How much Magic Find should you have? How much does MF even matter in Diablo 2: resurrected?
In this video I do 100 Hell Mephisto runs with 0%, 100%, 250%, and 500% increased magic find to see how much of a difference there is in the number of sets and unique items that drop.
You can find a lot of good advice about this online, but I decided to do some testing myself.

I dont why this format of video is so damn entertaining...I watch every one of them. I barley even play D2. I guess I played it enough to understand how good some drops are.
Great video man! I love how you put this together. Nice to see real world of these stats put into work.
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
If you were tuning in to the live premiere, the live chat ended before I could respond to the last few live chat messages... Thanks for tuning in, it was fun chatting with you, and I hope to do this "premiere" thing again 😄
Appreciate the dedication on this
Great content as usual! I've always felt like the sweet spot is around 250-300 mf. You can easily achieve that without severely compromising your dmg output and still do runs efficiently, and get a lot of good stuff. Getting too much mf beyond that point will only make your runs slower and the reward is definitely not worth it in terms of drops per minute.
Thanks! 🙂 And I agree
Thanks for the work man!
This is the most swedish english i have heard.
Då skulle du höra mig när jag pratar vardagsengelska 😉
When it rains it pours, den tar jag med mig 😊
Some swede just do this. We do not all have "knut" sounding englando
@@zarfenSay "Jon Bon Jovi eats a cheeseburger"? :D
its so swedish it sounds like he could start fellating a migrant at any second
I normally aim for around that 250-300 mark while working on my grail as I definitely noticed a significant impact on damage depending on the build I am playing glad this has been verified by you p.s love your vids man
Same here, 250-300 is where I feel like I have “enough” but it depends a bit on what character I run of course. Thank you so much!
same. 250-300 seems very optimal in terms of clearing speed. you might save two seconds per run with less mf, but thats not at all worth doing as a run might take a full minute with an unlucky online map layout. 105fcr should always be met
@pascaltomasovic3586 yeah I think that’s a good rule of thumb, but it also depends so much on what character you run and what gear you have available.
your best odds are look at the shape of the moon the night you are grinding. Moonless / Crescent = go back to bed, dont waste time Full moon = LETS GO BABY
Nice vid dude, very interesting to watch
Thanks! Glad you liked it
Great video! I’m mostly impressed with the fact you were able to hit 500% EXACTLY lol. Something I think I’ve noticed during my limited MF experiments is: the higher MF seems to have more of an affect on the higher tier (Exquisite/Elite) equipment.
Glad you liked it! Getting even MF numbers took some planning, but with a variety of small charms of with different Mf it was not too hard. MF only affects rarity (magic, rare, set, unique) but I’m aware it looks like it gives better items based on my finds in the video.
Great video, and really well edited.
Thank you!
This is awesome and fun to watch, thanks for the hard work! I'll probably stick to around 250% myself to not compromise my run speed.
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it. Yeah me too. Unless I become a rich guy with unlimited 7%mf scs and ists
Great video. I think you should also add the time it took to complete the 100 runs. Considering the drop off in dps for more MF, the time taken would put this video into more perspective, and show the efficiency with each gear set used. If the 500mf build took 50% longer than the 250mf build, but only returned 10% more finds..then obviously not as efficient. But if it only took 10% more time for those 10% more finds, then its actually just as efficient, and worth it, if your JUST grinding loot. The change from 100MF to 250MF resulted in a 25% increase in finds. That's probably the sweet spot right there
Absolutely! I agree that this would have made it even more useful, and the plan was to do this in the beginning. The problem is that I couldn’t put together any decently “realistic” gear set ups with the items I had saved on my mules. With the gear I used in this video, the only decrease in speed I really noticed was with the 500% mf, because that’s when I had to start sacrificing skills and fcr for more mf. I could potentially redo this experiment sometime, and then put more time and effort into planning and acquiring more gear
Great Job. Surprisingly the quality of the unique items has been sooo good at 500 mf 😮 Cool video and very helpful. Thx
Thanks! Glad you liked it. Yeah the distribution of good items was pretty random!
Thanks for this video, very insightful and a great resource!
Thanks, I’m glad you find it useful
Thank you for posting this!
My pleasure! 🫡
I wonder what is the absolute highest Magic Find. I'm seeing posts of over 1000 but would be cool to see what you come up with. Great videos! Really enjoying the effort.
The drop rate is one of the things I hate most about D2R. I almost *never* find anything good, or if it's ok then it's not for my character's class. I've literally NEVER found a rune above Ko, and only saw that drop ONCE. I reached Travincal on Hell difficulty with my Fury druid but had to give up playing legit as the council were just unbeatable. They'd kill my merc, heal them themselves constantly and were so fast I couldn't kite them away from one another... absolutely impossible without the god gear I cheated to build using hacked save files. I now use Breath of the Dying and Chains of Honour, with a number of L20 paladin aura charms. The fact that the Worldstone Keep and Baal's minions were STILL a challenge for my hacked build proved to me that I never could have beaten the game legitimately, the amount of enemies and damage dealt was just insane. It took me, my merc and all my summons TEN MINUTES to hack through a physically immune Lister the Tormentor, and of course, I got diddly squat in loot from killing Baal. D2R's difficulty curve is analogous to the dating market as you age... it starts out easy and fun, you hold out for something good, then by the time you've been playing the game for hundreds of hours you realise it's fundamentally unwinnable and you either have to quit it or cheat, then quit anyway.
Thank you. This helped me a lot.
Nice data! Another data point I think would be useful is average clear speed for each of the three %. I know higher MF = slower clears, but I think putting numbers to it would be cool. BTW, RNGesus has been good to you my friend. Lotta good drops. My many Meph runs haven’t produced what you have.
Thanks! Yeah that would have been great info, but I didn’t have the gear to make good setups for each mf%. If I redo this experiment I’ll definitely plan the gear better to include that data.
higher MF only hurts you if you are doing greater than P1. For P1, just go what ever amount of MF you can stack, stuff will still die.. if you cant kill because you are missing some +1 to skill, you suck balls Its P1 for crying out loud.
Good job mate 😊
Very interesting video, thank you.
Im a hoarder, so finding even trash uniques is fun in single player. I end up with so many copies of runewords in weird worthless bases, because its what i needed at the time. I should also mention i play hardcore, so saving everything is also inherent in the playstyle, you never know when youre going to lose everything, so saving stuff that got you through the early game can really speed up releveling. The hardest part is managing all of the inventory, if diablo released a paid stash option like path of exile they would have trouble with all the money id be throwing at them. I have so many mules full of what would absolutely be considered garbage, but to me its the whole game. Kill stuff, stash loot. 😅
I think that definitely has merit in HC! I'm also hopeless in hoarding, especially low-mid level items that I will never use... I was so hyped for the shared stash system when Resurrected was revealed, but that quickly became way too little so now I have 10 level 1 barbarians filled with items too 😅 I agree 100% though, the loot is why I still play this game.
@zarfen I would recommend HC. While dying is a huge blow and definitely can hurt, it makes every encounter more meaningful and every decision more impactful. You even look at some of the items differently because it changes the dynamic and focus from power, to a blend of power and defense. Nothing quite like the feeling of finding an item that helps you improve your build, only to die a few runs later.
@@LeeCoins I'll probably dabble in HC at some point. Right now while I've been focusing on the loot videos, it doesn't make much sense to me, but if I do more of a playthrough or challenge video, I would probably do HC. Or just for "fun" while not recording. I see the appeal for sure :)
@@zarfen just make sure you compile all of your death reactions into a video. Those are great. Maybe do a dank loot death video. Give em some highs and then give em some lows. Comedy gold mine somewhere in there.
@@LeeCoins haha I’ll definitely do that!
Do you mind doing a video on these MF numbers doing full clears of durance/mephisto? Chests, Breakables, Council, etc?

This is the best science I’ve seen done since 2019…
I feel confortable sir. Cuz you talk so understandable. Thank you for your comparing run. 🎉
Great video as always! Is there any characters that can run farming like this other than sorceress? Seems like only sorc the best.
It’s hard to compete with teleport so unless you have enigma the others struggle to keep up. But in single player with static maps, or for areas with less randomness in the map generation (CS, trav etc.) I think teleport is not as important if you really prefer other classes. I sometimes MF with sub-optimal characters because it’s fun.
@@zarfenThanks for your quick reply! You're awesome!
NIce comparison! 300mf feels like the sweetspot!
I'm just starting my more serious search for a Stormshield with single player hardcord barbarian, so seeing 2 drop was hearthwarming :)
i've always aimed for 300-400 so maybe i'm aiming a little high is what i learned from watch you. as to finding items you have multiples of, some of them are still welcome additions, because most characters can use them.
Yeah, but once you have decent gear a sorceress can to get to 3-400 almost without trying it you got 3 piece tals so it for sure depends on your char/build/gear. But maybe I won’t feel “stressed” the next time my javazon only reaches 200 MF
Great video! What players count did you kill Meph on please?
Thanks! Default/Players 1 for all runs in the video
Thank you for the content. I have a question. Is there any influence on the magic find from the Merc? If he gets the final blow does his magic find count over your? How does this work? Thank you!
Yes! If the merc gets the final blow, his AND your magic find added together is counted for the drop. But if you get the final blow the mercs MF does nothing for the drop.
Excelent analysis
Thank you, glad you found it useful!

When are we going to see that Uber run using all the keys you collected? Also, another commenter mentioned in a previous video that the true best MF/rune spot is a room of unique skeletons on the way to Nilathak or something? Would love to see if he was right by testing 1000 runs there.
Sorry to disappoint you but I did the Uber runs with those keys already, and it was a big mess and I didn’t like the way it played out so I scrapped the recording and never made a video out of it. I want to make a “torch from scratch”-video though so hopefully in the future. The only comment that comes to mind was a guy who did pindle runs and then ran all the way to Nihlatak, killing my all monsters on the way and finding some good runes. I am not a big fan of the halls so it’s not something I’m looking to do at the moment. More 1000 run vids on the way though. Thanks for the input 🙂
after hiting 200% focus on faster clears and survivability but you can still stack those 7mf small charms
On Ribcracker, does the 100% enhanced defense mean it doubles the Ribcracker's defense to 200? Or does it double your entire character's defense?
it doubles the characters defense but it's a pretty worthless item unless you find it ethereal. and then it's only really useful on shifter druids cause they can zod it and up it to a stalagmite which will reduce the weapon speed but increase damage. this drawback is somewhat compensated by the form. in this rare build and case it's a bloody good item really but as said it needs to be ethereal.
Lmao first drop was chance guards they were like please for the love of god get some magic find 😂
Very nice video... it is never worth it to sacrifice kill speed for more MF. Especially because MF only affects if the given base rolls magic/rare/set/unique. It does not affect what kind of base drops or rune drops. That's why doing more kills over given time is always more beneficial.
Thank you! Yes exactly. If you want to find a Griffon’s (like I do…), you have to find a lot of diadems and that requires a lot of drops. part of why I did this test was to convince myself to not sacrifice too much speed for high mf😅
Yea for that its probably best to just have Horker Barb and spam Pindleskin or Thresh Socket. Both being at about 1 : 25000 with ~350 MF. It can be done with budget gear with little issues.
if your merc gets the kill , its basically +25% magic find from Insight some of tose runs are +25% with 100% is sometimes 125% etc
am curious what is the return in item quality vs magic find from these runs. quantity is nice but quality is better !
Magic find does not influence what kind of items that drop, only makes them more likely to be magic, rare, set, and unique.
When I find rare uniques that are great like shanks on sp, I compare it with the others I have and then keep the better roll. Once I have 3 perfects I pick up, Id and drop it.
That's reasonable. Even 3 is more than you should really ever need in SP. Though it is nice to not have to "look" for your shakos on you other characters when you need them :)
How long did each different setup take to do the 100 runs?
I didn’t take note of that unfortunately. It would have been good info, but my setups were so random that I didn’t think it would have been too useful.
It's hard to put away your mf gear for faster clear speed. But faster clear speed leads to more find numbers faster in the long run. I think ~ %200 is easy to wear for a casual player and good enough unless you're trying to minmax your gear.
Part of why I wanted to make this vid/test was just to convince myself to not chase higher and higher mf% too hard at the cost of speed
It'd be interesting to take these same builds now, and compare their performance in different player counts. Would be pretty simple to do in SP.
I probably wouldn’t do all of them, but a players 1 vs players 8 video is on my to do list :)
@@zarfen for that you should consider that if you are not in a real players 8 party that there is really no difference between p7 and p8. also is having 7 players idle in town but farming alone (which IS playing p8) the same as farming with 4 buddies that are near you. also do bosses like meph have a rather small chance of no drops (which is the whole point of running higher player counts - reducing the no drop chance). the more players in a game the lower the chance to drop nothing on a kill. but that only affects white monsters and some bosses but less so. uniques, superuniques and champs have a 0% chance to drop nothing anyways. that's why there isn't really much point in running anything but p1 for stuff like pindle because champs will ALWAYS drop 2 pots and an item that is either magic or higher OR a larger sum of gold and uniques will ALWAYS drop 4 pots and an item magic or higher. superuniques will always drop 2 items and i forgot if 4 or 5 pots. so if you target boss groups in pits or something p1 is the way to go. if you run bosses it depends on the boss but p3 is mostly the best. if you run and kill everything like in cows p8 makes sense for real people farm groups. if you are farming solo then as said p7 and p8 are identical in terms of drops but p8 gives a little more exp. the chance of no drops only changes on odd numbers so p1+2 are the same chance, p3+4 are the same, etc. for bosses on p7+ you will always get andy or duriel drops p5+ you will always get meph, dia or baal drops. but as said between p3 and p5 the difference in drops is only marginal.
just a note that this also semi proves is 0mf = more runes. most the 0mf run that got a good drop also had runes no mf runs had rune drops (from what we saw)
This is not true. If a rune drops or not is decided before mf is taken into account.
Would be cool to see how long the runs took (on average) as a result of decreasing kill power too.
That was the plan at first, but I didn’t have the gear to make it “realistic”. For example, 0%mf setup had lower damage than the 100%mf setup because I don’t have a good sorc weapon without mf like deaths fathom or Hoto. But I agree it would have added good info to the tests!
@@zarfen fair, but even a spirit and FCR rings would've been better than suicide branch lol
@WooliteMammoth haha yeah, I could have done much better with some more planning. I wasn’t even wearing any rings for the first 100 runs 😁
What is striking is that it seems to improve the Unique find more than the sets after 100% - but this could be just a consequence of a smaller sample of 100 runs?
Not sure! But one thing that struck me is how many more uniques than sets there are, so even if sets are a “more common” roll, a lot of items simply can’t roll as sets so I ended up finding fewer than I thought I would before doing the runs.
Does this apply to online game as well? sisnce you mentioned that it was SP what you were doing... let me know plz :)
Yes! I did not change the player setting or anything, so it’s the same as if you would do solo games online

"no good set amulets" angelic rings, amulet, and body armour is fucking amazing for levelling new toons.
Ok I agree. I was thinking mostly about end game when I made that comment so imo it’s not an exciting drop to find. But it sure is a good set, I use Angelic’s all the time. On melee characters the ring+amu combo is good to wear through the entire game
What players number was this? Or was it online?
It was offline but all done on players 1
Are we watching old videos played live?
Hey Sam! No it’s a brand new video. I’m trying out the “premiere” feature on KZhead, which means that the first time the video goes live, there’s a live chat the first time it’s shown. So it kinda looks like a livestream
Does MF affect the quality of drops? Not the rng rolls, but like are unique drops more likely to be rarer uniques with more MF? Or does it just affect amount of drops being uniques
No, just increases the chance that the items that drop are unique
@@zarfen interesting! good to know! Great channel/videos BTW

Looks like char lvl depends too on how much mf need. Atm lvl95 and 420 is great for a high uniq item drops there. What u think about it?
I like to find rares and magic items and avoid unique/set. Wondering how many rare/magic you found but you probably didn't record those results?
I didin’t, but when I put together the data sheet at the end I knew I should have done it!
@@zarfen haha, next time you'll remember. There is always some nerd wants more stats.
Higher MF% definitely have not diminishing return. At least from video I've got impression that with higher MF% also higher quality of drop. Mean on 0% dropped only t1 items. On +100% MF ocasionly dropped t2 items and on +500% MF t1 items almost wiped from drop. T1 mean hat, t2 war hat and t3 shako for example. Mean base item. Forgot how it called properly.
what player count are you on for each set of runs?
I did players 1 for all runs so it’s applicable to online too
I have more shakos them chars. Yeah, I don't pick them anymore. Actually, I don't even use this item lol (barb is Arreats, paly is dream, Zon is griffon, druid is+5nado and necro is a rare circlet)
Yeah I guess a lot of characters eventually graduate from their shako a to better items, too! Don’t you even pick them up just to check the defense?
The graph does look very much like the one you can find for Effective MF, meaning the more MF you have the less overall drops are affected, but also the more uniques you get proportionate to set items. But yeah, more than 300 MF usually weakens the build and is not that productive.
Yes, and my expectation for the experiment was that the results should look like that graph, but part of why I did this was just to confirm it for myself.
Afaik, the magic find only influences the items rarity, not the amount of items. Let's assume a mob will always drop 5 items. Your MF only determines what rarity those 5 will drop.
Yes, that is correct!
91 sorc 360mf still haven't found shako. I also have 75 summon Necro 120mf. No shako. 84 lvl smiter 20mf no shako too. Farming mephisto and occasionally terror zones with the sorc.
I think you should have done a line chart instead of a column chart. If you had, you would have produced the typical diminishing returns graph, similar to the natural log function, f(x) = In(x). This would have, imo, brought the idea a visual of the mf issue that increases in mf leads to a less than proportional increase in loot. MF only means a lot past 250 - 350% for blue drops. I believe it was calculated by a statistician that 350% is the sweet spot, min/max.
The reason I went with this instead of lines was to show the distribution between set and uniques. The “diminishing returns” graph that circulates online looks good as a line chart though, and clearly tells this story. So I get what you mean.
was this done on p1?
Yes, all runs were p1
Bro I started my ssf profile in January. So far I’ve found 9 shakos, I can’t believe I’m saying this but I don’t want anymore. I’ve been grinding to find that unique diadem though 😅
Haha yeah that’s more than enough for your characters, their mercs, AND their mules 😜 I still kind of like the thrill of seeing if it’s a perfect 141 def though. Let’s see who finds the elusive diadem first! 😈
@@zarfen I've found around 14 shakos on my grail so far and I have 2 140 defense ones it hurts so much that both rolled 140 and not 141
@@Dragoon-tie Damn, so close! I have 1 140 def so far, no 141...
I actually would like to know your rune drops in these runes. I want to know for sure that MF does not affect rune drops.
Hehe I didn’t take note of that but it was very few.
We already know for sure it doesn't.
I had sorss with 720 MF. Verry good res. She can help you till act4 hell. Drops are luck. And luck is just play again and again this game.
Never compromise your speed and killing ability for MF. It's more fun to move around quickly and kill stuff fast than to dedicate time to killing one monster over and over. Also, you get more chances are Runes popping from more kills.
I think it’s fun to find and identify items, so I would say it depends on how you like to play the game 🙂
If my calculations are right, there are a few mf points you may safe for other stats, but in general it doesn´t make much sense to max out magic find or waste to much time into calculations, if you just want to have fun. If you would like to go all in - it would be important to find the best mathematician around who would just write down your findings and starting to do crazy calculations on runspeed & turnover. Every time you basically change one single item of your equipment your performance is influenced. So, if you want to MF start with the angelic set, Tal Rashas, but try never lose too much damage output.
From my experience without counting anything above 200% MF does very little so I try to keep it around there.
I did two mephisto runs just now on POD cuz was testing ice blast/freezing pulse ttk. I got 3 sets (tal rashas crest, angelic mantle, sazabi's mental sheath), and 1 viperfork. 284% mf btw
Speed runs with high damage and 0% mf is the best thing, but you need to be on high density areas
the question is, does MF only increase the quantity of unique and set items found, or also the rarity?
The only thing MF does is to make more of the items that drop be magic, rare, set, and unique.
@@zarfen I mean, considering the actual rarity of the items you showcased in this video, it could be true. With the most MF you've gotten the rarest item
What difficulty level?
Hell difficulty 🙂
250% mf does seem to be a sweet-spot
A little OT, but watching this video and feeling like "wow, that's interesting loot" or "uh, that MF-stuff is something I could optimize" is a feeling that I never had in D4. Lack of interesting items/systems....
This is EXACTLY my problem with itemization/gear in Diablo 3/4. There's just 1 thing to optimize for (character power/clear speed) which makes gearing much less interesting. Balancing MF vs clear speed adds "difficult" decisions to make, and people still discuss MF vs clear speed after all these years.
Wouldn't a more accurate way to test this, be to do x amount of time instead of x amount of runs? That way you could determine how much MF you would sacrifice for kill speed and vice versa. EDIT: Oh, someone already pointed that out..
300-350 MF is sweet spot for many years experinece.
its probably most efficient to run between 100%and 250% magic find
It depends so much on what gear you have to choose from but I think around 250 is a good and relatively easy target for most characters
It's always a f'n Manald or Nagel ffs out of 20 unique rings I might get 1 different if that 1 of 20 is lucky lol
Haha, ain’t that the truth!! I’ve been getting tons of dwarf stars lately, in similar fashion
nice excel at the back lol

@@zarfen nice haha

player count?
Players 1 for all runs in the video
Sounds weird but running meph in single player means you can use a frenzy barb to run it and switch to double Gull dagger at 1% hp which is free 200% mf. Its probably the easiest and cheapest way to mf farm because a budget sorc kills meph slower and since you can reset maps teleport is less op in general
I can totally see that and I’ve been wanting to do “gearing up a melee barb” video running mephisto only.
will be a pain without lawbringer, but good luck friend :)@@zarfen
@shakeweller I’ll do some testing beforehand but I would be starting the project with some low-mid runewords and other easy-to-get gear. I’ll keep it as budget as possible, but if it’s too painful without a lawbringer I’ll use a lawbringer 🙂
Some guy was telling Me having no magic find is better for uniques. He thinks that with high MF You get alot of Rares instead of uniques. He has played sinced Diablo 1 and still thinks this... I'm pretty sure it works more so like You just get all items other than normal non-magical items with higher MF, and with much higher MF You get alot more of them.
You are correct. Your friend kind of has a point in that the proportion of rares to uniques changes with higher mf so that you might find more rares(and magical items) for every unique you find (on average). But you don’t find more rares INSTEAD of uniques, it’s like you say: you find more rares AND uniques instead of “white” items
The game 'rolls' for item quality (base/magic/rare/set/unique after the item is established, with mf % affecting the quality. So at some stage if you keep increasing the mf% you will see less and less white/blue items and more set/rare/unique. I use zero mf which ensures all rare items drop from diablo and no set/uniques (first kill). Maybe this was what that guy meant rather than uniques?
I'm surprised you didn't just hack in 3 charms to give you the magic find you need err assuming your in single player
Back when i played i got a lot of flak for only running 130ish magic find, which came from enigma and gheeds fortune. I was playing mostly a lightning sorceress, farming in WSK, The Pit and sometimes Diablo or cows. Always killing Shenk + the guy above him, and Pindelskin. Often clearing Travi too but ignoring the lightning immune rares if there were any.
