Un Guk Kim (DPR) Breaks Weightlifting World Record - London 2012 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: oly.ch/Subscribe
DPR Korea's Un Guk Kim sets a new world record with a total lift of 327kg to win the gold medal in the men's 62kg event at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Although men's weightlifting has always been on the programme of the Olympic Games - except for at the 1900, 1908 and 1912 editions -- women started to participate only at the 2000 Games in Sydney.
The Olympic weightlifting programme has evolved greatly over time. Today, weightlifters compete in snatch and clean and jerk, and are placed according to their total combined result. From the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, men have competed in eight weight categories and women in seven. This total of 15 events remains unchanged.

So this is basically a win or die situation. Literally.
lol the world may never know lol...
shut up stop spreading slander, if people were killed as much as people like you say they are then the population of that country would be like only 1m
undeadpresident God you're an idiot, he's talking about the weight that he's lifting. Lift the weight, you win. Fail to lift all that weight that is over your head, have it potentially fall anywhere on your body, which would most likely either severely injure you or straight up kill you.
Timothy Van Graafeiland No, OP meant that since the lifter is from North Korea, he would face severe consequences for not winning. OP was referring to possibly getting killed for it which is an exaggeration in my opinion, but he would definitely face consequences being that he's from North Korea.
mliniman you make it sound like they are going to a gulag for not winning a sporting competition. Not true. But like any country if you don't cut it at sports then you have to do something else that you probably wouldn't like to do as much.
For those wondering why he saluted at the end, I think there are two reasons: 1, he is most likely a soldier, due to the conscription laws in the country, and 2, north koreans are taught that going to the army is the most honourable thing, even better than going to university. Therefore the salute was likely a sign of great respect
thank you!
N. Korea culture is very military based. So that's kinda normal
North Korea's entire GDP was spent on this guy.
actually look at fat kim jong un
wkwk
I'm weak af
HAHAHAHA . . . .
That's funny
He failed the first time. I'm sure he got a phone call from KJU that said "camp 14" and he succeeded the second time.
lol
omg mate. you cracked me up
best comment on youtube 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
this is why youtube comments are the best
where did u learn such a knowledgeable informative thing ,
His jump at the end was so precious
Like you
This is probably the smartest sport in which to participate, if you're from N. Korea. You have to eat heartily to get this strong. He's probably one of the best fed men in N. Korea.
LGunchained besides the high ranking officers and Kim Jong un and his family
I was thinking the same thing
north korea hasn't had food shortages and mass famine in over 20 years lol
@@saintnicole3209 🤣
@@saintnicole3209 ah did you go to all the rural villages in the drp and ask them if they have enough food?
1:22 when you remember Kim Jon Un is watching
🤣😂🤣😂
😂😂
Guys, it's not funny. Making fun on someone's achievement is never funny. Even though he is from North Korea, we should respect him.
Well said
No one is taking his achievement away. We re just making jokes about the regime
Well you must be fun at parties, ppl can make jokes if they wish
@@liamcosgrave69 Telling a bad joke at a party isn't fun.
@@CommunistBot and what consists a bad joke is subjective, not just based on what you specifically find funny
comments section 90% slamming north korea 10% actually about the sport
His coach took him quickly backstage. "Time to go back to North Korea, son"
+Kofukufufu no. everywhere in the world is real
LikeaDJG u missed his point
1:05 he was having flashbacks of the labor camp they said he was going to if he failed
He still can hear the voices of horror ringing in his ears.
bruh
Crusader Nikolai . Go re Friday
lol true
He is like an anime character who gets stronger by remembering the power of friendship but in this case he remembered the power of Kimship
This was of course only made possible by the great leader Kim Jong Un.
I think it was him in disguise
He had a similar name!
Yes, because if everyone would get that much food like him, everyone would be fat. And so he eats it as a favour, so all North Koreans can get really sporty.
Carmelo pearman i
Thanks
You can see him having a second of a flashback of his family getting murdered if he does not win this competition. 1:03
Ahah
Stfu!! You're the devil!!!
Lol
OMG :')
+Lizard Queen lol...funny
I can't get over how easy he made it look. My favorite athlete in the sport. Absolute stud.
He trained for this by lifting Kim Jong-un once a day.
🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂😂
when he broke the world record the anti aircraft artillery was lowered from his family and they won't get sent to Camp 14
L
Now his family gets to eat
Peak
+A Pacing Goose You're god damn right, maybe has a new building too.
why are people so racist to people sometimes. its stupid
No you mean his family doesn't get sent to camp 14.
Now his family is rich
So that's where North Korea's food went...
I wonder if all athletes from NK have to go surrender their medals to KJU and the media then tells the country that it is their leader who has won all the medals.
lol probably
In 2010 apparently the North Korean media declared that they won the football World Cup while they merely qualified.
+Shoaib Ahmed this was a hoax
That was a hoax.
Atleast they've got some medals. Your country? The last time I checked they were desperately begging for cricket to be an olympic sport so they can finally get a medal for their 1.4 billion ppl.
I like how the coach always has his hand on Kim, probably in fear that he'll run away..
i dont think it doesn't really matters what nationality the man is. He's done a great achievement through hard work and he deserves to be applauded.
Basically the entire North Korea sacrificed their entire country so this one guy can get the gold medal
Lol so trie
Everyone trying his best to pull the best joke thinking it's funny.
You too and this was the best try wkwkwk
Not all of them are, but there are few that made me giggle.
Ayyyy...any North Koreans in the comment section?
Probs not

bro was deff saying "love you mom, see you in heaven if I don't break it" for that 2-3 second wait.
With those arms in that weight division, you can win almost everything.
What are you talking about? Like that he has short arms or muscular
@@tetevenskatazigula6788 muscular 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
it's a shame the arms only do like 10% of work in olympic weightlifting haha
really great! All that dedication paid off
Excellent lift great form
North Korea are reading our comments
Forreal but how can they understand English?
The people dont have net, but the Gov and surveillance teams do. And they use it and have people manipulate what they want, especially news and media. The elite and the people that run these services for the Gov have been well educated and speak/read/write great English if they need to.
Wow this is incredible! Almost 3x his body weight!
awesome. proud of you!

Absolutely, FANTASTIC!!!
His little jump was adorable... ^o^
Amazing lift
Very impressive.
Kim-Jong Un is proud of him :3
What really insults me about this comment section is that everyone is cracking jokes about him, when he lifted a new World Record. Thanks for offering a positive comment.
+DualScreenGamers A world record is supposed to be celebrated :3 I didnt even recognize the comment section :P
Most of the jokes are not about this incredible athlete (who may or may not be clean), but about the terrible country/prison he comes from and sadly had to represent here.
+barath4545 i thought everyone is making fun of him becuz hes from North Korea
I hope he has a movie about him
They killed his pet goldfish as pre-motivation, with his family held hostage.
wow ! what a practice they have!!

Gave me chills
I guess his family got food for a week for him doing that.
Pretty sure he got a year's worth of food.
@@thesun849 don't forget it's north Korea they don't play that nice sun
The supreme leader could lift even more!
What I'm relatively proud of was that just about everyone in that hall was cheering him on.... you heard the noise. Don't care where someone is from, just want them to do well. Though admittedly most people in the hall probably wouldn't know the difference between north and south Korea ;)
Now he and his family can have some food.
He did it for the dear leader
He was so happy:)
He just saved him and his family's life.
he looked so happy :)
cant help but smile at that salute though.
Fair play to this lad! He deserves freedom
Northern Ireland deserves it, much much more.
They've got freedom. Americans don't.
AWESOME!
Wow, it makes me laugh to see so many comments about the DPRK that isn't even true.
Don't mind them. Search up any other video of any other guy not from America or it's ally countries and you'll find these same nationalities hating and mocking in the comments section. They are all rotten to the core. They all suffer from inferiority complexes and hate makes them feel better about their miserable, worthless lives. It's a part of their culture.
TheMishmisheh That was such a huge generalization. It really makes you look unintelligent.
Thats probably the first time hes heard an audience cheer for real and not out of fear
First time for nations colonized by your country too.
@@yujimemon8221 Yeah, so many racists in this comment section. They don't think North Korea is a state run by human beings.

1:20 this is the first time I’ve seen a North Korean express joy
Well said.
do you think he got to keep the medal?
Why wouldn't he? If it that was a joke, it was a terrible attempt at humour; if you are being serious, then you're just sad and ignorant.
+Kai H. It's a serious question. I'm curious as to if he actually gets to keep his medal. I don't see how that's ignorant. I mean it's not like I would want his medal to be taken away of course he should keep it. I'm just curious as to how that sort of thing would be handled considering he lives in the most strict and secretive country on the planet.
***** Ah ok, apologies. There's so many comments like this and I'm just really sick of them. To answer your question, yes, they do get to keep their gold medals, this has nothing to do with politics. In fact, North Korean gold medal winners in the Olympics are awarded gold watches and mansions by the government (at least in recent Olympics).
no it was melted into a nuclear alloy
+Stuart O I'm pretty sure he doesn't live in North Korea...
Bill Bradley said of playing against the Soviet Olympic team, “They were tough to beat. After all, they were playing for their lives.”
Not true. So not true.
How gullible you have to be to believe this
Well played

show respect to north korea
I'll show respect to the athlete and his fellow countrymen. I will not show respect to a tyrannical government. (I'm not just talking about NK here)
impressive! holy shit!
watching this felt so painful. it is so evident that he's confined no matter what he does and his love for the sport is retained by the government of North Korea. Even the coach had to always hold him firm so he won't make a escape. Truly sad moment more than victory.
Amazing. He’s so lucky to see abroad
*breaks world record* "That's not the greatest there's ever been"
I am not very familiar with the rules, but I think he meant that in individual weight lifted it's not the highest, it's the world record due to the total sum of the weight he lifted in his attempts
@@yujimemon8221 Thanks. I figured I was missing something
