Les Miserables: Do you hear the people sing: Sung by 17 Jean Valjeans from around the world
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!!
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!
Will you give all you can give
So that our banner may advance
Some will fall and some will live
Will you stand up and take your chance?
The blood of the martyrs
Will water the meadows of France!

Ireland was like: "I only got one line, I'm gonna fucking nail this shit"
"Here's 800 years of struggle !"
The first line was also sung by an Irishman too, the original and still best Valjean, Colm Wilkinson from Dublin.
Best voice for sure

3:43 the Irish Jean Valjean is fantastic.
It shows just how truly international Les Miserables is. On the face of it it's the story of 19th century French protestors but it speaks to ALL people who are being downtrodden and have no rights.
Proletarians of the world unite and join the peaceful but challenging struggle. You have nothing to lose but your shackles! G'day mate from Australia 🇦🇺 .
it could be the new national anthem of the UK at present.
It is only about 20 or so countries that have translated versions though. I'd argue that this song actually represents a very Western view of revolution. Which makes sense, it is a French song. I'd say that it's not as translatable to other non-Western cultures as it may seem.
@@EternalShadow1667 I see, that’s quite interesting, would you happen to have a song you would consider more international?
Pretty much the song for anyone working in retail. Or anyone working in a corporate office and not in the C-suite.
Ok, sure, Ireland nailed it, but he got the best part to sing, with the key change. That helps a lot.
To song is to short to have gotten through all 17 of them, so they repeated the whole song and edited a few lines. Hungary and Ireland sang the same line.
That’s what I thought too
No way. _"Some will fall and some will live, will you stand up and take your chance? The blood of the martyrs will water the meadows of France!"_ Australia got by far the best bit. Ireland got a single line.
He belted it out of the park!!!😉👍
Alex Saunders Aye Australia is repressing lad!
OUTSTANDING! That guy from Austria was very powerful!
I can only imagine how powerful this must have been to experience in person rather than through an old video. Because even through this video, you can hear just how powerful everyone's voices are together so I can only imagine hearing how booming it must have felt to witness this in person.
I love it for 3 reasons. 1. A lot of Jean Valjeans. 2. Lea Salonga's voice is so clear and cuts through so many voices. 3. The most powerful Do You Hear the People Sing and One Day More .

Japan was the only non-Western country to participate, and I am proud that Takeshi Kaga, the only person of non-European sang in Japanese, an Asian language. And Japan is the third country where Les Misérables has been performed, after the United Kingdom and the United States.
Takeshi Kaga has the most resonant, vibrant voice. I saw him singing for the first time today. His voice is amazing. I can't believe this man was Iron Chef Chairman Kaga. I recognized his face from somewhere, and checked his bio. Someone should post videos of his musical performances.
It’s very nice.

Victor Hugo this is the fruits of your labor thank you for such a powerful and unforgettable book you have written for the world. Your work will go on forever and ever. Rest In Paradise Victor Hugo!
I read one comment that Hugo spent 17 years writing novel.
Les Misérables is one of the greatest stories in the world. I think if everyone stopped to read it we could be much happier as a species.
This was the most epic finale ever. If there was one last song on Earth, one grande finale, this should be it.
People don't get IT. The bulk of humanity is not White men from mostly European nations or the UK. The song speaks for well over 7 billion humans.
I doubt there was any evil intent behind the performance. I'm pretty sure that a Nigerian Valjean would have been perfectly welcome. As for the gender thing, Valjean IS male in the play. You could change the script, like performing Hamlet with all-female roles, but then you would have a new piece of art, not the original. I agree that the message in the song is universal -a call for people to overcome persecution and adversity.
just accept this is beautiful

Les Miserables is brilliant in every language.
Why does the Japanese version sound so damn good? That's not a read. It's just an utterly different language with a very different musical legacy. I really want to see more of the show in Japanese.
Takeshi Kaga is very well known for his voice - speaking and acting. In fact, when they dubbed Iron Chef Japan, they kept anything he was on screen speaking not dubbed (but subtitled) because the voice actor didn’t fit. (He is the chairman for the Japan shows).
It sounds like he’s trying to sing after burning his mouth from hot food.
*Japan* : everything sounds better in Japanese *Canada* : sounds too happy *Austria* : takes this song VERY seriously *Australia* : sounds *way* too happy singing "the blood of the martyrs will water the fields of France" *Ireland* : IT'S MY ISLAND

Stand With Might That’s the power of Les Miserables in any form In brings people together
People are the same in every country, only our governments divide us.

Fun fact, Egill has appeared in two productions of Les Miserables here in Iceland. And playing a different leading role each time, first Valjean, then Javert. Wonder how many actors/singers can say the same (suspect not that many)
I watched his other videos, he is amazing. It’s a shame they sandwiched him between the 2 guys with stronger parts. (Ireland and U.S.)
I thought he gave one of the most impressive bits, despite not understanding the language. I could totally see him in the role.
Egill's my favorite of the 17! I'm impressed by all the creative work he's done over the years.

The Icelandic part is beautiful. Roughly translates to “this is a song of worship the likes of which was never sung in a church”
I get: Þannig er söngur þeirra sem að þrældóm aldrei vilja meir which translates to: So is the song of those who Slavery never wants more
The lyrics to the song - in English - are: It is a music if a people who will not be slaves again.

I was telling to myself the same during the whole video. We'd need to make up different lyrics, though, and i feel it wouldn't be the same without horses, so perhaps we should design mechanical ones.
