    • @Ettore No, he is at gunnery. He should long be past the point of this ineptitude. Yeah, there is always room for improvement. It is why we trained, after all. However, he would not even be in the loader's position, with most of the TCs I knew. His performance reflects on the entire crew, when at gunnery. (I also blame the TC, since he should've made sure his soldier was up to snuff, unless this loader was new to the unit, and came from a duty station where he didn't serve in his MOS.)

  • Former M1 tanker here, I did it all (Loader, Driver, Gunner, Commander) at one point or another. He was pretty rough off the mark, but improved considerably as he went along. Training, and practice, in a stationary tank in the motor pool, is fine; but learning how to reload quickly and efficiently and consistently in a moving tank can only happen at Gunnery. Look at his (much improved!) technique on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th rounds: cupping the AFCAP (base) with his left hand, and using the right hand to pivot the round across his left elbow and into the breech. THAT's how you do it. We call it training for a reason. Fair job, soldier. Showed marked improvement as he went along, still room for more improvement.

    @robertsutton1295@robertsutton12952 жыл бұрын
    • To do this, you need to spend the engine life of the tank and shells? To understand how to load the gun correctly? Funny. Are they standing, but at full speed over rough terrain, after several days of marching? What can wheezer do?

      @id_Usher@id_Usher2 жыл бұрын
    • @@id_Usher Doing basic drills in a stationary tank in the motor pool expends no fuel, no ammo; the tank is off, and the shell is a training dummy. Put the dummy round in the ammo rack. Leave the ammo door open. Open the gun breech. Take the round out of the ammo rack, and put it in the gun. Then take the round out, put it back in the ammo rack. Rinse, repeat. Builds strength, coordination, and speed.

  • Not bad at all. The problem was maybe the lack of practice (wich is normal at certain point, no one was born knowing everything). The way he grab the shell, or the lack of enough phisical strenght to change it from one hand to the other didn´t look the best. There isn´t a lot of space for the loader, wich makes all movements more difficult, and sure the 120mm shell weighs a lot... Seeing vids everything looks easy, and it´s easy to talk about it as well. I´m sure if I were there, I´ll drop the shell on the floor, load a SABOT when the TC wanted a HEAT, forget to put main gun on ready to fire switch, and who knows what more fails LOL...

    • It's a compromise, too many safety barriers would make it more difficult to load fast, and inside a tank there's very little room anyway so the more barriers the less easy people can move around, which is especially bad if the tank was hit and started burning, those same barriers intended for safety might actually end up killing you.

Last part of the drill was engaging the 'arming lever', making the missiles live, something you didn't do until all the team had moved away from the forward and rear blast area of the missiles (in case of misfire) and all of us were forever forgetting to either engage the arming lever or engaging with personnel stood in blast zones. Two days of training it all came together for majority of class except for a few who just couldn't master lightening fast loading/unloading/loading drills or the correct use of the arming lever. First time we carried out live drills all the training and prep worked in our favour, all missiles loaded, fired and unloaded correctly.

Shell goes in, it fires, and instead of a spent case ejecting, it's just the base and primer. What happens to the rest? I know there are caseless rounds for some experimental rifles but this is new to me. Any knowledge you can share?

  • This is a fine example of the challenges and effort of loading the main gun of a modern MBT. While I may be a proponent of the use of autoloaders in MBTs, with enough training and motivation a loader can perform some really amazing feats. And as far as I've seen so far, most countries that have tanks like these have no shortage of either. :)

  • Is the bulk of the shell casing part of the propellant, and only the primer/rear casing part coming back out of the breach?

    @consentofthegoverned5145@consentofthegoverned5145 Жыл бұрын
  • Okay, technical question here: Where are the spent shell casings? I see the metal disk things, (Don't know what they're called... "primer plates", maybe?), falling into a catcher bin beneath the breech after each firing sequence, but where's the rest of the shell? Do they use a cellulose casing that burns with the powder or something?

    @Nutzkie2001@Nutzkie20017 жыл бұрын
    • If I remember correctly, the shell casings are combustible.

    • On these rounds, the case (the light gray portion between the warhead and the black rubber sealing ring near the base in the picture above) is made of nitrocellulose (heavy duty cardboard impregnated with nitroglycerin) and burns up completely when the round is fired. The only thing left after the round is fired is the aft-cap and primer which are ejected out of the breach and fall to the turret floor to be gathered up and turned back in to the ammo supply point later for re-use in making new rounds.

  • Seems like he just needs to figure out a fluid method & stick with that method. Not too bad. No drops. Dumb question: Is the chamber essentially "crushing" the aluminum shell case down immediately after firing ?

    @doejon9424@doejon94242 жыл бұрын
    • No, the shell casing is actually made in highly flammable material so that it gets consumed when fired. This leaves only the metallic part at the end, which is why it is so small.
