too! I actually transplanted some last spring, they didn't do much last year, didnt expect them too. But they are loaded now! I'm in Zone 7
That’s on you! You need to fertilize with 3-2-4- liquid fertilizer!
Most are realizing that Those are day neutral variety. Get seascape or sequoia... they are both amazing. Seascape is known to be a high producer and sequoia is prized for their sweetness, used mostly for deserts... I also have Pineberries, they are smaller but quite tasty, and are everbearing also. First year you cut all the runners and the flower/fruit stems, to concentrate the strawberry plants focus on root and crown development. Second year, cut all the runners and reap fruits. Third year, reap fruits and allow to send off new shoots to produce more plants. Fourth year, renovation of strawberry patch... take all the new baby plants out and move to new bed.. take mama plants out and divide crowns, bring to new bed and replace Mama back into her spot. Mama’s only really last 5-7years. So Repeat this process until Mama starts looking weak. At which point, Take Mama out and replace with one of the baby/sister plants. Strawberries will produce for years and only get better with time and proper care. Keep growing! 🙏🏻🌱

I have a variety of strawberries. I get berries all summer into fall, all different sizes. My ever berries have always done well

So you tried one everbearing variety and are discouraged? If you’re spending “all this money” planting strawberries, you’re doing it wrong. You should be getting better than store bought berries multiple times a year with everbearings. Maybe try another variety, its nice to have June and and ever-bearing to get widest spread time of harvesting.
She actually tried a couple. She preferred the Albion. She was discussing how discouraged she was before researching and finding a good producer.
Simple answer is you don’t know how to grow strawberries. They take a ton of nutrients from their soil and like a lot of water so if they don’t have a lot of what they need they won’t produce larger berries everbearing are also a smaller type but they produce significantly more and can flower 4 times a year if you grow them properly
Hello there. I love to grow strawberries myself, and old, unknown variety. They don't get very big but they are packed with flavor. I have wanted some ever bearing but don't have any now. What you have shown is interesting, they look great!

I would consider the size of the tower restricting the plants ability to produce. hard to tell for sure but that looks too small. Alllllll strawberries put off runners lol, unless they are actually alpine berries.
If you clip the runners your strawberries will get even bigger!
Albion are day-neutral everbearing. I've grown them 3 years in a row. They do seem to get gray mold and other fungus pretty easily.

I truly agree with you when it comes to those tiny berries. I even made the mistake of wondering how strawberries got to start growing in a place I know that I didnt plant them and dug the plant up and put it with my others and low and behold it was a wild berry weed and it grew more berries than my good plants of what the deers/rabbit didnt eat.
I am on the hunt now for these. I will watch you and see how they do.

Inadequate space for a good size plant. I get huge plants and 1.5 to 2 inch berries. Plants need space for root development and keep runners cut until the mother plant is on the 3rd year then grow runners to replace the old mother plant. I even clip off extra berries and only leave 2 or 3 to get huge berries. I keep my plants pruned and free of runners and berries until end of April to mid May then just clip runners and extra berries.
I have grown many types of strawberries but I must say I have amazing luck with Tristar everbearing they are very sweet and grow a s big as what you just showed in your video and I pick many of each plant up till my first frost!
Albion’s are everbearing lol. The everbearing variety you had before (likely also day neutral not everbearing) being alpine, or something similar.

I have everbearing strawberry and they are the most amazing strawberry’s Weber ever had….They get huge and are beyond sweet. I dunno why you had no luck ?
Grow some Alpine strawberries like Ruegen or Yellow Wonder. You can pick them up from June until late November.
You just cant grow them there imo. Gets shaded from every corner and they are all cramped in a little bit of soil
Albion is pretty old and less productive and less sweet variety comparing with new similar ones. I suggest to try grow new varieties such Amandine, Favori, Cabrillo, Charlotte. Someone suggestet to cut off runners because them takes energy - wrong! It is whole different agrotechnicks when growing day neutral (everbearing) or short day varieties. Not cutting off runners but cutting off flowers until end of May, it is saving energy and allow plant to grow bigger. Everbearing varieties gives good harvest only at first year and gives runners mostly ONLY at first year, so you need to save runners and replant every year again and again. As opposite for example shortday variety Chamori Thurusi can grow and produce 7 years in one bed where it is planted. Strawberries the best is to plant in autumn. If planted in late spring so I am not suprised why disappoinment in low harvest. A lot of tips and knowledge comes with a time, it is actually pretty easy growing garden culture and very rewarding. Just into a small pot with sandy potting soil with perlite and peat and coir. Worm castings. Move them based on the heat, less heat more light, more heat less light. Tbh those are kinda small plants. Those type constantly make fruit and just are more bushy. Those look like they are struggling. I managed a nursery for 15 years.
I plant in bulk. And then let them crawl all over the patch. I normally get 3 wooden salad bowls full (that you put out for the family). I have everbearing and also June bearing. No problems with them. But they are small and they take awhile to establish. Even with fertilizer. I just plant more to make up for it. No problem for me. My that is my opinion.
Whether the strawberry is everbearing or not doesn’t matter here. In fact, june-bearing (as opposed to everbearing) strawberries are actually smaller in size, generally. The reason the other variety could be doing better than previous varieties you’ve tried could come down to which works best in the climate you’re in. Also, they should have a lot more space than you have given them. That is a LOT of strawberry mother plants in such a small, compact space. The need about a sqft of space per mother plant. Additionally, make sure you cut off the runners as these will sap a lot of nutrients from the motherplant that won’t be going towards the strawberries it is growing. If you ever think something isn’t growing well, there is always a reason. Start with making sure the variety is suited to your climate then consider other aspects like soil, water, space, sunlight, upkeep, pests etc to determine what is stunting its growth.

I bought some straw berrie plants this year and some of them have been either small or medium sized but a random giant straw berrie started to grow and it is almost ripe
I’m curious if you’ve ever tried Seascape strawberries. I planted about a dozen plants and they are prolific producers for me. They had some berries the first year but the second year was mind blowing. They produced a big main crop and then 2 other smaller crops until the weather put them into dormancy. I’m in zone 6a in SW Pa. Might want to check them out. Thanks for the video 😊
My everbearing strawberries were delicious the first year. This year (so far, it is only early May), they are big, but not very sweet.
I grow Montanas. Good producers and the flavor is excellent.
well you need to clip all the runners so the plants energy goes into the fruit. you can root the runners too for new plants. the tower limits growth. they're all competing.
Sounds like you're planting the wrong variety. There's a huge difference in fruit size even within everbearing varieties

Lol. I plant Ozark Beauty and Seascape. Everbearer and day neutral. My berries are awesome, big flavor and long seasoned. I dig the continuous harvest and the redness all the way through. Central NC. I planted my fruit trees and grapes for a long season also.
Grocery store strawberries have gmos in it and have been sprayed with chemicals
Hello, can you share the seeds? My daughter loved it, but when we moved in, the raspberries were gone. I went to look for them, but there was another building there.
The everbearing may just not be a good match for your area, soil, sun, etc. I have some in Southern CA, and the everlasting produce perfectly normal sized straw berries and grow quickly, with many runners that propagate well.
Bigger the roots the bigger the fruits usually but I’ve just started fertilising them and they’ve grown better. Before then I’d just put compost

I've been growing strawberries (haphazardly) for years and just found out a couple of years ago that when you first plant a new plant, you're supposed to pinch the flowers off and prevent fruiting the first season for a better harvest the following season. It helps send the energy to the root system and makes the plant more productive overall. Also, you are supposed to cut runners off until later in the season when the plants stop producing fruit, otherwise they lose a lot of energy to producing the runners, when what you want is fruit. So, with those new everbearing plants,for more and better fruit next year, you would both pinch off the flowers as they appear and cut the runners off until fall. Next season, let it fruit but cut the runners off until the fall. Finally - they need a LOT of water to produce decent fruit, as soon as they begin flowering. If they are too dry, the flowers will die and not produce any fruit or produce smaller fruit. I personally have not been able to bring myself to cut the flowers off but I am trying to stay on top of the runners!
Ooooo yea that's a big one it's a hard one if doing 200 pots and knowing no first small crops but you get way better crops each year after because that year was all about the roots you can also pinch out some when established so it send energy to others we call it grazing like an animal would lol
I am located in Guysmills PA which is North West PA about 120 miles straight east of Cleveland here we get very good results with honeyoye and jewel. It makes a difference where you live what grows good I have high humidity here here I'm in the valley I get fog when I get a lot colder than everybody else too probably 5° can you tell us what state you're in in approximately your location and type of weather you get where this is zone five might be more like borderline four because sometimes it does get cold. other brands I've had here do good rate or darselect from nourse they are more of a late strawberry

Try some old British varieties if you can get them, they taste fantastic but our weather is so rubbish that the season is short

I have a patch of Albion strawberries, too. I like the flavor of them. I'm not crazy about the texture, they're very firm. Mine are suffering in the heat at the moment, I'm hoping they'll give me a decent harvest going forward. Just a little note about selling them... I'm thinking they are patented and that may be illegal. It's probably not something you have to worry about to sell a half dozen to your neighbor. But technically, I'm thinking that there could be some bad things that could happen if you'd take that too far. Hopefully not, but just wanted to throw that out there.
runners are going to limit your size if you want big berries pull the runners off if you wanna route them you can you put them in some water or pro mix BX would probably root faster if you were like from Pennsylvania to Michigan or Ohio the honeyoye or Jewel berries are very good for June bearing what you want to do is get some pro mix BX and as a white dust mix it up and drop it in the hole under your plants replay it with black plastic cause it drains true in Pennsylvania we go Hollywood June we get huge berries you can plant comfrey plant near them and fertilize them with the leaves or make a tea and they love it or you can use the product I made called massivegro by adding potassium you will boost your flower production and the quality of your berries I would not plant in the middle vertical podge you got strawberries need some space my Amish body had excellent cloys and they were like 6 feet apart on the roads where he had to plastic but you would go up there and I mean he had tons of them that I started growing the jewels and I found out when I fertilize them they actually put out earlier than a honeyoye's I had Jules Honeoye is Dhar select in Cabot and Seascape and I had strawberries all summer long as he skips what rating is 6 inches of snow because I went to Advanced rolond class of NPK university of Harley Smith which is just a class on the Internet on Tuesday night and I learn the advantages of which chemical to apply women to get higher quality food and more production and I started getting like 27 times more fruiting out of my plants all your shoots are good for starting new plants but they're going to shrink the size of your strawberries because they're using all the phosphorus energy in the plants you should pinch off all those shoot shoot and start them in some separate mix or water and then replant them so we might just be able to stick in the dirt put them in a semi shaded area so they're not bright sun unless you're going to water them all the time.
I started my first garden this year. I bought Everyberry and have gotten only 6 berries. Yes, they taste amazing but like you said, they were small and very few.

first time's the smallest. but try to seperate runners. if they flower straight away. your berries will be small. you can cut them off and root them in water then plant them later. free plants. letting runners go crazy means small berries. it sucks out energy from the mother plant.
I grow gurney whopper strawberries and they are huge but not ever bearing!! I also have two kinds of ever bearing, fort Laramie and charlotte and they are not as good flavor or size….but they do produce all season long.
Those runners take most the energy the plants should be at least going on 2 yrs old before you keep the runners
I don't mind smaller berries because I process them anyway.

The thing is that albion strawberries are everbearing but they are more considered as day neutrals, I've been trying to grow that variety and I failed miserably.It's probably my soil and climate that hampered my success

I think strawberry plants are just a thing for fun unless you have several dozen plants. I have grown them for 4 years so far and I used milk crates. I have about a dozen plants and I maybe get two handfuls of berries. Last year I had to buy new plants and I thought I bought everbearing which I like best but they were june bearing. My new plants had nice berries last year but this year no flowers so far do not even one berry. The plants are absolutely beautiful tho bcuz I have fertilized religiously . Massive leaves and best my plants ever looked. A real mystery. We got sunshine later this summer in my zone so maybe that is why. Aug 21 and no flowers still!😭My tomato plants are packed with fruit. I had plans to build my strawberry tower taller which I will still do with the dozens of runners but who knows if I'll get berries again. Bottom line is your husband is correct. It's not really worth the expense if you have to buy plants,soil and fertilizer for so little reward. I don't think I'm gonna pay for more plants in the future.

I find everbearing varieties just don’t have that great of flavor. I don’t care so much about size. June-bearing strawberries are both very big and taste best. Actually no, alpine strawberries taste the best, but those are extremely tiny lol.
Albion plants will eventually stop producing so it is important to replace the older plants that you started from runners.
Yeah you are growing the wrong kind, all commercial cultivars suck including albion. They are bread for the shelf. You have to find gourmet cultivars. They actually taste like a proper strawberry. Alpine strawberries are tiny but the taste makes it worth it so dont get caught up in that. Size is a genetic thing and the ones you show are still on the small side. Some cultivars can be bigger than a baseball. Though they are hard to come by.
What June bearing variety do you recommend?
@@OO-fm3sw Purple wonder is good for one that is more available. Very nice flavor. Usually the ones with better flavor are ever bearing and produce less. I've heard Rutgers scarlet is good but I haven't tried it. I prefer Japanese varieties but they are not really available and are far more delicate plants. If you dont have alpines I highly recommend pineapple crush. They are totally different from normal strawberries. With all fruit, ripeness and not too much or too little water is key.
I can't believe that you grow strawberries for so long and can't get a decent crop. Maybe it is you? 😅😅😅 Seriously, you need to feed them before flowering, during, and after and you will get a good sized and sweet strawberries. Also, the way you grow them is completely wrong. In a tower? really? One thing is hydroponic and another is a soil tower.
You arent keeping your soil moisture high enuf in that contraption. I have b9th common kinds and those little ones need to be kept moist or ripen tiny. Dont blame using a more demanding variety if you arent successful with it just use an easier type. Not seriously thats what you get for growing plants in a pyramid, everyone knows pyramids are electricty generation plants so there.

Or instead of telling what you did, maybe you should have begun by asking yourself what you might have done wrong instead of the plants😊😊😊❤
you need to find like a spot on your land you don't really mess with that much and just put them in there and let him spiderwort and expand themselves and eventually the strawberries will get larger
