SHEARING NEW ZEALAND ROMNEYS... IN SCOTLAND!! - What a setup this place has!!

Viewfield Romneys!!
In this one we are with Kate, Marcus and Maggie Maxwell at Viewfield Farm Romneys. What a pleasure this was to record with banter from the moment we arrived until the moment we left.
They shear their ewes twice a year and the lambs are shorn once.
I'd never been shown how to shear a Romney lamb until today! A great experience for me.

This was all organised by Robbie Hislop so check out his KZhead channel for future shearing videos.

ABOUT ME
I’m 30 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland. That’s why I have such a strong accent!! I was born and raised in sheep with my dad being a shepherd on an Ayrshire farm.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep.
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died (cue the X-Factor style monologue) so I decided to get my own sheep so I could keep my hand in. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 ewes.
I can now shear over 10,000 sheep a season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep ultra sound scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on KZhead and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

  • Marshel Romneys is a legendary breed. Those were the sheep days when we saw their farms' truck and trailer unit delivering those easy-care rams down here in the South Island. For young guys that shearing demo was priceless. Take note.

  • Being a handspinner and knitter, I love Romney wool! It's medium soft, springy, has an excellent hand, and takes dye well.

  • Robbie really knows his job, would have loved to get some tips off him other week when I sheared some Romney lambs for a neighbor! That thing with the front leg where he twists it a bit to pull the wool round from underneath the leg is spot on, I've never thought of that or been shown it!!! Liking you videos keep them coming!

  • Lovely wool to knit with. Years ago, I went all the way to the Romney Marsh to get an older ram to cross with my Lleyns hoping there would be a market in my area for the Kent halfbreed. A keen young man of the county set begged me to let him buy the progeny and the ram. He made me an offer I could not refuse and then he went gallivanting up to your neck of the woods to shoot grouse. In the meantime, his rams broke in with the neighbour’s nubile ewe lambs. Daddy, not being au fait with sheep, but smart with a gun, shot the rams for a quick solution. Cammy try to get a Nuffield scholarship and you could go to NZ expenses paid. I understand that we are getting a lot of Kiwi advice to help farming post Brexit.

    @paulfairbrass4424@paulfairbrass44243 жыл бұрын
    • It's the fact they are full wool so have wool in all the points compared to a bare mule. Lambs is a different technique to ewes because they are smaller. That means you can get away with less blows on the undermine as you can easily reach over on last side. You wouldn't do this on a romney ewe.

  • I used NZ Romney development group Rams, put one ram with 250, 2 tooth first lambert, weaned 150%, but by Christ I was scared he wouldn’t do the job, but the breeder told me if I put him with any less than 1 to 250, I was wasting money, he was right, He was braver than me, 1 to 500 ewes for the first cycle, with a blackface to follow up, and tailed 10 black face lambs, and over 150% lambs tailed

    • Thanks Mags. That's because that's a lamb so the wool falls away like that. Same with what we call second shear Romneys as they have shorter wool because they are shorn early summer then early autumn.

  • Absolutely we should be using more wool and other natural fiber, like hemp. It's crap this throw-away clothing from non-decomposable fibers polluting the environment. I've loved my woolen cardigans. Nothing like it.

    • @@TheSheepGame I went looking at wool sweaters today and was shocked that most of them are ugly and expensive and there is not that much choice. Someone needs to design up some wool stuff. I bought a cheap wool cardigan for about $20 over 20 years ago, (maybe closer to 30 yrs) but it was actually cute and I still have it. Lots of folks have front loaders these days and wool sweaters are easy to wash and air dry. The world is crazy messed up that there aren't more choices in natural fiber.
