This video took about 16 hours to render at approximately 30 seconds per frame using Blender's "Cycles" engine. Plank Mania is my first computer animation and uses segmented rigid body physics simulations to generate realistic Kapla / Keva / Planko plank dominoes. Some interactions may not be entirely accurate, like single planks that push over entire towers :)

I can’t believe this is your first Blender render. You achieved something that can pass as real life on your first try!!! Very excited to see more renders from you in the future!!
Thank you so much for all the help on this! Trying to catch up to your computer skills
Damn this is blender? Good job.
That's awesome! Thanks for the link to my tutorial. 😃
Yeah you bet!
This is one of the most underrated channels on youtube. Like I never watch one of these videos and think "that was kind of a waste of my time." They're just flat-out joyful. They always lift my spirits
Thanks for the kind words!
The only thing that really gave away that this was happening in a digital space was the spooky emptiness of the space in which the dominos were falling and the slightly "off" look of the floor at closeups. So yeah, this is quite the accomplishment! Not a boring watch, either! :)
My wife said the wood floor looked like those fake laminate wood floors, haha. Thank you! Yes more realistic environments would be great to try, I'd love to stage one outdoors in a forest or something.
That was amazing! This has to be the most convincing domino animation I think i've ever seen, there's so much attention to detail in the way that things fall, it's crazy, great work!
Thank you! I made sure to model the planks at real-life scale so their falling speed would look right
This channel is like my childhood dream. I appreciate all your efforts and work!
Thanks very much! I remember enjoying Animusic when I was a kid and it's cool to try my hand at it now
Wow! Fantastic! I didn't realize this was a blender render until I read the comments. I'm an amatuer blender user, but I can tell this must have took some time to get it looking just right... I wonder how a Hotwheel render would look...
Yes there was a fair amount of problem-solving, tutorial-watching, and asking for help! At least I've worked a lot with actual planks so I had an idea of how they were supposed to fall and behave. And that Hot Wheels idea isn't bad....
Such incredibly satisfying sounds of the blocks falling down.
Nice one
I must say this video is truly a masterpiece
I watched the whole thing, was amazed at the 2-3 times it seemed like the rally failed but then kept going, and didn't realize until the very end when I noticed one of the planks was "broken" into shards that I realized what I watched wasn't real. Great job.
The colosseum finale kept clipping through the floor, so I put a large cube underneath it to catch the planks too. But there was actually a slight gap between the two hence why the planks appear to sink through or disappear or "split". In the future I'll use boxes for walls and floors instead of just planes
The rendering turned out really well; a huge step towards realism from the pre-rendered version! :)
Great camera work!
it looked so realistic with the camera movement and all that until i realised that it was an animation! i was nearly fooled thinking about how long this would have taken!! great work as always 5MMM!
I was convinced this was real. Good job
thank you
The saves almost enhance it
This is one of those videos where you start watchin' and wonderin' "I wonder how long it took for them to set this all up?" 🤔 But then You start to notice that the action is not built in real life; it's simply an animation... Yet that seems even more impressive, so you rush to read the description. 🏃♂️💨 "Whoa, up to 16 hours now! 😲 I don't know how that compares to a real set up, But it is probably a little quicker to fix digitally if you accidentally mess up. 😅"
True, it's nice to reset the planks in a bind If all you have to do is press "rewind"
Dude I genuinely thought that this was real until I looked at other comments Keep up the good work!
I would've gotten away with it too if it wasn't for those pesky other commenters
Really like the semi-spiral at 00:40 and the fireworks at 1:00 :) And the surprisingly satisfying sound of falling planks!
Oddly satisfying ♥
16 hours to render wow I would love to know all the parameters you used to do the same :)
Sure! I used Blender's "Cycles" engine and set it to 10 samples with a 30 second time limit per frame. Denoising and motion blur were on too. All the physics simulations were done in sections and baked to animation so the computer didn't have to calculate that on final rendering
Another great video, so satisfying!
Very cool I love the dominos.
Ok. So I know you have patience. This takes patience to another whole level though. I mean, I can't. I just can't fathom how long it took you to do this. As always, great job!
It took a while to get the hang of dominoes on the computer, but worth it to try a new style of video. Plus there are a lot of experienced people I asked for help! Thank you!
We watching this while hearing footsteps during 3am
Planks are something else in England ...great idea as well.
Awesome. For the first few seconds I thought it was real (as usual) then I noticed that the floor was too smooth. Excellent work!
0:18 I held my breath
I hope you resumed breathing at some point afterward
0:18 I held my breath too 0:25 I exhaled
That was impressive! It took me a min to realize I wasn't watching something you built in real life! Great work!
1:02 satisfying :)
Robert, I would have thought this was real had you not told me. Spectacular.
Thank you very much!
I see foxes in the description and I see a kapla fox. I’m satisfied
That is so cool!
Thanks Justin
The sound at 1:00 so satisfying
It was weird to have to record planks actually falling over after the video was done, but a fun foley challenge
I can’t wait for Plank Frontiers!
Haha I get it 🦔
Finally a new video, great job
After all these years
@@5MadMovieMakers yeah man
The room looks like a liminal space picture
reminds me of the Malcolm in the Middle episode where Hal wants to see Dewey knock over the domino structure he spent days on, and didn't see. So he recreated it and it still knocked over
It looks so real
Holy Crap!!! What can’t you do!
Holy cow !
A magnificent growing until the skyscraper collapses on itself 👏👏💯

@@5MadMovieMakers I'd say it turned out *VERY* cool 🤩
Good Work. I can see your hard work paid off in the video.
Thanks very much!

Watching this video at 480p I thought it was real
Wow, I’m impressed even I heard you be with Hevesh5 make a chain reaction even I watched it

can't believe this was all animation and not a real life domino setup. some really impressive stuff to create the illusion that this looks real, man! could've fooled me if i hadn't known this was animated.

Jeepers this looks like it took ages.
How did you make the last tower collapse?
@@Foxes_Forever BTW, it's a 3D render, not real life
wait this isn't real? wow that's actually amazing
Is that real or CGI?
It's real CGI

This video will turn 2 years old this November
But... it's fake.
great work!!! Came out amazing, also I use to watch your videos back in the day. Just subbed, can't wait to see what you come up with next
Ah thanks! Yeah I'm excited to dive more into Blender in the future! Thanks for the domino tutorial
