The best part about the entire affair. France initially wanted to sell the australians nuclear subs but the australians wanted diesel subs specifically. So france reengineered their sibs down to diesel subs which are still capable of a later nuclear upgrade. Now, a decade later, australia is like: actually we want nuclear subs

well, you need to go into more details. What you say is true but biased. The project's cost went from 40 to 65 billion due to France's lateness. Also, US is transferring the tech to the Aussie. With france, they only get the submarines.
@@duyle-ej6ty Lateness caused by Australian demand on the project (that these diesel submarines could be retrofited back to nuclear one) and France not having knowledge on diesel submarines. Which was known before hand by aussie. Also aussie send a mail to the company and France the same day to confirm that the project could advance further and that was before they announced that they changed. Honnestly both Aussie and US way to handle this could have been far better. Especially when it involve messing with an allies. However i'm not saying France lateness on the contract wasn't a loss on their image.
@@duyle-ej6ty it is not really that .. the contract with france should be diesel because australian law prohibits nuclear proliferation ... and there was in addition to submarines a real partnership in the pacific .... the offer American allows Australia to override the law on the proliferation of weapons because the propulsion will be managed by the USA ... but the real problem in this case, in addition to destroying a contract on the sly ... is that 'an alliance created by leaving france isolated in the pacific ...
@@athrunzala6770 Thanks for reinstating what all the comments (including mine) said. What I pointed out was the gain the Aussie gets even if the Aussies orders the nuclear subs from france. And what's up "leaving france isolated in the pacific." They haven't been active in the pacific for decades. And in the current situation, it's EU's move, not France's move. France has given up with military and diplomatic power to the EU, at least in the pacific ocean. Of course, France still holds more power in African region.

It was an old deal that’s also why France is angry. The deal was signed in 2016, France trained Australians, hired about 650 engineers on the project, etc. So the anger is understandable

Can’t believe out of all the people Trevor doesn’t get it , it’s not all about the lost deal but US and France are NATO members and share their intelligence the least US could have done is to let France know it first hand And be included in the deal talk. french guy here. I don't think the real issue was the US, it's more UK and specially Boris Johson who is able to do things like that to France. I think the idea came from him and the US just needed to be granted by Australia to send their military assets to be closer to the chinese territory. Australia will cry soon because she is not even close to see the color of her US submarines, it will take years and will me more expensive.

I usually think that the daily show has informed and interesting positions on issues. That's why I'm particularily surprised that this particular issue isn't taken more seriously (or at all seriously). Ever since Obama has left office, the European-American relationship has suffered. At least in my country the entire movement of "America First" has become a reason to become less reliant on the US. Trump's positions on pretty much everything that concerned other countries was less than ideal, look at what he did with the WHO, NATO, UN and other organisations that were supposed to strengthen international coopertion. When his presidency came to an end, there was the consensus, that american politics change too quickly, and even if Biden were to be elected president ,we couldn't trust that he would take the global needs seriously, that he would honour treaties and agreements. The fact that the US has now involved themselves in an agreement they had no businnes involving themseves in, and actually forced France out of a multi-billion-dollar deal, is despicable. For me personally it shows that the US has no interest in strengthening its relationship with the EU. And it makes it very clear, that any deal involving the US is not really to be trusted. It shows that the faith the international community put on Biden's promises was wasted. Sure, it sounds funny, that France cancelled a Gala, but it is so much more than just a Gala. Obviously, this is only my opinion. I am by no means a professional. It's just what I think.
Why should America worry about Europe? Europeans need to actualize their views on Europe position in the world. It's time to realize we are irrelevant in the global scene. We are not the player and luckily we aren't the prize as well. Regarding this deal, the less financing French death industry gets the better. Australia is playing with fire...
As soon as I saw the title, I was expecting to see Trevor impersonating French and Australian accents. It turned out more accents than expected !
There is such a big lack of research or will to tell the whole story in the US media in this submarine deal. The french anger has much more reasons than the loss of money. I guess reducing it to this point makes the US look less shabby.

This contract took 2 years of négociations between 2014 and 2016. This was also a technology sharing between both countries. They started to work on it in 2017. Since that time, Australian people have been living and working in France with their families, and French people did the same in Australia. Both countries have been involved in this business for 4 years now. You also have to remember that France is a small country, smaller than Texas. This was a 56 million € deal. This is a geopolitical major crisis. Since the Brexit, many incidents have occurred between France and Great Britain. Now, after 4 years of work and partnership on the same project, France is said that everything is canceled because the US decided to reinforce its presence in this area of the world to stand against China without even discussing it with France. The whole European Union is supporting France in this crisis, and this may change the relationships between the US and the commonwealth on one side (don't forget the Brexit) and the European Union on the other side, which used to be allies. France has been humiliated publicly and the whole work and tech transfer are already done for 4 years now have been lost. This goes far beyond 12 submarines, it's a matter of trust, geopolitical strategy, and partnership between supposed allies.
Oh Get a Grip🤨! Australia realizes that things are about to get INTENSE in the Pacific and they need to start covering their a$@ against China and North Korea🤨😉. The US and the UK has better subs, technology, and intel. Simple as that 🤨😉!
Maybe the recent unearthing of corruption issues, and more, on the Scorpion submarine deal between the same French company and Malaysia going back to 2002 has caused a degree of suspicion. Not unknown for large contracts involving French companies to have such a whiff about them.Oh, and I think you meant 56 billion. Would think that anyone missing out on even a minimal commission on such a sum would be rather unhappy about the loss. Possibly adding to the angst in some quarters?

Why you need that much many of sub and the tech? if you do not have a plan to use it in the regional securities? Aussie breach their international agreement with franch, and now they will have nuclear military equipment. if ausie, uk and us wanted to act like they are the only countries in the region, man they may need to read why and how Chinese build OBOR project.

Australia didn't recall a promise to France, they annouced breacking an official governmental military contract while australian ingeeniers were still working in France the same morning and telling they're really happy of the subs building progress. Imagine Switzeland telling US to f**k off with their F-35 already half built on the US soil because now they choose french Raphales, not because they're better but because that's polically better for them. Oh and the contract breaking rules and due fees, you can put them deep in your [expicit diplomatic language]. Yeah, pretty accurate enougth
