  • Cool! I have a cameo in an MMA on Point video! Yeah man, that 12-6 elbow rule needs to go. As an MMA referee, most of the rules make sense from a safety perspective, and I feel good about enforcing them- but that’s never been one of them. We already have a perfectly defined list of legal scoring areas where you can use any kind of strike… except the evil 12-6 elbow that must not be named. It just doesn’t make sense.

  • Part of my thing with cutting so much weight is that the competitive advantage of fighting smaller guys is moot because some heavyweights are the only guys who fight at their natural weight, anyway. Everybody at 155 probably walks around at 20 or 30 pounds heavier even when they're in peak shape. I completely understand why weight classes need to exist, but if two guys are 185 at weigh-ins, but are both 208 when the fight actually happens it seems like it defeats the purpose.

    @melvinshine9841@melvinshine98412 жыл бұрын
    • But they DONT need 2 exist tho lol. They should have 2 stay around there weight like within 5 pds at All times the 2 weeks b4 a fight. The same way they have RANDOM drug tests they should Do random weight tests. If its CLEAR some1 was cutting a Bunch of weight 2 have an advantage then FINE THEM or suspend them. It makes NO SENSE. You can punish some1 for having weed in their system? From weeks b4? but weight cutting is okay? NOOO. They do it 4 an ADVANTAGE, if you're the BEST fighter Pd for pd then you should be able 2 stay AT YOUR WEIGHT and fight others AT YOUR WEIGHT. If every1 did that it wouldn't "Need 2 exist". In fact I'd argue it needs 2 NOT EXIST 2 determine who is actually the BEST FIGHTER. Also I wanna see 2 People in GREAT SHAPE fight each other. They arent at their BEST cuz they just pushed themselves for the weight cut. Its SOO COUNTER INTUITIVE and has ruined SOOO MANY Potential classics.

    • So imagine someone who is naturally 155 deciding to fight at 155, he'll have about 20-30 lbs disadvantage to his opponents. The fighters aren't cutting weight for advantages but to even the playing field. If weight cutting is legal, then there's no direct advantages to doing it because everyone is the same weight at the end of the day, but you are putting yourself at a disadvantage if you aren't doing it. The change shouldn't be from the fighters, but from the commission

    • @@PabloPickassoMusic Randomly texting fighters does not make sense. I am no fighter but I know that human weight is dynamic. The only way to end heavy weight cutting is to create more weight classes, that way it won't be a massive move up or massive move down for fighters. It's working for boxing, massive weight cutting still happens in boxing, but it's so little compared to mma. For example, if there's cruiserweight in the ufc, some LHWs would move up and some middleweights would move to LHW. The same thing happens if there's 165 some 155ers would move up and some other featherweights would also move up. It creates sort of a ripple effect

  • A good way to discourage dangerous weight cuts (in my opinion) would be to move weigh-ins closer to the fight, maybe morning of. If people know they won't have a day and a half to rehydrate I think you'd see a huge decline in fighters dehydrating to make weight.

    • It's literally the easiest solution ever. I mean, fuck, do it an hour before they fight. Do it 5 minutes before they walk out. How much weight can you put on in an hour without crushing your performance? Absolutely nothing. They won't because so many people would miss weight and entire cards would be ruined. There is some weird obsession with being stupidly overweight and cutting weight. Every sport with weight divisions could fix the stupid practice by just weighing within an hour of the event. You don't make weight, it counts as loss because you didn't abide by the rules.

  • It's so simple to fix the weight cutting issue. You weigh in like 30 minutes before the fight. Even if you rehydrate you're going to feel like shit for like 3 hours so that won't work, it forces the fighters to fight at there actual weights instead of cutting. Giving them a full ass day to rehydrate basically makes weighing in completely pointless.

    • In my opinion, a walk-around weight system maybe can work, maybe. Let's say we have two Welterweight fighters, one of them naturally weighs 179 lbs and the other one 181 lbs, and the upper limit of Welterweight is 185 lbs, there we don't have weight cutting so no fighter has advantage or is dehydrated on fight night.

      @javierolmedo502@javierolmedo5022 жыл бұрын
  • I think the solution to weight cutting is simple: cap it. In the state that I wrestled in in HS, you weighed in at the start of the season. You were then only allowed to cut a certain percentage of that total throughout the season, and only allowed so much each week. You create a regulatory body to develop a system to make sure people weigh in once a year, at or near their natural “walking” weight. You then create ranges of these “walking” weights for each weight class. These will be developed by a panel of fighters, doctors, and nutritionists. This will not only keep the fighters safer, but also even the playing field, by a substantial amount.

  • To avoid dangerous weight cuts just have a pre-fight weigh-in, same time the ref is checking fighters' gloves, mouth piece and body, if you're over the limit more than a pound or two as you're walking into the cage, then its the regular conditions of missed weight (cant win the title, 20% purse to opponent), if one fighter is almost skipping a weight class (like a lightweight at 154 fighting someone at 184, almost skipping welterweight going into middleweight) they should be able to pull out of the fight with no reprisals, because thats just an absurd mismatch that is not in the fighters contract, and if they agree, its purely exhibition fight and doesn't go to their record. Its so terrible for people who miss weight, that any cut they do will not be worth it. And improving fighter's health and safety outside the cage, and probably increasing performance. Nobody likes to watch a fight where both fighters get gassed halfway into the second round, where their coaches game plan finally starts working, and nearly every pro fighter says the weight cut is the worst part. They are already risking permanent injury, brain damage, and even death (although rare, still a possibility) so why add to the risk with arguably arbitrary weight classes. If both fighters weight 184.9 at weight in, and fight at 203 on fight night, why not just call the fight a light heavyweight since thats the weight they are actually fighting at? When was the last time you heard of a welterweight weighing in at 165 or lower?

    • Ed has a win streak going for a few fights, Angie is always in pretty competitive fights, getting screwed by the decisions almost to a comical effect at this point, her next opponent also has the same thing happen, so we'll probably somehow see both fighters get screwed when it goes to the decision. And Dana seems to love Alvey so he's keeping him around, wouldn't be surprised if he gets one more to take away the longest losing streak from BJ Penn.

  • Moving the weight cut to the morning of would be a good way to stop dangerous weight cutting, one other possibility is to use the same method as Judo (at least for international tournaments) for example where you have the weigh on the day before the tournament and on the day of the tournament you can be requested to weigh in again and your weight can't exceed the weight class + 5% on the tournament day. A solution for the weight cut issue could lead to better fighter activity as they wouldn't need as much time to recover after the fight.

  • We used to have to weigh in literally an hour or two before the match. Now they do weigh ins the day before...but everyone is required to have already gotten their BMI tested weeks earlier. There is a minimum weight one is allowed to cut down to based on one's BMI. Yes, I know BMI doesn't differentiate between muscle content and fat content, but I would suggest that a system in which each competitor is analyzed and given a minimum safe weight, and where weigh ins are on day of the fight, would easily mitigate the over cutting risks.

  • We need hydration tests like ONE championships, we just need to not be so sketchy about it lol and have it open to the public and unbiased commissions. I feel like ONE might let fighters have a size advantage if its in their best interest, like when DJ and other UFC fighters were fighting. They also don't test for drugs lol. But yeah hydration tests seem good. And maybe random weight tests during the lead-up to fights.

  • Easiest fix to the weight cutting problem? Easy, have the weigh-ins take place on the night of the fight. That alone will see people then fighting in their natural weight-class and not in a weight-loss competition. You can then increase the weigh-in discrepancy to perhaps +5lbs and if a fighter misses weight, then their purse is forfeited to their opponent. It would solve it all overnight.

  • "10 point must system" is called that because one fighter MUST get 10 points for the round. So in the situation fighter "A" scores a knockdown and on his way to a 10-8 round, then HIMSELF gets knocked down by fighter B in a flash knocckdown in the same round, the score would be 10-9 instead of 9-8. One fighter MUST have 10 points, so they add points to both fighters until one person has 10 points each round. No matter what happened during the round.

    @Notpoop906@Notpoop9062 жыл бұрын
  • The way to fix weight cutting is by randomly weighing each fighters at least 3 or 4 times a year and they then fight at what they are typically walking around at. So if a fighter weighs in between 145lbs and 165lbs throughout the course of the last twelve months then they fight at 155 in their next fight and they are weighed before the fight to make sure they both weigh the same. Its pretty simple really

  • If you want to eliminate weight cut, then you need to have a monitoring system, something similar to what IJF used to do, where competitors are monitored over a period of time, testing their weight, hydration, muscular density, and overall health condition. However this requires tweaking, as that also makes it not possible to get fixed opponents like in boxing and mma.

    @PokeProfPoke@PokeProfPoke2 жыл бұрын
    • The only way to end heavy weight cutting is to create more weight classes, that way it won't be a massive move up or massive move down for fighters. It creates sort of a ripple effect. When people like Costa remember that they'd be fighting some heavyweights if they moved to LHW, they'd prefer to rather cut weight and stay in their weight class. With more weight classes, the weight differences is kinda spread out, and the whole idea weight advantage sort of disappears.
