    • @@Y2Kr4SHM4N I was mostly referring to the look of the film, not all of its qualities. But, to be fair, I was waiting for one of these comments. Truth is, I think most of the Star Trek movies have aged well in terms of their special effects. The first movie has that classic 1970s feel, and you can feel the scope and money invested into the film. Wrath of Khan continues to make use of those tried-and-true special effects, but you could also tell the budget had been slashed, but Nicholas Meyer knew how to use what he had. Star Trek VI, I think is the best looking Trek movie with the original line-up, and like First Contact, has visually aged very, very well, not just in effects, but in costumes, lighting, styles, etc. Those are two special movies.

Voyager took a mysterious seemingly unstoppable force of nature and turned them into an every day run of the mill star trek alien. By the end of the series they were no more intimidating then the Romulans. A good example is Voyager alone being able to go toe to toe with a Borg tactical cube, the Borg equivalent of a warship. In the past regular Borg cubes were able to take on and destroy entire fleets of advanced federation star ships. The mere siting of a single cube caused panic and terror across the quadrant. But more importantly, it took the combined firepower of an entire (and quite capable and well armed) fleet to take advantage of that "weak" spot. The Defiant was one of the first ships to meet the Borg Cube as far as I am aware and while dozen of ships have been decimated, he kept her going all the way to Earth. Don't get me wrong, Worf probably ordered certain evasion patterns, engineers kept her heart going etc. but unless it was cut in a way we don't see it, Worf is already on the floor when the Defiant makes that last attack run but the Pilot just keeps going and firing without any shown hesitation nor protests the order to commit suicide by ramming the cube. Makes me wonder just how battle-hardened that officer is as I believe this is meant to take place during the Dominion War and hope any ship he transferred to after this can appreciate his skill.

Don't get me wrong, telling off aliens by using subparagraphs of treaties is funny and all, but staring down Worf and killing Borg is in a class by itself.

  • Something tells me they dimmed the light on the Defiant bridge set for the same reason they darkened the Enterprise D set in Generations; the set was made for TV, and showing it in full brightness on cinema screens would show imperfections, thus the set had to be shot in dim light. Except here they gave a good reason why the lights were out, because the ship was damaged.

    • There is a video analysing the battle with additional information somewhere on KZhead, apparently Starfleet had set up multiple perimeters that would damage the cube as much as possible and then retreat. All in all they did much better than the last time but it is still the Borg and they definitely didn't just sit with their hands under their asses the entire time, this cube was definitely stronger than the last one that came for earth.

Defiant has no weapons, no shields, and no main power. As soon as the Borg detected the Defiant moving in, they would give it priority attention, hold it in place with a tractor beam, and quickly blast it to pieces.
