This orca may be “playing with its food,” as orcas often do, or it may be a rare glimpse at an elder male teaching younger orcas to hunt.

The older male orca spun the sea turtle with the front of its head, called a rostrum, then one of the two youths carried another sea turtle by its fin.
Filmed off Isla Isabela in the Galápagos, the orcas were observed playing with the turtles for half an hour-then swimming off without eating them. Young orcas learn survival skills by watching their elders. Only a few animal species, including orcas, teach behavior with step-by-step instruction. Orcas don’t often hunt sea turtles, but they are among the few animals with the jaw strength to break the turtles’ shells.

    • As a kid I have had so much love for orcas they have been my favorite animal since I saw them the first time. My background is a live orca actually. Every animal when it goes after something playing or not anyone can say it's being mean... but in reality it's all a food chain. Is it mean for people to eat chickens, cows, pig, or fish? They could say the same about us. Every animal or mammal has their way of living. We teach our kids to fish or hunt. It's not any different then them hunting for food or sport. Everything has to live off of something in life. I sit and watch several videos of these intelligent creatures. The only time I have ever seen anything to do with them harming humans is in captivity. I dont think any animal should be taken from their natural habitat to make money off of them like sea world has and drug them up or starve them if they do not perform right. I have watched several documentaries about orcas and for someone to come out and say they personally drugged them at sea world is awful. A lot of the things they do to these animals as well as others is not fair to them especially being ripped away from their pods and their mothers slaughtered in front of them like tilikum I believe was his name. No animal or mammal deserves that. It's like if someone were to take u from ur family and everything u loved just to keep u in a cage the rest of your life I'm sure you would try to retaliate too. Orcas can live 60 to 100 years in the wild. As for captivity maybe one or so lived around mid 20s at the highest. Most around 17.

Same behavior has been observed by Orcas playing with their trainers. Once in a while they have to show the world how dominant they are, but unfortunately it may not end well for their toy.
