For this product showcase we spoke to Dr. Pete Armstrong, CEO and co-founder of Mixergy, to learn about Mixergy’s revolutionary smart hot water tank.
The Mixergy tank heats only what is needed rather than everything, which makes it faster, smaller, more efficient than a regular cylinder. This top-up heating design helps save homeowners money on their hot water bills and lower their carbon footprint.
You can install a Mixergy tank with a gas boiler today, connect to a solar PV system next year and even connect to a heat pump the year after that helping homeowners transition to low carbon with minimal disruption.

While heating is the complex and expensive one, and cooking is done with induction, it is so nice to see that hot water is now taken care of with such a really well thought out product. • When you say 20% reduction in gas consumption, is that 20% of what would have been used for hot water only? Approx 75% of system boilers gas consumption is used for Central Heating. So 20% total reduction would he 80% reduction for HW (which I doubt). Please do a video explaining how the mixergy can act as store for CH with solar thermal and/or Solar PV. You need more case studies for consumers to read. People who are interested in these are people who have knowledge of systems and want to research eg are not totally clueless people who rely on pros to design/install. Cheers

    @jimmyrh247@jimmyrh2473 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks Jimmy, just to reassure you we have over 1,000 units running in the field and have had very few issues. For us the battery analogy helps get across the point that these systems are very effective at absorbing surplus energy which can then be discharged as and when needed - if you were to use a regular battery to facilitate this service, it would be very expensive, very hard to deliver the same power output as an unvented cylinder and also degrade quickly if subjected to the depths of discharge these systems are capable of! Yes, not exactly the same, but a useful analogy nonetheless we think ;)

  • Very interesting bit of kit, but can the technology be used to charge a Thermal Store? The annual space heating demand for a typical UK house is at least five times that of hot water, so the potential benefit (both to the householder and grid storage) is that much greater. I had a Thermal Store made to fit my airing cupboard a couple of years ago, it has inputs from biomass, solar thermal, solar PV (via Solar iBoost) and potential to connect a woodburner. The heat is used for both radiators and (via a plate-heat exchanger) hot water. The idea of utilising one of the two immersion heaters to absorb cheap/free electricity really appeals...

  • Aside from it being a hot water tank I've no idea what this is, and I've watched the video

    @PaulPhillipsUK@PaulPhillipsUK3 жыл бұрын
    • We've had that feedback through a number of comments Paul, apologies - in a nutshell the key benefits are: 1. The tank only heats what you need rather than the whole system in one go (this means a) it reduces heat losses (by around half), b) it is much quicker at getting to a useful temperature since you start out by only heating a small amount (rather than waiting ages for a full tank from cold, this can be around 5 times faster for an electric system and about twice as fast for a gas tank) 2. You can see how much hot water is in the tank using the simple gauge on the side of it - this means no more shower roullette! you can also see the state of charge on the Mixergy app if you'd like to control on your smart phone, or just ask Google/Alexa if that's your thing 3. The tank can learn your consumption and optimise its schedule against your energy tariff - most Mixergy tanks only need to heat to around 50% of their capacity for most customers - some customers get paid to heat what they need when electricity prices are negative! Those are the top 3 - but other benefits include: reduced boiler cycling to reduce gas consumption (between 12% to 20% saving) and heat-pump ready - meaning you wont need to swap the tank if you get a heat-pump in the future I hope this helps! but if you need more info, please visit our website on www.mixergy.co.uk

    @colinrickman4126@colinrickman41263 жыл бұрын

    • The Mixergy tank heats only what is needed rather than everything??? Really??? That should have been talked about more and explained in more detail. IMHO.... Does the tank have seperate chambers??? How does it only heat "what is needed" like a tankless water heater can? I thought its stores hot water from excess cheap electric rate off peak period? NVM I found how it works in earlier post, that shows it uses hotter water off the top if the tank 1st, without mixing it with the incoming colder water, like standard HWT does.... Stratifying the heating process, no wonder the tank has to be built so strong. To deal with increased pressure at the top if the tank. And no wonder it's all why it needs to be so smart to be able to know the level of the temperature gradient. Nice idea, wonder how much more it cost vs a high end HWT.

  • If you have control of the immersion heater already surely you are only a couple of wi-fi current transformers away from being able to have it function as it's own solar diverter avoiding a 3rd party product and yet another app! Perhaps it's just on/off immersion control rather than PWM? Your smart tech could then look at the upcomming energy price\export rate, know the household habits and decide if you'd make\save more money by exporting the energy at peak time or dumping it into the tank. I don't think any diverters do that yet. Feature request!

  • One slightly misleading comment is the reference to Dinorwig. The point of Dinorwig isn't to take excess energy off the grid, it's to then use that energy later at peak demands. While these devices can shift load, that's not quite the same thing.

    @LudvigIndestrucable@LudvigIndestrucable3 жыл бұрын
    • That's true Ludvig - though the Mixergy Fleet is able to turn down as well as up so, across a large enough fleet, the service becomes comparable...

      @mixergyltd6286@mixergyltd62863 жыл бұрын
    • @@mixergyltd6286 I am not trying to denigrate the usefulness of the technology and its importance in further a smarter grid, but I really don't think it is comparable to pumped hydro storage. The advantage of Dinorwig isn't for load balancing as already mentioned, it's that at peak points of 4:30-7pm when people are turning on ovens and kettles, it can provide energy to respond to demand. The majority of water heating isn't on during these times anyway since most hot water hasn't been used during the day (so tanks are up to heat) and hot water isn't used much during this peak, so you're not able to have the 'virtual generation' of subtracting demand as there's not going to be much there to subtract. Unless the stored heat can be used towards evening energy use (most people don't fill their kettles from the hotwater tap, though maybe they should?) it's not helping deal with demand surge like a hydro storage facility.

  • If they last 30 years, how do they cope in areas with limescale? That's what normally kills boilers in the end where I live. When I had a new boiler 10 years ago they had huge problems trying to lift the old one out because of the weight of the scale inside.

    @bibliotek42@bibliotek423 жыл бұрын
    • Hey, good question, our systems are actually less susceptible to scale problems since the heating elements and coils are towards the top of the cylinder. This means that scale will settle at the bottom without enveloping heat transfer surfaces and impacting on efficiency. It is possible to de-scale a system with a dosing treatment or reduce the problem from the outset with a water softner in very hard water areas. We have many systems in places like Oxford and Reading which have very hard water and they have been operating without incident.

      @mixergyltd6286@mixergyltd62863 жыл бұрын
    • As far as I can tell, these tanks will cope fairly well with limescale. The heating elements at the top (and bottom) looks like they can be removed, then cleaned or replaced. The whole premise of the heat pump heat exchanger is that it's external: siphon cold water from the bottom, feed it through the heat exchanger, which has hot heat pump water, feed the freshly-heated water back in at the top. Any problems involve replacing the heat exchanger, not disassembling the tank. The internal coils for a boiler might not cope quite as well. All this said, this is a hot water tank, not a boiler. There's less heating of water going on in this tank than in a boiler, so it'll probably just naturally get less limescale, even without factoring design features.

I'm wondering if it provides hot water on demand, and isn't like those old tanks where you could run out of hot water half way through a shower!

    @GeorgeThoughts@GeorgeThoughts3 жыл бұрын
    • That's great! we're big fans of lots of solar : ) - by heating only what you need the system is basically like 'on-demand' and at the very least recovers up to 5 times faster than a conventional system. It all depends on what sort of heating system this works with. For a standard electric system, from cold you can get enough heat for a shower in about 20 minutes (rather than 2 hours or more) and if you have a gas boiler, it can more or less run instantaneously depending on the power level.

    • Hi, I've been looking into this too as I would be keen have hot water all the time and to save CO2 where possible, but not if I can't break even financially, however looking at this quote "A typical cylinder will lose 1.5 kW hours a day through standing losses. A Mixergy cylinder charged to 20% has a standing loss of 0.54 kW hours a day." LInk: www.mixergy.co.uk/what-about-decarbonisation-of-water/#:~:text=The%20tank%20can%20automatically%20adjust%20the%20hot%20water,standing%20loss%20of%200.54%20kW%20hours%20a%20day. This is a delta of 1KW Hours per day. I am on gas [I would like move, ASHP but it isn't economically viable] , even if I was on Electricity this would only be 15 pence per day i.e. ~£50 per year. The cost of the Mixery tanks start at £1400 . The total cost of heating water on electricity seems to be about £1.20 per day based on this estimate for a 125 Litre tank at 8 KWH - www.thegreenage.co.uk/much-electricity-immersion-heater-use/. However I think if you are on Electric, you would go for Economy Seven and heat it then for half that price. Since I am on gas, I am only paying 50 pence per day in total. Therefor If you are on Gas or Economy 7, you would save only £25 per year over a normal tank and that is when the Mixergy is at 20%. That is a very low charge, they haven't stated what the loss is at a higher charge. I would love for somebody to prove me wrong on the above. I don't mind putting money in now and breaking even after 10 years, but I really can't see how this stacks up. I have solar panels already and they make sense, but I am struggling to find any technology that can reduce my Carbon footprint but that is not an economic penalty. Things like the Eddi might make sense if you have Electric, but seems a bit selfish if you have gas i.e. you redirect your electricity to charge your water but then might be a gas power station producing emissions to make the electricity that you have used. Sorry this started off as an answer and ended up as a wee rant. Hope it was helpful.
