    • Colin Hanmer : here's the problem I have with your statement - atheism isn't a set of beliefs it's the absence of belief in gods. You can't "teach atheism" in the same way you can't "teach someone how not to play golf." You're not teaching some sort of anti religion, you're just not teaching them religion. Actually, you're just not telling them that those religious texts are 100% true. I have already talked to my son about religions. The different ones that are out there, where they come from and some of their histories. I just don't tell him that we know absolutely positively that there's a supreme being that doesn't want us to eat shrimp. And you know what, at 5yrs old he can already see through the bs.

Not only is it no longer funny, it makes you look like a moron for even trying to use it this way. Next time, -butcher- use your own material. In my eyes, the fact that you are so certain that gods do not exist is just as bad as those who have belief without sufficient and verifiable evidence. Indeed, you are claiming to be sure of something that is, by definition, unknowable. Granted, the probability is extremely low, but it simply cannot be zero. You thinking that it is zero is evidence that you are in that 'special' group that shouldn't be throwing shade on anybody else's maturity.

      @robertcartier5088@robertcartier50884 жыл бұрын
    • @Hammer 001 Error. You've wasted all that typing... I do not have a god to defend. I am also a non-believer. But, unlike you, I don't claim to KNOW the unknowable. The word atheist has evolved to mean non-belief in deities, not the archaic (and inaccurate) notion that it means that there is any kind of certainty about the non-existence of any deities at all. That last bit would be an error in logic. If any real evidence comes along someday, I may eventually be convinced that one exists, but if it is anything like the idiotic story books tell it, I won't be a fan.

      @robertcartier5088@robertcartier50884 жыл бұрын
    • @Hammer 001 Didn't read it, not gonna. You are probably right. There is probably no god whatsoever... But can you not understand that from a logical standpoint, it cannot, and will never be totally, provably impossible? To think otherwise is a logical fallacy. The fact that everything you mention is poppycock is true, but irrelevant. If the is a deity, then it can be proven. If there isn't, nobody can prove that. You can say how stupid all the stories are, and that can be fun, too... but it all boils down to facts. And you cannot prove a negative proposition. If you cannot understand that, you need to look elsewhere, I have no time for this bullshit.

    • @Billy But Whole It is totally different because that is HOW science works. Once people disprove something with the scientific method and discover that they are doing things wrong and that it really doesn't work, they SCRAP it, as you just said, it's not done anymore, yes, once people believed it but they know better now because of what? SCIENCE. Yet, that will never happen with religion. NEVER. Does prayer work? Did it ever work? No and no. Will people stop believing and give in? NOPE. They will keep reading a two thousand-year old book of mythology as if it were all true and ignore all of the slavery, genocide, wife-beating, rape, pedophilia, and the number of people god kills along with the insane things he does and commands people to do and keep right on praying. They have done scientific studies and proven that prayer does not work and the religious keep right on praying and as far as hurting people with wrong "beliefs" no one can hold a candle to the pain and sorrow and death brought about by religious belief!! Wow. And as far as the Big Bang, you weren't there either and through science, yes, science so far, the best theory is the Big Bang and scientists have reams of research to back it up. Scientists with IQs and education that would be double yours and mine put together! So, who am I likely to side with, some preacher who is reading the same old shit that is terribly crude and flawed and frankly, insane with terrible morality gleaned from ONE book, or thousands of years of research and development by hundreds of the greatest minds on earth who can prove most of what they do? Hmm, not a tough question at all...

      @paulagwhyte1720@paulagwhyte17204 жыл бұрын
    • @Billy But Whole Well, that was nonsense! You cannot be serious?! You honestly think that RELIGION and its morality is KEEPING people kind and thoughtful and restraining them from crime and keeping them in line and from doing the "wrong things?" The Bible has a terrible moral compass and the moral compass of most religious people is totally backward. People do have different genders than just male and female. Your sexuality is in your brain, not your genitals. There are gay people and the LGBTQIA community exists and is just fine and doesn't need the religious peoples' approval or disapproval and there is nothing wrong with love between two consenting adults in the privacy of their own bedrooms. The religious need to get their noses out of other people's love lives and stop being bigoted and cruel because of an old mythology that ignores all of its other stupid laws like mixing fibers and planting mixed crops, no one cares about those, but everyone wants to jump all over the gay thing. People just need to butt out and grow up. I don't care what any of my neighbours do in the sex lives whether they are gay or straight and neither should anyone else UNLESS it includes victims like animals or children who cannot consent and that brings me right back to RELIGION!! Religion has been the biggest contributor to pedophilia ever because people who want to pick on children and abuse them can hide behind a religious title much more easily than anything else. They'll be covered for and moved around by their own church. And the bible condones rape, slavery, pedophilia, murder, genocide, beating children to DEATH, wife-beating, plural wives and old men sleeping with 12 year-old girls and you're going to try to tell me that it brings GOOD morality to the table? No, get rid of religion and the backward thinking it causes. Like thinking slavery was OK and using the bible for backup. Like gay bashing and using the bible for backup, I mean COME ON! We make our own purpose, we don't need one handed to us and religion never gave me a purpose nor any atheist that I know and we're all doing just fine. I have great purpose in life, thanks. As if I need an imaginary genie in the sky full of hideous ideology to have purpose! I just loved this comment I read here! stjernekikkert: "I'm glad that I live in Denmark, haven't met anyone my whole life who is religious. There are some who just keep the traditions alive because it's "hyggeligt" :-)* and yet we have one of the safest and most equal places on earth." Sounds like, pardon me, paradise! There was a preacher and within the first 20mins , he asked a room full of poor people to bring money to him for no apparent reason, which to my amazement, they did. his accomplice then walked from the back of the room, took the money and walked off, needless to say i left early. this for me sums up religion.

    @agee7777@agee77777 жыл бұрын
    • I was forced to go to church countless times, since I was a kid, because my father's family is catholic. We live in a different country, and somehow my dad never managed to make me go at home. When I was a teenager, I think around 15 or 16, I went to a church and for the first time in my life I didn't just snooze or think about random stuff but listened to the preacher. I was told that Christianity is the only good religion, that neither Judaism, Islam or Buddhism is. And then another preacher said the church is poor and not new anymore, while "someone drove here with their new car" like they were supposed to donate the money. That was the end of it for me. I don't have problem with faith and belief in one or multiple gods as much, because to me, it's more or less spirituality. But I hate church and organized religion. • adam garrett What I want to know about churches is... how come there no Q&A part at the end of a sermon... surely magical men in the sky and whatnot raises a few questions... not least of which is " erm... where did you come by this amazing information? " Every lecture I look at or science debate on KZhead... well they all have a Q&A so that the audience can ask relevant questions about the premises.... you'd imagine after thousands of years religions would have worked out that it a great way of involving the audience. I got into trouble at a school mass as a kid for that... I stuck my hand up... thats what you do in school right... I never even got to ask my question... I was frogmarched out of the church just for having a question. I was 7 I think... never believed this rubbish from the get go... but that was what propelled me from already atheist to anti-theist. over the last 40 years that stupid attempt to shut me up has created more atheists than just answering the fucking question.

    • Jim Elliott Its all a joke to me, anyway. The way I see it is if God was real I'm sure he or she would be completely understanding as to why people didnt believe. I mean if we are referring to that one specific god out of 2900 or so.

    • Doryphoros Because statistically atheists know more about the bible than the cherry picking, religious bigots. Read my second comment and pay attention. My point is that in numerous versions of the bible it says non believers will be punished. So why give someone the power of freewill and then punish them for something that is not harmful, but something as simple as just not believing? Lets hear it, smart guy.... im waiting.

      @metalphobos3632@metalphobos36327 жыл бұрын
    • Doryphoros Wrong again. You have once again showed your level of ignorance. Im not religious and i have higher morals and treat people better than most religious people. You dont need God, a book or religion to be a good person and thats where the problem lies. Live a life with good morals, treat people kindly, be considerate and compassionate, help others when you can etc. I dont need a book or someone to tell me to be that way. Its the way ive always been. In fact im more of a Christian than most Christians.

    • I grew up in a Christian area and most of them were drunks, coke heads or people who were pregnant by the age of 15. Thats not judging, thats reality. Its what i saw. I was an alter boy for 2 years, went to church and catholic schools. When i was old enough to know i didnt need an organized religion to lead a good life I left and went to a public highschool for the last couple yrs. Religious people are the biggest judges of all. They themselves cant even follow their own rules and theyre going to to judge me? Lol. Give me a break. Youre done "my friend".

So even if you have to take the big scales "on faith" sort of, you've still seen those same building blocks and so it isn't actually faith

Atheist and Theist would still stand as what they are. Neither term has anything to do with anything else. I fully or partially believe in the existence of a god, or gods. I fully, or partially, do not believe in the existence of a god, or gods. That's it.

      @lordsysop@lordsysop7 жыл бұрын
