Thank you so much for watching. I’m a little nervous as I write this, but I genuinely hope that there’s a place in FFXIV content for these longer form pieces telling stories from the game’s past, because it would be my absolute pleasure to make more like this. I’ve learnt a lot, even from starting this project til today, and I can promise you that if this video has the interest, I will make another, and it will be better than this one - I’ve learnt a lot to improve especially the visual even since finishing this video. Also I wish I could’ve found more of Kindred’s prog footage. Have a fantastic rest of your day, and if you haven’t already, give DSR a go.

Hearing them all scream HEAL HIM and having the chat spam SAVE HIM over and over. I've never experienced such a collective community moment like that before. It was incredible.

  • It's really clever the lb2 vs lb3 mechanic, cause when Haurchefaunt dies, you're fighting through The Vault, a Dungeon, where you'd only have lb2 available. Such a clever call back to that moment, while giving a hint of how to do it right. So incredibly clever, I'm not an Ultimate player, but boy do I love seeing the design Squenix can pull out.

  • For years since Haurchefant’s death, players had long been asking if there was a way to save him. If there was something different that could be done. And this showed what could have happened. The Dragonsong War at its absolute worst. Just showing us that Haurchefant and Ysayle both needed to die for the best possible outcome. It was heartbreaking then, and it was heartbreaking watching this all unfold. A masterpiece of a fight.

    • @stormvexed thats true, but I think it also misses an important point. Whenever something bad happens, it is painful, and sometimes there's no greater purpose. Other times, though, in some terrible way, it led to the current reality. Wondering about what ifs and could have beens has a bit of a detrimental effect on people. That is for narratives, but also for life. I've long been convinced that in other stories, like ff7, sparing characters would always have a cost. Save Aerith, Tifa dies. Save Zack, Cloud suffers worse.

  • And here's a new can of worms to think about...the result of the alternate timeline...Ilberd normally would use the eyes of Nidhogg to attack Baelsar's Wall, which would lead us into Stormblood as the reason to go into Gyr Abania and Doma, that's not there in the alternate timeline, so what would be the reason to enter Gyr Abania; if at all? Then we get to Garlemald's secret weapon...we wouldn't have been able to delay it, nor even meet Zenos; who normally would stop it entirely because he wanted nothing to stop him and the player from a fight...which he doesn't because he hasn't met the player yet. Omega and Shinryu doesn't happen either. TL;DR: Does saving Harchefant bring about the 7th Umbral Calamity? OR do we still get a visit to Shadowbringers?

    @SpeedWarrior93@SpeedWarrior934 ай бұрын
    • Recall that the eyes were not the only thing Ilberd used. He did disguise his forces in eorzean GC gear so even without the eyes we would have been dragged into the Ala Mhigan war (though with Papalymo alive) but what about moving forward to Omega's raids? Hraesvelgr is the dragon that saves us as the rift collapses upon Omega's defeat and destruction, how would we escape that scenario? Or would we just so happen to clash with Omega just right to trigger what was seen in his Ultimate, TOP?

      @craigfunk3453@craigfunk34534 ай бұрын
    • Shadowbringers happens because of Crystal Tower, so we'd still go anyways. We just wouldn't have Zenos cleaning up the problem for us over on the Source. And that's assuming Ilberd isn't just given the Heart of Sabik, an Allagan relic, or some other Aether-heavy artifact instead to carry out his plans and still lead us into Stormblood.

      @wakkaseta8351@wakkaseta83514 ай бұрын
    • @@wakkaseta8351 that makes sense, since it's the Ascians who pushed Ilberd to use the 'eyes' along with the despair and hatred of the dead to help create the powerful primal Shinryuu. So the guess that the ascians could give him another powerful relic or something similar would very likely still happen, though with a different result of what the primal might look like since Shinryuu's appearance was connected to the draconic power Niddhog's eyes still held

    • Its also interesting to note how it affects the warring triad. Thordan didn't get around to absorbing or even awakening the Warring triad in this new timeline (he has to get the key from Bismarck himself instead of swooping in to steal it from us). If the warring triad never awakens, Varis' closest friend Regula van Hydrus never dies while saving an enemy child (unukhalhai). He was the one who suggested teaming up with us to fight the triad. He is loyal towards Varis wholeheartedly but also wants to protect the world, as misguided as he is. I don't think he would've stood idly by for the Black Rose plan. I'm not even sure if Varis himself would have so readily submitted to the ascians plans if he wasn't just left alone with no one but grandpa emet and elidibus piloting Zenos' corpse.

  • Not only this fight, but I've always tell my friend how Haurchefaunt death was so important for the game it marked a before and after. On ARR we see death, but our alies are usually fine, Thancred goes back to normal, on the bloody banquet the most brutal "death" is Nanamo's and Teledji's, however Teledji was no ally and with the brutality it hold not a single drop of blood. Later on we also find out Nanamo is alive. Moenbryda is also an ally who died, but it was so fast many barely got time to get a liking of her. That's when Haurchefaunt comes in, we have been knowing him for a while, he was an ally who somehow managed it for us to go into Ishgard, he fought by ourside a bunch of times and broke the game's logic where every NPC askes you for help and do suicide missions but you don't question the storyline because it's game, until you find out Haurchafant had to be restrained and stopped to go after you because even if it's a game, he has some more logic than the rest of NPC, he was way too aware and the game punished him by showing us the first actual brutal death in front of our eyes, with blood spilling and most importantly not having a "he actually survived" twist like with Nanamo, he stayed death as a mark for us to now awknowloadge that any of our allies could die, our favorite characters could be gone in one moments and that from Heavensward and forward the story would be more brutal, sad and with so much lost so we'd better get ready for it.

I will likely never do Ultimates due to difficulties remembering mechanics (I struggle with tunnel vision towards my crossbars just doing my rotation as it is), so something like this made my day. I play FFXIV for the story and man, this raid delivers even if I’ve never touched it. I won’t lie, the realization that Haurchefant could be saved here had me in tears regardless of what the consequences are in that particular timeline. I still miss him as does my WoL. Thank you for sharing this, for you gave me the chance to see a storyline play out that I don’t have the skill to see play out for myself. Regardless of how difficult this is, the story that plays out is both tragic yet marvelous to me.

If that day I feel like playing something , then i play it. harder extreme and savage 1 are still puggable if you really want to, but you can only go so far with only one or two fight . I kinda just abandonned the savage and even extreme field for now, endwalker just burned me out at p3s (with non-pug, at that). completed that one once and now i cannot listen to that dang song. Dungeons aren't my thing and normal trials are too easy. there's really no middle ground much for people who want harder content but don't want to schedule spots on their week for progging a raid fight. • There's no middle ground and that's the issue. Yes, dungeons have been turned into snoozefests for the sake of the most casual of casual players. EX and Savage are a little on the too hard for the middle ground side. Ultimates are for the elite. But where's the content for those of us who miss the OG fights and dungeons that were punishing but could be done after a few wipes? I've yet to have a full wipe in any normal content since the Ivalice raids, with the rare exception of someone doing it intentionally to troll.

This video sent me right back to the immediate 'oh god what does that even mean' when we noticed our LB stayed at 2 bars during P1, the joy of progging to a new phase and getting to hear the OST change from my own POV, rather than a stream, all the way through the sound of his solemn vow being broken for the god-knows-what'th time, basking in the moment during the P6 transition, and finally popping off with my group on our clear. I think it's really important to have someone out there who can truly capture what it was like to be there, in a way that an otherwise eloquent content creator couldn't just from watching bits of the race and getting the fight explained to them second-hand. You did good with this one :D As a personal thing, I'm just a dime-a-dozen week 1 healer, but you've always been one of the players I've looked up to as a progression healer since I started in late ShB, and I hope you're doing well

I also love how you incorporated the reactions of the streamers and internet, and significant clips throughout. Incredible editing! If you ever decide to make a similar video for TOP, or any other significant raid tiers or ultimates, I would absolutely be here for that.

I’m a newer player and when I saw snippets of the world race it inspired me to make that my first ultimate clear! I remained unspoiled past p3 and have since cleared it as my first ultimate! The joy, the tears, the relief from finally clearing was undiscribable. I hope in the future I have half as much fun as I did with DSR! So far uwu prog.. hasn’t been as fun!😅

I would LOVE to see similar retrospectives for other Ultimates, explaining them in the form of a story rather than just a purely analytical guide. Seeing the history behind them, the mechanics, the spectacle, the race around it, all of that good stuff!

So watching this video has been a lot of fun and a good trip down memory lane, 100% one of the most enjoyable and interactive world races I think and hopefully we'll see another just like it in Dawntrail. I was an anxious, stressed out mess, but they were super gentle with me and made it clear that we were there to have fun and prog means progress, not necessarily completion. Relax and have fun with it. Run the content with folks who arent there to take things too seriously, and you can have a ton of fun even with the anxiety.

    • when i first started in ARR (quit then and got back into it near the end of HW) i was a complete noob. then in SB i joined my first static (an FC 1) which also died in the 3rd fight due to lack of progress. i've seen UCOB and UWU release and saw the prog of it, even said "no way i'm ever touching that" in SHB for the 1st time i cleared a raid tier (SB had a lot of petty drama which disbanded statics) and i cleared both the 2nd and 3rd tier. then in EW i joined a static that i cleared the 1st 2 tiers with, progged to the final fight of the 3rd tier before leaving because lack of prog and constantly people leaving setting us back. but in that static we also started instantly on DSR's release with an ultimate (being DSR) we tried a lot but went back to savage for the 2nd tier and back to DSR after the 2nd tier (and back to savage for the 3rd tier, another reason i quit that static) me and a friend from that static ended up resorting to PF and clear DSR and it was an amazing experience. start small, plenty of casual statics (2 days a week 3 hours a session) for UwU, the easiest ultimate right now, the fight is for the 1st half on basically extreme level, only gets hard once you get to the 2nd part (which is ultima) once you got a taste for ultimates, you'll look completely different at savage.

  • I cried watching this since I started this day one and it took so long since our static used our own strats (which I am very happy with). Since we used our own stuff up until p6 and p7 - we had a lot of arguments, drama, and of course real life took a turn for some members requiring us to find new people to adopt to our strats, it took a good 3000+ runs for the original members to get the clear. But man that clear felt so good. We finally signed off DSR after clearing it 3x in a row in 1 session, ending it in a memorable night of 1 shotting from beginning to end and watching this video ALMOST made me want to go back in again since it was such a rich fight, but man I remember the pain and agony of .3% p7 enrages and I don’t wanna suffer in PF XD. So thank you so much for reminding me why I suffered and laughed for so long. Working on that 4th and 5th titles now xD

I'm very new to FFXIV, I just started on Leviathan this month. Sadly I'm only on the trial at this time, will be investing at the end of the month. I do intend on doing... attempting.. ALL content at some point so to get a glimpse of the challenge ahead is awesome. Final Fantasy always had epic bosses that were so enticing to fight in the past so to see them go even further in difficulty is quite impressive.

Just a mention on Phase 5, when you were wondering why people were considering blocking the Knight's Spear, it was most likely because in the Extreme version of Thordan's fight you had to do exactly that, so it was most likely something that veteran raiders that did the fight were considering a solution at the time.

  • This was such a great video. The explanations of the phases, coupled with the running commentary of the excitement both raiders and twitch viewers had at the time, made a video that encapsulated and recreated how incredibly exciting it was to watch this race unfold. I had just started FFXIV during Endwalker, so by the time this ultimate came around, I was just coming to terms with raids and mechanics of the higher end content of FFXIV. I didn't quite understand the fight, but the story had me hooked. I had never experienced anything like this from my old MMO, and it was one of the most thrilling things to be watching vicariously from the side lines on Twitch. I'm still not there with raiding, so your explanations were greatly appreciated, and this video just gave me nostalgia of how it felt at the time as a newish FFXIV player. I'm not sure if you plan to, but I hope you can do one of TOP.
