Sufjan Stevens - Mystery of Love (From "Call Me By Your Name" Soundtrack)
CALL ME BY YOUR NAME is a sensual and transcendent tale of first love, based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman, written by Oscar® nominee James Ivory and starring Armie Hammer (The Man from U.N.C.L.E, On the Basis of Sex) and Timothée Chalamet (Lady Bird, Little Women). Its soundtrack is a mix of 80s pop, classical compositions & songs by singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens, including two songs written specifically for the film.
Listen to the full soundtrack: soundtracks.lnk.to/CallMeByYo...
While the soundtrack for CALL ME BY YOUR NAME is a compilation of tracks by numerous musicians, Guadagnino decided he wanted to approach American singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens to create a song especially for the film. “An artist for whom I have enormous admiration is Sufjan. His voice is fantastic and angelic, and his lyrics are so sharp and deep and full of sorrow and beauty. The music is so haunting. All these elements were the ones I wanted to envision in the film.”
While Guadagnino knew that Stevens had never collaborated on a movie before, he reached out. Stevens read the book, they had a long conversation, and the result was that he wrote not one, but two original songs for the film: “Mystery of Love” and “Visions of Gideon”.
The soundtrack for CALL ME BY YOUR NAME also includes tracks by John Adams and Ryuichi Sakamoto as well as pieces written by Erik Satie, Maurice Ravel and Johann Sebastian Bach. As the film is set in the 1980s, Guadagnino chose period Italian pop music (including Giorgio Moroder & Joe Esposito’s “Lady Lady Lady”) for the radio, but particularly spotlights The Psychedelic Furs’ anthem “Love My Way”. “I love The Psychedelic Furs,” says Guadagnino. “It’s kind of autobiographical, because I remember listening to that song when I was seventeen and being completely affected by it. I wanted to pay homage to myself then.”

LYRICS
Oh, to see without my eyes
The first time that you kissed me
Boundless by the time I cried
I built your walls around me
White noise, what an awful sound
Fumbling by Rogue River
Feel my feet above the ground
Hand of God, deliver me
Oh, oh woe-oh-woah is me
The first time that you touched me
Oh, will wonders ever cease?
Blessed be the mystery of love
Lord, I no longer believe
Drowned in living waters
Cursed by the love that I received
From my brother's daughter
Like Hephaestion, who died
Alexander's lover
Now my riverbed has dried
Shall I find no other?
Oh, oh woe-oh-woah is me
I'm running like a plover
Now I'm prone to misery
The birthmark on your shoulder reminds me
How much sorrow can I take?
Blackbird on my shoulder
And what difference does it make
When this love is over?
Shall I sleep within your bed
River of unhappiness
Hold your hands upon my head
'Til I breathe my last breath
Oh, oh woe-oh-woah is me
The last time that you touched me
Oh, will wonders ever cease?
Blessed be the mystery of love

Everyone here is saying that they cried after they read the book/watched the movie but I had a bit different response and I would like to know if anyone feels the same way as I do. In my case, my heart just aches... It makes me feel empty inside and the pain fills me, but no tears come out of me. Their love story feels like a distant yet heartbreaking event and the ending keeps me awake at night sometimes, similar to looking back on your happy memories in the past when you are currently not.
Yes yes i do get it, I had the same experience, I had sleepless nights thinking bout this. It makes me think bout all kinds of things and makes me feel emotions idk how to express. It did do something to me

@@Lena-cf7ds I think this kind of feeling/pain lasts longer for me. I live in northern Italy, near to Crema. The landscapes and towns are litterally spot on, during summer it feels exactly as if you're there. Most towns haven't changed much since the 80s also. This was one of the reasons why, after watching it at 15 years old I was obsessed for whole years and I still love this movie dearly, 5 years later
Vicenza, Bologna, Ferrara, Verona, Padua, Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Cremona ... Non so perché mi e fuggita Crema? Chi sa se devo ritornare? Ero un ragazzo fortunato perché avevo in questi anni la curiosità e il coraggio di vivere un po la storia di "Call me by your name". Lui si sposava dopo ma la storia non finiva come nel libro di André Aciman. Fortunatamente.

This song just puts a black hole in my heart. Soothing yet so depressing.
I watched this with my mother a short time after my outing. Even though she never said anything against it, it was a time when I feared she could. But after we watched this movie she tooked me in her armes and said the only thing she ever worried about was that I may receive hate from other for holding a other girls hand. Learning that this was the only thing she ever worried about brought tears to my eyes.
Best wishes for you😭😭
Crying
I just saw the movie today, and I didn't cry while watching it. But the after effect is just strange. It's like I can't stop thinking about it. I want to cry but I can't. And then this song- it's just so overwhelming- I don't know what to feel anymore.
Same!! The first time I watched it, I didn't cry at all..but the days after I just couldn' stop thinking about it...I needed to listen to the soundtrack, to rewatch some scenes... Then I watched the movie again and I cried a river!! I think it's impossibile to get over this movie..
kay the exact same thing happened to me
Looks like it's one of the side effects of the movie, the first time I saw it I though that it was a pretty good movie, then I was not able to stop myself thinking about it, and I felt that I was missing something, it took me month to heal the void I felt in my chest, literally.
It got even worst after I read the novel, such a bitter sweet end, I cannot stop thinking about it
i feel you, i feel you.
this movie and book is something ive never ever experienced in my life before. its haunting. it makes you sad. it makes you happy. it makes you nostalgic. it makes you long for somthing youve lost, or never had, or want. its been 2 years and i still cant get over it. i rewatch this movie once a month. i reread the book every 3 months. i always notice new things. i research. i ache, i cry, i love. theres so many emotions at the same time, it makes your head spin. this is what true art looks like. this is beauty. this is what you call a masterpiece.

I love your description Literally perfect 💕
It kinda gives me nostalgia that never ever happened.
I cant describe it but this soundtrack is just so heart-fluttering, light, dark and full of what love should feel like. It fully encapsulates that summer in Italy, the lanscapes, the air, the continunous harp sounds like a continuum of their footsteps. The voice, a very airy subtle, medium register, almost makes it feel like a distant memory... It just feels very soothing. This film is a masterpiece, too. Just the warm colouring, that reminds us of summer. The sweetness of fruits that were shown - a refreshing taste. The water, the freshness - a feeling we love on a blazing hot day in the summer; inducing nostalgia. The archaeology, the discovery and curiosity that charms through us. The allusion to Plato's symposium, too, I mean, hello?? This is why we just feel so nostalgic while watching this. It really crafted all the elements of film so nicely that watching it feels timeless.
The song makes me feel like i have lost something i never had
I lost summer

every once in a while I find myself looking for this song and it brings back all the memories, sensations and emotions I created and stored in my memory from the very first moment I listened to it. One night I randomly asked one of my friends what song would she love to listen to if she was about to die. She introduced me to this, it pierced my heart from the first listening. Then she asked me to watch the movie. We are emotional soulmates after that..I realized that she's one of the most gorgeous souls in the world. I'm forever indebted to her for introducing me to CMBYN. I don't have words to describe how it feels. Soo hurting but so so right. Like I can't bear the pain, but I don't want the pain to go away, instead I'm so happy that I get to experience it. The overwhelming feeling. Like a beautiful beautiful daydream. I'm extremely happy that I got to dream it, but I'm really sad cause it's not not real.. And to know that I'll probably never experience a love like that.

The words of Elio‘s father touched me the most. I cried so hard....and the way he looked at Elio while saying all that. Everything he said was so real, pure, honest, touching, sad, emotional. He said everything I fear inside and always knew, even when I was younger. This movie was so long inside my head...it really hurt. The gay scene in real life in general is so superficial. I want to be 20 again. Being a bit naive, joyful, happy spirit, enjoying life to the fullest...Cause all the things youth gives you, will never come back. Now I‘m 39 and feel like everything is gone.
TH. Aries i don't wanna grow up. I'm 19
Yeah! The words of Elio's dad were amazing! I was gladly surprise with Elio's family! They are wonderful! This movie is very special!
Well, at first I felt kind of empty as well. Then I remembered that it's a movie. The words of Oliver's dad are *made* to make you think 'hey, this love is special, you'll never have it, or have it again'. But it's a fake, constructed relationship in an ideal environment and in a very limited time frame.

Wuilkild Perez yes !
I think I have seen this movie three or four times, all of them were equally incredible. The only movie that I actually find deep value in rewatching and I think about it from time to time. It has left a mark on me that will never disappeared. Every time you watch it, different associations arise depending or your place in life and mood at the time. I must have listened to this song over a hundred times and today the song and music video touched me deeply again, as if it was the first time seeing the movie again. Because of things happening right now, what I take with me from the story of Elio and Oliver is this: even if love changes or ends, that does not make those memories of true love any less real. And kissing someone, saying "I love you" or anything is not what makes love. Elio and Oliver were in love, mutually in love, long before they spoke about it or kissed, maybe even before they knew it themselves. Love is magical, a sudden fall, it changes you and your world forever. Yet, only because it is true love does not mean that the practical circumstances allows the two lovers to be together, to be a couple. Being in love and being a couple are two very different things. You can be a couple and not in love, and in love and not a couple. My love and I have never been a couple, never clearly declared our mutual feelings, yet I know that we are in love. Sometimes you just know. Words are futile devices, as a wise man once said. But my love is happy with someone else, and so I am happy for my love. I truly wish him the best and i wish myself the best, and therefore I must let him go. Not cut him out from my life, I could never do that even if I tried, but let him go, so that our love can live.
This is so beautifully written 👏🏻

Sufjan is such a brilliant artist. I don't know if someone has noticed it yet but if you look closely at the lyrics of this song you'd find that it has traces of the events of the original book written by André Aciman. Mystery of Love is a little summary of the book Call Me By Your Name.
"Later!" The word, the voice, the attitude. I'd never heard anyone use "later" to say goodbye before. It sounded harsh, curt, and dismissive, spoken with the veiled indifference of people who may not care to see or hear from you again.

This movie reminds me so much of my 16 year old self when I was in love with a guy much older than me. I really understand how it feels like when someone you love chooses a “normal life” with someone else instead of being himself and loving a guy like me if that is what he world want… Now he has a “normal” life, and I have a broken heart. He said I would meet many new people out there who will love me even more than he did, which sounds like something Oliver would say, the pain will go, the wounds will heal, but these scars on my heart are staying with me forever 💔
So I went to Crema in summer 2022. The hype had died down and the town of Crema was quiet, which added to its charm. I had this song on loop the whole three days I spent there. Yeah I understand, it's like me, I live in Rome, everyone say I'm lucky because I can see Colosseum and other places in Rome everyday, but when you live there you don't pay attention to that little things, you pass by and go to school/work...
why this movie makes me nostalgic about memories I never had?
SAMEEE OML

무의식적으로 4년전이면 2016년 이겠지 이 생각 했는데 2018.. 나 혼자 추억에 잠겨 사는 거 같다.. 요즘 너무 지치네
The time they had was short but their feelings will hunt them forever. Just glad they had the chance to feel the intensity of great love. ❤❤
i watched this movie yesterday and when im finished i was like “meh”. but i dont know why, i cant stop thinking about the movie. the relationship between elio and oliver, i get satisfyed when i think about them. i hope we can all experience relationships like that. i would give my kidney just for a summer love i really need a relationship and this movie showed me how lonely i am
No one needs a relationship in order to feel whole.
You're literally so ignorant
That's exactly what happened to me. I saw it, and I thought 'Well, it's not bad, but not a great movie', but it has something, I don't know why, that breaks you inside. I still crying everytime I remember it, like the movie happened to me, but it didn't. I guess that's why it is a great movie, because it gets deeper and deeper into you
The First Time that I saw this movie I cried.
Dorib u r not alone, and I even cried harder when reading the novel
I cried Too

Ya me too :( this film affected me so hard for a long time
The beauty of Call Me By Your Name is in its scenery, dialogues, but above all in her music

the very last thing I said to him that winter was I love you. And it was the last thing he said to me, too. A couple of hours later I left. When I came back to see him just a week later things had changed. It'd become awkward and clumsy, almost a dream. After that I never saw him again but never forgot him. He was my very first love. A decade ago I was thinking about him and decided to search him out online. The first thing that came up was his obituary. He was the very first boy I was ever in love with. That winter had been amazing. Learning of his death hit me like a freight train. I cried. And I was by then in my early forties.
richard courchene sorry for the immense loss that you suffered....wishing u all thr best in life and hope you to find true love again
❤️
that's freaking emotional and even I'm in the same situation with my partner. 😢😢😢
You'll find love again
I really want to meet him and talk to him again , but I don't because I know I will start waiting for his texts and replies and that he will never feel the same way cause he is straight. But I really don't want to wake up one day and know that something has happened to him.
It’s 2022 and I cannot get over this movie. I cannot stop crying of feelings when I listen to this songs. Even happy songs like Paris Latino makes me want to come back to this movie. No other movie makes me feel like that. Never.
even after years years later, i'm still watching just to cure something or expect something ??😂 a very beautiful movie❤

This movie and especially the ending with "visions of Gideon" left me melancholic and sad for a couple of months
whoever edited this is a genius
"Elio. Elio Elio Elio Elio Elio Elio Elio Elio." "Oliver... I remember everything."
