Igor Levit’s music video for “J.S.Bach (arr. F.Busoni) Ich ruf zu dir Herr Jesu Christ- - Choral Prelude BWV 639” is from his new album “Encounter” which is released on 11 September on Sony Classical. It is a very personal double album marked by a desire for encounter and togetherness. The program includes rarely played arrangements of J.S. Bach and Johannes Brahms by Ferruccio Busoni and Max Reger, as well as Palais de Mari - Morton Feldman’s final work for piano.
Listen and order the album here: IgorLevit.lnk.to/EncounterAY
The 33-year-old once again steps beyond the limits of pure piano repertoire: in the Busoni transcriptions of Bach’s chorale preludes and the late Brahms, which are rarely heard as complete cycles, Levit assumes the role of an organist who fills vast church spaces. In Johannes Brahms’ “Vier ernste Gesänge,” he lends instrumental eloquence to overcoming the torments of fearing death. On the other hand, the gentle shimmer produced from its very few notes makes Morton Feldman's extremely quiet work for piano, “Palais de Mari” (1986), the epitome of a sensuous, transcendental realm of possibilities.

  • I can’t really explain why, but I almost can’t physically and psychologically listen until the end. My father played this when I was little, he’s gone 4 years now and I’m at a point in my life where I need to change my life path completely. This piece expresses despair for me, so much I feel it hurting deep inside.

    • A very interesting description of this piece of music, I think I feel the same ... it is quite peaceful, though very sad ... maybe yearning. I'm also at a point in my life where I think I have to change my path completely. I hope you've find your way in the meantime 🙏

    • Yes... agree. Now i know what to listen to whenever i need a good cry. I honestly thought its not possible to be more depressing than Chopin's prelude. I was wrong.

  • Ich dachte, der Politpianist kann nur Politik. Aber er hat auch Dinu Lipatti gut verstanden und liefert hier Hervorragendes ab. Bach muss man stets beim Wort nehmen. Und in diesem Stück sitzt einer ganz unten im Loch und ruft mit zweifelnder, schwer gewordener, matter, aber nicht ganz hoffungsloser Stimme nach oben - genau das kommt musikalisch zum Ausdruck.

  • The interpretation of the piece through the piano is very good. The visual interpretation is off putting. The visualizations are sentimental and unoriginal. There is so much being said in Bach's music. To reduce it to hands reaching out to each other is simplistic and trite.

    • if you don't count yourself as an "average audience which brings the money" or even if you do, you should know that your comment was nothing but unnecessary. If you personally don't like Igor Levit, the way he plays the piano or his interpretation of this piece, that's totally OK. But if you really feel the need to make your opinion public (which you have the right to of course), you should at least try to criticize constructively, because the way you did it in this comment of yours, it only makes your personality seem very immature and full of hate, which i hope and believe isnt true. :)
