    • Well playing a defensive style doesn't mean never being offensive, it means waiting for the greatest chance to attack such that you can win the point. There's a big difference between classic and modern defence.

    • He actually started winning because Mikka stopped playing backspin to his backhand. Emil got pretty good at chopping loops with his backhand but lost every single point (6 times) when Mikka pushed to his back hand

  • my best friend (and doubles partner in my team) also plays long pimples. Started doing this two years ago, when we came out of our youth team and broke into our adult team. The first like half a season was horrible for us, we lost almost every doubles match by him pushing seemingly easy balls into the net - and one time I was quite annoyed (my bad, apologised afterwards), I said to him "thats like the 10th easy return slice you missed". In the next training session he lent me his racket and told me to practice those "easy slices". I turned very quiet after that (got almost no ball over the net). Nevertheless, we're now one of the best doubles in the league and both join a higher ranked team in the summer, so practice indeed makes perfect😉

I'm far from the same level but I have been playing a more defensive style that before for the last two years, not using long pimples but short ones though, as it is easier to counterattack and block as well with it, but you can also do massive chops. It's really fun, hope you'll enjoy it as much.

Also the reason it doesn’t work well is because the object has such low mass that you just can’t give it enough energy and momentum to go far.

  • I did the same as you but am four years in now. In my experience there are three important things to learn, most important is as you said pushing. Step two is then to be able to vary between chopping against heavy topspin and no spin balls whilst maintaining a good distance to the table. The third step is then to keep the ball low(ish) and be able to place it intentionally. From the few clips in the video I'd recommend stick to steps one (the technique as you mentioned) and two (stand closer to the table, try not to let it drop as far as you do) for now, the third then comes almost by its self.

  • Super interesting, thanks guys. So I have tried doing a defensive play with normal pips-in rubbers that are actually meant for attacking and that already is a very interesting way of playing as it allows me to swap between defense and offence , though I mostly play offensively. But i think i would also like to try long pips at some point in time too, my coach uses long pips and has been training me in how to return balls played with long pips (i've always stuggled with it) but perhaps I should try playing with them. He mentioned that the thickness of the sponge in playing with long pips also makes a difference in playing, perhaps look into that as well as you progress through this year.
