Hot summer streets and the pavements are burning, I sit around
Trying to smile, but the air is so heavy and dry
Strange voices are saying (What did they say?)
Things I can't understand
It's too close for comfort, this heat has got right out of hand
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone
The city is crowded, my friends are away and I'm on my own
It's too hot to handle so I got to get up and go
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone
You're not the only one
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
(Leaving me) Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone
It's a cruel, cruel summer
Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel, cruel summer
Now you're gone
You're not the only one
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
(Leaving me) Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone
You're not the only one
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
(Leaving me) Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer

Mad respect to anyone who is still listening to this masterpiece.
Jonathan Cooper. 1984!!!!!! well. summer `84
The college years....so long ago!

Absolutely. We survived back in the 80's without phones and life was good

Totally agree..I grew up in the 60's...even better!
80's was so soft on the skin

Yes, absolutely!
Gone but never forgotten..80s and 90s will forever live on with us.
As a metalhead, I can say without shame that I love this song. The structure, the chord changes, the backing vocals, everything is on point.
To me, the best part is the simplicity. The music video could have been made for a few grand, the dancing isn't spectacular (yet seems real), and the women are clearly having fun. As a bonus to a metalhead, check out Cry for the Earth Bounds by Ensiferum if you never have. ;)
Same without shame
Same. It's got serious ABBA vibes.

Another metalhead here. I fully agree with you! I have the same with other classic songs like Obsession from Animotion or Walk like a Egyptian from The Bangles. Great songs!
This song makes you want to walk around the city on a Sunday afternoon, just enjoying the heat, the city and your own company.
But don't throw bananas at cop cars,,,,LOL. My little brother when he was 7 tossed a water balloon at one,,,,LOL.

It was so much fun. break dancing, bicycle groups of kids going to the pubic pool, everyone always outside playing sports or with a radio and waiting on that new 80 hit to come on so you could dance. My sisters making up routines to the music. Parents did worry about where you were just come home before the street light came on. Great fun.

This song was made in 1983. It got lost in tunes like "Every Breath You Take" by The Police, "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson, "Africa" by Toto, and "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" by The Culture Club. But it STILL is one of the best songs of that year. It just popped into my head for no reason today and here I am 🙂 That's the power of good music. It never really goes away.
The song never went away. I've heard it every summer for the last 40 years

Summer can indeed be very cruel. This song reminds me of lonely summer days.
Happy 40th birthday to Cruel Summer. Forty years ago today, Monday June 27, 1983, Cruel Summer was released. This song will stay in my memory forever, because it also embodies my attitude towards life in the 80s and that is what made the great music of that time so special to me. Behind all the energy and joie de vivre you can feel that pain and longing that deep emotions bring with them. The more years go by, the more clearly I hear this longing. She has always been an important part of me and always will be. Thank you Bananarama and thank you Cruel Summer. Congratulations from Berlin, Germany
Watching the karate kid as we speak
Excellent Post
Absolutely! Happy 40th to Bananarama and Cruel Summer. I was going into my junior year in HS in the fall of '83 when this came out in the summer of that year. It was once of the best summers in my life and this song is summer. It was in heavy rotation on MTV back in the day and of course who could forget it was in Karate Kid.
On June 27th, this song was played on the 80s 80s station in Germany. I highly recommend to all lovers of 80s music, but especially to American listeners, as they will probably hear great 80s tracks from Europe that never made it to the radio waves stateside.

@John Sluder, it seems like music back then embraced family, hope and opportunity. We had a taste of technology but we didn't choke on it like we do today. We had a sense of unity until smartphones took over. It's really sad. Human emotion is getting replaced by social media and then we wonder why our music no longer has life.

Nature rule, Daniel-san, not mine." "Who taught you?" "Father teach." "Heh, you must've had some father, man." "Oh, yes."
