This project is to commemorate reaching 5000 KZhead subscribers! In this series I will mill out the pattern on my Platform CNC and epoxy and sand the pattern for the plaque that will be cast in aluminum then hand sanded to a polished finish.
Part 1
Thank you for making a video without music 👏👏👏
What memories this bright back to me. I have not rammed up a mold in the foundry since I was in middle school metal shop in 1969. Lots of fun to see how things turn out. Great video!
I think back to my high school shop from time to time. Hard to believe this is not a part of everyone's education. Thankfully KZhead allows exposure for an education in making to those who are inclined. Thanks for your comment!
You wrote thanks for watching at the end. We should be thanking you and others like you who share their knowledge with others. Thankyou.
Watching you mold stuff made me feel relaxed haha.
Nice job. I like the way u made the frame with a detachable pin in one of the corners. very convenient
I know this video is now 2 years old...But Damn! That is the best home casting i have EVER seen. Result, setup and process. Top job fella.
Best looking furnace and the tongs setup is first rate
Absolutely beautiful, Brian. Awesome job with the petrobond and a careful, highly skilled hand.
I bought his foundry plans from his website, unfortunately I’m a truck driver and between places since I’m never home anyway so I haven’t been able to build it yet, do have 2 kegs though ready to go and ceramic fire cloth. But the plans are well detailed and I would recommend
Hey, thanks! 👍 Good luck with your build!
having seen the videos for 100k and 1 million subs plaques I have to say this is so much cooler than anything KZhead could ever honor someone with.
I suved after watching this video. Your probably the best caster I have seen and I respect you for it.
Very clever building the flask with the rebate register, and having one corner unlock-able, to allow it to be removed from around the block of casting sand.
Gracious and disciplined handling of work.... Love it!
That's absolutely AWESOME!!!!!
+Summers Woodworking Thanks!
Beautiful work! Subbing to contribute towards the 10k sign!
your work borders on perfection... works the heavy raw material and turns it into a work of art.... it was sensational... Congratulations
amazing to watch you do this a true craftsman at work. Keep it up
Your work on this is stunning, I love the finish quality of the casting and your post work with the painting!
+briancnc Thanks!

Finest quality in casting I've ever seen so far, great job
You sir have the talent. That was awesome. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for your comment!
Congrats on your 5K KZhead Subscribers, and here's to another 5K!!!
+John M. Evangelis Thanks and Welcome!
Thank you for your videos. They are very entertaining and I've learned a great deal from them. I look forward to when I will begin casting my own parts. :D
Great Job Brian, you are one talented guy. Thanks for sharing your artistic talent. PS, I love the Bud Furnace.
Beautiful sign.
Thanks!
You deserve more than 5K subscribers!
That is much nicer than any plaque KZhead might send You, bravo!
Fascinating, I didn't realise I could hold my breath for so long. I have to subscribe now as your the first to get my full attention in any clip. Thank you.
This is so much more badass than the 1 million subscriber button from KZhead

Reminds me of Metals Shop in 1971. My "buddy" dropped a shotgun primer into the sand mold the teacher had built as a demo for casting. Good thing the teacher was wearing a full hood, face shield, gloves and apron. When the aluminum poured into the mold, the primer went off and shot a spray of liquid aluminum right toward his face. That was the last year Metals Shop was available.
Yup. I didn’t get to do metal casting but we still had basic small engines, etc…
Beatiful project, show of video. I Like!
i could only imagine what you'd make if you ever reach 1million subs
He chips it out of marble
This is pretty sweet, I know its a bit late, but you should put a clear coat on it to protect the aluminum
о рогнографиа
Spoony my
Spoony Like you said he should've given a clear sealer coat , much like after painting on pottery they glaze it a to protect the paint etc so are spot on spoony because that's exactly what I do when spraying metals a coat of lacquer to finish it 👍
I found a rusty brown bike horn at a flea market and a brought it home I was just thinking I would clean it up and paint it. I cleaned it up on the wire wheel and the metal shined right back up. I put a thick coat of clear over it and to this day it's on my bike and it still shiny I put it on an old bike that has a lot of old blue accessories on it.
O
Best overall technique in sand casting, the box, method, pour, best extraction, extraction tools. Best all around...cool video...
I never wasted my time watching this video, thanks bro. That was awesome.
very beautifully made. am your subsriber now
+Mohammed Ismail Thanks! And welcome!
Perfect, you did a great job, it looks amazing. You got like and sub :)
Very well done awesome job, taking care and time ending up having great project I recommend you for business that need great quality job. Thank you for the video.
Beautiful Work! I used to work in a foundry, what a Filthy job! However, You made it look so simple & clean.... Nicely Done Sir'
A few days ago saw the same process by a Indian worker, no fancy equipment just his bare hands and brass from old vessels, and cast the most intricate idols, that's workmanship
Brian, great from start to finish. My only advice as an experienced bronze caster: casting with no further protection as leather gloves and helmet is really risky. Just a little gas explosion in the melt, a cracked crucible during transport from furnace to mould and u have a serious incident. Wear leather jacket, leather pants and strong shoes. It is just a short moment to wear these uncomfortable caster clothes, but u will really protect yourself. Keep up the good work. cheers Herri
+SURE D Thank you for your concern! I just cast some brass and I can tell you that is a whole other ballgame...
just have watched all your videos and was really concerned how u started to cast. U take care for all the details, which is really amazing to see. I have cast a lot bronze, bell bronze, zine copper alloys in my live as artist in Germany. I have learned casting in Italy and saw also during 20 years some serious accidents. Especially casting in the open and not in a shop. Many part time caster oversee the danger of gas explosions and heat radiation. ( think of rain drops that fall into your melt. Jesus.... or especially lost wax casting when the wax wasn't completely burned out. That's a bomb. Luckily u are right now only sand casting, so this problem doesn't occur. Better be double safe. Please!!! U are casting alone, then u need to be fully concentrated, always... I live now since a long time in China and do other stuff like CNC and prototyping / designing. Any help or advice, just drop me a note :-). All the best... Herri

SURE D Hey man, I know this is an old comment but I wanted you to know you're super awesome for caring so much about this guys safety.
Bronze is hotter and therefore safer to a small extent anyway. Bronze will tend to bounce off you ( after burning the crap out of you ) while Aluminum is far more dangerous. This is because it has a cooler pour temperature, strangely enough. It tends to stick to you when it hits giving you a far more catastrophic burn. After sticking it continues to transfer a huge amount of heat into you. I'm not saying bronze can't stick, but aluminum is far worse. Good job and take care my friend, from a fellow foundry guy.
You are a true artist to make something as beautiful as that‼
Friend your handwork is amazingly tidy, perfect, beautifull. go on, will be delighted to watch.
A lot of work, but what a beautiful job!
Thanks!

Excellently done and really beautiful end product ... well done !!
Wow! I just loved the process. Wonderful work of art. A reflection of how life is. We have to go through various, at times unpleasant situations that (chiseling, burning, cooling, adding, sometimes subtracting). These finally refine and mould us to attain perfection!

the best technique I've seen on youtube overall. I learned a lot. What would you do differently to eliminate those imperfections?
Longer runner and to be a bit more diligent about removing sand particles. Also could plan to remove more face on the piece until the voids are gone. I could have also braised them full and sanded flat.
No have the finish on the bottom of the mould and the back of the plate as the top then inclusions willl be on the back of the plate as they will float cleaner finish on the face this way
Right now. Most CNC that cost more than a car now can do straight to the aluminum carving and no need to cast it..But his technique is far way human touch, than a machine touch and the overall finish product will and shall always be good to look at knowing how many precious hours and process of making it, that when someone saw it and ask "how'd you do that, was it by traditional way?" and then answered "YES" I guess the asking person would not believe it. great work there!!! Envy here, been longing to have such things, tools, and everything to make one...unfortunately, I was born with nothing. Plain and simple human being. :(
@@rcrazee5077 "traditional" except for the computer carved form
Looks extremely good ....... Brilliant work with a steady hand!!

Nice job, I wish you had explained the beginning as well as you did the end.
absolutely amazing!
Thanks!
Really awesome casting. And congratulations that are long overdue.
Impressive ......came out very clean great job 👍
Hay Brian, where did you get your crucible lifter/tipper from?
From hell.
This is epic
Haha, thanks!
+Brian Oltrogge Wonderful work. I'm about to build your Grunblau machine I think. Been thinking about it for a while - got your plans from you :) Wondering if I can modify that machine (make it wider)
You can make it wider, it won't be as efficient from a sheet yield standpoint. You won't be able to do full 4x8 without a seam though. I found out that the reverse was true for me after looking at my spoil board. I opted for a slightly bigger than quarter sheet for the Platform. Anything smaller is useless, anything bigger is a waste of space for me.
What a beautiful piece. Congrats on 5 k subscribers!
Wow... superb casting work u made....

A few thoughts. The finish side of the mold cavity should face down when possible. The reason is any debris or dross will tend to float. If the finish side is down the debris will end up in the back of the plaque. It's not a big deal but, it helps keep the plaque face cleaner. Cut your sprue and riser holes before you pull the pattern. Use a sharpened welding rod to vent the sand in the cope before pulling the pattern. The deeper your flask is, increases the need for a slightly tapered rammer. All small things that will help. Other than that, good job.
dbaecht He had the face of the plaque at the bottom. The overflow riser was on the back of the plaque. The fill riser was on the side. Just as you suggested. See 9:00
I can watch this all day. nicely done.
It's one of the better videos you can see on the web! Great work.
Very good skill. How do you make that master mold? I would like to know please.
He never answered, but I’m sure it was CNC.

Really cool project. Nice thing to do for 5K... Then I look over and see there's now 182K. Nice work on the design and casting. The finish is really good too. I like it more than the KZhead gold button I've seen a few people get.
Congratulations Brian, I miss the music you used to have in the background of your videos, not sure what the tune was but it was catchy and used to cheer me up no end. Another nice job and project. Thank you for sharing.
Needs some gloss red on the "KZhead" :)
+Paul Murray I think you are right. Although the You tube graphic standard allows for a black and white version so I think I am okay! kzhead.infobrand/downloads.html

Very nice! I dont know much about this process so i was wondering what type of dirt / clay this is? And couls it be used for plastic aswell?
The clay is made by SiO2
Very nice. Kinda like baking your own birthday cake, eh? Great job.
Honestly I've never thought of using a beer keg as a furnace. That's a lovely design!
Start making 50k subs plate
+John Breitley Done and done :)
155k...
Turned out very nice but your can control when you spray painted was making me cringe. Start and stop the flow of paint off the project, that way you won't get the heavy blotches. I noticed some of them when you did the final close up. Personally, I would have done it in satin but that is just me.
Very nice piece congratulations!!
Very nice job. Enjoyed the video. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for future works.
+George Goff This was one of my first works! There are many more since! Thanks!
