DPR Korea's Un Guk Kim sets a new world record with a total lift of 327kg to win the gold medal in the men's 62kg event at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Although men's weightlifting has always been on the programme of the Olympic Games - except for at the 1900, 1908 and 1912 editions -- women started to participate only at the 2000 Games in Sydney.
The Olympic weightlifting programme has evolved greatly over time. Today, weightlifters compete in snatch and clean and jerk, and are placed according to their total combined result. From the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, men have competed in eight weight categories and women in seven. This total of 15 events remains unchanged.

    • undeadpresident God you're an idiot, he's talking about the weight that he's lifting. Lift the weight, you win. Fail to lift all that weight that is over your head, have it potentially fall anywhere on your body, which would most likely either severely injure you or straight up kill you.

      @Honch_@Honch_9 жыл бұрын
    • Timothy Van Graafeiland No, OP meant that since the lifter is from North Korea, he would face severe consequences for not winning. OP was referring to possibly getting killed for it which is an exaggeration in my opinion, but he would definitely face consequences being that he's from North Korea.

    • mliniman you make it sound like they are going to a gulag for not winning a sporting competition. Not true. But like any country if you don't cut it at sports then you have to do something else that you probably wouldn't like to do as much.

      @undeadpresident@undeadpresident9 жыл бұрын
  • For those wondering why he saluted at the end, I think there are two reasons: 1, he is most likely a soldier, due to the conscription laws in the country, and 2, north koreans are taught that going to the army is the most honourable thing, even better than going to university. Therefore the salute was likely a sign of great respect

    • Why wouldn't he? If it that was a joke, it was a terrible attempt at humour; if you are being serious, then you're just sad and ignorant.

    • +Kai H. It's a serious question. I'm curious as to if he actually gets to keep his medal. I don't see how that's ignorant. I mean it's not like I would want his medal to be taken away of course he should keep it. I'm just curious as to how that sort of thing would be handled considering he lives in the most strict and secretive country on the planet.

    • ***** Ah ok, apologies. There's so many comments like this and I'm just really sick of them. To answer your question, yes, they do get to keep their gold medals, this has nothing to do with politics. In fact, North Korean gold medal winners in the Olympics are awarded gold watches and mansions by the government (at least in recent Olympics).
