SHEARING NEW ZEALAND ROMNEYS... IN SCOTLAND!! - What a setup this place has!!
Viewfield Romneys!!
In this one we are with Kate, Marcus and Maggie Maxwell at Viewfield Farm Romneys. What a pleasure this was to record with banter from the moment we arrived until the moment we left.
They shear their ewes twice a year and the lambs are shorn once.
I'd never been shown how to shear a Romney lamb until today! A great experience for me.

ABOUT ME
I’m 30 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland. That’s why I have such a strong accent!! I was born and raised in sheep with my dad being a shepherd on an Ayrshire farm.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep.
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died (cue the X-Factor style monologue) so I decided to get my own sheep so I could keep my hand in. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 ewes.
I can now shear over 10,000 sheep a season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep ultra sound scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on KZhead and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

Sweet video!
This is now my biggest KZhead moment to date!! 😂. Thanks for comment Graeme! I actually name dropped you in this one!! Take a lot of inspiration from the way you film and edit your videos! Different class!
Marshel Romneys is a legendary breed. Those were the sheep days when we saw their farms' truck and trailer unit delivering those easy-care rams down here in the South Island. For young guys that shearing demo was priceless. Take note.
Being a handspinner and knitter, I love Romney wool! It's medium soft, springy, has an excellent hand, and takes dye well.
Robbie really knows his job, would have loved to get some tips off him other week when I sheared some Romney lambs for a neighbor! That thing with the front leg where he twists it a bit to pull the wool round from underneath the leg is spot on, I've never thought of that or been shown it!!! Liking you videos keep them coming!
Cheers James. If u are Uk based he runs a shearing course every year end of May!
@@TheSheepGame yeah I am, northwest England, Lancashire, where abouts in Scotland does he hold his course?
@@jamestatham5401 around Lanark. Look him up on Facebook. Page is called Shearing School 👍
YESSSS!!!!!! WOOL INSULATION FOR EVERY NEW BUILD!!!!!!
🙌🏼
Thanks Cammy, that is one of the best shearing explanations I have seen.
Pure class Cammy, top banter. Nice family at viewfield
cheers! They are different class!!
Robbie's demo is like a black belt jiu jitsu seminar. Excellent little tweaking to normal shearing moves. Makes me wanna go shear my lambs again😅😅 and also how much I miss jiu jitsu training ☹
He's something else eh? An amazing teacher. Check out his facebook. He hasn't got much done this year but he will be working on it in future!
Fantastic set up , with an owner with a great personality , wouldn't have known there were different ways to shear sheep
It is a great set up, definitely helps the job along !
Got Moser rouseying for you?! Love it!!! 😍🤩😄😃
Great woodshed setup . You’ll absolutely love New Zealand
Yeah I'll get there some day!
@@TheSheepGame ever been to Aussie and shorn Merino's ? if not come to WA you'll love it too 😉
I freaking 💜 LOVE 💜 this channel. Another knockout video, Cammy. 👏👏🏆
I love watching shearing up close in real time.
What a fun video. I love seeing the art of shearing and what gorgeous sheep. Thank you. ❤️
Brilliant video Cammy great laugh your never too old to learn😂😂
Cheers Stuart!! I'm just a boy yet =D
Love watching this! Thank you for sharing your world with us! 🥰
Thanks Elizabeth, glad you enjoy the content 👍
Wow u don't mess around lots of sheep loosing their wool 😂 😆 thanks for sharing. My uncle used to sheer when I was a kid I enjoyed watching.
Thanks Tanya, can be quite mesmerising, especially those with such a smooth pattern.
Great fun. Love Romneys!
So does Kate!! They seem to be fantastic sheep!
Great video with a good bit of banter. The out take at the end was a good idea as it was hilarious.
I wonder how many people end the video before that bit. I've laughed at that a few times =D
Lovely wool to knit with. Years ago, I went all the way to the Romney Marsh to get an older ram to cross with my Lleyns hoping there would be a market in my area for the Kent halfbreed. A keen young man of the county set begged me to let him buy the progeny and the ram. He made me an offer I could not refuse and then he went gallivanting up to your neck of the woods to shoot grouse. In the meantime, his rams broke in with the neighbour’s nubile ewe lambs. Daddy, not being au fait with sheep, but smart with a gun, shot the rams for a quick solution. Cammy try to get a Nuffield scholarship and you could go to NZ expenses paid. I understand that we are getting a lot of Kiwi advice to help farming post Brexit.
Wow that's a wild story!! Very interesting though Wendy. I'm ok re scholarship i'll just go off my own back and have some fun vlogging! Yeah farming without subs is the Kiwi way and it's how we should be trying to farm here!
The sheep game is the best KZhead I have watch
Another great video, always a good laugh
banter is the priority here =D
Another cracking video, loved it.
Thanks Michelle!!
Fab video Cammy nice looking sheep 🐑 too
Cheers Jane! Really good farm down there!
Best yet Mr Wilson your enthusiasm is palpable good man
Cheers Steve!! Banter is the priority... =D

1 of your best videos yet 👌
Yeah thanks Brian I thought it was a good one. Really enjoyed making it.
Is this your best yet? Could be! Great craic and informative. Some shearer, Robbie Hislop👏
I think so!! Loved the banter! Farmer Kate was amazing!

Amazing what a great vid 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Cheers bro spread the word!
They're so fluffy!!!!
Hi from Canada. I really enjoyed watching this video. I didn't realize that sheep were sheared differently. I'll be watching your other videos to catch up to where you are now. I am finding them informative as well as entertaining.
That's great Trish. I take it you are a Sandi fan? Starting to get a few of her fans now my videos are getting more views! Hopefully be as successful as her one day!
@@TheSheepGame Yes I am a Sandi fan.
Another cracking vlog!👌
Cheers bro! All came together quite nicely!
Love the outtakes at the end🤣🤣🤣. Still - a Budweiser??! That stuff needs to get out back into the Clydesdale it came from....
Greetings from Canterbury New Zealand.
Hi Kiah!! What did u think of the Romney shearing?
Looks backbreaking to me. Sheep are plentiful here. I saw one yesterday hanging out on the side of the road waiting to go back to its paddock friends.Ive got ( two lol) dorpers ewes. And 2 lambs. And a Wiltshire ram who bashed in my car doors 2 nights ago. No shearing for me. Great video 🥰. My Scottish language is improving too.
Robbie does that first leg blow I was saying about, got another Facebook page to watch now
He da man!
Nice to see some different sheep all we have down here are big Suffolk's crosses and texels would be nice to cross a Romney to get a bit more size from them
Big slam fest with you then! Romneys cross well with a lot of breeds!
Bomb video. Will have to try out that little twist on the front leg when going over the first shoulder.
He's got all the tricks!
@@TheSheepGame ive watched so much of his stuff think ive been clipping so long need a course where instructor roars at me....not that way u so nd so
as a person gets older is it easier to pen drag nd clip
Best one yet 😂😂👍🏻👍🏻
Cheers CJ!!
Cool she's from my home town. But just for those who may want to know the H in Whanganui isn't pronounced like the Fa sound of places like Whangarei. It is a barely aspirated sound (Wa).
Good banter and a really informative video. Can't say I would fancy shearing those lambs and watching someone like Robbie go through all the steps confirms I wouldnt be any good at it either. Oh and loving the Cobra Kai chat Robbie definitely has a bit of the Mr Miyagi about him.....
Wax ON. Wax OFF. hahah loved the Miyagi reference I sent this to Robbie
loved it
Cheers for always watching and commenting Mick. Appreciate you guys supporting the channel!!
Bloody good shit seeing Romney’s in uk not just nz when you come to nz shear for mackantoish Taihape they have a website
I'll bear that in mind. Cheers for the comment bro!
South island where its at
Same set up as grandfathers in Australia. Shorn sheep underneath. They were the best slippery dips with the hardwood greased up from the lanolin.. kids don’t care about sheep poo.
Grate vid cammy some set up there those romnys looked a pain to shear
Just a lot of work in them but very enjoyable!
Another great video, always a great chuckle listening to the banter you have with everyone! So, how many Romney’s did you come away with? 😂 she had her sales pitch down!!!
Haha she is a master!! I didn't get any but I feel like I want to get into them just so i can visit their farm more often!! Great setup!
Love this video and that your shearing different breeds of sheep. Do you need different blades for different types of wool?
Vids getting better all the time mate, you're a natural. I reckon subs are about to really take off. Countryfile after you next😀
Cheers CS appreciate that! They are growing steadily so just need to keep working away.
I'm new. Popped up on KZhead algorithm. I love the videos. 🥰
Sheep shearing what fun. My back is killing me just watching. We had a pet sheep once that we tried to trim. Took about a week to finish. Had to keep him in the back field poor boy. He was so strange, looked like he had a couple of doses of chemotherapy poor boy. Gave him away before the next haircut was due... Had a small hobby farm years ago. Had a pet monkey that rode on a dog's back too but that's another story......
Back can be a little sore at the start of the season but doesn't take long to get fit to it.
Hello you about me section is a interesting read I can see you work hard from the videos and you have achieved a lot
Thanks Mark i appreciate that. Just enjoying the process and seeing where i can take it. Maybe get a farm one day😁
We love Hoof GP too
🥰 he’s amazing!
Nice
I have Romney Suffolk sheep. Going for a Romney ram for next lambing. Tried Wiltshire this year but I don't like him. 😆
Top video again cam, Kates some woman!
Different class!
Throughly enjoyable vid, you'll be on tv at this rate, DVD for xmas eh
Cheers John. Next stop the moon =D
Interesting video, still don't catch everything you say but with post knocking and shooting my hearing isn't what it used to be. The shearing video when you had your gopro on your head was really good for picking up tips, better than just watching someone else but all good stuff 👍
Stick with me John. Some people have said they didn't understand at first but that they get it now. Just need to watch enough videos and you will be speaking Scots in no time!
We need to do a crowd funding page to send Cammy to New Zealand so he can Really shear sheep lol, hopefully a few merino's too.
Cool clip (from a Kiwi)
Churr Russell!! Glad you boys over there are watching and thanks for the comment!
Grand video, your doing a fantastic job promoting the industry...keep going and we'll keep watching 👍👍👍
Thanks!! i'm just here for the banter and any positives that come from that is great!!
You' ll need to call and see mark coplestone at the wanga pub. Whangomomona,on the old forgotten highway they shear thousands of sheep themselves.
Sounds awesome Nigel i'll bear that in mind!!
Proper shearer now bro, good onya
Still just a boy!
Some job👌
This is my favourite Vlog so far!
when you come to nz you have to go to the golden shears
Definitely!
The sheep’s wool is so clean are they out side or in the fields lam in the USA
ive went and helped robbie there a year or two ago but i wasnt shearing i was helping catch the big rams thats where you will have the best of fun
Almost as hard as shearing!!
Mate great video. (speaking as a kiwi kid)
Churrr Timo!! Glad you liked it!
Kate's a ticket , great video as always, how much is that wool worth? Got ours away yesterday 5cent for bf and 10cent for cross 🤑😂
She's a bloody legend of a woman!! Not sure what she'll get this year as she goes through wool board and you have to wait till it's sold this year.
Great video what's combs do you find best for shearing lambs 👍
I'm no expert but I like any short bevel comb that's been well run in. I use quantums mostly so that's what I was using here.
@@TheSheepGame thanks i must try out them quantums
that lady is funny she needs her own channel
She's a bit of a legend eh? Need to get back there for some more vlogs!
That's a great setup for sure, cammy what's the story with the difference in shearing romney's. Down to the wool ?
It's the fact they are full wool so have wool in all the points compared to a bare mule. Lambs is a different technique to ewes because they are smaller. That means you can get away with less blows on the undermine as you can easily reach over on last side. You wouldn't do this on a romney ewe.
Not going to achieve a personal best on Romneys.
I used NZ Romney development group Rams, put one ram with 250, 2 tooth first lambert, weaned 150%, but by Christ I was scared he wouldn’t do the job, but the breeder told me if I put him with any less than 1 to 250, I was wasting money, he was right, He was braver than me, 1 to 500 ewes for the first cycle, with a blackface to follow up, and tailed 10 black face lambs, and over 150% lambs tailed
That's class bro i'll send that to Kate she'll find that interesting!
Did the owner tell you how she got the Marshall Romney’s over to Scotland, I can understand getting a few rams and ewes, but that’s a long way from 2000, did they breed up from boof headed British Romney’s, into the open faced Marshalls
I believe it was imported semen. That sound about right?
The Sheep Game or maybe live embryos, that would be a quick way, but breeding up with semen is a possibility, anyway they look just like the marshalls out in NZ,
Wool insulation, The best comment ever. Next build, all insulation will be wool!!!
Before you do the first blow down the belly, take the wool off the inside of the left front leg, saves buggering around with it on the first shoulder
Like Stuart did on his one? Good tip!
Are your hands soft snd smooth because of the lanolin in the sheep’s wool?
Not too bad Barb. The knuckles Are smooth from rubbing through the wool 😁
Even done shearing in Australia? See some proper good setups here. I love watching your video because the sheep aren't bleeding, I've seen some complete hacks over the years with blood on pretty much every sheep the touch. Keep it up.
Never been NZ or Aussie! On the to do list though and I would look to get a few vlogs over there once world returns to normal.
@@TheSheepGame We'd love to have ya. Enjoy the vlogs. Caught my 3 year old watching you yesterday too haha
Awesome! I keep the swear words out so the kids can watch them!! By the time I go i might have enough Aussie fans to sofa surf the whole way =D. Where you based?
The Sheep Game based in the suburbs of Adelaide but have property in sheep country, just no sheep yet, prepping the land we just bought so what you’re posting with jobs etc is very helpful haha. Adelaide is quite small so getting to sheep country is within an hour or two.
In your puff works as well
Just wondering what to yoy use to count the sheep while your cliping as we have problems as people we clip for dont know how many sheep they have!
www.highwayshearing.co.uk/product/tally-counter/
Just click that every time u go to pull out a sheep😁
Wait, are you telling me there's sheep setups beyond broken pallets and baler twine that is getting rarer and rarer cause of bale net?! WHO KNEW!
I buy it in the roll now just so i’ve got plenty 😂
@@TheSheepGame Haha, wise!
Are you drinking a Budweiser ------- the queen of beers
Not an easy job to learn!🌻
Surround yourself with people who are better than you and you will keep improving that's my motto.
Hay from California USA enjoy the videos see the country and Sheep Operations could you please share the manufacture of the portable Sheep Shearing and Ally that you showed in this video Regards from USA
Cammy didnt know you are a Leinster Rugby supporter...shirt
Just love all the colour's you can get in rugby shirts, I've collected a few!
If you go to NZ have a crack at Merinos. 😁😁😁😁
That's a certainty! Make a great vlog watching me do 15 a run.
Timo Hicks cruel and unusual punishment, that against the Geneva convention😂😂😂 Nah he’ll be good on the old red eye wethers, character building,
Timo Hicks had a mate went shearing in the Riverina NSW, opened the catching pen door, looked a wether straight in the eye, Full of burr and sand, he shore 6 for the day and pulled the pin
Mind you he didn’t have the biggest ticker in the world, but he could shear if he wanted,
I’m 67 now, I shore a ewe at a place called Lochaber you’ll recognise the name, when I was 20, ive never forgotten her, she had been under snow for 6 weeks, her water broke in the catching pen, so being the gentleman i an I thought I’d get her out to lamb in the paddock, I started her at 10 minutes to 12, I finished her at 20 to 1, I would just cut her throat now, but I was young and gullible
Knees and elbows all the way shearing those Romney lambs.
Is that Heiniger motor you use good?
Everything Heiniger is good bro =D
@@TheSheepGame the Heiniger handpeice I have is really good but lister make the better motors
Yer some boy 😂
@@TheSheepGame 😂👍
Seen your KZhead on the back of a truck keep at it
Awesome! Where u see me?
The Sheep Game in Kilmarnock near hillhead school last night
Awesome 😁
What's the rush?
It’s always a little tougher to shear those breeds with the head and leg wool. 🐏
Yeah full wool makes a fair difference compared to the open sheep i’m used to!
@@TheSheepGame yeah, I was amazed the difference in speed I was getting switching from Romney lambs to the next day texels, almost twice as fast!
You’re going to have to give us an end-of-year tally on how many sheared.
Not finished yet Judy and still expecting to go to Norway but sitting around 15k shorn now since May.
Great demo👍young shearers need more vids to improve their technique
Aye he's the man!
Camee please may you tell me how we can speak to you privitly wen you have time to I nose haw the pressers as a farmers
Enjoyed the video, the wool looks very different from that breed, more separated than in a whole fleece.
Thanks Mags. That's because that's a lamb so the wool falls away like that. Same with what we call second shear Romneys as they have shorter wool because they are shorn early summer then early autumn.
I’m planning going to nz in a few years to do sheep farming much bigger scale than it is over here in Scotland !
Aye it's a different game and if I was 12 years younger i'd probably try it myself!!
ive got 6000 merino ewes ya can come shear in southland nz if ya want haha
haha booked up this winter bro =D
Peelers
absolute peelers!

Absolutely we should be using more wool and other natural fiber, like hemp. It's crap this throw-away clothing from non-decomposable fibers polluting the environment. I've loved my woolen cardigans. Nothing like it.
Totally agree. Would be great if we could find a way to manufacture clothing in bigger quantities to bring price down.
@@TheSheepGame I went looking at wool sweaters today and was shocked that most of them are ugly and expensive and there is not that much choice. Someone needs to design up some wool stuff. I bought a cheap wool cardigan for about $20 over 20 years ago, (maybe closer to 30 yrs) but it was actually cute and I still have it. Lots of folks have front loaders these days and wool sweaters are easy to wash and air dry. The world is crazy messed up that there aren't more choices in natural fiber.
Finally found some woolens I like at places that cater to skiiers, hikers and outdoor sports, like Sierra and REI. Still expensive but nice and functional.
