Jesus was crucified, dead, and buried. But the grave could not contain the holy Son of God. Continuing his expositional series in the gospel of Luke, in this sermon, R.C. Sproul preaches on the bedrock foundation of our hope: Christ’s resurrection in victory over sin and death.
This sermon was preached by R.C. Sproul at Saint Andrew's Chapel in Sanford, Fla. Hear more from his series in the gospel of Luke: • The Gospel of Luke: Se...

  • My Grandmother had a print of Jesus and the two disciples walking on the road to Emmaus. When I stayed with her, I would stand on her bed and look at it. After she moved house, there was no sign of the picture in her new home. After her death some years later, my Father and I were talking about the picture, and he said he would have liked to have had it. I tried to find it, visited a museum in Leeds and looked through the Victorian religious pictures, but no sign of it. Our Vicar suggested putting an ad in the Methodist Recorder. Months passed, and one day I received a letter from a lady in Dovedale (UK), saying she had the picture, and would like me to have it. Relatives of hers brought it to my house, and it was the same print. I later went to meet this lovely Christian lady. I gave the picture to my Father, who was so pleased to have it in his bedroom. After his death, I took it, and it now hangs above my bed. The story in Luke has always been my favourite Bible story, started off by Grandma`s picture.

  • 18:58 I did not know it was the same exact location. I knew it was in the same region, but not that the place was later renamed from Mt. Moriah to Golgotha. That's amazing.

  • “The Jews surrounded him. They asked him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I’ve told you, but you don’t believe me. The things that I do in my Father’s name testify on my behalf. 26 However, you don’t believe because you’re not my sheep. 27 My sheep respond to my voice, and I know who they are. They follow me, 28 and I give them eternal life. They will never be lost, and no one will tear them away from me. 29 My Father, who gave them to me, is greater than everyone else, and no one can tear them away from my Father. 30 The Father and I are one.” 31 The Jews had again brought some rocks to stone Jesus to death. 32 Jesus replied to them, “I’ve shown you many good things that come from the Father. For which of these good things do you want to stone me to death?” 33 The Jews answered Jesus, “We’re going to stone you to death, not for any good things you’ve done, but for dishonoring God. You claim to be God, although you’re only a man.” 34 Jesus said to them, “Don’t your Scriptures say, ‘I said, “You are gods” ’? 35 The Scriptures cannot be discredited. So if God calls people gods (and they are the people to whom he gave the Scriptures), 36 why do you say that I’m dishonoring God because I said, ‘I’m the Son of God’? God set me apart for this holy purpose and has sent me into the world. 37 If I’m not doing the things my Father does, don’t believe me. 38 But if I’m doing those things and you refuse to believe me, then at least believe the things that I’m doing. Then you will know and recognize that the Father is in me and that I am in the Father.” John 10:24-48

  • Behold, Jesus' resurrected body is a glorified or spiritual body, distinct from his previous physical body. In His post-resurrection appearances Jesus could appear and disappear, and his disciples initially had trouble recognizing him. Amen I pray that the Holy Spirit lights a match to your soul so that you never go to church again but instead realize you are the Church. Nowhere in the Holy Scripture does it say to go to church.

    • There are entire sections of the NT dedicated to instruction about church worship and practice. You'd know that if you'd bothered to read it. Be gone, troll. Cease your relentless efforts to lead Christians into sin. Have You no fear of God?! Understand you will one day stand before Jesus Christ to give account. Repent, while He still grants you breath to do so!

    • Do You Have to Go to Church to Be a Christian? Is church attendance, if you're physically able, a requirement to go to heaven? In a very technical sense, the answer is no. However, we need to remember a few things. Christ commands His people not to forsake the assembling together (Heb. 10:25). When God constituted the people of Israel, He organized them into a visible nation and placed upon them a sober and sacred obligation to be in corporate worship before Him. If a person is in Christ, he is called to participate in koinonia-the fellowship of other Christians and the worship of God according to the precepts of Christ. If a person knows all these things and persistently and willfully refuses to join in them, would that not raise serious questions about the reality of that person's conversion? Perhaps a person could be a new Christian and take that position, but I would say that's highly unlikely. Some of us may be deceiving ourselves in terms of our own conversion. We may claim to be Christians, but if we love Christ, how can we despise His bride? How can we consistently and persistently absent ourself from that which He has called us to join-His visible church? I offer a sober warning to those who are doing this. You may, in fact, be deluding yourself about the state of your soul.

    • The writer to the book of Hebrews in chapter 10 explicitly tells us that we are not to forsake the gathering together of ourselves as Christians. We might even go a step further and say in the New Testament, there is no such thing as a churchless Christian. There's no lone ranger Christian in the New Testament, because we understand all who are united to Christ are also united to one another. And so, as Christians, we're to delight to gather together; we want to be together as Christians. And so, a local church represents a local gathering of Christians, a particular people, in a particular place, at a particular time, celebrating the work of King Jesus. And so, in the New Testament, you'll have the church in Thessalonica, the church in Ephesus, the church in Rome. Christ calls His disciples to gather in local congregations to do His work. And so, we have an explicit command to gather together. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 a not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

    • @Hashukana Gathering together is not going to Church. The Church is not a place you can go to because the Church is the community of believers or the body of Christ. It transcends physical boundaries and encompasses all those who have faith in Jesus Christ. What is the Day approaching? The soon to occur Parosia in 70 AD.
