I agree. I bought my M1 ipad pro as my first ipad ever. And I don't really know what needs to be updated. Maybe someone who edits videos or any heavier task may need. But I double any regular consumers need more power than this. I don't play games so I don't know about gaming though. Maybe game needs more power?? I am happy with M1

They can put a quantum chip with room temperature superconductors and 1 TB of RAM, but as long as it still runs iPadOS you are just fine with an iPad Air

In 2018 my sellingpoint for the 1. pro 11 was the usb c port. For my usage it is still more than enough. Short of my iPad dying on me there need to be some serious updates to compel me to buy a new one. For me personal that would be, being able to run tasks and apps i still need my Mac at this point. It would be nice to only need one device on the go
Releasing a M4 first in an iPad is just killing the sales of all M3 computers. Everyone will start waiting for the forthcoming upgrades.

I’m looking to upgrade my 2018 iPad Pro which has been serving me wonderfully. The only reason I’m contemplating an upgrade is for OLED, not a chip upgrade. I’ll take it, but I’m worried that M4 might slip the price out of my range.

Having to continue producing the m3 chip for at least 18 months more is the most convincing argument for the m4 alread. We will know next week

M1 MacBook Air user. Logic is fantastic on the Mac. Logic on the ipad is a waaay watered down version with many missing features. Doesn't matter what chip they put in the iPad Pro if Logic and iPadOS is still crippled. The M1 MacBook Air is a more powerful machine compared to an M4 iPad Pro if software doesn't change on the iPad. Sales WILL be disappointing again if iPadOS stays the same. Even the M1 can't be used fully on iPadOS. Absolutely no reason to upgrade unfortunately.
My 2018 iPad Pro is fine. What would convince me to buy would be a hardware redesign that folds the keyboard into it.
iPad is very function-limited,. Other than the Ai function, the M4 is overkilled and a waste for it, when the Mac lines should come with that processors first.
If the pros come with a M4 chip? It’s a nice touch depending how better it will be , over the M3. The real problem with the iPad Pro isn’t the chip, it’s the fact that , there is so much you can’t do on it, that you can do on MacOS. The IPad Pro has so much processing power that is wasted in its current operating system .
Trouble is, the only thing that can really boost iPad sales properly is to make the iPad switch between mobile mode, i.e. iPadOS, and desktop mode, i.e. MacOS. If they did that then sales would go nuts. However, it would cannibalise Mac sales 🤷

I hate to say it. If the iPad has the same design with only minor tweaks like a new display, new Apple Pencil, M3 or M4 (with AI) and new expensive keyboard cover, that’s still not gone be a big enough sale over the 2018 iPad Pro. It’s going to take a full redesign to really get people to upgrade. It just feels like they adding “seasonings” to an already great dish (2018 IPad Pro)

Appreciate all the power and features that will come with a new iPad Pro but still have to look at how well I can use it as a Macbook replacement. It will take a lot of iPad OS development for me to be convinced. AI is nifty and potentially useful but really would prefer Apple just focused on making the iPad Pro useful as a laptop. So bottom line, I find this all interesting and why I watch these videos, but so far not convinced.
I have a M2 iPad Pro 12.9. there is nothing really they can do to get me to upgrade currently. iPads havent sold well the past several years. it is because there is no separation in the lineup really.

If they do release the M4 next week, it will get interesting because they will have to talk about relative performance to the M2 and so all the calculations will be done to work out just how much better, or not, the M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max chips will be. Could put a lot of people off buying the M3 Macbooks.

If it comes with a M4 chip with a MacOS along with an aluminum chassis that would be worth upgrading and sell like hot cakes but if not then don't bother.
My M1 iPad Air is awesome as is my M2 MBAir. Good for quite a while for what I do. But my M2 MBAir does have 16 gig ram.
What if the iPad gets its own chipset? A Models for iphone, P chips for iPads and M chips for the Macs?

I’m so glad Apple is doing this with the M4 in the iPad Pros. Now the MacBook Pros with M3 Pro and Max will hold the line till late October, when M4 Pro and Max come out. This proves that (due to the N3B node issue) the iPad Mini won’t come out till Sept when Apple will be able to pop in an A18 Pro, under the N3E node. 👍🏻

Well, wether it's the M3 or M4 I hope they upgrade the Mini at the same time. I would love to get a M3 Pro or M4 in a MacMini.
I believe they are introducing the M4 in the iPad Pros for the upcoming AI features, I believe this M4 decision also delayed the anticipated March iPad release. This allows the new AI features to work with an existing iPad when the next OS is introduced at WWDC (and then released). Introducing the M4 iPad Pros before WWDC allows anything (I.e. AI iOS upgrade) to take center stage at WWDC.
Okay so I have the m1 iPad and if they don’t unlock the full potential of this new m4 chip it will be all for nothing just like the m1 was. They can’t make the same mistake. When I say unlock the full potential I mean have apps that support this and improve the apps to take advantage I want to see major updates to features in their disappointing Final Cut app and I want to see Davinci resolve give us full access of its software without work arounds.
Here’s a quick thought: Apple announces & release the M4 iPad Pro in May, just a few weeks before WWDC when the first wave of betas for its upcoming AI-heavy operating systems are revealed and released. Now, the early M4 adopters running and testing iPadOS 18 (beta) on the new iPads will be a perfect consumer launchpad for the main hardware releases of iPhones and Macs coming in the fall, all running the promised AI features on the future OSs.
How do you know if all other companies rejected the early N3 process? Did they even have access to it? Apple tends to buy out production capacity well in advance & has led the field because of this.

I think another reason that they released it now, is for expansive testing of the new AI features. It will certainly support AI that will be on the iPhone, and will have the memory to support AI that will be on the Mac.

Both ideally. But if you need a computer to move around files and have all websites work perfectly, the ipad is a poor computer due to the ipadOS. So get the m3 mba (it is a beast). Remember all M3 chips (m3, pro, max) have the same 4+ghz single core performance. So it is extremely fast. And since it has 3nm, the battery lasts for around 20hrs... that's why I didn't get the m2 or a used m1...3nm is needed for the extreme power efficiency. If you need one of the best drawing tablets, and a much better screen, but you don't need a computer at the moment, then the ipad pro is the better buy since it can do still do what the MacBook air does. It will only be poor at file management, and some websites wont work properly. I am planning to add a m3 ipad pro (or m4) this summer.

I have been waiting to buy my son a desktop computer (don’t want a laptop for various valid reasons). We have been waiting for M3 chips to make it to Apples desktops as the ray tracing and more powerful graphics are important to him. I sincerely hope they don’t skip the M3 in desktops and have a strange lineup pushing M2 Max based Mac studios for the next year!

I have a iPad and honestly i don’t use it because I don’t have any reason to and honestly wish I waited and got something like the tab s 9 not because it more powerful which it probably isn’t but because it more pretty and doesn’t have a outrageously big border. I know the iPads pros now are insanely powerful yet that massive border makes it seem a cheap tablet you put child games on for your 1-3 year old to learn the alphabet instead of the ultra powerful editing, processing , art tablet that creators and people use to do cool things

The Apple Pencil needs to be revamped with optional rubber tips like the Samsung Galaxy Tab Series and be lighter.

I really don’t think apple will release M4 chip this early, it makes zero sense. To me in case iPad Pro gets a different version of the M- chip it would be an M3 with some extra AI features, something like M3 Bionic plus pro 😆
Idk this feels like history repeating - so you're saying that Apple is relying on a silicon upgrade to drive iPad sales? Why does that sound familiar? Again - the iPad has been capable since M1 (even before!) - the software is the problem, not the hardware.
Not to mention the price increase.
The yields of the m4 should be better than those of the m3, another incentive for Apple to skip
