You probably know that most tissues in your body regularly replace their cells with new ones. Different organs need their own time to renew completely. And some tissues don't replace their cells at all. But have you ever wondered where the dead cells of your body end up?
Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi, a Japanese cell biologist, spent years studying how human cells get rid of their waste. If this process in the body doesn't work correctly, a person can develop type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, some age-related diseases, and even cancer. And it turned out that when you fast, your cells live longer and produce more energy!

SUMMARY:
- The first person who discovered autophagy was Belgian biochemist Dr. Christian de Duve. For this discovery, he got the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1974.
- Surprisingly, studies show that they still have approximately the same amount of proteins and carbohydrates in their digestive system as they would if they ate animal protein.
- The body can use its own protein in the form of dead and damaged cells and bacteria which have been previously stored away.
- If your natural recycling mechanism doesn't work, damaged cells and their parts start to accumulate in the body. And it ends up unable to neutralize cancer cells and cells infected by dangerous viruses and bacteria. As a result, this can lead to various serious illnesses.
- Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi found out that autophagy gets more intensive when the body is undergoing some stress. Such stress can be fasting, calorie restriction, or even starvation.
- In all his studies, Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi used starvation and fasting to encourage the body to break down toxic cells and get rid of all the garbage.
- Intermittent fasting, which is alternating the periods of eating and fasting, can help your body to clean itself. Besides, it can help you to lose weight and speed up your metabolism.
- If you're a newbie in the world of fasting and the practice looks a bit intimidating, start with skipping your meals. In general, it's enough to skip one meal a day to boost your metabolism and trigger cleansing processes in your body. Just remember that if you've skipped a meal, you shouldn't overeat at the next one.
- One more interesting conclusion you can draw from this research is that, despite what some people think, vegetarians don't suffer from a lack of animal protein. They just get it in a different way.

Sunday we went to Mass & if you ate the Eucharist, it was on a clean empty stomach. During Lent we also fasted for spiritual reasons. It is not uncommon for us to fast anytime of the year. The people of India, Native Americans also fast spiritually.

No, plant- based and meat eaters have the same amount of protein in our body for it to reduce & recycle into building blocks, During Autophagy worn out cellular waste are consumed and recyled in liver Lysosomes. Sickness strikes when Autophagy is not functioning properly. Best advice - 1)fast intermittently for Autophagy to work well; 2)reduce caloric intake over long run to return to healthy weight & 3)be animal protein-free at least for 3 or more days weekly; (if one is not already on plant based diet!)

  • I typically fast for 5-7 consecutive days each month. I typically only feel hunger for the first couple of days. After that, it's just a waiting game. The reason I fast for so long is because long fasts like that stimulate the production of a massive dump of stem cells. So, not only do you have a full week of nonstop autophagy cleaning out your body of old and damaged cells, but the following week you get flooded with stem cells to rejuvenate your body. I feel like Captain America during the week after a fast. It's AMAZING.

    • Harry Harrison Hey, considering this comment was posted a 7 months ago, chances are slim he will reply. I’ve been dieting for only a month a half but I’ve only been doing intermittent fasting for only 12 days. Before IF I Started at 286.6 and got to 271.2. While doing the IF process, I’ve lost almost 8.2 pounds. I started at 271.2, I’m at 263. Although this weigh loss rate is not maintainable in the long run, I think it is a good place to start. I’ve started doing the 16/8 method along with calorie restriction, and one hour of exercise. Once I noticed my hunger was gone I pushed it to 20/4 and now I’m doing 24hr fast every two-Three days. I feel better than I’ve ever felt, and I can honestly see this going the distance.

  • Good vid, I have 2 additions / corrections tho: 1: Juice breaks your fast, as it triggers a metabolic response (because it contains calories). You can, however, have a small amount of salt (preferably sea or Himalaya salt) during a water fast to replenish electrolytes (salt doesn't have calories) also, some people would say you can have anything that helps with being in a deeper fasting state (these are: black coffee without anything added, water with apple cider vinegar, green tea (use a blend without fruits or berries in it), cinnamon in your drinks and a small amount of lemon juice) 2: if you do alternate day fasting, you should only have the 500 calories if you won't eat for OVER 24 hours. Meaning you go for a full day of the week without food, as well as up to breakfast the next day (and from dinner the previous day), in which case you would be fasting for around 32 hours. You should have the small meal all at once tho if you can and not spread out, as to allow your body to reduce insulin levels to baseline for as long as possible. Also, the 500 calories is not leading. You can have 1/4 of what you consume on your non-fasting days. If that's only 1200 calories, you should not consume more than 300 on fasting days. But if you normally need more than 200, you can have more than 500.

I started at 176 pounds and now I weigh 145 pounds. My waist went from 34" down to only 28". It was the best thing that I have done for myself. I own a restaurant and I share my experience with as many people as I can. I have hit my goal weight so I don't do OMAD to lose weight, I do it for autophagy. I feel and look better than I did when I was 21. I get so many people who want to debate with thinking that I'm starving myself. They have no idea what autophagy is. The next person who wants to debate with me I will send them a link to this video.

I cannot stress enough how important it is what you eat when you actually come out of fasting. You need to load up on vegetables (squash, tomatoes and potatoes are NOT vegetables), especially green leafy ones in order to supply your body with the essential micronutrients, particularly minerals.

At least to me, eating refined carbs (flour, sugar, fructose) increase my appetite a lot and makes me crave for food really hard.

    • Fario MON Nearly 10 days, I was feeling so hungry. But, as I said, I engaged myself in activities which were so interesting to me. It made me to forget the cravings. From my experience, I can give you three tips to reduce hunger. 1. Engaging in interesting activities. 2. Going to bed early. 3. Doing some exercise. Ya, you won't believe. But it's true. Workouts kick out hunger. I've experienced it. I felt relatively low hungry on my days, when I did work outs.

    • So if you are already in normal weight, fasting is no good?

      @oskartang9797@oskartang97975 жыл бұрын
    • oskar tang One of the reason for fasting is weight reduction. But it is not the only reason. Fasting is a life style change. Fasting is a method of repairing inner organs. The body repairs it's organs only when digestion ceases. Fasting gives a lot of advantages.

  • Orthodox christians have more than 100 days of fasting during entire year (Great Easter fasting 40 days, Christmas fasting 40 days, and two small fastings around 15 days). This means eating only plant origin food, and sometimes fish. Also many days of fasting is on water (not using anything with oil). Also, besides this days every wednesday and friday is fasting day. And we do it for 2000 years...

  • I intermittent fasting or as they said in video, window fast every day. Started with 10 hour eating window and have condensed it to 4-6 most days. Once a month I throw in a 24+ hour fast and love it. I've lost 50+ lbs went from a tight 38" waist to loose 33" waist size, have more energy, better skin and mental focus. I also noticed I send less money on food which helps be buy better organic or grass feed choices which further the health benefits. Making this life style change has be one of my best decisions ever.

  • I am vegetarian, and I have been practicing 16/8 fasting about 9 months now, it really improved my health. lost about 20LBs. My cholesterol numbers dropped into normal level now. At the beginning it was really hard but after 3 to 4 months it became super easy, and I don't feel hungry for about 16-18 hours. IF worked as a miracle for me.

  • Prophets (SAW) used to fast; 1. In a year, 9th month ie Ramadhan; one month 29 or 30 days at stretch from dawn to dusk. 2. In a year, 1st month ie Muharram, on 9, 10th day of the month 3. In a year, 12th month ie Dhul hajjah, 9th day or from 1-9th day of the month 9 days. 4. In every month, full moon days ie 13,14,15th days of the month. (3 days every month). If we count, 36 days in a year (36/355). 5. In every week, on every Monday and every Thursday. (2 days a week). If we count 2 days a week (2/7) that comes out 8 days a month (8/29) and 96 days in a year (96/355). 6. Hence total number of fasting days in a years; - Ramadhan - 29 - Eid ul adha - 2 to 9 - Muharram - 2 - Monthly - 36 -3 = 33 - Weekly - 96 -8 = 88 - 29 + 2 + 2 + 88 = 121 days in a year - Weekly - 2/7 - 28.6% of week - Monthly - 10/29 - 34.48% of week - Yearly - 121/355 - 34.34% of year - All fasts require are no takings inside body rom dawn to dusk and no intimacy during fast

    • @@mohamdy9474 Dear friend! Muslims (there were several waves of Muslims) invaded Indian subcontinent from 12th to 16 th century. and the tradition of fasting is thousands years old in Hindu religion....All religion have this tradition of fasting be it Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Budhist, Jain etc. Autophagy is not one panacea which will keep you in ultimate health but there are several confounding factors which make you sick. So we all fall sick even if we fast...intermittently or for a month. Yes we all know Taj Mahal is Mausoleum. regards
