When you watch these videos of Waldner now, in the year 2020, you see why he was such a special talent...in any sport, someone like Waldner is a once-in-a-century type of athlete.
I was at this game with my dad :) One of my best memories from my childhood
Waldner was the 'ice-man' of ping-pong in resemblance with Borg in tennis, but even tougher at the moments where it all counts. Simply the world-wide ping-pong genious from Sweden! 👌👍
There was a standing ovation that lasted for minutes after the match. One of the very moments of modern table tennis!
The Chinese have always shown respect for Waldner as he managed to compete closely with everyone they’ve thrown at him over decades.
I miss the 21 point, 5 serve game. So much better than what we have now.
why they, ittf, have done this?
@@borisgraell They thought it would be better for TV, so you can have commercial breaks in between shorter games. And, I suppose, they thought shorter games would bring more intensity.. I personally don't like the 11 point games. A couple of nets and edges and that might be the game.
16 points would have been acceptable. But 11 points is a little tight for a good game. First of all, 11 points game is more stressful than 16 or 21 points. Because there must not allow a mistake.
Simple serve from Waldner..but all magic tric
@@borisgraellbecause no chance to beat china all 5 point in serve..😂
One of the best matches I have seen brilliant Jan definitely the GOAT. Take care and stay safe mate. Tom.
To shut down the 😀controversies, I propose a new acronym: GSOAT, Greatest Swedish Of All Times
One of the few matches were you can clearly see nerves getting to Waldner! But he won anyway. Kong forced Waldner to play his weaknesses. Great match!
unbelievable how deadly waldner's forehand was
Waldner has the top forehand structure in the world, using waist and leg to force instead of using arm and hand. Now many european players's forehand are awkward and not standard,I think ITTF should arrange good coachs in the west instead of making the ball bigger to prevent chinese player from taking the championship.
But his forehand is nothing compare to Ma Long and Fan Zhendong.
And mcenroes forehand is nothing to compare with nadals, whats your point idiot?
. And i would love to see waldner in this time,he would dominate even moore against these stupid robots,no player could change hes style to beat hes opponent like he did, thats why he old and fat could beat the shit out of the world 15 years after hes prime in 2004
Waldner was a boss in the table Tennis arena
What a big game!!!
huge win for Waldner. Kong was scary
Great by Waldner,he should have won this wttc to,according to himself the semi loss to Ma Lin is hes worst ever loss.
the ever green tree
That backhand 👌
Classic
Absolutely gorgeous
the 38mm was supposed to be faster but Waldner and Kong looked slow compared to today's game
Kong had big trouble when using FH to receive Waldner's BH short serve. Why Kong not used his BH receive more?
Because all players in those days had more touch with their fh.There was Persson who could push with the backhand even from the fh side, but he has much bigger wing span. Also receiving with the bh would make a player more vulnerable to shots to the body.
The goat waldner
Are You crazy 😂
Observe Waldner only looking directly at the ball and racket and his opponent in the corner of the eye during serves.
17:22 table tennis is a dangerous sport
1:30 Referee has same clothing style as famous ping pong fanatic Dwight Schrute.

Noch bis 21.
Waldner is good//
He was more than just "good", lol.

Might not be a popular opinion, but I'm amazed how much TT has evolved in the last 20+ years. This is like local club level playing now...
That’s a stupid comment
You just don't know anything about the game.
The game now is faster than during waldners heydays
well funnily enough waldner said a few years ago that he STILL beats half of the swedish pros but that his stamina is getting to him (Sure they are not on the absolute worlds elite) but man "local club level", really?
What an absolute shitty opinion. Watch other Waldners matches like against Ma Wenge in 95 or against Ma Lin in 99. They played with much more feeling and they did not play slower back then
@arne hammarlid
Look carefully at around 7:28. The ping pong ball never really (or it seems) touch the table as if Kong Linghui catched the ball in mid air. It could be due to the poor quality of the video, but I couldn't hear the sound from the ball hitting the table either.
Watch it speed 0.5
Think it bounced OK. Sound quality not great. And if he'd volleyed it with the ball still dropping (with that steep/closed bat angle) the ball would've gone straight into the net, I reckon!
I think perhaps it hit the white line in the corner, then sound can be different.

Kong
Waldner lost to Kong in the Olympics, then the Asians took over ever since.
Game is so much faster now.
No it's not.
@@johnheisenberg7162 It is.
@@KelpieMindTricks How can it be faster today, when it was intentionally slowed down in the past by increasing the ball size from 38mm to 40mm and making speed glue illegal in order to create longer races and make it more TV-friendly? The ball is moving at snail pace today compared to the late 90's.
@@johnheisenberg7162 If you've played competitively you'd know that the ball changed reduced speed marginally and didn't keep up with the development of the athletes. Manufacturers have worked their way around speed glue with various tensor approaches combined with glues that overall game the game faster. Are you seriously telling me table tennis as a game is slower now than 24 years ago?
@@KelpieMindTricks I used to play competitively in the late 90's/early 00's. The focus of my argument was that the ball used to move at a higher speed in the past. To clarify, I'm not saying that the overall game of table tennis hasn't developed and become more dynamic over the years. But I doubt that athlete development and advancements in racket technology has been enough to compensate for the changes. But I might be wrong. Are there any specific statistics or measurements available that compare the ball velocity in table tennis between different eras, such as changes in ball size or the use of speed glue?
Waldners arm blocks the serve.
At the time, there was no rule against doing so. In fact, most top players at this time did the same.

Yes, and even worse, he forces the opponent to play the set to 21 instead of 11. Magic.
