- ABOUT THIS VIDEO -
Home generators are becoming increasingly widespread as severe weather occurrences occur more frequently. Everyone who lives in a suburban region that experiences frequent power outages following storms is accustomed to hearing dozens of them buzzing across the neighbourhood. And if you don't want to, you don't have to commit to a large unit that is permanently installed in your garden; instead, there are portable units that you can use when necessary and take with you when you go camping and having barbecues. Prices are decreasing, making generators more affordable for almost anyone who wants to keep one on hand.

  • I want a video that compares the sound output of an inverter generator and a conventional generator, both at low load and at high load. Both objective measures and subjective measures (recorded sound) / DBa meter

  • Just completed the break-in period and so far the unit is operating perfectly kzhead.infoUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y . I was amazed by just how quiet this little guy is. I kept having to walk down the driveway to the generator to make sure it was still running. In fact, the most annoying noise coming from the set-up is a high-pitched chirping coming from the pressure regulator on the propane line. I suppose it's possible my other propane-powered generator's pressure regulator is making the same noise, but the generator itself is so loud I've never noticed it. Build quality so far is excellent. My only nit is the service panel is a little tricky to remove. I feel like I might break off one of the plastic tabs when bending it back. I probably just need to work out the technique, so will not hold it against Champion.Next week I intend to fully load the unit to charge a large battery pack and will update this review if there's any problem (3000W continuous load vs a rated 3100W capacity while using propane). Absent any trouble there, I'm 100% pleased with this purchase.

  • Circuit boards in most newer appliances, computers etc are sensitive to voltage fluctuations. That's why Inverter generators were invented, to keep the THD below 3%. The Duromax and the Westinghouse models you describe are not inverters and can fry equipment. They're meant for using tools etc off-site.

    • Not totally true I think. Most now have a AVR built in and for extra protection you can even install at plug entrance to house a AVR. And for sure add a starting unit on AC system to manage its operation.

    • I have the Westinghouse generator they showed and was disappointed a few months ago when it wouldn't start because it was cold, switched to propane and it fired right up. Later I took the carb apart and it was pristine, what the hell. Started looking in the manual and it clearly states to manually choke it in Cold weather hmph, the auto choke doesn't stay closed long enough to start the engine. Haven't had any more problems.

  • The image shows an RV in the background with 2 people sitting at a picnic table apparently talking, with a laptop on it with a generator in the grass at the end of the table. Not! They won't be able to hear each other. The imagery that companies come up with is senseless. Why would I drag out an entire generator for a laptop when a small lightweight hand sized battery pack to jump start my car is made for that and my cell phones with a light built in? In reality I wouldn't bother bringing my laptop from the RV. This type of foolery would actually cause me to RUN from a brand. If a company can't be more realistic in their advertising like maybe an image of a guy with his flashlight aimed at it in the rain with steel toed boots and a hard hat on, maybe your product is too wimpy for my needs. Put a few downed trees in the background. With all of that being said, all you did was go from low wattage to high wattage generators. You didn't spell out why any of those were truly the best. For example, Westinghouse is a good brand but what makes it better than say, Generac? I can find the same if not better wattage, dual fuel and everything else you mentioned in a Honda and depending on where I shop, I may or may not find it cheaper. What about comparing warranties? Wait, you didn't mention warranties. That should have been at the top of the list with all of these products coming from Asia requiring MORE money to guarantee us what the original amount we pay has always guaranteed us in the past, that the item will work. Now there's a scam that we have to give more money in case it doesn't work we can get it fixed or get one that does work. Listen up manufacturers! I pay you a large sum of money for your product to WORK WHEN I PURCHASE IT. I expect it to continually work and not be broken the second time I use it! I will no longer pay extra for you to guarantee it will work. I am not kidding when I say I will begin class action lawsuits from here on if your high dollar products fail. I hope somehow Samsung sees this! I do not recall hearing options on these generators such as push button start. What about EZ pull? We should be hearing things like easy start in the top generators to buy because after the first use, you might break your back and arm trying to start the generator. You are telling us the best to buy for 2023 by wattage and the actual best can normally be decided on Amazon on how many people buy an item and how satisfied or dissatisfied they are usually with the complaints being fairly spot on. This video should have been researched first with actual top-notch reviews and reasons on why these particular generators stand out, but this was a failure. Even though I agree that some of these brands have been serving people well in the past, I suggest everyone take this actual list with a grain of salt and do your own research. One of the things I don't like is seeing is generators covered with aerodynamic plastic. What is being hidden by it? If a seal begins to leak oil after the third use, that is a manufacturing weakness, and the buyer would not know that they need to have it repaired until the warranty has expired. I personally would NEVER buy a generator made to look pretty. I want to see any possible melted wires or parts and oil leaks. I don't want to hear that because I removed unnecessary plastic to troubleshoot something, I voided the warranty. If there is one. My first doubt about this list is probably because of generators that I didn't see. In the higher wattage generators, I expected to see Honda but only saw it as a lower wattage "best" and Generac was not even an honorable mention. I do not have a Generac because even the USED ones are high dollar but if I had that kind of cash there would be one outside of my dwelling. Just in case any first-time buyers read this, I don't care if you are young and strong, just trust me and make sure your first purchase has the option to push button start as well as pull start. You will thank me later. If you are a first time buyer, pay close attention to the advertised decibels because your typical generator is louder than your typical push mower. In my opinion I'd rather listen to a helicopter. RV generators are generally quieter but don't expect to run much in your house with one. Pick a regular generator and you will discover you will NOT be running it at an RV park. The first time I used one during a winter storm I believe I was the only one using it that first night. I drove 5 miles away before I finally couldn't hear it anymore. I mention this for perspective because no one told me what it sounded like when I bought it for Y2K. Lastly, if you are using it for long term emergency use, LOCK IT UP. That winter storm power outage lasted over a month for a lot of people and thieves were unplugging them and stealing them by the dozens! A bar owner opened his bar for people to stay warm and sleep and had nearly 50 people there sheltering until someone stole his generator. Most of these people had nowhere to go. About 2 weeks in, people had bought as many generators as they could get from stores that finally opened then DOUBLED the price selling them out of the backs of their trucks. If they can hear it, they will come for it. Screw it down and get the thickest logging chain you can find and lock it to something. Preferably in a locked shed not too far away. I lived through it. I got a little off topic. I apologize. One last thing. If you don't know how many watts you need, a 2000sq. ft. home may average maybe between 6000 and 7000 watts. Remember that's about average. A microwave is generally 1000w. Could be smaller but we are talking average. Your appliances are not running all the time. Note that the more things you add to the generator, the more fuel it will use, requiring you to fill up more often. Considering if there is no power the gas pumps won't be working. Also, depending on the generator, and your power needs you MIGHT get between 6 and 8 hours per tank. My old Y2K generator has only been used twice but for a couple weeks. I had my neighbors hooked up to it also. It is a 5 gallon and ran out of fuel every 5-6 hours. So... yeah. Have plenty of fuel and shut it off when you can. I had 25 gallons stored and it had gotten old, but it got us through running poorly until I made it 60 miles away to an open gas station. Generator ran great with fresh fuel. Change the oil when it tells you to. I hope all of my ramblings help someone because I had to figure this out all by myself. Peace.
