First attempt at Fly Press Forging - Punching my first hammer eye in some 2 inch EN19.
The Fly Press is a war time Norton No.8
I soon realised I should have used H13 Steel for the punch instead of EN19 / 4140.
The lube I made up was Bee's Wax and Graphite - I simply melted some Bee's Wax in a pan in a pan of boiling water (bain marie) and then tried to get as much graphite as I could into the bee's wax.
Nicely done.
Greetings from Australia. Great to see some fly press forging videos. They truly are amazing machines
Well done sir!
A number 8, holy moly.
If that would have been my first set of tongs, I'da been damn proud of myself. 👍🍻
Could you use an arbor press for blacksmithing?
I don't think you would get enough mechanical advantage with an Arbor press - They tend to be quite low tonnage. I have a No.2 fly press and that is useless for blacksmithing. You should really be looking for a No.6 fly press or bigger.
arbor presses have lots of uses in blacksmithing.. Not like a flypress but for a zillion smaller uses.
I've used my little #2 flypress to make tenons for many years..A blacksmith shop is a place for innovation. I worked under my first power hammer in 1967.@@theamateurblacksmith
@@theamateurblacksmithI disagree. I’ve got an Adams Bros #2 fly press. I use it a lot for touch marks, straightening, bending, punching and more. Now… I would love to get a larger one, but ya gotta use what you have. As far as punches, use an air quench steel for them…and keep a blowgun hooked up to your compressor next to it for big work like that. Mine have lasted me years.
