After years of suffering through Bruin collapses, I think I have finally figured it out. The team owner wants at least 4 home dates and once that is guaranteed, he tells the players to not break a sweat the rest of the series so that only the goalie will require a shower at the end of the game and it saves on the hot water bill.

Swayman is incredible honestly. Leafs should have won this game by a much larger margin, yet Swayman kept it very close all the way through. This very easily could have been a 5-1 or 5-2 Leafs win.
Tbh Woll saved one or two surefires as well. Both teams played quite a tight game, although Boston's took a while to get into gear.

What a game this was. I have no real affiliation so I'm just watching for the sake of watching hockey and it was an amazing defensive war. Everyone sacrificing the body and 100% commitment from both teams. Happy this series isn't over, hopefully this goes all the way to game 7 in OT!

As soon as Toronto made the switch to Woll I began to worry. Just seems like anytime a team makes a goalie change the Bruins make him look like Ken Dryden.
Boston also played like hot garbage. 2 shots in the first? They looked nervous, made bad plays and even worse decisions. I'm sure they heard no Matthews and thought it would be easier.

@@JD200_ Bruins have won more than a single round only once since winning the cup 11 years ago. I know the Leafs playoff record in that time is even worse, but it's not like Boston have been performing up to expectations. EDIT: I have made a mistake and been corrected. My point still stands though. They've chronically underperformed in the last decade.

Neither of these teams are Championship caliber. The Bruins have a bad habit of letting up when they take any kind of lead. They have a difficult time of putting teams away, whether it’s the regular season or the playoffs.

I'm a firm believer that a team takes on the personality of its leaders. Tonight, the leafs top line actually had 5 skaters, not the usual 4 skaters and your leader just floating around. This game proves that the leafs would be fine if they ended the Matthews era. Regular season showed that as well.
I believe something just doesn't work out between the core and Matthews, they just don't seem to have the correct mindset to close series and be clutch when it matters. Matthews basically disappearing in almost all post-season appearances with that group since entering the league confirms it. I'm sure he'd do better in the post season in another market. I'm thinking a straight up one for one trade between Dallas and Toronto, Matthews for Robertson. Each team gets what they're missing (goal scorer for Dallas, grit/efficiency for Toronto). Robertson is slightly younger so that compensates for the "talent difference" (but they're so different I do think it'd be a win/win for both parties). At this point Toronto just needs to change. I do believe it would be interesting to see a major retooling happening in the offseason if the Leafs do end up loosing this series. Keep Nylander, Reilly, even Tavares, but yeah the Marner/Matthews experiment should end now. Imagine adding a Robertson and maybe a Clayton Keller (for Marner), completely reshapes the high end talent for Toronto, and probably for the better.

Why would Monty go with Ullmark? Swayman absolutely stood on his head last night, he was the only reason that game went to OT.
Its like the saying goes the 4th one is the hardest to win. As a bruins fan they didn't match the hunger the leafs came out with. Woll is why this series isnt over. He made at least three to four game saving saves. Boston wasn't playing desperate or with the same engery at the start like the leafs were.
Toronto scored two goals and needed overtime to do it, goaltending wins games.

Refs were actually fine this game. Mostly just let them play, but when marchand and holmberg were assaulting each other they threw them both in the box. It was the right call.
But Marchand dosent get embellishment call despite clearly diving on that play lmao.
The Leafs' biggest challenge is putting 2 more of these performances together, let alone 14. Boston is the least of their opponents going forward.

The playoffs have 100% been boring until the Lightning and Leafs fought back a bit. The Dallas series has heated up too. Still, there way too many teams that snuck in, including the Leafs. Boston just got clowned on.
Was there a problem with the ice surface tonight? The Leafs struggled at times handling and passing the puck, and the Bruins were so atrociously bad that I was swearing at the screen, which I rarely do. Sean McDonough on the ESPN broadcast said the Bruins were handling the puck "like a grenade."

I'm just stating the Bruins played horribly, just like the Leaf fans said the same thing about game 1 and 3. Matthews only has 1 goal in 4 games, so it's not like Matthews is a dominant force out there. He still lost 3 games being in the lineup, so there's that. All I was getting to is that if the Bruins keep playing not to lose, then the Leafs are going to take over this series.

As a Blues fan, I agree with you. Cassidy was just fine as the B’s coach. Only reason why you didn’t win The Cup in 2019 was Binnington’s otherworldly performance in the Blues goal. Wasn’t on Cassidy. Wasn’t on the Bruins players in general. Just the bane of playoff teams - the opposing team having a white hot goalie.

Hiya, Dean-O. Not being a Bruins fan, I didn’t realize Cassidy had “lost the room”. Blues GM Doug “Harm”strong fired Stanley Cup Winning Coach Craig Berube, presumably for the same reason. Personally, I think Armstrong’s player decisions over the last 3 years killed us, rather than Berube being the problem. Seems like it’s getting rare to see NHL coaches with more than 5 years with a given team. I realize hockey is a tough, physical, and mental sport, so I can somewhat understand why players may get burned out by a given coach’s style. But I also think a lot of that is on the players who have been praised and adulated ever since they played pee-wee hockey. Signs of modern times, I guess. ??? 🤷🏻♂️ Good luck to your B’s. I never knew how bad Leaf's fans and media kill them whenever they lose until the past few days. Its been brutal I don't even think the Cowboys get it as bad as Toronto does when they come up short.
It would be different if Toronto had a reputation of winning 1st round series. But we have 1 win since early 2000's. They've had 8 years to get their shit together and have only won one round.

Sure, they "won" more than the Leafs, but in reality, they've probably been the team to make the playoffs the most since the lockout in 2005-06, with only 1 cup. 1 cup in 20 years with a pretty stacked roster year after year isn't the definition of successful in my book.

I can't remember seeing Marchand get knocked around, and l knocked off his game like tonight. The Leafs were the better team in 1, 2, and 5...useless garbage in 3, and 4. They owe the fans so much and need to play well Thursday; this goes 7.
Maybe the refs are catching onto Marchand and McAvoy's BS? Would be sweet.
My takeaway from this series, and specifically this game, is it doesn't matter who wins this series; you can basically pencil Florida into the ECF unless one of those Halak vs. Washington series happens. Toronto's still Toronto; don't have close to enough grit/sandpaper to have a snowball's chance in hell of standing up to Florida's relentless pressure and this is the weakest Boston team in a long time; they're so vulnerable down the middle having lost Bergeron and Krejci, specifically on face offs. Even with Swayman being Toronto's nightmare, if you're not THAT much better than Toronto despite them missing Matthews AND Nylander for significant time the odds of beating a vastly better Florida is pretty dim.

They got absolutely manhandled during their series. They showed effort in game 5 and still allowed 5 goals. Just shows how solid the Avalanche are.
I'm happy for the leaf's players but man their fans make it hard to pull for them, the total whiplash from this game compared to the last one is so annoying. After game 4 every leaf's player was a bum and everyone needed to get fired and now they're the greatest team ever that was built for the playoffs. Still I'd be happy for the fans if they won, they've suffered a ton the last years
