Decades after the Homeworld War, the Hiigarans have begun to rebuild on their society on their reclaimed ancestral home. Vying for limited resources, the small mining Kiith Somtaaw eeks out an existence in the shadow of the greater clans, little knowing their significance in events to come...

    • From what I remember, because of how limited the Kiith-Somtaaw's access was to the Motherships Manufacturing facilities, they had to take turns to build whatever pieces they could in the small amount of time they were given. As such, their ships were meant to be assembled from larger, more easily manufactured chunks (hence being able to build Support & Utility Modules to flesh out their capabilities) The lower decks were one such chunk, so I'm sure they were able to just cut the ties that initially bound the two halves together. In a small way, adapting to those initial limitations may have saved the galaxy.

The voices in HW1 were very militaristic; there was emotion but always very controlled and understated. • Iirc the lore is that the Somtaaw made it into a very versatile ship since that's pretty much what they were good at; the other one is the Faal-Corum, its older sibling. Since the Somtaaw weren't originally a fighting caste, it only makes sense it's just a huge mining vessel. What tipped it tho (imo) is the fact that the crew of the Kuun-lan was quick on their feet and able to adapt, while also being lucky. They were able to flee from worse fights that would've taken them down ( like the one with the Clee-San at the start ) They were able to pick fights and learn more about their enemy while other fleets (presumably) just got devoured, and they were eventually able to pick up that ancient cannon while also getting access the Bentusi schematics for the souped up Acolyte. It feels convenient and silly at times, but never really contrived ( apart from maybe how dumb it can sometimes feel having thousands of resources banked up while having no SU to spare.

    • @@rintv3675 The manual also explained that Somtaaw had to basically gamble their future on this, needing to beg and negotiate just to get 45 days of work on the original mothership. Since they'd likely never get another chance, they built the original Faal Corum and then expanded on that with the Kuun Lan, focusing on making it versatile, adaptable and modular so they'd never need to use the mothership again.

Kiith Somtaaw's story from being mundane religous miners turning into an full-fledged warrior Kiith is just so absolutely heartwarming, thanks to the horrors they fought in Cataclysm. The feel of sistership and friendly souls on board that just does not have our experience and knowing that Caal-Chto was subverted somehow just added to the dread and hope. Loosing Caal-Chto was unfortunate, but they still were not that friendly to us. My heart would've sunk if I was Faal-Corum infected. I LOVE the voice acting in this game. All of it. In the first homeworld and in the second VO is professional even when things are dire - gives you a correct impression that they were chosen among the best and the most stress resistant people they had at the time. But here people are not fighters at all, they are not military - they are civilian miners, with some tech to fend off some small pirate incursions to have mining operation continue according to needed quotas.

They made an excellent decision to eschew expensive prerendered cutscenes that wouldn't have aged well, and rather use basic artistic sketches and narration and the game engine for cutscenes, focusing more on excellent sound work, writing, and voice acting, because those have aged like fine wine. I only wish they hadn't reused that betusi "we will not be bound!" death scream, as it's so well delivered that it burns into your brain, and you can't really use something like that multiple times or it just feels wrong. • At 13:25 you see the escape pod from the Nostromo, the ship from the original Alien movie from 1979. It was in that pod Ripley escaped and later crashed on the prison world in Aliens. I still have the original game box in my shelf. It's unopened. I bought it and downloaded a pirated copy just so I could have the box in the shelf. I guess it's worth some money now but I won't sell it. :P

  • Cataclysm had the best multi-player combat of any of the homework games.

  • Always found it funny that mission 13 was in the Kadesh nebula, makes you wonder if the beast had already destroyed the Kadeshii.
