In this episode I interview Dirty Loops, delving into the intricacies of their unique sound and inspiration behind their viral covers of Justin Bieber, Adele, and Britney Spears. We also explore the impact of digital innovation on their career and the influence they've had on bands navigating the evolving social media landscape.

We had a great time! Thank you so much for having us Rick!!
You guys are amazing, my 9 and 6 year old love your music, keep it coming, hopefully you play in Australia soon 😁✌️🙏
Great interview 👏👏👏🥂
A few years back a friend sent me a link to Work Shit Out which I got at 4am. I was so blown away just listening on the tablet. This was the stuff.. I ran into the music room and put it on the big system. I had been in a funk believing there was nothing of any value or quality in contemporary music. You shattered that illusion with music that was so invigorating , tight, skillful and downright fun. Great to see you at Rick's place.
you guys are great musicians! just keep going!
Thank you for signing my bass backplate in Chicago! The one with the purple lights in the neck. Amazing gig!!!
First influence Jonah named is Lyle Mays. So happy always to hear Lyle's name. I hear it in Jonah's playing!
Lyle Mays ended up removed from the music scene, disillusioned. He was never recognized in life for the value of what he did, personally I think he is one of the best pianists after Bill Evans. Not only in his quality as a pianist but in the innovativeness of his sounds. Lyle was also a great person, a great gourmet and coach of his city's children's soccer team. Speaking of musicians, Milton Nascimento told me what a wonderful person he was. I miss his presence every day.
the influence is noticeable
Absolutely! You can especially hear the Lyle Mays influence in Jonah's "Work Shit Out" piano solo.
Oh he only named ledgends hey? Aha great stuff
@@DougRawady ... or his "Forever Young" synth solo...
Such an icredible Band. They deserve so much more attention. Thank you Rick!
I think they could’ve been posted on the main channel, since they really do deserve more fans!
Just saw them in Nashville, those guys are TIGHT. You also wouldn't be shocked that there wasn't a single non musician in the crowd lol.
Dirty Loops makes music for musicians. The only way I can put it. It's amazing.
Saw them in Charlotte, NC a few years back. They’re all so skilled it’s crazy
Saw in SF 2 weeks ago. They asked musicians to raise their hands and all went up
'Work Shit Out' is a masterclass in music on so many levels: composition, arranging, musicianship, production, etc. Rick, I would love to see/hear you do a breakdown of this song. My jaw dropped the first time I heard it - and it still floors me after multiple listens.
Such dopey lyrics, then an insanely great impressionistic Chopinesque/Lyle Mays/Pat Metheny Group piano solo, then the greatest drum solo ever to be hidden inside a pop song, then it ends all too soon. I wish it had a face-melting Henrik Linder bass solo as well.
Finally, Dirty Loops at Rick Beato, been waiting for years!
Same 👍
Probably the best group I've ever seen live. These guys are unbelievably tight and leave it all on the stage
I'm a simple girl. I see the Dirty Loops, and I click.
For me personally, they are the discovery of the century
True humble artists. Free from social media. Only focused on music THANK YOU!!!!
Swedish people are always soooooo humble. These guys are great!!
These guys cook, plain and simple ..a real band of players, rare in today's world of music
I didn’t know of their cooking videos .
@@humanactivated1017 delicious
HOLY CRAP. After watching YOUR interview I've spent the next few hours educating myself on the music of Dirty Loops. THANK YOU RICK Great music is indeed being made by these incredible YOUNG musicians. As soon as they mentioned Lyle Mays I knew "this aint just some average band."
Dirty Loops are from another planet...Their musicianship/creativity are like no other......One of the dopest band in the world.
They are not from another Romany they are from Sveeden.
@@humanactivated1017 U really being sarcastic right? As i had no intention that anyone in their right mind would really believe they are not from earth...lol...How old are you?
Within seconds of hearing Dirty Loops for the first time, I realized I will never be anything close to what you can call "talented" when it comes to music. Three of the most brilliant minds you will find. Looking forward to listening to this one
OMG! I never would have expected to see them interviewed here! What a great time with an amazing band
I just saw them in Vancouver. I'm not typically keen on rock concerts that demand hours of standing, but as a novice bass player, I couldn't pass up the chance to witness a bass god up close. The next day's backache? Completely worth it!
Just saw Dirty Loops live a month or so ago and barely knew who they were. They were absolutely fucking incredible. Just unreal.
Omg I can't believe how humble they are!! They're top notch musicians 🙌 thx Rick❤
Thousands upon thousands of bands put up videos online. The difference is some bands are just so good, that once it starts playing, the person listening is fully engaged. The first time I saw a Dirty Loop video it was the Baby tune... and it was insanely great and I watched it many times.
Love their Lady Gaga cover of “Just Dance” as well! Damn, every single one of their covers and songs!! 🔥🔥🔥
100% this. Its not about marketing with technical music. Its about mixing. Composition, video quality, and talent. With pop bands its just who you know
I always felt there were two outstanding bands from the last decade still to be interviewed by your goodself. Ok, you got the Loops and now we just need an interview with Knower!
As an old timer jazz pianist, it gives me a good feeling that so many fusion, jazz, funk bands are having a lot of success with young listeners. It would seem the public has a more sophisticated listening taste than I used to give them credit for.
I feel that too. There is hope for the future in some of the young.
I guess with things like Spotify and You Tube it's a lot easier to get exposed to these genres. It doesn't cost anything to listen and unlike myself, I was always very picky with my album purchase back in the day and likely missed out on a lot.
A band made for musicians. Love it.
I can't get out of my head the musical explosion that could have been the encounter between Michael Jckson and Dirty Loops, who drew a lot of inspiration from him. Listen to Rock You, it's a track we'd have loved to have had at the same time from a Jackson supercharged with Bad sauce, but even more Bad. Thank you Rick for this interview, and bravo for accepting to be the candid old man (which I am too) by asking questions that the band has trouble answering. They too seem a little overwhelmed by young people, the real ones, for whom music is an earful of chewing gum that they experience like everything else through the founding, structuring and vital element that is the iPhone.
Thank you Rick for giving them airtime. DL has, almost single-handedly, renewed my faith in modern music.
These guys are brilliant. The Turbo album that they did with Cory Wong during the pandemic was absolutely dope too, considering they did it all remotely.
Yeah, that collab was something else…. 🔥🔥🔥
Agree. It was also an unexpected collab. I managed to discover a lot of music during Covid lockdowns! But I’m glad I can see my favourite local jazz band (The Consouls) do their vgm jazz thing live again. Streams are great but nothing beats being in the room.
@@cooldebt absolutely! Live’s the best!
I was SO happy to see these guys in your studio!! I only recently became aware of Dirty Loops. I was (and I remain) absolutely floored by these guys! I have introduced them to anyone who will listen! Thank you for this interview! (edited to add... After hearing Jona mention the Metheny tune Heat of the Day. I listened. I could HEAR how that inspires Jonah to this day. Amazing!)
We saw them live in San Francisco in 2014 just as they were getting started. Saw them again last week. So stoked at the success and recognition they are getting
Dirty Loops changed a lot things in music. It’s beautiful. Thank you Dirty Loops.
An absolutely amazing band. Their musicianship is off the charts.
I was watching (For about the 50th time) DL playing "Work Sh*t Out" and as Jonah was doing his solo, I thought to myself "He would probably be a FANTASTIC movie score writer" And here he is, saying he wants to get into movie score composing!
His Phrasing and expression is way beyond his years. That spatial section in WSO is mindblastingly mature...
The guy who strikes me as closest to the sheer melodic virtuosity of the Dirty Loops guys is Valeriy Stepanov out of Russia. His fusion project and other things he does is just sublime if you love fusion and pop influences melded together in an incomparable way. He's also a killer singer and guitarist - maybe Jonah should give him a call.
That would be great!
I love their original music! I was talking with my bassist about Dirty Loops and how they should be on the charts instead of boring TikTok loops. Incredible playing and vocals.
Incredible band. Took my daughter to see them about 10 years ago in Toronto. I was in my late 50s and she was mid 20's and we both loved them. In fact after the concert she said this is my new favorite band.
totally underrated band, they definitely deserve more. Cheers up for naming Lyle Mays, incredible musician.
Two things: Social media is obviously the modern way for artists to promote their work but the artists talked about, Jacob, Vulf, Snarky, Corey and DL are the most talented musicians in the world today who also have the visual production talent as well. Another thing they all have in common which I believe is natural because of their talents is widespread collaboration. And please let me tell you a quick DL story; We purchased their M&G package really only to get early admission because there’s no way we weren’t getting to the rail for their show. I am not a musician, I can only play the volume knob on my stereo but these three men were so gracious. They were actually standing in front of the stage waiting to greet our group as we entered the venue. They made a point to shake hands and greet everybody individually. They invited the group on stage to see and talk about all the gear. They were so humble and so welcoming. As people they left such a positive impression on me. As for the shows, I’ve seen all of the modern musicians mentioned and DL certainty fits in this elite group of musicians. I wish they played more shows in the Northeast on this tour. We did two shows and I tried and tried to get to more but timing and last minute expensive flights just couldn’t work for me. I hope they come back this way sooner than later!! We saw JC last night and we’ll also see him in NYC Friday night. I didn’t think it was possible for JC to perform better than the last tour but he has raised the bar again!! Or as we all know, musically He is “the bar”. Stunning performance on many levels. Just like the lyric Lin wrote; “Look around…. We’re so lucky to be alive right now” Rock on!!
Great stories, Brian! Great comment and thoughts too 👍 I have yet to see DLoops or Jacob live, but think these would be the performances of a lifetime! ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The new setup is great Rick ! This table will soon become THE table for interviews! And what a blast to see them here, love these guys !!
You can't not love these guys, they're just brilliant in so many ways.❤
How did this not make the main channel????
Absolutely amazing group! The playing is brilliant , the concept is Brilliant . Very sensible personalities also very simple into the point no complications. Just pure music. Much respect to you guys
Literally my favorite band right now. Dirty Loops are unreal.
Dirty Loops is a modern-day Rush making dance pop, and it's glorious.
Wholesome swedish music geniuses at work! 🤩👌🏻
Brecker Bros in Barcelona is amazing, so happy to hear a shout out
I discovered them through that NAMM performance of Just Dance. And that's when Henrik became my favorite bassist ever. He thumps, slaps, nails killer pulloffs, and harmonics. On a six string Mattison with tempered frets. He is a bassist's bassist.
I would have not heard of Dirty Loops were it not for KZhead. I was watching various bass players like Federico Malaman, drummers like Gergo Borlai, keyboard players like Valeriy Stepanov, etc. and the KZhead algorithm suggested that I might like this band. The algorithm was correct! I love Dirty Loops. Excellent musicians and great music.
Imagine a collab between Valery AND these Cats.
Valeriy is beyond outstanding, a true virtuoso who can play ALL the instruments. Sadly here in the west, nobody gives Russians the respect they deserve as the world-class musicians they are... can't we all just get along?
@@asb3pe Russians are not their current thug warmongering dictator-for-life government. Emigrate, denounce Putin, feature blue-over-yellow and "Slava Ukraini" and everyone will get along fine. Easier said than done, I know.
These guys’ talent speaks for itself…. But I’m glad social media has served them (and the world) so well, in getting their music to us. Thank you, Rick and Dirty Loops.
Utterly original experience listening to these guys... and they seem equally down to earth in this interview.
30:47 I love the awkward and shy faces when they present the song to Rick. Love Dirty loops and this new skrillex style
They certainly aren't full of themselves, really down to earth nice guys.
These guys are absolutely phenomenal musicians. Every song they release is mindblowing. Also, pluss points for great sense of subtle humor.
Proud to be Swedish! Tack Rick Beato, du är en fantastisk intervjuare.🤩
Dear Rick, i couldn't believe it: my favorite KZheadr Rick interviewing my favorite band Dirty Loops. Thank you so much! Greetings from lower bavaria!
This is so exciting!!! I saw them in LA on April 13. They are amazing. But why didn't they make the cut to the regular Rick Beato channel?
One of my favorite artists from Sweden that nearly NOBODY knows about, Salem Al Fakir, opened my eyes to the incredible talent coming from that country! Discovered him around the mid 2000s and had a similar sound to Dirty Loops, less on the jazz fusion but heavy on the soul/r&b, gospel, and rock, but production style was very similar. He’s mainly a violinist, so the depth of his music stems mostly from orchestral styles. Sweden is definitely powerhouse of musicians!
Must check out Salem! 🎻🎻🎻
@@ingefiddle definitely check out his first album This Is Who I Am. It’s not on any streaming service unfortunately 😞 It’s here on YT or I’m sure you can find a bootleg somewhere. It’s definitely an unskipable album! I promise you won’t skip a track. Although, his voice might throw you off in the beginning. I know it did for me lol
Humble (major) talent is so infectious! These guys are a breath of fresh air.
I feel like I've been living under a rock. Why have I never heard of Dirty Loops? Thank you so much Rick for the interview. I'm listening to everything they have done and they are amazing. I definItely hear Lyle Mays in Jonah's playing. In some of their early videos, the arrangements sound to me like some of the things Ross and Gino Vanelli did in the 70s only much funkier.
Lyle 🎹😊…even a cursory KZhead search for Lyle demonstrates how immensely deeply musicians are impacted by him, and feel his loss 🎶
Humble Swedes! “Jantenlagen” is alive and well with these phenomenal musicians. You guys are awesome!
Arron's drums always have the Porcaro tuned sound. Love it !
have been following dirty loops since the "baby" era they are just truly incredible, and ow gosh their Runaway song is just a masterpiece
I love how the build-up to and the piano solo in Work Shit Out is a pure homage to "The Heat of the Day".
…everyone politician in Sweden that wants to cut down the contribution for culture and musicschools should listen to this. Music education and the ability to borrow intrument and have place for rehersal is SO important! 🙌🇸🇪
Great interview from Rick focusing on how they create their amazing sound. Loved these guys since they came out with "Just Dance". The BEST!
Yes, “Just Dance” absolutely rocks!!!
I found the loops on youtube. I was amazed. You don’t get artists of this quality on radio. Have bought their albums. Really sensational band.
Thank you Mr Beato for this interview! Really great! Bra jobbat grabbar! :) :)
😍😍😍Thank you Rick, for this one! They need to be seen, they need to be heard!
Whoever Aron's drum tech is is a complete boss. Went to their Denver show, and that snare was the best sounding snare I've ever heard. Holy cow.
Speaking of holy cows, there are "moo" sound Easter eggs in at least two of their videos.
Finally Rick mentions Cory Wong. I'd love to hear them in conversation.
This band brought me out of a terrible funk a few years back. I heard 'Follow the Light' and Dirty Loops changed my life. I went through their entire catalogue and was blown away by the quality of their music. I wish they would come to Australia. I'd love to see them live. That would be amazing.
I dream about Rick doing an interview with Jonah alone at the piano, singing and playing. And two more with each one of the other two awesome players.
These guys are each incredible, but Henrik is absolutely insane. ❤
I’d love to see a collab with them and Matteo Mancuso … that’d be soooo good
I remember the first time I heard Dirty Loops on KZhead, that first black and white video, I was backstage at a festival in Switzerland and I grabbed the rest of the band and shared it around everyone to see… these guys are ‘musicians musicians’ we all agreed. Fast forward to several years later we were doing a show in Japan and Dirty Loops were in town also doing a show the following night. We invited them to ours, and then we went to theirs. Top humans in real life too!
Whooooo…! Great 👍🫶🤘
Heinricks bass playing is sight to behold. hes up there with jaco, he is the jaco of 6 string bass
Thank you, Rick. I’ve been listening to them non-stop for the last 5 years. Refreshing to hear such musical talent.
Saw them live 10 years ago in Denver and again a few weeks ago and I was lucky enough to meet them. They are sooooo nice and generous. They have been my FAVORITE band since their first KZhead videos. I REALLY hope they don't wait another 10 years to return to the USA!
Loyal viewer. This is a first. This is the first artist you've talked about that I've been totally in the clouds about. HOLY F-CK BALLS. They are awesome! Pop artists who not only know who Lyle Mays is, but can play a little like him??? (piano solo on "Work Shit Out" is serious) I now have a fantasy. 3 years from now I'll accidentally turn on the Grammy's and instead of the parade of off-key, simplistic, vomitus mediocrity that crosses that stage I'll see these 3 guys blowing everyone's minds...young kids and old musicians alike. Not a Taylor Swift in sight. Maybe just maybe the music is gonna be ok.
😉👍✌️🤟
What specific Grammy award winners do you have a beef about? Taylor Swift is a gifted songwriter. Beyonce and Adele are incredible singers. You don't like today's pop but pop hasn't been groundbreaking for decades.
Love this interview, these guys are so talented but also so chilled out…. You can tell they have good friendship and get to play music together.
"Work Sh** Out" is prl my most loved song and one reason is the piano solo that instantly reminded me of Lyle Mays. I saw Dirty Loops live one year ago in Berlin/Germany and I so love what they are doing!!! Very good interview.
Yes, and the Middle Eastern opening feel comes from the Pat Metheny Group track "Heat of the Day" that Jonah mentions. And Aron's drum solo is incredible. It's a wild ride. I wish Henrik unleashed the fury in it as well.
OMG, i didn't see this coming at all! my favorite band today by miles!
Sooo glad you got these guys on Rick and they deserve the exposure that your channel offers them so much 👏🏻👏🏻 Amazing musicians and so humble considering how gifted they are. REN is another artist who has done an amazing job at promoting his music on social media, especially KZhead.
I really like this band! I am looking forward to see them live in Stavanger, Norway, 3. mai 2024.
High fiving Henrick after a show is still by far my greatest musical achievement!
Wow! I hoped for that a very long time. I am a huge fan of Dirty Loops, saw them a few times live, and they are just breathtaking. I am so happy to see them together with Rick! Thank you!
These guys are amazing. I haven't kept up with what they've been doing, but those covers they did a few years ago blew my mind. They also recorded the best version of the Samsung Galaxy theme song.
That ringtone version is insane! ✌️😱🤘
"Work S**t Out" is insane. Jonah gave props to Pat Metheny Group's "The Heat of the Day," you can hear its influence. RIP Lyle Mays.
@@skierpage yes 👍
What a bunch of lovely dudes. Big fan. TY so much, Rick & Dirty Loops!
This is nothing but inspiring!!! Pretty cool. How much these guys really love each other and respect each other. Music. Is fun!
This is insane, I was watching your videos this morning eating breakfast and thought “I wonder when he’s going to interview Dirty Loops?” then this has been posted the same day. Spooky 👻
Now Iike these guys even more.
I LOVE Dirty Loops!! Thank you SO much for doing this interview, Rick!! And I hope that my two favorite groups work together a lot: Valeriy Stepanov and Dirty Loops! :)
I love it! I yelled "Woo!" like ten times. 😂
This was a meeting/interview I waited a long time to see. Four great persons!
This is such a great interview! Hearing Dirty Loops talk about bands like Pat Metheny Group (especially the Imaginary Day album which is my personal favorite), ToTo, Brecker Brothers and Chick Corea… made me stupidly giddy.
Thriller and Work Sh!t Out are mandatory listening for anyone with taste in music. (among other songs) Reaction channels helped "viral-ize" these guys and keep their stuff in the algorithm.
For me it’s Rock You and Lost in You. Check those out if you haven’t 😁
I could watch more 2 hours of that. Love Dirty Loops! Those dudes are legends!
These guys are insanely talented. I was so excited to hear their first couple of covers back then and played them over and over again. I even captured the audio of their videos so I could keep listening to them. For me it was their cover of 'Circus' that blew me away.
Circus! Yes!
I saw these guys at Irving Plaza a couple weeks ago. I bought tickets after seeing maybe three of their videos on YT and being blown away-- their cover of 'Thriller' with Corey Wong locked it down. They put on a hell of a show-- three massively talented guys. TIt will be nice to remember having seen them in one of my favorite venues when I can't afford to see them at MSG in a few years.
DL: the first videos were so bad RB: I think they're cool! DL: yeah ☺ They accept compliments so well
Yes, great players, great people, great band, great music. And wonderful that Lyle Mays gets such a solid mention. He was an exceptional player whose nuanced musicality made him unique in a world where flash and speed tend to dominate the narrative. We should also remind ourselves that these lads are all speaking English as a second language. They're articulate, personable, have great vocabulary and express themselves without the need for cliches and profanity (not that Rick would tolerate the latter). Plus, it's probably safe to say that bottles of Jack Daniels, a bag of medicinals and a bowl M&Ms with no brown ones are unlikely to be on their tour rider.
I won't see any band live that doesn't have a "No brown M&Ms!" contract rider. How do they know the venue set up for their 42-ton lighting truss without this essential check that it actually followed their tour specifications?!
I've loved this band since first contact, and I know a LOT of drummers here in Brazil who really never got the approach to tuning their kit, but I did, so really surprised to hear that the problem is not so local. If ever around I would be honored to tweak your DW, the only kit I would trade for mine. Best of luck to the band and congrats on the channel.
