Who was Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was a pivotal figure in Indian history, celebrated as the founder of the Maratha Empire in the 17th century. Born in 1630, Shivaji carved out an enclave from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire. Through his valiant efforts, he established a competent and progressive civil rule with the help of a disciplined military and well-structured administrative organizations.
Shivaji was known for his innovative military tactics, including guerrilla warfare, which allowed him to win battles against more sizeable and technically superior forces. He was not just a great warrior but also a visionary leader who promoted the use of Marathi and Sanskrit in court and administration, contrary to the Persian used by the Adilshahis and Mughals, thus laying the foundation for the Maratha identity.
His reign was marked by the fortification of his territories, building a powerful navy, and establishing a just and civil rule that promoted welfare. Shivaji's respect for all religions and his efforts to protect his land from invasion earned him the title of 'Chhatrapati' or 'King of Kings.'
Shivaji's legacy extends beyond his military victories and governance. He is a hero of folklore and perhaps the most revered leader in Maharashtra, India. His establishment of the Maratha Empire laid the groundwork for the resistance against the Mughal Empire and eventually the decline of Islamic rule and the beginning of Hindu resurgence in India.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's strategies, policies, and legacy continue to be studied and admired, making him a symbol of pride and inspiration for many in India and beyond.

I am a Gujarati, born and bought up in Mumbai.. when I was in 4th std. my mother would narrate the stories of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the most dramatic way and it always gave us goosebumps and proud of such a great leader of our country. Unfortunately, my colleagues from other part of the country doesnt know anything about this Mahapurush, all thanks to our education system. - Chhatrapati Shivaji Shahaji Bhosale (1630 - 1680) Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj could only live 50 years 45 days. He is alive in the form of his philosophy. Today every country in the world use his way of making strategies and fight with opponents irrespective of walks of life. His biggest strength was his strategies which outclassed all opponents even before actual battle. Means his every single action creates doubt and conundrum in the minds of opponents which in turn keep opponents on the verge of defeat even far before battle. The marathi song itself indicates that 'Shivrayanchya Buddhiyukticha Lagana Paar'. My conviction is that If Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj got another 20 more years then Britishers could not ruled on us even they can't come to our soil. Very true. Even in our school's history textbooks (NCERT) we were taught about mughals and not about Shivaji Maharaj. But our school gave us separate booklets and taught about Shivaji Maharaj.

I am a Tamilian, born and brought up in Mumbai. I studied in a State Board English medium school. From 3rd standard onwards only the subject of History and Civics was introduced. In my 4th standard, we had an entire history textbook on Shivaji Maharaj. Till date, I still have my old favorite history textbook. When I shifted roots to Tamilnadu, many people were not aware of Shivaji at all. I wish his story gets more recognition. Shivaji Jayanti is a big day celebration in Maharashtra. Jai Shivaji, Jai Maharashtra.

- @@krishnanr8253 I don't know what was taught in Tamil Nadu about Shivaji Maharaj. My classmates were not aware much about Shivaji or Maharashtra until I explained them. But, if I am not wrong there was an entire chapter in 5th or 6th standard about Chola dynasty while I studied at Mumbai. Especially Rajaraja Chola was highly praised because he was the first king who conquered through waters and had a strong navy force. There was even a part dedicated to Sangam literature. Not sure if other classmates from Maharashtra remember these details, but I do because History is my favorite.

- @@aparichita Different times, different kings. Get them in a sequence, look at their achievements and compare what was more demanding and which king held it stronger. I am sure you will understand, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is actually underrated if he wasn't there perhaps whole of Bharat could be a country of converts by now. Having said that I am not belittling the other kings, for sure they had challenges of their own and they stood strong in their times too but invasions of India was something more demanding Shivaraay held it much much stronger.
