A behind the scenes look at the idea, the build and the stunt.
We talked with Tony about an idea of creating a Helix shaped ramp that could be skated from top to bottom and he was excited but also a little nervous. To make it all the way around and out, he needed a combination of the right speed, centrifugal force and friction to keep him on the vertical wall. Thanks to Sony for funding this dream and the help of Sony Action Cameras to capture the event. Skateboarding is fun.

One of my favourite things about this video is that he shows himself failing and getting better before succeeding, it's not a video of him just doing it once looking like a pro. Absolutely amazing.

As a 52 year-old mountain bike enthusiast for 30 years, I can tell the youngsters that the crashes take their toll. Crash at 20 ....no problem. Bruises and rash heal in about 7-10 days. Crash at 50 .....3- 6 weeks. We still have that inner-animal in us that tells us to go for it - but there's a voice in there that says "is it worth being out-of-commision for a month?" The fact that this guy still goes for it deserves so much respect. The guy is a warrior. So much heart. Respect, sir.
but you shouldnt stop. as soon as you stop your body start to die faster. The need to keep up is what makes it stay alive. never, ever stop. wear protection, be careful, more mindful but do not stop doing what you like, because after the dying accelerates theres no going back.

Totally feeling this. That 5 second thrill or feeling of accomplishment is no longer as worth the recovery time from from injuries while trying to get there. Not just because the recovery time had lengthened, but also because you've experienced a lot of those intense but short thrills and accomplishments, so other longer but less intense thrills and accomplishments which you could have enjoyed over a few weeks of you weren't busy with recovery become much more attractive
I am 49 and i just took 3 weeks off lifting weights after tweaking my Left delt. My muscle just would not heal unless i stopped lifting completely.

This seems like a very straightforward idea to have, I'm super surprised this had never been tried before.
Well it is taking it to a dimension you don't really think about. You have a limited time to be horizontal on a vertical axis between momentum and hang time before gravity wins out and so finding a workable design in terms of physics and having the resources and guts to make that real with no tangible proof it's possible makes it a little less straightforward. I mean the various Tony Hawk games had a shit ton of wild ramps to launch miles into the air and vertical surfaces and crazy loop de loops, but making them in reality and skating them is entirely different.
I'm not it's aerodynamicly impossible. But Tony does the impossible.

For real. Very few skaters have pushed the limits like Tony. His made such an impact on pushing the boundaries of skating and still is now, as an OG of skating.

Jeremy exactly, pads are awesome when you are skating and allow you to push much harder and fall safely on purpose as you said, whenever I would skate without mine, my brother would say dude just put your pads on you skate so much better with them on.

He has a terrible center of gravity, that's why he kept falling. The time he made it, if you watch, he squats so low at the end that he's practically sitting on the board when he comes out.
