Taiwan earthquake: At least seven dead and hundreds injured after 7.4 magnitude strike

Taiwan has been struck by its most powerful earthquake in 25 years, killing at least seven people.
Officials said 711 people have also been injured after the 7.4 magnitude quake struck the eastern coast of the island, in Hualien, on Wednesday.
Buildings in the capital, Taipei, and surrounding areas shook violently and it is feared dozens of people are still trapped under rubble.
Japan and China have offered assistance to Taiwan.

  • We are safe, thank you for your concern. Since the super earthquake in 1999, Taiwan has placed great emphasis on earthquake preparedness, so there haven't been many reports of major disasters this time.

  • I was in Taipei and I do receive the warning message from the government . And after receiving the message for about 2 seconds, the earthquake came . It was huge but the message do give me a small time to think where should I hides.

  • I live in SoCal. The alert I got for the 7.4 (seismic tracker app), was the most intense I've received so far. Seemed louder than usual, and rather than 5 seconds, it lasted for 20 seconds or until I turned it off, which is a first. Keep in mind, I'm not even close to Twain. Not by a long shot

  • To clarify, the tsunami that hit Yonaguni island of Japan and close to the Taiwanese eastern coast was only 30cm and not 30 metres as the correspondent inadvertently mentioned. I think that most people understood that it was but a slip of the tongue from the way she was explaining though.

  • I am in Taichung, and I got a warning on my phone, tho it was only 5-10 seconds before we got hit, 13 minutes later I got next warning about tsunami, again, only a few seconds before the 6.5 hit

  • We did get warnings on our phones in Yilan east coast. Depending on your location at the time, you might have not received any warnings. In total in Yilan we received up to 10 warnings, aftershocks included.

  • Hearing that people were lining up for the subway as normal reminds me of when I was living there. I had read online, the way you could tell a Taiwanese from other people is that the craziest shit will happen and they will act as if it’s completely normal. 😅 I hope everyone is getting what they need to be safe.
